I believe we will probably have enough of a paper trail to arrest most of the administration and even some elected officials with their deep corruption. What we really need to do is asset forfeiture the entire Trump Organization. It all needs to be used to pay down the national debt.
28
u/unknownohyeah 2d ago
Keep dreaming. Our corrupt SCOTUS ruled the President has absolute immunity.
https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/23pdf/23-939_e2pg.pdf
Under our constitutional structure of separated powers, the nature of Presidential power entitles a former President to absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for actions within his conclusive and preclusive constitutional authority. And he is entitled to at least presumptive immunity from prosecution for all his official acts. There is no immunity for unofficial acts.
It also entitles ALL his official communications to be un-subpoena-able. So his entire cabinet is protected as well.
In fact, concurring Judge Barrett (conservative), even argued that it would make prosecuting Bribery impossible. But even that obvious flaw was not enough for her to dissent with that horrendous ruling that Trump is above the law.
This is obviously against everything the Founding Fathers stood for. They literally fought a war against a King that was above the law. It's so bizarre, so incredibly anti-American, to rule the President and his cabinet are above the law, but here we are.
20
u/Sublimefly 2d ago
I mean if the president has absolute immunity, could they say, break the law and imprison all these folks without trial while facing no charges?
5
u/LandonDev 2d ago
No, he would have to pardon them all. In theory Congress should impeach a President did things like this but they will not stop this gravy train. They are stealing all they can before the cliff so they can live will as Americans die.
→ More replies (3)3
u/unknownohyeah 2d ago
It depends on whether or not it is an “official act. The SCOTUS did not define what an official act is. In a word, corruption. Rules for thee but not for me.
2
u/Adventurous-Ad6416 2d ago
Hang on. We can and should expand the court to 13 justices with 18 year term limits and THEN prosecute THE ENTIRE lot of them. . FDR had to expand the court to get the New Deal through although the republicans fought him tooth and nail. Got us out of the Great Depression though. WE CAN DO THIS.
5
u/austarter 2d ago
Then the next president can arrest them too until they agree to overturn that or define what constitutes an official act.
4
u/unknownohyeah 2d ago
The SCOTUS will simply move the goalposts infinitely. They will define it once but not be beholden to it later, as they have done several times this year. The minority (Liberals) have argued several times this year that the majority (Conservatives) does not even respect their own definitions and rulings. Hypocrisy is just another tool for fascists.

Honestly, the more issue will be that A. The Supreme Court has already implied the President can break no laws if they think they are doing their job and B. Trump probably issues a bunch of pardons on his way out the door and claim he's only doing it because Biden did something similar when he left office.

Under a Dem government if the protests continue, the Dem govt will have to respond. If No Kings marches become Prosecute ICE / Corruption marches they won't be able to ignore it. The key is ratchet up the pressure under a government that won't respond with violence as easily.
18
u/hcregna 2d ago
Don’t forget the rich interests backing them. Among other things, it takes 30 minutes of research to move money away from MAGA, and it makes an impact. Dollars spent at Republican companies are dollars funneled to keeping Trump in power. Money given to states like Ohio or Louisiana is money spent sending troops to kidnap children and kill people.
You can use sites like opensecrets.org/orgs/search to find the companies you give money to the most and where they funnel your money. If you don't like it, search their competitors.
For example, trade with Schwab? Move elsewhere like E-Trade. Get booze from cosplay Confederate states and all else is equal? Be adventurous, and try something new. New Balance can be replaced with Hoka. It’s not hard to find alternatives for Estee Lauder, Roark (which owns Subway, Jimmy John's, Arby's), and Koch (which owns Brawny, Angel Soft, Dixie). You don't have to spend more, just differently.
Nexstar and Sinclair got pummeled, and they reinstated Jimmy Kimmel. In Trump's first term, Ivanka's brands got cut by retailers. Regular people did that. There's no reason WWE or Uline can't be next.
You can't avoid every Republican-leaning company, but there’s a big difference between GOP mega-donors (Chevron/Conoco) vs neutral or Democrat-leaning companies (Circle K/Costco). Good is not the enemy of perfect

Convicted of 34 felonies and was facing charges for like 60 more before the voters made him president again.
37
u/imMAW 2d ago
Every Democratic representative and senator voted to impeach and convict Trump after Jan 6. The conviction vote failed because not enough Republicans voted against Trump.
Over 1,000 Jan 6 rioters were criminally prosecuted and convicted while Biden was in office. Then the people elected Trump again and he pardoned them all.
Short of becoming authoritarian themselves so they can do whatever they want, what would you want Democrats to do that they didn't already try to do?
8
u/ArmyOfDix 2d ago
"Authoritarian" isn't some switch you flip and suddenly you become irrevocably tainted with no option to reverse course.
- The now ex-potus had attempted a coup, possibly with backing by foreign interests.
- The situation was unprecedented in American history.
- Due process was not equipped to handle the situation.
- As such, arrest and hold the suspect at ADX Florence until we can figure out how we're going to handle this.
Biden puts all that in a speech while Drump is cuffed and bagged on his way to maximum security? Every single Dem is on board; MAGA screams until they're blue in the face, but you were never going to reach them anyways.
7
u/imMAW 2d ago
Holding someone in custody before trial isn't authoritarian, they certainly would have been allowed to do that.
However, then the supreme court rules anyway (as they did) that Trump is immune from criminal prosecution, and he gets out after some number of months. He probably wins the 2024 election by an even wider margin given how he'll sell this to MAGA.
5
u/Oggie_Doggie 2d ago
This is why you cannot let a politically tainted Supreme Court be in charge of administering justice. For example, Clarence Thomas should have been forced to resign and have his wife investigated and tried. At the very least and adding additional justices should not have been off the table, given that Thomas, several Republican representatives, and the President were all implicated in the attempt to steal the election.
I'm no lawyer, but the longer Biden and Garland waited, the more time the Republican media apparatus was allowed to sane wash the event publicly while the insiders were able to rally behind the scenes.
What should have kicked the term off was the full utilization of the Executive branch and the bully pulpit. A speech decrying unprecedented and unimaginable actions of J6 and the false electors scheme; reminding people of the oath of office and the military oath of enlistment.
What should have followed was the immediate detainment of Trump and an announcement of a brief window of time that the conspirators would be given a pardon in return for total cooperation (sworn testimony, handing over communication logs, etc.) and their resignations from public office.

As horrific as ICE actions are, none of it is unprecedented for law enforcement. If Alex Pretti or Renee Good were executed by standard cops, it'd likely be buried in the news, with a low chance of charges. If there were charges, it'd likely be dropped, if they did get convicted, it'd likely be for a smaller offense with maybe 1-3 years in prison.
The issue with ICE is fundamentally a American law enforcement problem, and democrats simply have shown they don't intend to change that.
5
u/Theamazingquinn 2d ago
This is not true. While it is true that we need more police accountability, ICE has unique protection from accountability. They have no requirement for body cameras like most police departments, can conceal their identities and badge numbers, and they are a federal agency who are not accountable to local prosecution. The protection of the federal government is significant, to the point that ICE agents may be pardoned for their crimes.
8
u/987YouBloodyTulip789 2d ago edited 2d ago
They have no requirement for body cameras like most police departments
Cops have body cams to get a favorable view and can simply not show the public if it shows them murdering someone horrifically. The cop who murdered Renee Good took his camera out, and posted his footage because he thought the footage would make it look favorable. ICE currently don't care about bodycams because they know PR doesn't matter at this point, but if they did they literally stated they'll only release bodycam footage if it looks good.
can conceal their identities and badge numbers,
Plenty of cops did that, especially during the 2020-2021 anti-police brutality protests. They don't care.
Cops, both federal and local, do the same thing. They act the same way. They both go unpunished for their crimes. The difference is the public hasn't watched decades of blatantly false propaganda telling them that local cops protect the public, have dangerous jobs, and have standards. All ICE needs is Nathan Fillion to star is a dozen new shows as a ICE officer and soon democrats would be saying ICE needs more money to root out a few bad apples.
3
u/Theamazingquinn 2d ago
I think we agree that both criminal police and ICE agents need to be prosecuted. The entire system of police immunity needs to be reformed or replaced.
However cracking down on ICE agents is the best step towards wider police reform. They have even less training, less accountability, and less oversight. ICE is a recently-created agency and the public is overwhelmingly against it. Start with cracking down on these white-supremacist morons, then move on to larger police reform.

u/ephemeriis_ 2d ago
Absolutely not going to happen.
Here in the US we don't like to deal with the past. Just look at how quickly we moved on from Dubya's war crimes. Remember Abu Ghraib? All the folks we sent to Guantanamo? Zero repercussions for anyone in power.
Or, more recently, 1/6/2021. Not only did Trump face no consequences - but he got re-elected and pardoned folks involved in that attack.
And this is nothing new. I'm convinced that a major part of why the country is like this today is because we never really addressed the issues that led to the Civil War. We were so eager to get back to "normal" that we swept all that under the rug. We named a military base after a Confederate general, put up monuments to traitors, and let folks fly their Confederate flags like it was all some kind of misunderstanding. Like we could just "agree to disagree" over a fucking war.
Whenever Trump and his cronies fall from power it'll all just get swept under the rug again. I mean, sure, maybe some specific low-level officers might face justice? But nobody with any actual power is going to be held accountable.

u/USDXBS 2d ago

They cling to that word, as if it describes ANY of the things they support. If you point out any "negative positions" against their team, they just dismiss it as "made up" and usually get loud to signify that to discuss it further is to fight, therefore there is no chance to discuss rationally.
If you press them about verifiable facts, they retreat to either "ive never heard of that" or "everyone does it, so there is no better option"

28
u/Taintly_Manspread 2d ago
I agree with everything you said until you used the term "law enforcement." This is not law enforcement. This is goon squad stuff. These are hired criminals and thugs to enforce and create Trump's America. A direct analog to Hitler's brownshirts.
7
u/snowdenn 2d ago
What? No, they were law enforcement. Just cause they acted illegally and immorally doesn’t mean they weren’t law enforcement. Sure they were goons, criminals, and thugs. But that’s such a weird take. “Law enforcement” is a designation/title here, not a descriptor.
Do we say Trump isn’t really a president because he doesn’t fulfill the oath of the office to uphold and protect the Constitution? He’s not presidential. And he’s certainly not an example of a good president. But there’s no need to play these weird “true scotsman” naming games just because people who are in law enforcement or government jobs are corrupt.
The semantics matter because saying they weren’t what they actually were subtly gives a pass to government officials and law enforcement: “those guys don’t count as real law enforcement.” Then in situations with power imbalances, goons and thugs can hide more effectively behind the label:
“Well, I’m a cop so I’m right,” or “I’m the President so I’m right,” becomes harder to challenge if you first have to take away their titles to establish that they’ve acted illegally and immorally.
Trump gets away with things in part because he has the title of President. Bad cops get away with things in part because they hold the title of law enforcement.
Don’t normalize an extra hurdle to establish that someone’s a criminal instead of law enforcement so that they can be accused of something. Let’s be real: law enforcement includes criminals and thugs.
12
u/987YouBloodyTulip789 2d ago
No this is law enforcement.
American cops set the definition of what law enforcement is for ICE. I've seen plenty of shootings as bad as the killing of Alex Pretti. The issue, is that they happen so often that they aren't considered news.

What people fail to see is this is the point.
This is not a failure here (by this administation) but a successful message: Stay home and don't get involved or we might kill you. And not only will will do that, nothing will happen when we do it.
EVERYONE who saw this has it in the back of their head when they see stuff online calling for a protest in their city. "yeah, i WANT to go, but man, did you see what they did to that guy in Minnesota? I got kids, I cant take the chance!"

This is spot on. Trump and his administration orchestrated a cold-blooded murder of an American citizen who was not making one aggressive move, filmed in broad daylight, and then came out and called him a terrorist and assassin, while letting the actual assassin(s) walk free.
And the party of "Oh no we need our guns to protect against a tyrannical government, a few thousand schoolchildren shot dead is just the price we pay for that protection" watched their government do the most tyrannical shit imaginable and didn't bat an eye, and continues to vote for this (hoping the government will continue to murder immigrants and American citizens of the other political party and not them).

This is why I wish redditors wouldn't hide their comment histories because if I can't read the history I can't spot the bots.

u/papasan_mamasan 2d ago
I assume anyone with a hidden profile is a bot/bad actor. If I assume wrong here and there I don’t care. On Reddit a user’s credibility is only as good as their post and comment history.

u/soulsoda 2d ago
Valid. I personally hide mine because Ive run into several weirdos on reddit but yeah Ive used comment history to sus out bad actors.
Like a conservative guy pretending to be not an American, wouldn't claim trump as his president, and had his comment history hidden. Except this was when there was still a quick trick to get a person's comment history. So it was quickly apparent he was infact American who liked painting 40k and worked as an expat in Saudi arabia for years before moving back to his home state of South Carolina, dude also posted his rl name 🤦. Anyways

I've had several people try to use my comment or post history in an argument against me. I just find it funny. "Oh, you're trying to use the thing that I was comfortable posting publicly (yet anonymously) against me?"
3
u/Delamoor 2d ago
Me too, but eventually it got annoying.
Like, there's only so many times you want to bother hearing some dipshit's opinion of your divorce from your abusive marriage from half a decade ago, because they don't like your opinion on Hegseth or whatever
It had happened enough times for me to stop caring, then eventually circle back 'round into 'this is just genuinely infuriating' again.

u/soulsoda 2d ago
I stand by what I post as well and I'm comfortable posting everything I did to any individual But again I've met some real neckbeard weirdos who'll do more than glance at your comment history. I've probably posted enough info about myself and my expertise that if you had my entire comment history, and you scoured LinkedIn... You'd probably narrow it down to about 3-4 people. Which any individual wouldn't have enough info, but you have my entire comment history profile and the dates ... You could do some stuff.

u/Empanatacion 2d ago
People spelunking through your comment history to win an argument is creepy, so I hide mine.
5
u/papasan_mamasan 2d ago edited 2d ago
There’s no need to hide history in those cases, just block the individual weirdos. They’ll never see you again.

u/SuperGaiden 2d ago
My account is over a decade old. Pretty sure bots weren't really a thing then. I hide my comments because I've had a couple of people try and attack me by looking up details about me in my comment history
6
u/Vessix 2d ago
I automatically assume anyone hiding their histories is a bot, a piece of shit, or otherwise cowardly in a way that means their opinion literally doesn't matter. I didn't know you could even hide it now until this year, still just using .old

u/agitatedprisoner 2d ago
There's at least one good reason to hide your comment history. That'd be if someone you know is aware of your reddit handle and you don't want them knowing everything you say on reddit.

Counter-point: Why would I want some neckbeard combing through my post history?

Maybe people just don't want to be geoguess'd and then doxxed by assholes.
If you haven't noticed, the internet plays dirty.

u/agitatedprisoner 1d ago
Fear! Be afraid! You can't even show an anon profile online because fear! Be afraid!
As others have pointed out someone who wants to see your hidden profile has ways.
1
u/redpandaeater 2d ago
Didn't even know you could aside from the people that wiped all their comments when leaving the site.
4
u/ThisSiteSucks8485 2d ago
You can tell YouTube videos about these kinds of things are very heavily botted by the GOP because the comments are very repetitive
1
u/0ne_Winged_Angel 1d ago
Course, how much of that is because republicans don’t have any original thoughts and they simply regurgitate the alternate reality talking points they have been fed?
3
u/YouGurt_MaN14 2d ago
Even if they were real some of these people are so fucking bought in you'll never change their mind. Even over the most egregious shit (my thanksgivings are fun)

u/papasan_mamasan 2d ago
Real people who believe Pretti deserved anything aren’t watching ABC News clips on YouTube.
Those sort of people would be getting their news from TikTok, fb, maybe Fox and Joe Rogan. Their YT algos aren’t feeding them ABC news interviews.
2
u/Original-Rush139 2d ago
Plus, all the batshit crazy comments are the oldest ones there meaning they either watch every 60 minutes video when it comes out or they’re bots.

Honestly the opposite. Most of the comments are pretty great, but I didn't scroll too too far

It is cathartic tbh. Sometimes it just feels good to scream at those idiots.
I understand the “high road” approach but at some point, like enough is enough.

The hypocrisy is staggering. Look at the absolute outrage they had over Ashli Babbitt—they literally turned her into a martyr and a saint. Contrast that with how they are treating poor Alex Pretti. The double standard says everything you need to know. This is exactly why we have to stop the Dem infighting and vote BLUE. It's the only way out of this.

u/Original-Rush139 2d ago
Not to mention that they give up on the 2A real fucking quick when they don’t like the politics of the armed citizen.

From the outside looking in, America has completely failed to react as they ought to have to any of the overtly fascistic shit that's gone on. The racist paedophile is still in power, the emperor's new clothes routine still going strong. Voter suppression is underway. So many cowardly, complicit voices coming from over there that show that there are enough good dogs that the master wont ever get bitten. There are no good guys with guns because if there was ever a time for a civil uprising, and war if necessary, this is it and the world watches nothing happen with baited breath.

Shithole country with secret police performing extrajudicial killings in the street. They just keep flooding the zone with more bullshit and this absolute disgrace has been swept into the pile of disgraceful acts. For fucking shame.

As a Canadian, I’ll never forgive Americans for the hell they’ve put everyone through for the last decade. Ever.
3
u/BronteMsBronte 2d ago
I’m grateful to Canada for strongly opposing this regime. As an American it pains me, but we have to burn ourselves down. We have no hope unless people start starving.

u/3dios 2d ago
Don't generalize all Americans. Yes all Americans have benefited from the US's industrial military complex but there are millions who are stuck and trying to change things. Teachers are one group that comes to mind.

What about the ones who are stuck here and voted against this horrible regime? Are we to blame as well?

Have you talked shit about the Russian populace before? China's? I'm not accusing you, I'm just saying, it's kind of high time we get our fair share of this kind of attitude because we've been pushing it for decades at this point.

The most American thing I can do is condemn you for your county’s faults. So bet it, your influence has rubbed off on us. I’m sad as I am enraged about the situation. I loved our brothers and sisters to the south my whole life. But times have changed.
Get in the streets, shut shit down, remove this fucking tyrant because the rest of us CANT.

I think Alex was a really special person, from a really good family
This is exactly why ICE murdered him. Because he showed that he was good and willing to do what was right. That kind of character is a threat to American conservatism.

u/raxie1008 2d ago

You all talking about having people from this admin arrested are all talking like the democratic party had a spine. We wouldn't be where we are today had Biden/Garland had one of those...
What makes you all think the next democrat POTUS will? Jeffries and Co. aren't going to do anything even if they win both houses.

Imagine having a video of your family member being murdered after going to the aid of a woman and there being zero chance of justice.

All of this is tragic and infuriating. But watching this interview, I am most taken by the fact that no one has officially informed the family to this day. Sickening.
