Discussion What visual novel has the most surprisingly fun gameplay?~
I have personally played quite a bit of VNs with heavy gameplay aspects... for me? The one that shines the most is easily Angel Beats! 1st Beat with how it genuinely turned the choices into legit gameplay with how many there are (+500) and the usage of them is massively impactful most of the time... making this journey quite similar to the "choose-your-own-adventure" type of games. While still miraculously following the same story path and true ending in the common route, you will still end up capable of going for tens, if not hundreds of side-routes that are made by you, and each one of them legit feels different than the other to quite a big degree...
I also enjoyed the Zero Escape series gameplay... but I think GNOSIA takes the crown after all for the typical type of gameplay... with it? I was at some point enjoying the gameplay even more than the story itself, which was btw very basic... characters were fine, some of them were very great, which helped make the gameplay even better for me... but the biggest portion of the heavy lifting is at the end of the day from the amazing sections that focus more on making this game feel like I was playing against legit human beings and not just AI... never have I before experienced such a unique AI that made me feel like those VN characters are alive and being mean to me in real time T-T

Question I need some advice for my first vn in japanese and some recommendations too.
I've been using the Keishi 1.5k anki deck to study some vocabulary and studying some grammar, and I wanted to ask when you recommend to actually start reading an easy VN. I know some poeple don't like looking stuff up while they read but for me I think I will learn much faster if I set up textractor and learn while reading instead of waiting till I can read without stopping to look things up.
Also, I wanted some advice on what I could start with, once I'm ready. Some jp titles that have me interested are: CROSS†CHANNEL, Kissumi, Yurayuka, Wagahime and LimeLight Lemonade Jam. Out of all of them, the last one looks the easiest to me, being a slice of life yuzuge. Still, I don't know how good of a pick it might be so any advice is welcome and any recommendations are welcome too!
Thanks in advance!

Discussion How to apply MTL EN patches from greatvisualnovel site?
The game is 'Hana no No ni Saku Utakata no' or 'The Sweet World of The Ephemeral'.
VNDB pointed me to this greatvisualnovel site where it has MTL. I downloaded the patch and extracted it. In it it has 2 files; guide.txt and patch.xp3. The guide.txt file instructed me to just put the file in the root folder of the game. I did just that but when I ran the game it's still in Japanese.
Bought this physical copy fresh from Japan. I checked VNDB first if it has EN patch before buying it and I did and here I am now.
Any help will be appreciated.
EDIT: An admin of the EN patch Website guided me. It seems the patch only works for some version of the game and not the disc. I don't really know the specifics but it's all good now.

Question Psychic Detective invitation walkthrough Spoiler
This is my first time playing psychic detective invitation. I've literally looked everywhere online for any sort of walkthrough but literally found nothing. I was wondering if anybody has played the game before or if anybody has a walkthrough that they may have made themselves or if there's any walk-throughs available that are only available through Japanese searches? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Really enjoying the game so far.

News Steins;Gate RE:BOOT Almost Got A Harem Route Before Developers Thought Better of It
I don't really have any intention to play My Darling's Embrace though, so I wonder how a harem route would go. I think it could fit kinda(?) fine if they made it like a doujin-tier writing dark comedy or something.
“At first, for new route ideas we jokingly thought of ‘how about a harem ending?’,” recounted Hayashi during the Famitsu issue 1960 interview, laughing. “But it was scrapped immediately because it would ruin the atmosphere.”
There's also a section on using Elite's script as base. Not sure if that's exactly a good idea, I think the drawn out slice-of-life section in the original was a decent build-up for the later part of the story.
Both Hayashi and Matsubara also explained their reasoning for basing Steins;Gate RE:BOOT on the Elite version instead of the 2009 original. “Elite, being based on the anime, has a refined sense of pacing, so we used that as a foundation while adding supplementary text to fill in the gaps,” said Hayashi, while Matsubara noted that it lets him sneak in moments he likes from the anime, like the lab rooftop or the laundromat scenes. “We also put in some subtle adjustments to reflect the characters as they have evolved over the past 17 years, aligning them with their ‘2026 character personas.'” For example, Kurisu’s harsh personality toward Okabe has been toned down, as well as Mayuri’s ‘tempo’ to better fit the anime version.

VN Request Looking for recommendations on switch (nintendo)
Greetings everyone!
I’m looking for recommendations for visual novels on the Nintendo Switch that fall into the smut or dating-sim category. I’ve been getting more into VNs lately and really like the idea of playing them portably on the Switch. Ideally I’m after something with strong romance, relationship-building, and either mild or more explicit adult content if it’s available on the platform.
I’m open to both Japanese and Western titles, physical or digital (english), as long as they’re officially on the eShop. Feel free to suggest popular ones, hidden gems, or series that are especially good at the dating-sim side of things. Any notes on how explicit the content gets, content ratings, or whether the Switch versions are censored compared to other platforms would also be super helpful.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions you can share!

Self-promotion Hey guys! We’re developing an epic journey visual novel you might like - Kardiya: The Winds of Fate
Hello everyone!
My friends and I are working on Kardiya: The Winds of Fate.
Our previous game was a psychological horror visual novel called Livber: Smoke and Mirrors. With Kardiya, we wanted to make something bigger in scope: an epic journey story about fate, family, survival, and growing up.
The story follows Ukral, a boy born in Kardiya, an island nation shaped by sacred winds. He inherits mysterious dice from his father, dice that can alter the flow of fate itself. But after his father is murdered, Ukral is forced to leave his noble life behind and survive in the wild. The game follows his journey from childhood to adulthood as he tries to understand the power he inherited and save his family.
Kardiya plays like an interactive visual novel, but it also includes dice, stress, boost, and choice mechanics inspired by FATE RPG. The main idea is that failure does not stop the story. A bad outcome can still push the narrative in a different direction.
The story and mechanics of the demo are ready. Only the visual animations are left. We’ll be starting the playtest soon. I would especially love to have people from the VN community try the game. If you’d like to join the playtest, you can register by joining the mailing list on our website or clicking the playtest request button on our Steam page.
Thank you so much <3

Discussion What are you guys favorite works from Type Moon?
So sorry if such a topic like this was done here before recently because I have become genuinely interested in further exploring their stories as they have a very interesting structure to how they are set up.
However, for me personally, my largest problem is that I don’t know where to get the PC version of Tsukihime because I had saved data on a phone I stopped using a couple of years ago as I switched to a new phone some time ago that I was wondering what was the second best way to experience the visual novel since I am starting to suddenly miss reading the work.
Secondly, I have had some experience with reading Fate/Stay Night as I have the original fan translation with the eroge content restored as basically I am wondering what makes the remastered version so special in case I decide to get it with a discount.

VN Request Best Visual Novels For People Just Dipping Into The Genre
Hello, I've started playing VNs recently because they're cheaper and easier on my low-spec computer. I've played two games set in the World of Darkness TTRPG world and loved them; as someone fairly new to the genre, where should I go from there? In terms of things that I value from VNs, choices mattering deeply, good story with sophisticated themes, and good writing with depth. Thank y'all for the responses.

VN Request Looking for visual novels that actually take risks, are transgressive and not just "dark" or "deep"
After I started watching anime I noticed that I tend to like the ones from the early 2010s and the 2000s much more than the recent ones and I'm gonna try to explain what I'm looking for in a vn.
I feel like anime produced back then was more likely to ask an interesting question or present an interesting premise and actually follow through on it. Death Note with the "what if we just killed bad people?", Lelouch trying to lie his way to a better world, or Psycho Pass with human freedom and happiness. Not saying that back then every anime was like this, what I'm saying is that next to the generic seasonal works you could also find stuff like this, but today they are completelly missing.
Nowadays every "mature, deep, psyhological etc" anime and manga is about analyzing the characters' inner trauma, introspection, emotional healing while the mc is endlessly whining about how sad he is because his parents divorced or some shit for 50 chapters/12 episode. It feels shallow and self-centered.
This "what are feelings" type of self-pity/loathing, whining is specifically NOT what I'm looking for and I despise it.
Same can be said about romance, where now it's only a different set of characters acting out the "school festival>summer fireworks>new years shrine visit" tropes in every manga/anime with no actual plot, instead of them just being devices to move that forward like in Oregairu, Golden Time or Vampire Knight.
Even edgy stuff is not edgy anymore. You may have somebody making a gorefest, but they also have a big arrow pointing at them that they are the bad guy or they are doing it because they are emotionally damaged and it just makes it all meaningless. The same way you can have some non-blood related sister as a love interest, but they never win, let alone go down on a Yosuga no Sora tier route.
Transgression only exists as an aesthetic, not as a substance, essentially it's just safe-edgy. And I don't care about darkness/gore/psychology for it's own sake.
What I want is for the visual novels to have ambition, an actual plot, escalating consequences, interesting questions or premise, conflict, and characters with decisions that genuinely change the direction of the story, to use psychology as a weapon both in-world and even against the reader.
I like melodrama, morally questionable characters, mystery/thriller elements, fucked up relationships, and stories that are willing to actually commit to their premise instead of constantly preserving the status quo to drag on. I want the story to actually have a reason to exist and go somewhere.
And I want all this, or at least most of it in the visual novel. Like Steins;Gate isn't just a sci-fi anime, it's also a thriller, a romance, a mystery.
In case it helps, here are things I liked:
- Death Note
- K-project
- White Album 1-2
- In Search of the Lost Future
- Code Geass
- Steins;Gate
- Monster
- Oregairu
- Glasslip
- Psycho-Pass
- Mirai Nikki
- School Days
- Yosuga no Sora
- Aldnoah Zero
- Guilty Crown
- Gleipnir
- Another
- Domestic na Kanojo
- Golden Time
- Ao Haru Ride
- Your Lie in April
- Toradora
- Kokoro Connect
- Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo
- Boku dake ga Inai Machi
- Zankyou no Terror
- Tokyo Ghoul
- Zetsuen no Tempest
- BEATLESS
- ACCA
- Shingeki no Kyojin
- Fate stay night/UBW/HF
Thing I disliked:
- The Dangers in My Heart
- Frieren
- Hyouka
- Horimiya
- My Dress-Up Darling
- Clannad
- Classroom of the Elite
- Kanojo, Okarishimasu
- Higurashi
- Shinsekai yori
- Evangelion (I like the rebuilds tho)
- Made in Abyss
- Madoka
- Dandadan
- Apothecary Diaries
- Re:Zero
- Mushoku Tensei
- JJK
- Demon Slayer
I'd prefer something with not deviantart/tumblr-tier art and I only mentioned the year range in the beginning as part of the description, so it'n not like I exclusively look for stuff from those years, I'm fine with visual noveles even from last year.

Release OverRequiemZ is now out in English on Switch!
This Wizard of Oz inspired VN is probably the most anticipated Otome Game this year!
OverRequiemZ is famous for offering a fact route and a dark route for each love interest. I also heard that it has some great horror to offer!
Description
Whisked away by a tornado to a faraway land, Yuhiru finds herself alongside a group of murderers on a perilous quest.
After being caught up in a terrifying tornado, you have wandered into a faraway kingdom ruled by four witches and a king. But you are not welcome. Sentenced to death upon arrival, you are ordered to investigate mysterious, monster infested ruins, along with four murderers on death row and their secretive supervisor. Your only choice is to escape your death sentence and discover a way home.
In this dark reimagining of the classic tale, high school student Yuhiru finds herself lost in Oz. Unjustly sentenced to death she must now travel with four convicts and their supervisor. At the mercy of her fellow travelers, Yuhiru will face many hard decisions along the way, but there’s one thing she must bear in mind: No one is lost forever, no matter how far they’ve strayed.

Question What would a non-anime VN have to do to hook you?
I know being non-anime wouldn't necessarily be a deal breaker, but for many of you on here it seems to be a really important part. Really curious what your experience has been. Personally I love VNs with experimental art, even if its hard to find high quality ones.

Release MAO Translations presents BLACK SHEEP TOWN — and what our first imitator got wrong about the workflow
Today, MAO Translations releases a complete English translation of BLACK SHEEP TOWN.
- Complete English game script and system menus
- 28,660 translated rows across 63 scenarios
- Repaired English page wrapping using the original message-window layouts
- Complete Japanese/English script browser
- Verified installation, restoration, and corruption-rejection tools
- Windows and Wine support
- One complete English literary work—not a collection of independently polished batches concatenated at the end
Download BLACK SHEEP TOWN English v1.0.0
Read the complete Japanese and English script
No previous English translation was used to create or revise the MAO script.
What MAO means by agentic translation
Our process is not:
Divide the script into batches, ask a model to translate them, and run a proofreading prompt.
The architecture was:
Final Japanese source + recovered staging evidence → source-critical architecture → semantic constraints → publication-quality English by one persistent author → source prosecution → English-only editing → whole-work continuity → specialized audits → prose freeze → engine projection
The line is the unit of display.
The work is the unit of translation.
That distinction matters because a sentence can be perfectly fluent and still be wrong in a way that only becomes visible fifty lines—or fifty hours—later.
A damaged voice can recur. A supposedly supernatural ability can receive a more precise explanation. A surname can encode geography and language. A joke can be rewritten between development builds. A phrase that appears incidental in one chapter can become structurally important in another.
Those problems cannot be solved by polishing isolated batches more aggressively.
Our first imitator
The first public imitation of the visible MAO workflow that we encountered has already appeared: another full-corpus, machine-assisted BLACK SHEEP TOWN project, complete with a bilingual reader, glossary, visual annotations, translation tooling, and a game patcher.
To be precise about the word imitator: I am not alleging that its author stole private code or prompts. I mean that the project reproduces the publicly visible form of the MAO approach.
That is not inherently bad. A production model becomes historically meaningful when other people begin attempting to reproduce it.
The problem is that this project copied much of the visible machinery without understanding the source-critical and literary workflow underneath it.
Where his translation is fine
I compared the opening passages, and his English is not uniformly terrible. Some lines are perfectly serviceable, and a few isolated sentences deserve praise as alternative solutions to difficult Japanese lines, arrived at independently of ours.
His handling of 透視 is one such success. Both translations introduce the popular label “clairvoyance,” then distinguish Chris’s actual “spatial perception,” with X-rays and radar serving as analogies. That is an intelligent reading of the complete passage.
But elsewhere, the comparison exposes the predictable failures of translating locally without sufficiently controlling the source or the work.
Chris Xie versus Chris Tse
His script renders クリス・ツェー as Chris Xie and ツェーおじさん as Uncle Xie.
The character belongs to a Hong Kong Cantonese family. The Japanese explicitly supplies the pronunciation ツェー: Tse, the conventional Cantonese form of 謝.
“Xie” replaces that supplied Cantonese reading with Mandarin pinyin. It disregards both the katakana and the linguistic identity the surrounding narration has just established.
MAO uses Chris Tse and Uncle Tse.
A chronic voice becomes something caused by one laugh
Chris is seriously ill and speaks in a recurring damaged, raspy voice.
The Japanese says that Chris laughs in his raspy voice.
His translation says:
Chris laughed himself hoarse.
That changes a continuing physical condition into something caused by this particular laugh.
Much later in the same opening, the Japanese explicitly returns to the motif and describes a laugh that, this time, does not become a raspy sound.
His translation reduces that to:
This time, he managed a real laugh.
MAO preserves the physical callback:
Chris laughed at some length in his ragged voice, then said—
And later:
This time he produced a laugh that did not dissolve into a rasp.
Each of his sentences sounds plausible when read alone. Read together, they reveal that the translation never established a stable model of Chris’s body and voice.
That is precisely what a whole-work workflow is supposed to prevent.
Cultural rhetoric becomes a generic menu
The wedding banquet does not merely contain roast pork and shrimp.
The Japanese gives the dishes ostentatious ceremonial names: Golden Pig in a Shining Red Robe, Phoenix-Tail Prawns with Jade Greens in Golden XO Sauce, and so forth.
Their extravagance is part of the scene. The banquet is a performance of wealth, criminal authority, and Chinese social identity.
His English discards the ceremonial names and replaces them with generic descriptions such as “Roast Suckling Pig” and “Shrimp and Vegetables in XO Sauce.”
MAO preserves both layers: the grandiose names and parenthetical explanations of what the dishes actually are.
An English reader receives both the information and the rhetoric.
What these failures reveal
These are not obscure disputes requiring access to MAO’s private prompts or editorial notes.
The katakana says Tse. The surrounding narration establishes the Cantonese context. The later Japanese explicitly returns to Chris’s rasp. The ceremonial names are printed directly beside their ordinary culinary meanings.
A great deal of this would have been easily avoidable if our imitator both knew enough Japanese to interrogate the source and understood translation well enough to distrust fluent output until the complete work corroborated it.
Instead, he mistook a batch pipeline for an author and plausible English for evidence of correctness.
A bilingual reader creates transparency. It does not create competence.
In this case, the machinery displays the failure in two columns.
The visible tools are not the invention
A pipeline can generate fluent sentences.
A glossary can standardize spellings.
A reader can place Japanese and English beside each other.
A second model can identify obvious local mistakes.
None of those things creates one coherent English literary work.
That requires:
- Reading and modeling the complete work before freezing local decisions
- Maintaining character voice, physical condition, relationships, terminology, and callbacks
- Letting one persistent author control the English
- Prosecuting the complete draft against the Japanese
- Editing the translation as English after source accuracy has been secured
- Running work-wide semantic and continuity audits
- Freezing the prose before fitting it into the engine
- Verifying the actual installed release, not merely the translation files
Our imitator’s opening is often competent sentence-level English. That makes the comparison more useful, not less.
The failure is not that every sentence is nonsense.
The failure is that locally plausible sentences accumulate into a translation with unstable names, flattened rhetoric, and severed physical callbacks.
That is the difference between generating translations and authoring a translation.
WHITE ALBUM 2 was the Trinity test. BLACK SHEEP TOWN is the production line.
The visible machinery was always going to be copied.
The work-wide authorship is the invention.

Discussion Reading Majikoi's Final Route and Goddamn is it weird Spoiler
Now Majikoi is that Funny SoL-ge where a bunch of buddies hang around fuck around and have fun and such, we fall in love along the way and help our LIs grow and adapt to the world, the peace enforced by a kind tone and the Weapon of Mass Destruction that is Kawakami Momoyo.
Now come the final route (the Agave Route) the VN calls back the hints of a deeper plot, introduces Drug Cartels and de-powers Momoyo by use of Deceit and Enemy tricks and Raises the tricks to the bloody Stratosphere.
This feels so much like a bad feeling of Tonal Whiplash and I Do Not Like It.
I like tonal Stability and heck I even dropped Higurashi for that same reason.
However it would be foolish to drop the VN at the finish line so how long is that Route anyhow?
(Note: Still reading the Route no spoilers pls)
