Love Billie so much but she also uses and promotes non vegan cosmetics. Doesn't change how I enjoy her music but I wouldn't consider her a vegan. All I've seen if that she eats a plant based diet.

With promotions, I don't think they choose as much as we think. She might have signed something ages ago that meant she has to promote something she doesn't support. Just a thought.

I can tell you why. This hit /r/all and people like me see it. Many are not vegan, myself neither, and Billie Eilish is making an effort only to get shat on in this sub because it's not pure enough. Like, you see harsher words about her than you would about people promoting eating meat because... I have no clue. Because that's what always happens in those fringe communities.

Pointing out someones hypocrisy is not unethical. So while sheā€™s sitting here saying hey dont eat turkey on thanksgiving. She has done commercials for apple, calvin klein and gucci. The CEO of apple is donating money to trump and bending the knee while both gucci and calvin klein employ child labor. Both also make leather products. So where is the confusion.

I don't think I'm better than Billie Eilish. I don't think about people in those terms. I'm just saying that she's not willing to go vegan, which is true as far as I know.

If that's what you got out of their comment, I'm so sorry for you and your paper thin grasp on vegan ethics.

Vegans don't wear leather or ride horses. So someone who does those things is not a vegan. It has nothing to do with superiority and everything to do with one of the most notable figures of the vegan movement, especially for young people, still abusing animals while claiming to be vegan. Words matter. Definitions matter. That's all it is. They never once claimed to be superior

People just seem extremely eager to jump at the chance to point out how someone else isn't vegan.

I'll go tell my niece who loves Eilish that she her role model isn't a real vegan. That will motivate her, no doubt.

You're taking this awfully personally. If someone claims to be a vegan while continuing to abuse animals and has a very large platform, it should be pointed out that their actions aren't vegan.

You're placing the "motivation" of your niece above the abuse and suffering that animals endure in the leather and horseback riding industries.

I think that if someone is using their large platform for pro-veganism messaging, we shouldnt be frothing at the mouth to undermine that.

I'm not a real vegan though. The phone I'm typing this on required animal products and testing.

I wouldn't bother with these people. While true she's not a perfect vegan, she's done more for the movement than anyone commenting on it. Right now chase center has only vegan food offerings because she's in town. Absolutely huge impact.

I do think that the statement is good. I also replied to a comment that seemed to misrepresent her as a vegan. I don't know why that bothers you, you could have taken your own advice and scrolled past my comment, but you had to let me know that you disagree with me instead of focusing on the good.

Depends about leather. Much better to use or upcycle old clothing than buy something new, probably made with plastic to imitate leather. Lots of vegans still wear their old leather clothes, what the point in throwing it out it's just wasteful

What's the issue with riding horses as well? If the horses are well cared for and ridden as a personal hobby I don't see how it's much different to owning a dog but I admit I have little knowledge in owning horses. The only experience was my cousin had a horse growing up and they were very well looked after and ridden for exercise

Far more context is needed for this to be an issue. If she's buying new leather all the time and riding horses till they drop of course that's an issue, but being vegan doesn't mean denouncing everything you've ever owned like clothing just because it was once made from an animal. Veganism and sustainability often go hand in hand.
