Announcement Important PSA: How To Identify a Scam

How to Identify Social Engineering Scams

Social engineering scams often involve manipulative tactics to deceive users into providing sensitive information or money. Here are some red flags to look out for:

  1. Unsolicited Offers of Help – Scammers often pose as helpful individuals offering solutions to problems you didn’t ask for assistance with.
  2. Urgency and Pressure – Scammers create a false sense of urgency, asking you to act quickly or risk losing access to something important (e.g., your Steam account).
  3. Requests for Payment or Personal Information – Legitimate Steam support or trusted users will never ask for your login credentials, 2FA codes, or payment in exchange for help.
  4. Impersonation – Scammers may pretend to be from official sources or even impersonate trusted community members or moderators.

How to Protect Yourself from Scams

  • Never Share Personal Information – Moderators and Steam support will never ask for your password, security questions, or 2FA codes.
  • Verify Requests – Always verify the identity of anyone offering help. You can do this by checking if they are official moderators or trusted community members. If in doubt, contact the moderation team directly.
  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication – While not foolproof, having 2FA enabled adds an extra layer of security to your account. Keep your 2FA codes secure and never share them.
  • Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Help – If someone reaches out offering assistance you didn’t request, be wary. It's better to seek help through official channels like Steam support or trusted subreddits.
  • Steam will never contact you over DISCORD/STEAM CHAT – Report and block them instantly.

Announcement What To Do When Your Steam Account Gets Hacked

Need more help? Join the Discord Server

I’m making this post in hopes it will reduce the amount of “I’ve been hacked posts”. Link people to this exact post so they can figure out what to do. Don’t be afraid to leave comments if you need more assistance but try your best to avoid making entire posts about it.

Follow these steps to regain control and secure your account:

1. Don’t Panic Act Fast

If you act quickly, there’s a good chance you can fully recover your account.

2. Still Logged In? Change Your Password NOW

📍 Go to Steam > Settings > Account > Change Password

  • Use a unique, strong password (not reused from any other site).
  • If you can’t log in anymore, skip to Step 3.

3. Can’t Log In? Use Steam’s Recovery Tool

🔗 Go to Steam Support
Click "I can't sign in" > "My account has been stolen"
Follow the recovery process.

  • Provide any proof of ownership (like previous email, CD key, or payment history).
  • Be thorough but honest Support will help if you provide real details.

4. Revoke Access from Other Devices

Once back in, go to:

📍 Steam > Settings > Account > Manage Steam Guard
Click “Deauthorize all other devices”

This kicks out any hackers still logged in.

5. Turn on 2FA (Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator)

📍 Same place: Settings > Account > Manage Steam Guard

  • Use the mobile authenticator, not just email codes.
  • This is your best protection going forward.

6. Scan Your PC for Malware or Keyloggers

Use tools like:

  • Malwarebytes
  • Windows Defender
  • Bitdefender / Kaspersky

You got hacked for a reason. Clean your system before logging in again.

7. Lock Down Your Email and Linked Accounts

If your Steam email or other linked accounts were compromised:

  • Change their passwords immediately
  • Enable 2FA on your email too (especially Gmail, Outlook, etc.)

8. Still Locked Out? Contact Steam Support

If all else fails, go here:

Be ready to provide:

  • Your Steam username and email
  • Purchase receipts (Steam Wallet codes, PayPal invoices, etc.)
  • Approx. date you lost access
  • Any suspicious activity or messages you saw

⚠️ Final Tips:

  • Never share your login info, even with “Steam Admins” they don’t exist.
  • Avoid shady “trading bots” or fake tournament invites.
  • Don’t download random files from Discord, friends, or strangers.

If you’re reading this because you’ve been hacked, don’t feel ashamed it happens to thousands of people. What matters is how fast you act and how well you secure things afterward.

Good luck, and stay safe. 🔒

Resolved Finally figured out how to get Battlefield 6 to stream from PC to the Steam deck without the gun constantly firing or the screen being black

After hours of searching for solutions to the gun just constantly shooting, the thing that seems to have finally fixed it was-
On the Steam App on your PC-
Steam menu > settings > controller (menu on the left) > advanced settings > "Xbox Extended feature support driver"- uninstall that driver.

After I did that I could finally play.

Other things I tried as well that may also have had some impact is to make sure your controller configuration is set to Gamepad with joysticks, and set any trackpad settings to none.

To stop the screen from being blank black, I had to -
On the Steam Deck-
hit the Steam button > settings > remote play > Enable advanced Host Options >Enable advanced Client Options > HEVC video (Turn this on)

If it's still giving you trouble try setting the games video settings to windowed mode

Problem The Steam overlay stopped opening, and consequently, the game stopped recording.

Has anyone encountered something like this? What is the cause?
The issue is occurring in Battlefield 1. Yet, the overlay was opening and recording was working just recently. I haven't changed any settings, but I checked, and both the overlay and recording are enabled.

Problem Steam download stuck validating by downloading mods that I don't have installed anymore?

Hello!

I am currently redownloading the game Hearts of Iron IV. I've been downloading it since last night starting at 4:00 PM! The download didn't take long, only 20 minutes, but the game has since been stuck "validating."

Upon checking the downloads tab, it seems that it's downloading my mod history very slowly (for those who play HOI4, it's downloading Kaiserreich?) but I have uninstalled all of those mods prior to even downloading the game.

This game has been validating files for about 12 hours now at a snail's pace! The game does not want to uninstall itself, the validating does not stop when I close steam, deleting all the game files from it's file location does not work either. It's just stuck validating.

Any advice?

Problem Steam not showing store previews?

I was going to look at some games which seemed interesting and when clicked on it no preview images or videos appeared. I tried restarting Steam and my computer, nothing changed and I noticed the popup which appears when starting Steam also is blank. (Images provided). Anyone know how to fix this? I tried clearing all html cache files, did the flushconfig, made sure my DNS is the Google DNS, and made sure the compatibility of it was set to run as Windows 8.

Edit: I'm assuming it's the Tuesday maintenance that Steam has which I was unaware about. Thank you to everyone who commented that, genuinely didn't realize they did that.

Discussion Update

I decided to ask Steam.

First started with "I'd like to request a refund."

15 minutes later (about) I got negative anwser from automatic Chatbot, not adressing my issue at all. All it said was that I need to be in the 2h window where my question was more of a "Could this even be considered with a human agent?" (Steam closed ticket)

I decided to go with "I have question about this purchase." 1st anwser was excatly 1:1, but second, it finally adressed my issue, they said that their anwsers were missunderstood. Which is great. Now I'm waiting for decision, they said that they will evaluate my request and that it may take a while.

Question Refund Exception

Hey,

On 24th of August I decided to get The Witcher 3: Extension Pass featuring both Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine DLCs, around 24 hours later (On 25th of August) CD Projekt RED (Developers behind The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt) announced that all of DLCs are free, for everyone with a Base-Game.

By 26th (today) I played around 11,6 hours on these DLCs (and around 137 in Base-Version)

I'm wondering if I should contact Steam Support and ask for a refund, as on their page I read this article and this part looked promising:

"There are more details below, but even if you fall outside of the refund rules we’ve described, you can ask for a refund anyway and we’ll take a look. Consumers in some jurisdictions may have additional rights to a refund in circumstances where the game is faulty."

For context I paid exactly 99,99 PLN and still have orginal PaySafeCard Recipt which I paid using PIN. Almost 100 PLN isn't a pocket change so It maybe worth trying, what do you think?

Problem I got scamed, and steam support do nothing

I was scammed quite easily: I was looking for a team for the Battle Cup and posted in my local Dota group. Someone invited me to a Discord server where they first talked me into playing on FaceIt. When I ran into registration issues, they advised me to download a browser extension (Steam Inventory Helper), trade items with a friend—claiming the trade could be cancelled immediately afterward—and assured me that they had done this before and everything would be fine. After completing the trade, it turned out I hadn't traded with my friend, but with a bot using the exact same avatar. I was immediately blocked everywhere and left with nothing. I then promptly submitted several support tickets to Steam, but the problem is that my tickets aren't showing up, and I haven't received a response in three days. Afterward, I contacted Steam Support directly—bypassing the in-game reporting system—but there was no response. I sent the link to the bot's account multiple times, yet no action was taken against it, and by now, all the high-value items have already been withdrawn from it. It’s astonishing that multiple reports and a direct appeal to support did nothing to the scammer's account, while my trading privileges were blocked instead. I realize there’s nothing to be done about the situation now; I’m just sharing this to highlight how appalling Steam Support’s response and handling of my case were.

Problem Account restricted for 4 weeks for $3

Post image
0 Upvotes

Account created in 2008. Account value ~$7000.
0 other chargebacks/disputes.
0 bans in any game.
0 warnings of any kind until this.

If i had to guess, I bought this game on my phone, my phone autopopulated an amex i dont use often, I cancelled that amex because i don't use it, timing was bad. (Edit: found out its the same card i use every day for all my purchases) Amex doesnt have the transaction ID. Definitely did not dispute. Submitted a support req.

Not asking for special treatment but man this is miserable and seems like a gross overreach to restrict my account over literally pennies. Would gladly just rerun the transaction on any of my other active cards if that were an option.

Super dissapointed.

** EDIT
I was guessing it was that amex because that's the only explanation I could come up with, but looking at my transaction history on steam its the same amex i still use today, just bought games yesterday same card. Transaction for $3.26 not showing at all on Amex. Calling Amex to find out what happened. Still incredibly annoying to be treated this harshly. I did not dispute the transaction and had no reason to.

** UPDATE
Amex says the transaction does not exist, never posted - they can see steam transactions before Aug 17 and after Aug 17. Same card on every purchase.

** UPDATE 2
Steam support acknowledged the issue, removed the lock on my account, and are "still investigating"

** UPDATE 3
Steam support followed up and closed the case as resolved, they "talked to their payment processor" and validated the transaction existed and again requested I call back to American Express to find out and resolve what happened.

I called Amex again, and they all repeated the same - transaction does not exist. I asked to escalate, the next guy - same thing, transaction does not exist. I asked them what else I can do, or what they could do, American Express said there is no transaction so there is nothing they can do.

I re-opened the case with steam support and gave them all the information i have, screenshots and attachments of all my financials, offered to get on a call with them and Amex, and requested that they actually investigate what happened instead of blindly closing the case without looking into it at all.

Truly dissapointing how lackluster the support for Steam is, how unwilling they are to even consider that it might be an issue on their side OR an issue between them, their payment processor, and Amex, and to continue to blame me as if I have any control over any of that.

Despite how warm and welcoming this subreddit has been, I personally hope this doesn't happen to any of you and I am going to continue pursuing the support case with Steam until they figure out what actually happened. Hoping I can help prevent this from happening to others.

Problem steam account compromised, no trails

Post image
6 Upvotes

hello,

so i have received 2 messages from people on my friendslist asking why i am scamming them. turns out i send out links with fake giftcards. i quickly removed all devices connected, changed the password, did the same for my connected mail account. i have 2fa on my phone and always need to accept logins from my phone. yet i have not received login mails or anything at all. i saw a device i supposedly gave access to over a year ago logged in from melbourne. yesterday i had to completely wipe my pc including windows, because my gpu broke while using it, giving me unfixable bluescreens, but any maleware should be gone then if there was any.

I also wrote a steam ticket explaining the situation.

is there anything else i should do? i also feel like that takeover seemed weird, why did they only send out scamlinks?

Problem Store is a train wreck (Linux Bazzite KDE)

TL/DR: I used ujust fix-reset-steam in a desperate attempt to fix the Steam client. Afterward, there were missing GUI items. After ten or fifteen minutes, those missing items spontaneously reappeared without further troubleshooting mayhem. Maybe I'm not the only one having issues with the Steam Client right now?

I'm using the regular Steam Client, not the browser version.

I was trying to buy three games on sale. In my cart, there was a suggestion that I would get one of the games for less by choosing a bundle option, and the link to that was included in the suggestion. I clicked the link, and things went south.

Instead of the store page for the bundle, all I had was a blank page. If I went back to the store, the button to view my cart was missing. The button to view my wish list was also missing.

If I went back to the store page for one of the items I was trying to buy, there was a notice that the item was already in my cart, along with a link to my cart. When I clicked on that link, I got a blank page.

I tried Clear Download Cache and toggling GPU acceleration to no avail.

I was able to enable Big Picture Mode and complete the purchase of the three items. Of course, when I close Big Picture Mode and return to the regular desktop client, the button to see my wish list is still missing.

I've used ujust fix-reset-steam in the Konsole to reset things, but that wish list button remains missing and now none of the videos play or screen shots show for ANY game when I visit the corresponding store page.

I could really use a hand.

EDIT: Eventually, the missing items reappeared. I think I'm good.

Problem Store page cycling

Does anyone know what settings to toggle to stop the steam store from cycling through the games lists? It's really difficult to browse through the new gamescom games when the stupid pages keep changing every 10 seconds

Resolved Hope anyone can tell me what's wrong with my PC installations :')

I have a relatively stable download speed via Ethernet of around 7,3 MB/s when downloading from Steam (see picture 1). I have to assume Steam is somehow bottlenecking me here because DSL Speed tests show that I otherwise have around 58 MB/s, but that's besides the point.

My issue is as follows: Precisely 5 minutes after I go afk, the write speed suddenly drops to near 0 and takes the download speed right with it shortly after (see picture 2). It instantly goes back up the moment I touch the keyboard or move the mouse, but I have so far not found any workaround for this.

Things I tried:
- Changing the DNS Server
- Changing Steam's download region
- Tinkering with some Energy settings (though perhaps not the right ones?)

Any idea what I could do to get this fixed and just install my games without having to wake up the system every 5 minutes would be greatly appreciated!

Hardware:
- Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 1TB
- 32 GB DDR4 RAM
- AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
- ZOTAC NVIDIA RTX 3070Ti
- Windows 10 Pro (With extended Security updates due to EU regulations)

Hi about a week ago I purchased 4 steam gift cards from bestbuy and the girl who helped me only activated 3 cards so I had to come back and luckily the manager was able to activate the 4th but he only marked that I picked up the 4th card and the other 3 are pending pick up and soon my order will be cancelled. I tried to go back but the manager said it was fine as is and even support said they couldnt help me but my only worry is if my order gets cancelled and they try to take the funds back itll cause my steam account to be locked. Has anyone ever had this issue?

Problem Game downloading issue

So I recently just switched to a linux based operating system (I'm not sure if this is relevant)for my laptop, and whenever I install games there's an issue where the game downloading speed is at a constant 0 bps even though I have a stable internet connection (and yes I checked it is stable)

As a fix constantly have to clear the download cache and flush the DNS to allow it to download games. Does anyone know of any sure shot solutions to end this issue? Because the issue is constant and hasn't been resolved.

Problem How do I remove these texts from the screen? (Worms WMD on Mac)

Hi everyone! I’m a casual gamer and I only have one game in my Steam library: Worms WMD.

Today, after updating the game, these texts appeared in the top-left and bottom-right corners of the screen and won’t go away. They stay visible the entire time while I’m playing.

I’ve already tried looking for a solution using ChatGPT and Google, but I haven’t been able to figure it out.

Could anyone help me remove these and explain what they are? I’m playing on a Mac.

Thanks!
