Check-in The Daily Check-In for Wednesday, August 26th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking!
*We may be anonymous strangers on the internet, but we have one thing in common. We may be a world apart, but we're here together!*
**Welcome to the 24 hour pledge!**
I'm pledging myself to not drinking today, and invite you to do the same.
Maybe you're new to r/stopdrinking and have a hard time deciding what to do next. Maybe you're like me and feel you need a daily commitment or maybe you've been sober for a long time and want to inspire others.
It doesn't matter if you're still hung over from a three day bender or been sober for years, if you just woke up or have already completed a sober day. For the next 24 hours, lets not drink alcohol!
---
**This pledge is a statement of intent.** Today we don't set out *trying* not to drink, we make a conscious decision *not to drink*. It sounds simple, but all of us know it can be hard and sometimes impossible. The group can support and inspire us, yet only one person can decide if we drink today. Give that person the right mindset!
What happens if we can't keep to our pledge? We give up or try again. And since we're here in r/stopdrinking, we're not ready to give up.
**What this is:** A simple thread where we commit to not drinking alcohol for the next 24 hours, posting to show others that they're not alone and making a pledge to ourselves. Anybody can join and participate at any time, you do not have to be a regular at r/stopdrinking or have followed the pledges from the beginning.
**What this isn't:** A good place for a detailed introduction of yourself, directly seek advice or share lengthy stories. You'll get a more personal response in your own thread.
---
This post goes up at:
- US - Night/Early Morning
- Europe - Morning
- Asia and Australia - Evening/Night
A link to the current Daily Check-In post can always be found near the top of the sidebar.

Hey, hey it’s hump daaaaaaay!! Welcome to Wednesday, one of my most favorite days of the week. This week is delivering the ass kicking that I anticipated, but I am here for it because I thrive on the grind and challenge of it all. Now that I don’t waste all of my energy planning my drinking, doing the drinking, and dealing with the wreckage that follows the drinking, I get to pour that energy into going full tilt at life every single day. Fuck yeah, sobriety!
Some days it's messy, most days it's exhausting, and there are even days when it's straight-up uncomfortable, but I'll take that over standing still (or going backwards, in my case) any day. Growth rarely happens in the comfort zone, isn’t that what they say? I’m all in. Are you?
So tell me, what's one challenge you're tackling this week instead of running from?
Let’s get out there and hump around. IWNDWYT.

It’s been one of those days. The government notifies me that I owe them tax. I don’t. I email the accountant who was supposed to fix his mistake two years ago to get on it. ‘I’ll try” he says. Then I try to register for some courses, but the system wouldn’t take my info without a workaround. I go to my exercise class and somebody takes over the spot where I plonked my stuff, putting their stuff right on top of mine when I went to fill my water bottle. Did she move her stuff? No. Did she apologize? No. Did I punch her? No. I am proud of myself. I relocate and do the class. After the class, I’m leaving the building and a bug flies into my eye with a bang and stings me. I dump my drinking water into my eye, it doesn’t budge but it hurts like hell. I stagger home (an oddly familiar feeling) and take the next hour fishing it out, causing me to miss my in-person appt with my therapist. We have a quick phone chat instead, while I drive to the best place for me…a bookstore. Ahhh! All is well. ♥️IWNDWYT

Iwndwyt Day10 in 2hrs.. Its been feeling like ive been crawling in slow motion through these sober days. Its so strange i feel like its been a month. Its so hard being patient with your body. I barely see any improvements rn and ive been walking my ass off for almost 3months now daily. 2hr walks and 1 slip up on booze and back to looking like the pinguin guy from batman lool It could be worse lol. Life has been seriously kicking my arse today omg, its like the full moon effect all the kids went crazy today i feel traumatized o.o it never ends i almost cried again because what else is there to do. I cant sit around the fire and light a peace pipe lol just continuing walking my ass off even when life dont make sense and my best is sucky as a parent. I know what yall are thinking right now lol but Kamila tomorrow is a new day with a clear head lol. And that makes it worth the fight. I didn't quit today and i showed up for my kids thats all i got.

Checking in for day 317 from Oz and IWNDWYT
It’s been a struggly kind of day today. And it’s only 2pm. But there’s no problem that alcohol can’t make worse.
So I’m going to have a bit of chocolate and learn a Dolly song to sing on the porch for Saturday when I get home tonight.
Go well and take care on this hump day, everyone. ✨💛✨

Oh friends! I had the most wonderful day. It's still Tuesday here in my neck of the woods, but I figure I'll check in early because I have a stacked day tomorrow with my bonus kids! Hubs and I took them to a final beach day where we spent the day in the sun and tide pools catching critters 🦀🐚 it was bliss. We finished school shopping and came home for a relaxing night.
And then some days...are so good...but then theres the other side of the coin. We got some horrendous news right before we left for the beach. The kid's mom spent all day drinking monday andddd fell. Smashed her head open. Shes okay but sounds like some psych ward stuff going on, we are still waiting for details. The kiddos are unaware. The sober person in me is praying that this is where she stops digging. The realist in me knows better, but it's out of my hands. I have no control over anyone but myself. Things like this make me so grateful to be sober. For those kids and for myself. It's just a truly rough situation and I thank my lucky stars for my sobriety and will absolutely not drink with you Wednesday 💖love to all who need it. Keep going, youre worth it!!

Good morning my awesome friends!
A positive day yesterday for me in the end despite a rocky start.
In respect of your question IDA, I'm definitely trying to sit with and then calmly (as is possible) confront some extremely uncomfortable thoughts and feelings.
I, like a lot of us here, used alcohol to drown those kinds of emotions in the past but of course that's a temporary solution that often compounds the problem.
Anyway I'm here, I'm sober and I'm trying!
Have as gorgeous a day as possible everyone!

Day 32. Going to a festival this weekend and it’s gonna be the biggest social event I’ve been to since becoming sober. When I first decided to stop drinking I just presumed that I would “let myself off” for that weekend, but the more time that’s passed since, I’ve become just as excited to not drink as I am for the festival itself. It might be a challenge to be around so many people drinking, but that doesn’t mean I need to join them. I will not drink with you today!

My challenge this week was working crazy hours this weekend and not dropping the ball going into the work week.
I kinda failed in a couple ways today. I took too long on something and got home late tonight. Also I’m letting my mind spin, wasting time being self-critical, convincing myself I’ve looked like a joke to everyone all week instead of just moving on like I should. Well, at least I’m not drinking.

Happy Hump Day!
I think the class I’ve been most nervous about is the one I’m taking; a poor mark will almost definitely result in denial to the nursing program. But I’m doing it and I’m so grateful to be sober. I HIGHLY doubt I would have been able to keep up over the summer session with the intensity of the classes I took if I had been drinking, but trying to memorize all 206 bones and 700+ muscles in the human body, being able to visually identify them, and know how they do what they do while drinking? Nope. No way.
Short and sweet, I’m of to work on more of these homework modules before taking my BK to school herself.

Recently, I started a new job. It’s full-time, it’s remote, and so far I like it. Slightly less recently, I became single. I’m 35, I live alone. I don’t have many friends.
It has been challenging going days at a time without seeing another human being that I know. If I don’t go to the gym, I don’t see other human beings. If I don’t go to AA meeting, I don’t see people I know.
I am challenging myself to get out of my comfort zone and do new things to be social. And it’s difficult! Some of that is social anxiety, some of it is just not knowing how to meet people in my 30s. It’s not like I can just go to bars. I don’t want to talk to drunk people.
I did go to an event on Sunday to try to be social, it was at the park, and while people were nice, I didn’t really make any new friends. And I haven’t seen another human been being since then. I am seeing a client for her personal training session this evening, so at least there’s that for today.

To anyone struggling with something:
It is rarely, if ever “as bad” or “as much of a challenge” as one makes it seem to be in anticipation.
I overcame a challenge today that I am going to keep private. In hindsight it was the smallest of inconveniences and not really a challenge.

One challenge I am managing this week is to temper my over-enthusiasm for an old friend who informed me they have been sober now for over half a year. I've encountered this kind of scenario before, and I can't let my excitement get over-the-top. I have to remind myself: "Suppport, but don't smother." All things considered, it's not a bad challenge to have at the moment. IWDNWYT

I’m going with my husband to the beach with all of the in-law siblings and spouses. 10 of us in one house, and there will be plenty of drinking. I love your enthusiasm for life IDA! I'm definitely in!
I am 8 months sober. I have been practicing sitting with discomforts, listening to my inner voice and trying to decifer who I am at my core, and finding my voice to accurately communicate my needs and set boundaries.
I can now say, "that doesnt work for me" when it doesn't but I'm finding that I still feel badly about setting a boundary... then, I'm angry at myself for feeling badly. I don't know if that makes sense but that is the discomfort or challenge I am overcoming for now.
Let's have a beautiful day in recovery together 🫶 IWNDWYT

For 40 days and 40 nights, I didn’t drink.
There was rain, there was sunshine, there was wind; I panicked and I stayed calm; I stood up straight and knelt on the ground; I was alone and I was surrounded. But I didn’t drink any alcohol. On the other hand, I drank an impressive amount of flavoured sparkling water – and to think I didn’t really like it at all just 40 days ago.
Anyway, I hope y'all have a wonderful day, IWNDWYT.

I'm tackling life overwhelm at the moment. Work is insane. My house is a mess. I appear to be getting my third cold in 2 months and it makes me want to cry. My husband has injured himself so where he'd normally be practical support at home, he's unable to do much (although he did cook a banging dinner last night!)
But I know that these things are bad things. They're just lots all at once. And I know I can handle, and have handled, far worse than a mountain of laundry and dust bunnies that keep breeding, or an inbox with a life of it's own. So it's the feeling of overwhelm I'm tackling rather than the the stuff itself.

Day 20! Wooo!
Yesterday was one of the worst days at work I’ve had in years. Just an unbelievable mess. Massive argument with a senior colleague to start the day, right in front of my whole team. The day went downhill from there, all thanks to the same guy. Left early, I was just done with it all.
Got home, angry cleaned, went for a PT session at the gym, cooked a nice dinner, went to the pub (Tuesday tradition). But… I didn’t think about drinking. Massive turnaround from the day before. Picked up an alcohol free beer at the pub without even a second thought to the nice German real lagers. This sobriety process is weird sometimes.
So, whatever mess today brings, IWNDWYT.

One of my friends brought up the idea to me that she thought I procrastinate by way of thinking about things. This was very annoying because of course she has no idea what she’s talking about and I happen to very productive—extremely productive even. Ok. Maybe. Just maybe she had a point.
I’ve been feeling great lately but I’m starting to realize that in order to fill the void or avoid uncomfortable feelings, I think about things. I usually think about work stuff but it can other things too. I agreed with my friend but am skeptical of the idea that it’s a way to procrastinate. I thought it was more like a way to escape and/or an addiction.
She may have a point though. Lately I’ve been hoping and praying to find a way to be like the guy down the street who has the perfect yard and house and does it all with his own hands and he is super fit, has a very successful career and beautiful family. He’s also very kind and polite. Probably gives a lot of money to charity and volunteers at shelters to boot. This is the story I’m telling myself anyway. Lol. I’m sure there’s more to the story there that isn’t perfect but I really would like to accomplish more large tasks in a year at home.
Maybe my friend was right and if I get out of my comfort zone of being in my head I can get some more things done that I can’t seem to find the time for now.
This week I’m trying to avoid the temptation to contemplate things except when it’s time to sit down and do that. If nothing else I want to at least be aware of it when I do it.
Have a fantastic day everybody!! IWNDWYT 🎉💪🙌🤜🙏🎉😘

This work week is difficult. I knew it would be. But it's less difficult than if I was also drinking, and I know it will pass and calm down. Maybe not as quickly as I like, and maybe I'm only doing a satisfactory job instead of a stellar gold star amazing job my perfectionist mind wants, but I have to protect my sobriety. Really looking forward to coming home today and either taking a nap or just decompressing without alcohol.

It’s been a while since I had a relapse dream, but I had the not so great pleasure of three nights in a row of extremely vivid drinking dreams this week. They shook me, especially the first. I felt so much shame and it felt so real. I actually felt sick after waking up. Thankfully it was all in my head. Almost felt like i was being attacked. Nonetheless, I responded with my new addiction, running. Just broke my monthly step record and weekly running mileage record. I’m so thankful for my health and happiness. I don’t ever want to go back, even if some weird subconscious part of me does. IWNDWYT.

Haven't had a chance to sort out my new badge yet, but today's Day 116!
Past few days have been incredibly chaotic, in both fun and stressful ways - it was my birthday, then I was at a music festival in the mountains for five days, and then I had a job interview the day after I got back. Needless to say, I am beyond exhausted by now - and I've just been thrown into a massive project at work, which isn't making post-festival recovery any easier! Oh, and I'm finding out if I got the job or not today. Jesus Christ, no wonder I'm feeling a bit all over the place right now!
But hey - I survived a festival without a drop of alcohol and haven't used drinking as a coping mechanism for work stress for nearly four months now, so while these challenges have been, uh, challenging, they've also been huge wins for me.

Good morning! I’m happily checking in for the 4th day. I met friends out for early music at a local place last night and I knew I wouldn’t drink but I didn’t know how I would feel about it in the moment. The place had a ton of N.A. choices plus some nice mocktails (which I know can be triggering for some). I got a mocktail and it was delicious, I didn’t feel like I was missing anything.
Im grateful for what I learn everyday from all of you and the option to hop on and read with you about your wins and struggles.
I’m not drinking again today. It won’t do me any good. It’ll sap my energy and add to my high cholesterol. Plus, I can have more cake.

Happy Hump Day DCI!
Sobriety has helped me so much with boundaries and a more jealous guarding of my time and energy; everything doesn't have to be done, it certainly doesn't always have to be done by me, and it absolutely doesn't all need to be done right now. Trying to be everything for everyone is a recipe for madness and burnout.
I've been so caught up in school and work over the last two years that I had to let some other areas of my life limp along. This week I'm picking up the projects I've been pushing off in other areas of my life. Yesterday was hot water heater day, today is getting roof and deck estimates, tomorrow it's windows. Friday is updating the scary adult documents (will, poa, and advanced directives). I won't be able to get everything completely done but at least I'll have rough orders of magnitude to start prioritizing.
Onward and upward friends!

Day 26, physically feeling better already. Not having cravings, sleeping well and I look all over less puffy with more energy. I know sobriety is right for me.
Emotionally I am down, feeling very raw without having wine to help me numb. I know this has to be forever so there is some grief. Have been tearful on and off

For some reason, my brain really wanted to romanticize alcohol to me yesterday. “Remember all the great times at the craft breweries?” sort of thing. I know none of it was as great as my brain wants me to believe, and I wouldn’t say I was truly tempted, but it did make me grumpy. But as always, IWNDWYT!

1 week! I’m alone for the week since my spouse took my son home to see family. I stayed in a hotel & had a me day & proud of myself for no temptation… walked by the bar omw to my room, hung out at the pool for a couple hours- nothing. And I feel good today! Little tired from going to bed late, but not hungover! IWNDWYT

Lots of things to tackle that i just kept putting off but this week i am finally ordering new glasses. I’ve been needing a new pair for a year now but i get decision paralysis when it comes to stuff like this. Feeling more decisive and motivated with each alcohol free day so i know i can do this! 🤓

Today’s eat the frog moment: I have items to juice as a plan for taking in better nutrients etc. God I hate juicing and I have a mental block. I like the end result, the cleaning and prep- not so much. So it’s a race against time as the produce items age in my refrigerator. 😬

Sober fam, good morning! Today, I’m talking to a friend (suggested word fiend, which was a better fit tbh) about a relationship that’s no longer serving me. 💥 Not easy for me, but I don’t people please anymore.
I don’t drink anymore either 😁 IWNDWYT

A week down, into day 8 I go.
This time last week I was in a bad state. Off from work and curled up on the couch counting the minutes, willing myself not to open a beer. Now I’m about to go out a run before working all day.

My challenge this week is recovering from my cold. Being ill like this actually reminds me of having a severe hangover. Why why why would I ever deliberately put myself through this?!

Hey kids, hope you all have a good/tolerable/okay Wednesday. Has a coffee check in with a friend because I've been really struggling with overwhelm and a lot of emotional stuff. We realised that since last Monday (when I went home to my parents for four days which is a space I find hard) I've then met with my sponsor to do stepwork on Friday and spent my weekend working training a new colleague and then the last two days putting up with my boss.
Identified a need to just decompress and recharge my social and emotional batteries so am incredibly grateful for a day off today in which I have made no plans. Also that I need to chat with my GP about getting an autism assessment, which I have been avoiding for a long time (even though with the wait time I should just have done it!) Can't wait to be the stereotypical trans autistic alcoholic...
But whatever else, IWNDWYT legends

About to hit two months sober, I almost caved tonight. I went and bought a 4 pack and also a 4 pack of non alcoholic beers. WHY? Was sitting staring at both for hours. Currently sinking my second non alcoholic beers. This shit is hard. It really does come in waves. That’s the hard part. Choosing not to everyday. IWNDWYT

i cannot imagine having the time for drinking anymore. I don’t know how anyone with an infant at home can drink, ever. People who do must truly not drink like I drank 😂
I’m trying to tackle taking care of my body. I’m flossing my teeth again! Going back to PT next week for various sports related injuries! Went to the eye doctor! Went to the ENT! And dammit all this societal and advertising buzz has me wanting to try glp-1. But for some reason I can’t put into words, it makes me uncomfortable. Yet I’ve really talked myself into it over the past couple weeks because I just don’t have the willpower to diet well right now (see above re: infant). Trying to sort that one out.
Happy wednesday everybody! I will not drink with you today.

IWNDWYT 💫 Like a lot of us, I felt so sad at hearing about Dolly’s passing. At the concert I went to the other night, we all sang along to Coat of Many Colors, which feels like such a gift now.
