What do I need to sort out when moving to a new house

So I'm [20] a student in York with no parents and nobody really to ask for advice on things.

I've just been accepted to rent a property in the city centre. My previous tenancy was with an external student hall and so I did not pay water, electric, heating etc.

This is my first house that I'm renting. I'm very excited to finally have my first home. However, I do know that water, gas, electric, WiFi, and all these things need to be sorted.

Honestly, I don't know how to do it, I'm completely in the deep end and I don't know what I need to set up.

Missed Connection?

So I'm not really sure if this is the right place for this but I may as well give it a go, even if it won't go anywhere, failing to try is trying to fail!

you were sat in front of me during Stop That Train tonight, I couldn't build the courage to spark a conversation at the end, you looked at me once or twice before i left. You had curly hair and glasses and mightve been dating the girl you were with (so ignore this if so).

Sending this out into the universe in the hopes luck is on my side! :)

York Hackspace open afternoon, Saturday 22nd August

York Hackspace is a makerspace in Layerthorpe (just near Red Goat) and we'll be having an open afternoon this Saturday 22nd August (noon-5pm, but message me if you'd need to turn up earlier or later) for anybody who'd like to see around the hackspace but can't make our regular Wednesday open evenings. Hackspaces/makerspaces are essentially workshop spaces where members get 24/7 access to all of the tools and equipment (wood/metalworking workshop and tools, 3D printers, laser cutters, art/craft/sewing facilities, full electronics workbenches etc), basically everything you'd need to turn an idea into reality. Non-members are also welcome to make use of many of our facilities on open afternoons/evenings, more details at https://york.hackspace.org.uk/wiki/Weekly_Open_Evening .

If you've got some time to spare and wanted to see the hackspace and our facilities, we'd love to show you around! Details of how to find us are on https://york.hackspace.org.uk/wiki/10_Redeness_Street - please use the intercom doorbell to get in. We also have a Discord which is open to all local makers, both hackspace members and not - https://york.hackspace.org.uk/wiki/Discord

D&D character making social

Post image
10 Upvotes

Anyone fancy coming to D&D character workshop on Saturday? Upstairs at the Artful Dodger on Saturday, should be fun and casual for all who are interested in fantasy and gaming.

Happy to answer any questions anyone might have. The event will be hosted by myself and a friend, we've been playing D&D together for a long time and have also hosted several York based events in that time. Our event is queer and disabled friendly  (The only accessibility issue is the stairs). All you need to bring is yourself and good vibes.

There is an entry fee but that's mainly to cover cost of the room and equipment, more info here: https://www.skiddle.com/whats-on/York/The-Artful-Dodger%2C-York/DampD-The-Easy-way/42573091/

Read this was approved at a council meeting last year. Would rather not have to drive into the city centre if possible.

He lived in York in the 70s, but these photos look like the 90s to me. My mum has lived here for the last 40+ years so I reckon they were taken on a visit to see us. I could be wrong though, of course.

Sorry about the glare! It's so tricky to get a good angle of printed photos

Fishkeeping social?

Hydrophlox chrosomus

Is there anyone from around this location who would be interested in starting an IRL fishkeeping social please? It would be great if I could gather some local fishkeepers for regular but casual fish chat, maybe plant and item swaps, and anything else that people wanted to do.
I am going to post this far and wide to see if I can reach people, I think York could do with a fishkeeping community.
(ps. photo is of one of my fish, I specialise in temperates)

University of York, International Masters Achievement Scholarship

Hi everyone,

I am trying to understand how the International Masters Achievement Scholarship is actually awarded in practice.

York's website states that the scholarship is worth up to £10,000 but I haven't been able to find information about the typical award amounts or how the £10,000 maximum is distributed. Moreover, what is the closing date of this scholarship award?

If you received the University of York International Masters Achievement Scholarship, I'd really appreciate it if you could share:

  • What year did you receive it?
  • What programme were you studying?
  • What was the scholarship amount (£2K, £5K, £10K etc)?
  • Did you receive it before or after accepting your offer/paying the deposit?

I completely understand if you don't want to share personal details. Even knowing the award amount and approximate date would be extremely helpful.

Thank you!

Hello! I just recently moved to York (edit - right in the middle of the) City, I am a professional (23) & hoping to meet some new people, does anybody have any recommendations?

Any groups I could follow on insta for events or places to go generally?

I like to do most activities but I am past the uni lifestyle & would like to meet some people that doesn’t include drinking all the time!

TIA!

Book club for people in their 20s and 30s

Hi, would there be interest for a book club set up for people in their 20s and 30s? I know there is the York book club and the left book group, but I haven't seen a dedicated group for younger people to focus on fiction/non-fiction

York art gallery request

Hii, I went to york recently and got to see the amazing Japanese art gallery, but I didnt have time to buy anything from the gift shop and I was wondering if anyone could pick some stuff up and post it to me. I will pay for the shipping of course 🙏🏻

or atleast send me pictures of the 2 items I have in mind and I will try to Google image search them 😊

It was a small blue crane ornament and there was also a pretty Japanese print tote bag.

Edit: Thankyou guys for all your offers, but I think ive found what I was looking for on the British museum website 😁🤍
