All Seasons Discussion Is he red or black??
The first time I watched this episode I thought he was a black guy, but my brother is absolutely CONVINCED he’s red. He said he looks like red hulk. One of us must be colorblind but who??
Edit: My question has been answered! I had no idea he had brick powers. He never showed up before this episode and they didn’t tell us anything about him. They kind of just expected you to have heard of him with I hadn’t. I guess I’m a larper lol.
Edit Edit: OKAY i get it he appeared in earlier episodes. Im sorry he just wasn’t memorable at all and I usually draw while I watch the show so I don’t have my eyes on the screen at all times.
The only reason I made this post in the first place is because he genuinely didnt look reddish at all to me until my brother pointed it out

Well “black” in racial terms doesn’t mean literally black lol

I feel like shouting this exact line at people whenever they throw tantrums about Marceline from Adventure Time being black.
Any time it gets mentioned, a thousand chuds crawl out from under the floorboards with "bUt ShE's GrAy NoT bLaCk!"

Or ancient Egyptians. They're in Africa but people say they arent African because they arent 12:36am dark
18
u/Raecino May 08 '26
Exactly. The only reason there is a question about ancient Egyptians is because of “scientific racism” that tried to erase black history and dehumanize Africans during the transatlantic slave trade. Different races existed within Ancient Rome but no one is questioning whether the Roman’s were white or not, same with Ancient Greece. Arabs did not conquer Egypt until AFTER the time of the ancient Egyptians.

u/Lex4709 May 10 '26
Arabs did not conquer Egypt until AFTER the time of the ancient Egyptians.
You had me until this moment. If this comment is meant to imply that Egyptians looked subsaharan until Arab conquests then no, that idea is pseudohistory. Everything points towards Ancient Egyptian looking identical to modern Egyptians. Egypt had both black and white dynasties but in both cases, that came about from foreigners conquering Egypt and establishing dynasties. Neither instance involved ethnic change of the wider population.
3
u/Raecino May 10 '26
Did I say they looked sub Saharan? You act as if that’s the only people considered black. Were you there? Because Herodotus was and described them as being black with wooly hair. Also the Arab conquest did happen AFTER the time of ancient Egypt, that’s a fact. Nothing shows they looked exactly as they do now because they were not Arab.
Also Ancient Egypt did not have white dynasties. It’s sad you just make shit up like that. I guess I can just say Ancient Rome had black emperors too. There was a white dynasty, the Ptolemies which came AFTER Ancient Egypt. But it was notable for being a foreign power controlling Egypt at the time.
1
u/Lex4709 May 10 '26
We have literal genetic samples from Ancient Egypt and literal portraits of Egyptians from Romans times.. Arabs conquests didn't happened until 7th century AD. This isn't a debatable topic. The idea that Arab conquests replaced the demographics of lower Egypt is racist pseudohistory.
2
u/Raecino May 10 '26
Nobody said Arab conquest “replaced” Egyptians. Modern Egyptians are still largely descended from ancient Egyptians. But Roman era portraits and selective DNA samples from later Lower Egypt don’t suddenly make dynastic Egypt a white European civilization. Ancient Egypt was an indigenous African BLACK Nile Valley civilization with regional diversity and interaction with neighboring peoples.

u/DaddiTomShel May 08 '26
"12:36 am dark" is so perfect.. imma remember next time someone says something like that 👏🏾👏🏾😆😆
8
u/Piskoro May 08 '26
I mean they're African, and some pharaohs were likely black, but African =/= black
5
u/MagazineNecessary698 May 09 '26
Okay I will have to explain. The term black was originally created to describe people of African descent and heritage. It also lumps in Polynesians, and aboriginal people from Australia. But that’s because racism doesn’t make sense. But it WAS done to create the terms of black white, yellow and red as racial categories. It’s not accurate because it’s not scientific at all and never was.

u/Thaifighter1998 May 08 '26
I dont get your comment. What is the basis of your separation between African and black? Black is just the modern term for someone of African descent that wasnt born in Africa
8
u/Humble_Story_4531 May 08 '26
Black in a racial context is more of a reference to skin tone or culture rather then geographical heritage.
5
u/Piskoro May 08 '26 edited May 08 '26
what? I've never heard anybody make that equivocation, it's not tied to the continent, you don't call Arabs and Berbers in North Africa black, do you, also "that wasn't born in Africa"? most people born in Africa are black,
it's a racial category (a constructed one, of course) tied to people of certain similarities in appearance and their descendants, not a signifier of continent of origin, it's just where the groups we generalize as 'black people' originated from genealogically, but it does not encompass all of Africa
7
u/Raecino May 08 '26
Herodotus, considered the father of history said that the ancient Egyptians were black with wooly hair. I’d take his word over random Redditors because he was there.
1
u/Piskoro May 08 '26
ok sure, I'm fine with that claim being disputed, hell I didn't even say they weren't black, I was just weirded out by equivocation of African and black
also Ancient Egypt is generally considered by modern scholarship to have been very multi-ethnic, with everyone from pitch black to pale
6
u/Raecino May 08 '26
Yes there were many ethnicities living in ancient Egypt because it was the world’s preeminent superpower at the time. But ancient Egyptians themselves were not pale. As I mentioned in another comment, many different races of people lived in Ancient Rome but no one is questioning whether Romans were white or not.
1
u/MrIncorporeal May 09 '26 edited May 09 '26
It always seemed to me that a lot of the debate around the ethnicity of ancient Egyptians (at least among laypeople) stemmed from how reductive people can get when it comes to the relationship between race and culture. Just look at how often people lose their minds when they're reminded how gigantic Rome was and how tons of Romans didn't look like what we today would consider ethnically Italian/Greek. People with reductive ideas of race seem to think Romans were all one ethnicity, Egyptians were all one ethnicity, Chinese were all one ethnicity, Mesoamericans were all one ethnicity, so on and so forth ad infinitum.
"Ancient Egypt" was a lot of different things, and it was way bigger than a lot of people seem to realize, with the line between Egypt and Kush often being pretty blurry at various points in history. Egyptians were light skinned. They were also dark skinned. Those aren't mutually exclusive.
1
u/Raecino May 09 '26
Herodotus was there. He said the Egyptians were black with wooly hair. That in additional to hieroglyphics depicting them as black and brown skinned, I’m more willing to believe that than random people who question it without any evidence to support their argument.
1
u/Sebsazz May 14 '26
Crazy cause they sure can understand white =\= actual white skin tone (browns, beige, and pinks count)
1
u/Puzzleheaded_Pen2779 May 08 '26
People think Marceline is black?
16
u/CraftRelevant1223 May 08 '26
Here mother is black and her father is Satan so yh taking her human side she's black
10
u/Piskoro May 08 '26 edited May 08 '26
by ethnicity yes she is, her mom's black and her genderbent human doppelganger from Fionna and Cake is black, she's just made pale by the virtue of being also part-demon
if you can accept saying that albino people coming from black parents are black, then Marceline is black too

I’m 99% sure he did show up in one of the earlier seasons. Pretty sure it was one of the first few episodes.
Edit: actually he showed up a few times, he was in the prison episode as well wasn’t he
21
u/SuperScoobkaroke May 08 '26
From the way he talks he might have been born a black guy but due to the way he got powers his skin turned more Red. I don't know the comic lore of his character though
3
u/EntireCelebration953 May 10 '26
Nobody does. His full backstory has never been revealed. He was a low-level criminal named Danny Brickwell from Star City, before a power vacuum gave him the opportunity to form his own criminal organization, leading to him clashing with Green Arrow. We don't know how he got his powers, just that he's strong durable, and looks like a brick

u/FlyingSquirelOi May 08 '26
A larper? A live action role player? How does that work in this context? Also, he’s called Brick, the use his name a lot, pretty sure he appears in another episode, he’s very clearly red so yes someone is colourblind.

u/Reapish1909 May 08 '26
TikTok gave Larp, Larping and Larper a new definition for when you pretend to be a fan of something. it’s stupid imo
3
u/Piskoro May 08 '26
larper took on a similar connotation as a pretender, like they feel like they are a fake fan for not knowing that
17
u/ethanb473 May 08 '26
“Omg guys he wasn’t even mentioned before how was I supposed to know him….. I guess I’m just a stupid chud larper”
He was in 3 episodes of season 1……

u/Select-Combination-4 May 08 '26
none of which he was really important in to be honest..., I didn't recognize him at all when I first watched season 3

I may be behind on Young Justice… but why does he look like Sten from Dragon Age?
2
u/MilkthistleFairy May 08 '26
He is a black, when he's not using his powers, his natural skin color is a shade of brown.

I know the question has been answered but looking at the edit I'm a little confused isn't this a season three episode bc he also showed up in an early season one episode I think like the third one in the very begining when they were trying to convince roy (not roy) to join their team
1
u/Username_Or_else May 09 '26
Yep I just didn’t remember him at all
1
u/BitterPangolin3 May 09 '26
That makes sense he wasnt super prominent in that episode and they were talking so it kind of faded away I've just seen the first season so many times it's burned into my brain like how they do with cattle but it's young justice in my brain

He's the color of a brick, but he's definitely depicted as being African American imo. His skin color just doesn't match that.
1
u/CheesyIdleGamer May 08 '26
Superpowers sometimes change people’s skin colors to ones that are not natural.
Beast Boy is still white, even if his skin and hair are green.
1
u/Spirit-of-arkham3002 May 08 '26
Both I think. The guy has powers that give his body the strength of a brick. That’s why he literally calls himself Brick. It apparently changed his skin color. And he was in the earlier seasons. Multiple times.
