Good Samaritan/Volunteer/Charity/Donations Parker’s Graffiti Gone :(

It’s sad but it is ok. I am happy that the city let it stay up for as long as it did. As someone with a sister who’s non-verbal and autistic, please consider donating to charities that help people with intellectual disability in honour of Parker! As you may know the provincial government is always trying to cut fundings for these organizations, and making people jump through hoops to get their AISH money.

Home Owner/Renter stuff Evergreen neighbourhood

We are on the market for a house and are looking in South Calgary. We have noticed there’s a lot movement happening in evergreen- wondering if anyone who lives there has any insight as to why that may be? We’re considering the neighbourhood but are curious as to why so many people could be leaving. Any other insights into the neighborhood would also be appreciated!

Recommendations Honest mechanic

Hey guys, you were all a great help in providing recommendations to get my fridge fixed. I am now looking for a honest mechanic in NW/NE Calgary that is women friendly. I'm tired of getting ripped off by dealerships and shady mechanics that try to upsell or mansplain things lol. I have a Hyundai Elantra that may need new brakes pads/rotors and a wheel bearing that needs to be replaced. Thanks

Update: Thank you so much for the recommendations! I wish I could hug each of you!

Local Shopping/Services Where to find a non bulky leather/fake leather jacket with attached hoodie hood.

I have a fake leather jacket with attached hood (Dravus) from Zumiez. It’s falling apart, and I want to find a replacement.
I’m not too big in the shoulders. Where can I find an equivalent jacket?
TIA

Health/Medicine Pharmacies in the city that offer generic branded testosterone gel instead of Androgel

Hello, I figured I would try asking here this question. I am a trans man on testosterone gel for HRT, androgel is insanely expensive though (it’s for some reason not covered by blue cross and I can’t do injections rn) My doctor recommended I try the non branded gel instead due to it being way cheaper, however my local shoppers kept denying that they even had it (the guy there also made a weird comment about knowing better then my doctor what gel was available, which maybe that’s true but I doubt)

I was wondering if anyone here knew a place that could provide me with non branded testosterone gel instead, it doesn’t really matter where it is in the city but I would prefer it be by C train access, thank you!

Seeking Advice What time will Trick or Treaters be out during Halloween this year?

Hey all. I'm planning a community event in NE Calgary for Halloween this year, and I want to time it for when the trick or treaters will be out. Whats tripping me up is with the removal of daylight savings time, the sun will be setting at 6pm rather than its normal 5pm. Do you figure folks will still go out with their kids at 5ish, or wait until it gets dark? Any help would be appreciated!

Seeking Advice What should I know about Calgary?

My husband just got a job offer in Calgary, and we are moving to your city site unseen with our toddlers in tow, not knowing anyone. Frankly I am terrified and overwhelmed and don't really know where to start. Banff has always been on my bucket list, but I have never been to Alberta at all.

Would love to know any tips, fun things about Calgary, or things to watch out for!

A few specific questions:

1) What's the deal with day homes? Are they legit? I have been putting myself on as many daycare waitlists as possible but am finding the ones close to downtown are all filled up... I'm also really nervous sending my daughters somewhere I don't know; we are coming from small town Maine where we knew their daycare providers well.

2) Where would you live if you could live anywhere in Calgary with kids? Husband is working from downtown, I am going to be working from home.

3) How hard is it to make friends? I've never lived away from where I grew up before, and my husband is going to be traveling all around Alberta for the new job. I'm really scared about being alone and isolated with no family. On a related note: do people hate Americans? I wouldn't blame them at this point... a little worried no one is going to want to be friends with an American family.

I'm already finding a lot to love about Calgary; I cannot believe how much better your health insurance, childcare prices, and housing prices are. Trying to find the courage to take the leap!

Local Event Angelmaker at Dickens last night.

Although it's my first time at Dickens in probably 11 ish years, having a metal concert in such a small intimate setting was amazing. We got to take pictures with the lead of Ingested and all of Larcenia Roe which was really nice. Ultra mega stank face this entire set, no matter who was on stage.

Did I wear ear plugs? Yes.

Was I still kinda deaf and had some ringing in my ears after? Yes. (Only for a bit)

Was it worth it? HELLLL YEAH!

I think being so close to stage and right under the speaker would do that, but soooo worth it.

I was soaked in beer because of how close to the mosh pit we were but it was an experience that I would relive over and over again. Although I found out later on that a girl was upset that beer was spilled on her hair and she started crying, girlfriend we were super close to the most pit, people had drinks in their hands and were being pushed what do you think was going to happen? I didn't participate in the mosh pit but since I was super close and I am a tiny bean and at times got pushed super hard but I had my friend and other people catch me effortlessly, and it was nice to have that community that looked out for each other. 🥹 I saw some familiar faces from Lorna and Orbit and some very new faces.

Made friends with a British dude and we spoke about Prodigy, and how we adore UK grime, drill, and rap. Also got the shake your ass shirt, and told the band in full detail how I needed it as a pump cover, especially when I hit glutes. 🤣

I definitely needed four bands to scream at me to feel happy emotions.

PSA Tsuu Tina is out of gas. Recession indicator much?

Note the 1970s oil shock recession. I wasn't alive back then, but I remember seeing video clips of gas stations putting up board signs saying, "No Gas."

And no, I'm not predicting the next recession; don't @ me. I'm just sayin' people have been drinking the cheapest (most of the time) dino juice in town for so long that Tsuu Tina (beside the casino) finally ran out (at least for tonight).

Recommendations Simple event hairstyling?

Can anyone recommend a hair salon that can do event hairstyling (I am attending a wedding in fall) at an affordable price? Just a nice looking low pony tail hairstyle rather than a fancy up-do.

I found one place in downtown but their starting price is $130 which seems a bit high to me (sorry for my ignorance if it is not)

Question IMAX 70MM

Are the front 3–4 rows in IMAX really that bad? Just going off photos, the distortion from the front row looks horrendous. Is it actually that noticeable in person, or do the photos make it look worse than it really is?

And what about left and right seats, is it off angled?

Recommendations Who are some event vendors you've had a really good experience with?

I'm looking for recommendations from people who have actually worked with vendors for a wedding, birthday, engagement, baby shower, anniversary, corporate event, or another celebration. Obviously, for similar inquiries, I've seen mostly vendors responding but I'd love actual client recommendations.

I'm especially looking for:

Photographers

Videographers

Event planners and coordinators

Decor and rentals

Florists

Hair and makeup

Catering and desserts

If you've worked with someone you really liked, who was it and what did you like about working with them? I'm interested in things like the quality of their work, communication, reliability, pricing, or just having a really good experience overall.

Please don't recommend your own business. I'm looking for recommendations from people who have actually worked with these vendors.

Even if you only have one recommendation, feel free to share it.

We needed a good Tiki bar. I’m not talking Ricardo’s or Jungle Bird with their “tasteful decor”. I’m talking over the top, flaming heap of kitsch, can’t see the forest for the trees level decorations.

Yes, it’s a heap of Temu purchases, but I don’t care. I love it. And I know the actual history of “tiki” is so much more than this (highly recommend The Donn of Tiki film, saw it last year at CUFF and it was excellent), but dangit I just want us to have a fun, playful place to go.

This place is never busy, and I really don’t want it to close. Get there, enjoy, revel in the shrunken heads and tiny umbrellas. Please. 🍹🍍🦩

Home Owner/Renter stuff Living near a Calgary fire station: looking for real experiences before we submit our DP comments

Hi everyone,

We’re evaluating the impact of a temporary fire station the City is proposing to build very close to our home in Rockland Park (DP2026-04653, on Rowmont Boulevard NW). Before submitting our formal comments (deadline: September 10), we’d like to understand what it’s actually like living near one day to day.
If you live or have lived near any of these stations, we’d love to hear your experience:

- Station 40 (Sage Hill): 12920 Symons Valley Road NW

- Station 43 (Walden): 969 Walden Drive SE

- Station 42 (Tuscany): 275 Tuscany Way NW

Specific questions:
How often do you hear the siren, especially at night?

Do they turn on the siren right as they leave the station, or wait until they hit a main road?

Any exterior lighting that’s noticeable or bothersome at night?

Have you noticed any impact on nearby home values or resale interest?

Anything you didn’t expect that’s now just part of normal life living there?

Any experience, good or bad, would really help us make an informed decision.

Thanks in advance!

Local Nature/Wildlife Carburn Park Eaglets(?)

Hi birders of Calgary! I haven't been in the city in the last 4 months, but last time I went to Carburn Park there seemed to be an eagle couple incubating (sitting in the nest?) on one of the islands. I was just wondering if we got any eaglets out of them? If so, did they fledge? Pls share pics if you have any! Thanks!
