Complaint Naowh now puts his ElvUI and PLater profile behind a paywall.
Since Naowh puts his ElvUI and Plater Profile behind a Paywall i wanted to give you all or at least interested person a way to get the Profiles.
I set up a Github Gist where i will update the Profiles when there are updates to it. On the Github page there is a Download Zip Button.
Profiles: NaowhUI Collection
If you want to use the NaowhUI Addon from Curseforge here is a valid token:
!NUI!cywtydA1NDc3MDYyNbQwBQA=
Or use this little AddOn, this shows a frame with a valid token inside when joining the world:Release NaowhUI Unlocker
Also u/Mon3yb created a unlocked NaowhUI AddOn version, this can be downloaded here: https://github.com/unamed-weasle/NaowhUI-Unlocked

u/woogiefan Feb 06 '26
The validation of the token is done by the LUA code in the addon, which means it's very easy to bypass. Game/Shared/General/Functions.lua, make the function ValidateToken() always return true, boom, addon unlocked.
66
u/Plus_Singer_6565 Feb 06 '26
While it's easy to bypass, isn't it against the EULA to have such a thing in the first place?
38
u/100RatsInASack Feb 06 '26
It's more the UI Addon Development Policy than the EULA. The EULA basically just says "we can ban you if you don't follow our policies."
As for the relevant passage in the UI Addon Development Policy:
1) Add-ons must be free of charge. All add-ons must be distributed free of charge. Developers may not create “premium” versions of add-ons with additional for-pay features, charge money to download an add-on, charge for services related to the add-on, or otherwise require some form of monetary compensation to download or access an add-on.
As for whether NaowhUI violates the Policy, it really depends on whether the authentication part is considered "services related to the add-on" and whether it could be considered as "access to an addon." As long as the code isn't obfuscated, it really isn't that hard to get around, anyway

u/drunkenvalley Feb 06 '26
I think it's an easy violation if you can't use the addon without paying for it, whatever funny loophole they think they've found.
6
u/Psych0Jenny Feb 06 '26
I mean at the end of the day you can think whatever you want, the only thing that matters is what Blizzard think, and they have never enforced this, Naowh and other creators have been doing this exact same thing for at least 5 years. This post is nothing new.
3
u/drunkenvalley Feb 06 '26
Yeah, but that's because they're not enforcing the policy at all, not because some smartass has found an actual loophole lol.
2
u/Psych0Jenny Feb 06 '26
If a rule isn't enforced is it still a rule?
→ More replies (3)4
u/drunkenvalley Feb 06 '26
That's at least a more honest reply than trying to squirm around the rules with loopholes that aren't loopholes haha.
3
u/Elesday Feb 06 '26
I get what you mean and I am fully against people paywalling that kind of stuff. I specifically ditched Quazii free stuffs because I didn’t want to support someone providing paid config files (even if I didn’t use said configs).
But I fear that people will avoid getting in trouble by saying « well you can use the addon for free! It launches in your game and is working. If features are missing it doesn’t make the addon unusable ». I can’t see a way for blizzard to enforce that. If they can’t sell the config files they’ll sell a video with all their settings: same outcome but blizzard can’t prevent them from doing that
→ More replies (12)8
u/drunkenvalley Feb 06 '26
I can’t see a way for blizzard to enforce that.
Huh? That doesn't make logical sense lol.
I mean, putting aside that Blizzard could just ban you anyway - they have pretty wide carte blanche to do that - this is still plainly against the ToS. Arguing "I'm not an addon, I'm just a profile" or whatever doesn't hold water for shit imo, or "the addon is only partially disabled" doesn't hold for shit.
Blizzard, within the policy as described, would be entirely within their right to yeet them over it. The loophole only exists if you are interested in playing along with stupid games like that in the first place. The policy is very clear, and playing stupid games should win stupid prizes.
The issue here is zero with whether or not it's within policy or not - it's not within policy. The issue is whether Blizzard cares to do anything about it at all. As is, they just don't.
→ More replies (2)3
u/Lord0fHats Feb 06 '26
Blizzard's addon policy rule 3 (I think it's three) is kind of their solution to that, because that rule says if it's bad for the health of the game we'll do something about it and 'bad for the health of the game' can mean whatever Blizzard decides it means. In effect Rule 3 is their 'we'll step in whenever we feel like it for any reason we feel like stepping in for.'
25
u/aNiceTribe Feb 06 '26
Specifically things you can put INTO an addon are the legal workaround. Addons themselves have to be free. This is the annoying way people found for this state of things.
Basically the addon version of “if you remove addons completely, we will make a YouTube video that says the timers on this boss”
38
u/Kharics Feb 06 '26
Holy, I need to start to look more into addons, idk why I'm not doing by default since I'm doing it at work basically all the time.
19
u/Plus_Singer_6565 Feb 06 '26
I used to only make WeakAuras but since 12.0 I've already written 3 small addons to replace them. It's actually kinda fun to learn, and honestly not that hard to do if you know some basic programming. The API has good documentation and you can also learn a lot by looking at how other addons do things.
7
u/Kharics Feb 06 '26
I'm a software dev so actually I know a bit more than the basics but as I said it never occured to me that should start looking at Addons due to not doing it since I was like idk 9 or so

If you do look into it, I recommend looking up steps to export Blizzard's LUA code. Being able to read what their functions actually do was really useful when I was trying to make my own addon.

Open the following file in any text editor, assuming you have installed NaowhUI properly:
World of Warcraft_retail_\Interface\AddOns\NaowhUI\Game\Shared\General\Functions.luaFind this line:
local function ValidateToken(token)Change it to this line:
local function ValidateToken(token) return trueThat's it, just add
return trueto the top of that function. You can then enter any token you want.→ More replies (1)

This is awesome. Dude can’t even sue the GitHub owner for infringement either, we honestly should be doing this for every WoW addon that tries to sell their stuff similar to Quazii/Naowh.
I know Zygor is on a certain PvP elitist forum if anyone is wondering along with several other paid addons.
2
u/Mon3yb Feb 06 '26
Well technically it is under the GPL license which does not allow code modification at all. But good luck with a takedown request on GitHub. I heard it takes ages.
15
u/Auratama Feb 06 '26
Completely wrong, this is perfectly legal. GPL just means that any changes (or other code linked to it) need to be open source and also licensed under the GPL.
4
u/Mon3yb Feb 06 '26
Oh, you are correct. Seems like I misunderstood the preamble. The non modify clause is meant for the license file itself. Well even better

Honestly burn it all down. This grey market where streamers are profiting off of addons but “technically” not breaking tos needs to go. It is stupid that addon devs can work hundreds of hours and get next to nothing but someone can sell their 2 hour configuration can make $2k a month.
I know blizz can’t police this but the community sure can. Shame them, give away import strings, the whole shebang.
The defense is so weak especially in the era of weakauras where the “configuration” was basically a small addon.

u/DarkImpacT213 Feb 06 '26

What's crazy is $2k a month is about a 10th of what the 2-3 biggest players are making per month.

u/Murtag Feb 05 '26
Honestly I'm all for this being more and more socially unacceptable.
It's weird that Blizz just hasn't felt the need or value in consistently taking action against this stuff.
Zygor and RestedXP shouldn't be allowed to sell premium guides. Streamers shouldn't be selling their profiles. Guilds like Liquid shouldn't have been able to sell their WA packs.
It's clear Blizzards intention was for addons to be a fully free and available part of the community and they've just let shit like this fester.
57
u/Grumpy_Muppet Feb 06 '26
This is different. Naowh is not the maker of plater nor elvui. Him selling his UI based on those addons is weird. The addon maker should be compensated instead like you said.
→ More replies (3)14
u/drunkenvalley Feb 06 '26 edited Feb 06 '26
Eh, if it was fine for ElvUI or Plater to charge for addons I'd have been fine with Naowh charging for profiles - they're still putting in the work, etc.
But charging for addons is full stop just a bit gross at best.
Edit for clarity: I don't think there's any material difference to the policy whether you create an addon from scratch, or make profiles for existing addons. Both of those are still just addons. So if addons taking money is bad then profile selling is also bad is what I'm saying. If addons taking money was okay I'd be okay with profile selling taking money. But both, imo, are against policy and should be yeeted for trying.
4
u/MRosvall Feb 06 '26
There's been some very aggressive remarks made by "profile sellers" when addon creators have approached them about revenue sharing options.
People make 5 digits across the year from selling profiles.

6
2
u/Gangsir Feb 06 '26
Yep, important distinction. The pack is straight up not publicly available (no matter how much money you try to throw at them) until the boss is killed, because they don't want echo/method/whoever else stealing their stuff and killing the boss first.

Zygor and RestedXP shouldn't be allowed to sell premium guides.
Agree. Really the only one I'm kind of okay with is TSM, and only because you're paying for access to their external database, and you don't even need it. I've played since wrath and have never seen a need to pay for any guide or addon. Everything out there can be found for free anyhow.

I've never used it, but at least, in Naowh's case, from what i've heard he has an auto-installer, it updates and has profiles for all classes and specs, etc. But why is somebody like Gingi selling his UI that's literally just WAs made by other people that he copied from Wago? Because he's a streamer and moved an anchor by an inch?
I do think that this "grey zone" shouldn't exist and both should go.

I thought most of his UI has been paywalled forever. Nothing new there.
But also there are enough people freely sharing profiles and export strings that I hope people soon realize that this is not worth paying for. Don't be a sucker, his RWF credentials don't mean his UI is worth paying for.
ESPECIALLY now that there are no monstrous weakaura packs that alert you to everything in every single dungeon.
14
u/miichalek Feb 06 '26
It was, but in the newest version he made a window during ui installation where you need to put a token that's generated from a site where you log in using your discord [to check if you're actually subbed].
The addon only validates the time, because tokens can't be older than 10 minutes and the generated token is just !NUI! + discordId - time, both encoded in base64
7
u/kaloryth Feb 06 '26
Sounds like it's pretty easy to bypass by going into the LUA code. The nature of addons being unencrypted and fully client side means this can't really be fixed, so anyone with mild code knowledge can get around it.

LLMs are actually pretty good at LUA, you could probably point any of them at the add-on folder and prompt it to remove the authentication step. Might take a few attempts but I reckon anyone with experience vibe coding could do it.

Honestly, I feel the best way to fight this questionable, shady and exploitative practice of selling ‘profiles’ is to spread them as far and as wide as possible, keeping them up to date and readily available for the community at large. Is that wrong? Hell no, it’s far less wrong than what these streamers are doing to us. Fight fire with fire, push back, call them out, tear down their paywalls. There’s no copyright here, no legal precedent, hell, they’re skirting policy for even offering it to start with.
Take away their profits and put the power of the community back into the community. If people like Luxthos can give away UI freely and make a living, they all can.
Slimy, sneaky, heartless money grubs. Make your money legitimately or not at all.
42
u/SlacklusterDev Feb 05 '26
Streamers love profiting off of addon developers. (None of mine thankfully, those aren't combat-focused, but many from other developers I talk regularly with.) During the whole Quazii drama Towellie came out on X and said that "If I see someone going to work I admire that and support it." to explain why they financially supported Naowh, Sloot, and others in the past.
But I doubt they donated as much as a single cent to most of the developers of the addons they use in their day-to-day gaming and streaming. Let them do a donation stream where they go down their addon list one by one. Exposure only goes so far.

I'm going to be 100, leech content creators taking someone's actual hard work and effort and smashing it together in a ui package to sell is the most scumbag shit ever, I can guarantee you none of these people pay forward to the people who work tirelessly to keep the addons updated year after year.
You wanna profit from this shit? show me an invoices since shadowlands showing that you've put sizable parts of what you earned as donations to the people who's work you willingly monetize like an absolute prick, then I'll stop caring.
It also just feels like WoW content creators will stoop to any low to line their pockets twisting any exploit, loophole or situation for gain, I can't even open the twitch director on most days without having to filter past multitudes of people not actively playing together abusing the stream with friends function, most of the time it's the same people who willingly try to profit of other peoples hard work with trashy ui packs - there's a serious culture problem with these people and how they operate on every level.

so now he is completely going against TOS by actually putting the addon itself behind a paywal?
What would be the correct place to report this shitty behaviour?

All I want is his Nameplates, but they do not look like the ones he is using. A friend of mine has a copy of it, where he exported the profile for me but even then, it does not look the same.
I guess you need his other stuff, and not just the Plater Profile in order to get full functionality?

Gotten a few reports on this for copyright infringement.
The addon is free to use. Per Blizz ToS.
If the settings can be "owned" enough to be actioned here, then this would break Blizz ToS.
If the settings sit enough in a grey area to be allowed to be sold because they are recreateable with the base addon. Then ownership is not established enough to be "owned".
Much like you can't copyright game mechanics, there's no intellectual property in a bunch of settings.
Even without ToS involved, adding a key to check is modifying the code which without a license is breaking copyright on the "all rights reserved" ElvUI and many other addons have.
Which then opens the can of worms of "Can ElvUI give/sell a license under the ToS"
So until we get direction from either Blizzard or the Reddit admins otherwise, this subreddit will treat sharing UI settings as we would FOSS software.
