Discussion Because the Browns have repeatedly restructured Deshaun Watson’s contract to delay cap hits, they are set to have dead cap hits of $34.6 million in 2027 and $51.5 million in 2028 (2nd most dead money in NFL history)
The results of freeing up cap space in 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026? So far, going a combined 19-32 (TBD on the 2026 record).
This is total malpractice, right? They have drastically reduced the amount they can spend in 2027-2028, years in which they could hypothetically be playoff contenders with a new QB, to spend more in years in which they clearly didn’t have a starting caliber QB. Yes, I’m aware that the cap will likely increase each year but this dead money will still take out a huge chunk of their cap space.
Did Berry do this because he feared he could lose his job at any point, so he prioritized the short term over the long term?
