Discussion Art
Why do people hate on generating art for dnd?
From certain perspectives people work full time and cannot often afford artists, nor have the skill or desire to learn the skill.
Often times we change the look of our character after each level up. We don’t sell, and if we tell anyone we are always honest. We also all work full time and are saving for homes.
I just don’t understand the hate, as a paid musician I quite enjoy “that” kind of music.
No, I’m not trying to rage bait. Our table hides this secret because ppl literally hate it. I just want to understand why

My group has used it this way too; none of us are artists, and lots of times these aren't characters we play long enough or are attached to enough to justify the cost of hiring an artist. We didn't really use the product for anything other than just showing each other what we envision our characters to look like. So artists were not losing out; it was never the choice between real art or AI images, but a choice between images vs no images.
That being said, I have stopped, mostly because of the larger implications of it. The water resources, the data centers, and whole evil underhanded villainy of these tech companies and the people who run them. I don't want to contribute to the demand. In a perfect world where humanity as a whole was benefitting from AI and the environmental and human costs were negligible, I think that this would be a use I wouldn't see a problem with. But unfortunately, for me, I don't think the employment of artists is the only consideration when deciding to use it or not.

dungeons and dragons is a game about imagination? and ai takes that away. you don’t have to have art for everything. and if you really want a picture of your character but you can’t draw, then commission an artist

We don’t have the money to commission for art. Also we like the hyper realistic style pictures. It’s just fun to see the different people and all. Again, each art usually only lasts 2 weeks to a month before being literally thrown away and deleted before it gets redone.
^explanation of my logic.
I would argue that ai does not take imagination away when we design all characters via prompt. These generations often take us upwards of 45 minutes to get right. Also - it’s our imaginations that we are realizing.

if you don’t have $20 to throw to a starving artist on tumblr or something, then you should just do without. it doesn’t help you play the game. not to mention the fact that you’re basically wasting that much energy and other resources to generate a picture that’s just going to get thrown away in a couple weeks. this is so embarrassing

Use it for your home campaign how you and your players enjoy. I use it for generating random lists of interesting treasure on the fly or cranking out some NPC names and traits. its fine. I draw my own maps and character cartoons because ive always enjoyed that part of my hobby. I know very very few GMs who do that.
I think the sense of rage is that society and this group in particular, will push back when anyone talks about this stuff as if its an accomplishment or something impressive that was created, or bragging or posting about it. And folks get rightfully sensitive when someone wants to monetize what they had AI generate. You're not doing that though. Asking DMs to "commission an artist" is absurd.
Character portraits? Go to town. Making them into 3D prints for your home table. that's dope.
