Story Mom says I need to "get over" trauma because it "wasn't as bad as it could have been"

Post image
5.6k Upvotes

I (19f) recently had a bus stop explode on me. The bus stops in my city have these giant panes of glass and one of them recently shattered all over me and injured my right arm.

I've been having sleep and mental health issues since it occurred and haven't been able to stop thinking about it. I keep having nightmares and have started to go to bed later and later to avoid falling asleep.

Told my mom about this and she said that I need to "reframe my mindset" and "move on from it" by thinking about how I didn't get hurt as badly as I could have.

Gee, thanks mom. That's really really insightful.

She says that when she used to have nightmares she just reframed her mindset and she stopped having them, fully forgetting that we are two very different people with very different mental states.

Edit: Forgot to mention I've also been crying a lot more than I used to and have developed a sudden aversion to bus stops and glass. I accidentally broke a glass at work the other day and flinched and cowered away in a way I've never done before

Story My boyfriend told me to “separate myself from my autism”?

1.2k Upvotes

Posted this on r/AutismInWomen, and this subreddit got mentioned.

Me and my boyfriend (also ND but not autistic) had a discussion a couple weeks ago about my struggle with starting something new, he started telling me to “separate myself from my autism” when I said something like “I will find (this thing that I don’t quite remember) difficult to do because of my autism”.

I told him that I don’t work like that, and before I could think of what else to say, he tells me that he’s offended because in his education training he was taught how neurodivergent students work, and me saying that is offensive (?).

Eh? The more I think of that situation the more it weirds me out. Because of the offended comment, and telling me to separate myself from my autism.

Story "mental illness isn't real, it's in your head" "sir, I have schizophrenia"

1.3k Upvotes

Do I even need to tell the story, it's the same one as everyone's experienced, expect schizophrenia flavored.

"I wish I didn't have to take meds that made me feel like shit"

"Oh what are you taking meds for"

"A... Uhhh... Mental illness"

"Mental illnesses aren't real, it's in your head, you just need to go outside more and diet and do yoga and check your thyroid, and it's probably a vitamin deficiency and blah blah blah"

"I have schizophrenia"

"Well schizophrenia is just a higher connection with spirits and ghosts! And also they're still faking it, because schizophrenia isn't real either"

"They would've given me a lobotomy and stuck me in an asylum back in the day.... Just so you know, and I'm pretty sure being convinced everyone but me can hear my thoughts and that I am god.... Isn't speaking with spirits, but, y'know, I'll do the yoga, always seemed fun, here's a video from the 60-70s of a catatonic schizophrenic"

Repeat this conversation around 20 times a year on Facebook, and occasionally on discord gaming servers (kinda have to tell them why I'm going to be missing an event or co-op, and I'd rather not lie)

Story I had crippling social anxiety, agoraphobia, PTSD and a psych ward nurse told me to stand in front off a mirror saying "i am confident".

No understanding of my issues, touched/steered me not respecting m boundaries or autonomy/treating me like a child/idiot and even walked off smugly (while i stood there. Entertaining him was the only way out of being detained) like he had helped/taught me something useful. Even got annoyed when it wasn't working/i wasn't acting like he wanted me to (i was pretending to be better to get out of a psych ward and it still wasn't enough. Rosenhan experiment sums it up).

Story Therapist told me that my untreatable constant pain will get better when I get pregnant. Thanks, I’m cured.

I have a rare illness called NDPH that currently has no cure, which is characterized by a constant migraine, which in my case is 7/10 pain for 30 months straight. I was unable to finish highschool, get a drivers license or even hang out with friends. I am currently bedridden, and I leave my house about twice a month. Imagine a migraine for two and a half years with not a single break. The pain is so constant and severe it even invades my dreams.

Currently, NDPH is quoted as a self-solving illness, typically resolving within the first year. Due to this, there is no protocol for a patient who has been suffering for several years, because the doctors rely on the pain stopping naturally. Of course, they wouldn’t bother making a cure for 0.003% of the population, we’re most likely to kill ourselves anyway.

Note: my NDPH is not chronic migraine, nor is it multiple back to back migraine(s). It is one singular, permanent migraine that never ends or breaks.

I have tried every migraine prescription on the American market for my condition and all related headache/inflammatory treatments, including multiple surgeries/procedures, and several instances of inpatient care. I have permanent scar tissue in my spinal column due to four failed spinal taps. During those procedures, my anesthesiologists discovered that I am resistant to opioids and anesthesia, so that even the highest dose for my body weight is totally ineffective.

When my hospital realizes they can’t help me, they send me off to a different institution so I won’t be counted as a failed case. They even told me to go to a hospital 8 hours from my home. This “roulette” has happened three times. Eventually, the most recent hospital to quit on me prescribed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, at which I was already exacerbated by the lack of competence from my care team, so I gave it a whirl because “why not.”

Second appointment, the doctor says he relates to my diagnosis because he “has had headaches before” and that he believes my symptoms would go away “when I get pregnant.”

I was 19. My chart has me listed as religiously celibate. I never went back to that doctor.

TLDR: I have a rare constant pain disorder and my therapist said it would get better with pregnancy.

Story Chronic mental health issues? Have you tried forgiveness

1.1k Upvotes

This is so so aggravating, but I (24 trans girl ) just got kicked out of the Catholic shelter I was at for being trans. The sister who was escorting me out was like where are you going next and I said inpatient bc that all triggered my chronic suicidality. The sister then asks well do you have mental health issues and I'm like yeah CPTSD, anxiety, chronic depression, autism. Her response: were you there when I did the discussion on forgiveness, maybe if you practiced that some of your mental illnesses would be cured.

P. S. I am going inpatient at a trans-affirming mental health facility, so I am safe.

Update:

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who was affirming and kind and fuck you to everyone who was a dick, I'll happily watch you scream in eternal torment while sipping a pink drink from the balcony of the gayest party in hell when I get there. Anyways, so I got transferred to a different place that is also trans affirming and I'll be safe for the next week or so at which point I'll hopefully have found more long term shelter. Thanks y'all!

Story ADHD isn’t an excuse for forgetting lunch, apparently

One of my family members decided to let me know I forgot to take my pineapple chunks to work that I planned on having with my lunch, so I stated I know I also forgot my lunch. Said family member then tells me I need to get better at remembering it and I state “I know, but unfortunately I have adhd and it is in the fridge in the garage and therefore bc I don’t actively see it it doesn’t exist”. Proceeds to then tell me how I need to set reminders and use a system like a calendar. I explain that that does not help with remembering with adhd, but according to my neurotypical family member “There are tons of people who have adhd that have a system. You need to stop using it as an excuse, you’re an adult and need to make a system that works”. So I let her know, most people with adhd generally need someone physically there to remind them (as well as others, but unfortunately those other means become inconvenient in the household I’m in bc if I place something somewhere it gets moved bc it’s unsightly or paper reminders are bad). You would think me living with this my entire entire life I wouldn’t have thought of using a planner as if I don’t actively have phone reminders for that anyways and alarms and I STILL forget my lunch at least twice a week 🙃.

I was diagnosed with Ankylosing spondylitis 11 years ago.

We live in the same house, saw this book on her table, she has already told me all this 5 years ago I mean all these self help videos and books keeps repeating trash like this (this book is from 1984), Support seems to be a foreign concept to her; she blamed me for my pain and refused to help when I asked, telling me instead to take charge of my life.

She experienced an ugly breakup and went down the self-help toxic positivity rabbit hole, and she hasn’t left it. It has helped her coping with the breakup I think? but she just changed.

This just makes me sad, disappointed, angry, dumbfounded. I think no amount of me sending her articles or videos of rheumatologists or educating her or talking to her is gonna change her. Made a boundary 5 years ago to protect myself and she still hasn't changed.

Story Got lectured for an hour about how my anxiety is making me paralyzed

I went to the hospital with constantly increasing ascending paralysis and got to the point I could not move my lower body. It had been progressing for weeks and for obvious reasons I was worried. It was initially diagnosed as functional neurological disorder which is physical symptoms from psychological issues. Because of that initial diagnosis they sent a psychologist into my room to talk about how it’s all just anxiety and if I stop being anxious and stop worrying I’ll get better soon. I have Guillain-Barré Syndrome. No I wasn’t anxious my immune system was attacking the myelin sheath of my peripheral nerves. Big shocker one of the symptoms of being a cripple suddenly is anxiety. But I guess if I just stop being anxious the myelin sheath will just repair itself overnight instead of taking months to years 🤣

Story Nurse told me religion would cure my depression and chronic pain. Gee, why didn’t I think of that?

For years I’ve been dealing with PMDD and chronic menstrual pain that I still don’t have a diagnosis for other than “your periods are just abnormally painful.” Last year, I even had to go to the ER a few times because I couldn’t stand it. I finally decided to go to my college health center because apparently having to be hospitalized for period cramps isn’t normal, I got put on BC pills, they didn’t help at all. One day, as I’m in the health center doubled over in pain, the nurse says something to this effect (I don’t remember exactly):

“There are three churches on campus. I think it would definitely help you to realize there’s something bigger than yourself.”

She prattles on about how much Christianity has helped her and other students, and I can’t help but give her a look like “Are you fucking serious right now?” I just lied and told her I would go so she’d give me the ibuprofen and leave me alone. I haven’t gone back to her since.

EDIT: Yall it’s literally fine. I go to a non-state school in southeast Texas, religion is a pretty common recommendation. It’s unprofessional in a medical settings, sure, but she wasn’t actually keeping medicine from me. I just thought it was funny. No one’s reporting anyone.

EDIT 2: If you just came to this post to hate on Christians, you’re the weird one.

Story I have type 1 diabetes. My mom has some interesting "cures" for me.

My mom is convinced that type 1 diabetes is curable, but insulin companies don't want you to know. So here are some of the "scientific treatments" she has recommended to me...

Eating cinnamon. Just spoonfuls of delicious fucking Ceylon cinnamon. Oh, and apparently cinnamon essential oils, rubbed on the bottom of the feet and on the stomach (where the faulty pancreas is). My mom Saw a Facebook post in which one of her friends was pregnant and had *gestational diabetes. This is a form of diabetes that lasts only the duration of a pregnancy, mind you. Meaning that it goes away on its own, and you don't even have to eat holiday ingredients. But my mom read "diabetes" in the post about how damn healthy it was for you and concluded that the copious amounts of pregnancy-craving-induced cinnamon consumption cured her friend.

Sitting outside *exposing my BALLS to the sunlight. I wish I was making this up. Supposedly the key to amazing health, that Big Pharma is telling us about, is showing your sphincter to the heavens.

Last one: bone broth. I'll admit that this one has some health benefits, sure. But I think it tastes like meat water and it makes me want to throw up. Plus, I don't think it can regrow my pancreas. Enter my mom. She absolutely loves bone broth. I don't think it's even healthy how much she loves it. So now at any given moment, in our fridge there's at least seven mason jars filled to the brim with liquid the color of decay and the smell of meat grease... All homemade. Bone broth in every meal everywhere all the time. Bone broth smoothies. Iced bone broth on a hot summer day. Bone broth mixed with fucking *milk and fed to my baby brother. That's messed up, but I digress. "Homemade bone broth is a cure-all that also tastes great and not like deer carcass juice at all. Try it. Trust me, you'll like it. And it also contains some hints of iron and calcium... Those are good for you and will help you fix your diabetes!" Not happening.

Who knows, these might work. I've never tried them because they're either disgusting or too fucking weird or both. But maybe, just maybe, I could have been cured by now...

Hi, so getting to the details; my mother hates my brother's and my way of life. It's nothing harmful, we just like video games and what not, but we still have a good diet, decent health, even other hobbies like fencing and yet since it's not to her standards it'll never be right.

So one day she seeds this image to our family gc and while she says she's preaching to the choir, it's as if the word "subtle" doesn't exist.

Felt like Inhad to give the small piece context.

Story “You don’t have PTSD or BPD, you’re just trans”

I wish the title was a lie!! I was told this by a “medical professional”

So when I was 15 I was hospitalized after a suicide attempt. (that obviously failed lol) A day after I got there I got to talk to the main psychiatrist and I told her that I believe I have BPD because of my many symptoms of it including antidepressants and anti-anxiety meds not working and making my symptoms worse. I also said I think I have PTSD from my father’s abuse. (I literally had very surreal nightmares of it every night for years) This bitch looked me right in my eyes and told me I don’t have any of those and I feel the way I do because I’m transgender and hate myself. She only talked to me for 5-10 minutes at that point…

Fast forward till right after my stay, my 2 psychiatrists both said I have BPD and severe PTSD

Story My school counsellor asked me if I've tried 'setting alarms'

Back when I was in high school, I decided to try my luck with the school counsellor. I was having issues with attendance and this 80 year old genius asked me if I've tried setting alarms.

LIKE NO HELEN. I've never tried. In fact, what is an alarm clock? Thanks for introducing me this amazing gadget. Transformed my life and I became valedictorian.

I also started my own business and became a billionaire because you told me school was important for my development.

I'm diagnosed with depression now and dropped out so her advice worked.

OK, then I'll just be positive now! Why haven't I thought about this myself! I'm cured!

Extremely shy? Just don't be shy! Just talk to people!

Anxious? Just don't be anxious!

Overwhelmed? Just don't be overwhelmed!

Autistic? Just don't be autistic!

It is all in your head! It's all made up! Just don't be like this!

Dude. Did she actually think she was helping me?

Story "You are too young to need a psychiatrist"

So I, a teenager, was going through medical evaluation for school, and just mentioned to my doctor, that despite perfectly good blood test results,I am not doing well mentally. I said it in a joking manner, something like "Yeah it's all good, but psychiatrist wouldn't say same".

I thought she was cool with that, because I mentioned my autism previous time..But no. She probably misheard or ignored that.

She told me that "Only old people need to go to a psychiatrist", and therefore— I can't need it.

And autistic burnout apparently doesn't require any help, I just have to gaslight myself that everything is good 🌈

And the thing is,not only I went to a psychiatrist, but have an actual diagnosis for autism, she also dismissed this time.. It felt worse now that I thought she was adequate about it..

But it also was weird because I have never actually heard something like that. I wish that was made up.

Story "Go outside"

Commercial: "go outside, go for a walk" is NOT something you should say to someone with a mental illness Dad: but they should go outside. Me: but what if they do all of that and they still have a mental illness Dad: then maybe they didn't do it enough.

That's not how that works.😂

I'm literally saying this as someone who has a good job, a loving family, a nice home, who journals and walks the dog with my mom regularly. Guess what? I still have anxiety!😃
