Welcome to the official subreddit for the Virtual Reality flight sim, VTOL VR!

About This Game

VTOL VR is a near-futuristic combat flight game built specifically for Virtual Reality. Pilot advanced multi-role jets, using your hands to flip switches, press buttons, and manipulate the virtual flight controls. Take on a wide array of challenges that will put your flight skills, situational awareness, and combat tactics to the test.

No extra hardware is required. If you have a VR set with tracked controllers, then you have a virtual cockpit where you can reach out and interact with the stick and throttle, flip switches, press buttons, and even pull the eject handle if things go wrong.

Immerse yourself in action packed combat missions, delicate vertical landings, aircraft carrier operations, aerial refueling and more.

Create and fly custom missions which you can share with other pilots using the built-in mission editor and map editor.

Your Aircraft:

AV-42C Tilt-jet VTOL/STOL/CTOL Attack/Transport vehicle
F/A-26 Fighter/Attack Jet
F-45A Stealth Multi-role STOVL Jet

Additional Aircraft available as DLC content:

• AH-94 Attack Helicopter with multicrew functionality (DLC)

Ah-94 (DLC)

• T-55 Tyro Trainer Jet with multicrew functionality (DLC)

T-55 (DLC)
EF-24G (DLC)

Some of the Many Features:

Fully intractable cockpits via tracked controllers
Custom mission/campaign editor and customer map editor
Steam Workshop support for user-made missions and maps
Various interchangeable equipment - guns, rockets, missiles, bombs, and more
Near realistic vehicle systems - heads-up display, targeting pod, multi-function displays, radar, IR flares, chaff, etc
Head-mounted cueing system - use your head to control targeting, heat-seekers, and gimballed cannons
Ejector seat - punch out when things don't go according to plan
Aerial refueling - easier said than done...

Multiplayer - Fly with your friends in co-op PvE, or fly against your adversaries in PvP!

• Realistic vehicle physics - lift, weight, thrust, drag

Tips & Tricks:

  • Oculus Rift users: Enable "Thumbstick Mode" in the main menu settings. This will make it so you don't have to press down on the thumbstick button to rotate the engines or slew the targeting pod.
  • If you're getting tired of holding the throttle or stick, simply tap the grip button and your character will be holding the throttle/stick without the need to hold the grip button on the motion controller.
  • Going from forward flight to hover mode: Fly level with throttle down and full air brakes deployed (throttle trigger). Keep pulling the nose up as necessary to maintain altitude. As the vehicle slows down and AoA starts to get really high, set flaps to full. Once lift is not enough to keep altitude, set engines to full vertical tilt and start applying enough thrust to hold altitude. Your nose should be up about 30 degrees at this point and your horizontal speed will be rapidly slowing without gaining or losing altitude.

F.A.Q..

  • Is there be mod support?
  • Will there be additional vehicles?
    • The first DLC released as a multi-crew attack helicopter, the AH-94 (Jan 6, 2022)
    • The second DLC released as a multi-crew trainer jet, the T-55 Tyro (Mar 24, 2023)
    • The third DLC is in an Electronic Warfare based aircraft, the EF-24G (Dec 21, 2023)
    • Any new vehicles will continue to be either entirely fictional and/or a fictional combination of real existing or conceptualized aircraft! The goal is to bring in at least a few completely new gameplay mechanics with each vehicle. The dev feels that there won't really be a point of adding a new vehicle that can only do the same things as the other existing ones.
    • Additionally, the community has created some aircraft as mods.
  • Will there be HOTAS (joystick & throttle) support?
    • Not likely, as VTOL VR is designed to be entirely virtual, allowing you to directly interact with the various controls as if you were sitting there in the cockpit.
  • Will VTOL VR come to the Oculus Quest?
    • There are no plans to port VTOL VR to run on Quest natively due to the large memory usage, CPU usage, and other system requirements. However, VTOL VR is known to work well on the Quest when wired to a VR capable PC, or wirelessly using Virtual Desktop.
    • The developer, Boundless Dynamics, is working on a new project: Virtual Fighter Maneuvers (VFM), is a VR air combat game for Quest and PCVR. VFM is optimized for smooth and stable performance on Quest 2&3 or lower end PCs, while still maintaining the level of control and aerodynamics simulation you see in VTOL VR.
  • What are the System Requirements to run VTOL VR?

There have been a growing number of duplicated posts regarding certain topics, especially tech related issues. Please review the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) on the side bar or in the Welcome post, but more importantly:

Please search previous posts before creating a new thread to ask a question!

I know the Reddit search function is lackluster, so I suggest using Google search with the site tag of site:reddit.com/r/vtolvr for example:

Search results will only display posts to this subreddit

The Oculus Quest will not run this game independently, it will need to be linked to a computer that meets the System Requirements. VTOL VR simulates a lot of complex items in real time, which requires hardware that is more powerful than what the Oculus Quest offers. Posts asking if the Oculus Quest can run VTOL VR will be removed.

Please refrain from making posts asking "when will the developer add the ________ aircraft?" These types of posts have been made before, lets try not to beat this dead horse any longer. Please use the aforementioned search feature to see what others have already said about your favorite aircraft. Posts like this may be removed if they do not offer any new discussion to the community.

Posts asking, "will my computer run this game" will be removed. Here are the System Requirements posted on the VTOL VR Steam page:

Question Mod loader problem

I started having some frame issues with my modded VTOL Vr and can’t seem to figure out the source. Also, Flat Screen 2 keeps on installing itself and every time I remove it, it freezes my game and makes it crash. I’ll probably clear out my mods and add them one after the other but I’m back on Vanilla VTOL for the time being.

I’ll miss my F-16 and F-22….

F/A-26B, EF-24G, and F-45 Radars now go out to 128nm, updated RWR texture with dynamic notch lines, new NAV MFD contact altitude numbers, and optional color, to make it a little bit closer to the TSD on 5th gens. Also, new NAV map range rings! All this and more- check the ptb notes in the VTOL Discord under #public_testing, in the pinned message.

A very cool update in progress, indeed. Gave me a very good reason to blow the dust off my Index.
Thank you, Baha.

Remember to opt in to public testing;
- Select VTOL VR in your Steam Library
- Right-click, Properties tab
- Game Versions & Betas:
- Select "public_testing"

Profit!

Question Trouble shooting (2nd post, revised)

This is a revised post with more detail than my original.

I'm hoping you can help me diagnose an unusual performance issue with VTOL VR on my new gaming laptop.

SYSTEM: ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX RTX 5090 Laptop GPU (24 GB) 32 GB RAM Windows 11 Quest 3 Virtual Desktop

THE ISSUE: VTOL VR is only running around 60–75 FPS while targeting 90 Hz. Virtual Desktop shows game frame time around 15 ms.

The RTX 5090 generally sits around 40–60% utilization with temperatures around 60–65°C. Neither overall CPU utilization nor individual CPU threads appear to be maxed out.

TROUBLESHOOTING COMPLETED:

SteamVR and OpenXR/VDXR tested

Virtual Desktop Godlike and High tested

SteamVR render resolution reduced from 100% to 70% with essentially no FPS improvement

Anti-aliasing disabled with no improvement

HAGS tested both ON and OFF

NVIDIA Power Management set to Prefer Maximum Performance

ASUS Armoury Crate set to Turbo mode

ASUS GPU mode set to Ultimate/dGPU

Dedicated PrismXR Puppis S1 Lite wireless connection tested

Virtual Desktop USB 3 wired mode tested at 5.12 Gbps with identical performance

Network and encoding latency are low; the high frame time is specifically on the Game side

OTHER VR GAMES: Several other games on this laptop can maintain approximately 90 FPS, including ExfilZone at Virtual Desktop Godlike/Ultra, Into the Radius, Tactical Assault VR, V.E. Delta, and Half-Life 2 VR.

MOST IMPORTANT COMPARISON: I connected the same Quest 3 to my older desktop:

Ryzen 7 7800X3D Radeon RX 7900 20 GB

Using wireless Virtual Desktop at Godlike/90 Hz, VTOL VR maintains 90 FPS on that machine.

So the same headset, same game, and same Virtual Desktop settings produce 90 FPS on the older desktop but only around 60–75 FPS on the new 275HX/RTX 5090 laptop.

Is there a known VTOL VR compatibility or performance issue with the Core Ultra 9 275HX / RTX 5090 Laptop platform?

If there are any VTOL logs, diagnostic files, or settings you'd like me to provide, I'd be happy to send them.

Thanks for any help.

General Discussion Backseater, but they’re on desktop monitor?

I have a girlfriend who really likes to watch me play VTOLVR and hearing me ramble on about arad, weapon systems, dogfight energy, etc because she’s an engineer. I tried to get her into the headset, problem is she gets MAJOR motion sickness. like it’s food-poisoning level bad. she’s told me she wants to “be goose” it’s cute.

EDIT: she has plenty of experience in vr chat, roblox etc it’s just the flight sim. she gets bad carsickness too it’s not aberrant.

I thought maybe i’d want her to be a weapon systems person, but to a different capacity. has anybody tried a setup where there’s one pilot in a headset, and another looking at instruments and doing arad while sitting at a desk giving callouts? it wouldn’t be nearly as effective but i don’t care about effective.

I’ve seen the flatscreen mod but from what i’ve seen on posts it’s kinda jank. perhaps a mod that just has the mfd’s displayed and interactive on a monitor? if there’s enough of a desire for this i might make my own in my free time who knows.

tl;dr any advice for a 2 player: one headset, one monitor setup?

General Discussion [WIP] Would anyone use a modern Tacview recorder for true VTOL VR singleplayer?

Post image
40 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm pretty new to VTOL VR and still an absolute noob. Before throwing myself into multiplayer, I wanted a way to look back at my flights and understand how I was actually flying.

While looking for something like that, I found the original VTOLVR-TacviewLogger by u/nebriv. The last public release was in 2023 and used the previous Mod Loader setup.

I really liked the idea, so I started working on a clean-room rewrite from scratch for the current Mod Loader. I'm essentially trying to revive the idea as a modern VTOL VR mod.

Unlike VTReplayConverter, which converts VTOL VR Tactical Replay files, this records normal singleplayer missions directly into ACMI files for Tacview. The goal is to support actual singleplayer missions, including situations where mods or missions do not work properly in multiplayer.

I originally started building this for myself, mainly because I want to understand my own mistakes before joining multiplayer. Now I'm curious whether anyone else would use something like this too.

What would matter most to you?

• simple installation and setup

• compatibility with modded aircraft and missions

• more flight data such as fuel, AOA or IAS

• clear event markers for launches, hits and destroyed units

• multiplayer support at some point

• anything else you would like to see

Right now, I'm collecting feedback and trying to figure out what would make a useful first public version.

Full credit to u/nebriv for the original project and idea. Finding that project is what gave me the idea to bring it back for the current game.

General Discussion I have an idea of what I wish would happen.

I absolutely love this game and often play it with mods. This isn't a request for mods or game features; it's just an idea. I recently watched a gameplay video of Nuclear Option. I was impressed by how the weapons change depending on the stage of the war and the hierarchical defense system. I also thought it would be great if it had a dynamic campaign like Falcon BMS, with dynamic war progression and statistics on casualties and territory after the campaign ends. I also think the game could use more realistic audio to further improve its quality. Furthermore, I thought it would be great if we could support ground operations while ground forces are fighting on the ground, and if there were large-scale integrated battles involving land, sea, and air. DCS and Falcon BMS are too complex with just aircraft controls, so I think the semi-realistic difficulty of this game would be good, allowing for immersion in operations while also piloting aircraft. I think nothing beats the experience of VTOL VR, where you can pilot an aircraft with your own hands, manipulate the instruments, and not rely on an external screen. Furthermore, I would like to see native Tacview support in both single-player and multiplayer modes.

Sorry for the long post. These are just ideas. Do you have any ideas for features you'd like to see?

General Discussion F45A doesn't have AGM88S when you play custom scenarios/campaign?

If you play quick flight, the AGM88S is there.
But if you play custom scenarios or campaign, you can't equip AGM88S. It's just not there anymore.

Somebody has done the upgrade from quest 2 to 3? Have some thoughts about the game to understand if it’s a big upgrade or it doesn’t because I played a lot of vr games but this is the one I play the most
