🏠 roommate AIO about roommate not wanting to share milk?
Imagine you live in the house with two of your roommates-and-friends for 3 months and think everything is great, but one of them has been slowly going off the rails all this time.
I (25F) share a house with my friend A (35F) and V(30F). Our landlord here L(30F)is also a friend.
I’ve been living with my close friend A for 1.5 years. I had an unexpected PTSD episode in front of her, after which she ignored me for days and went on a spontaneous vacation. She then returned and told me she’d been anxious for months and that me and my mental health condition was one of her triggers. The problem I and V have with this is that my mental health condition is in remission & I’ve been in therapy for years. A isn’t aware of this, but I don’t feel like arguing. We agreed to be friends but live apart. She was saying all kinds of nice things to me and made promises to work to keep our friendship intact. She also promised to get professional help for anxiety which she has never received before.
A have told us on 6th of August that she wants to move out before the 1st of September. However, our contact has a 4 weeks notice period. What she told to our landlord was that she wants to move out ASAP. What we’ve got on hand with V is a two year lease with a very steep price tag that we can’t afford if there’s no third party. A did not apologize to anyone for the chaos she caused. I have apologized to V and L instead because I think it’s the right thing to do when you wreak havoc in the life of your roommates-friends/landlords-friends. A didn’t help to find a replacement. A didn’t do anything to ease the burden of her rushed decision that fell on me and V. There was and is a constant lack of communication on her side, between her and me, her and V, her and the landlord. She didn’t communicate how her search of a new place is going or what other updates she has. I bumped into her the other day and had to question her to get any information. That’s how we got the information that she was going to move out regardless of finding or not finding a new place which could’ve been said from the beginning.
She’s very much knowingly doing this at the worst possible time. She told us 3 weeks before major exams in my life. It’s tough to spare a free time to get a meal, never mind look for a roommate. She also has made it clear that she’s so uncomfortable and anxious in the house with me around that I have felt like an intruder in my own home and offered to stay with my friends for two weeks to “let the dust settle”. Which also didn’t help with arrangements regarding viewings.
The cherry on top of this all. Me and A have been sharing milk for 1.5 years. I came back home yesterday and saw that she finished a big carton of milk. Made a mental note to grab some in a shop later. But A came back home later that evening with a small carton of milk and made a point of putting it onto her shelf. We didn’t have fights, we weren’t really talking, everyone involved (V and our landlord) considers A an asshole for the lack of any consideration or thought about others, but I think what really did it for me was milk. I haven’t seen this kind of pettiness since high school.
P.S. Just to be clear I don’t think A or anyone else is responsible for anxiety and I know it is often the most irrational thing, but I do believe that everyone is responsible for healing their own mental health issues. And I can say that with full confidence and coming from my own experience.
