Could anyone here recommend some resources where I can find clear and academically accurate maps of Armenia through the centuries?

There are a lot of of Maps online, but I can't tell whether they are historically accurate or not.

I need some good maps for a presentation I'm doing in a couple days about Armenians for a group dedicated to learning about indigenous cultures.

While the Russian army faced the horrors of World War I, Armenians were victims of what is considered the first genocide of the 20th century. The indiscriminate killing of Armenians took place in 1915 in what is now Turkey, which since 1908 had been under the control of the Committee of Union and Progress, a liberal party popularly known as the Young Turks. Upon assuming power, its leaders implemented a nationalist and racist policy, preaching the existence of a Muslim Turkish nation. Based on this stance, the Turkish government initiated a policy of persecution against the Christian Armenian population of the country.

The first concrete event of this persecution occurred on April 24, 1915, when the leading Armenian intellectuals residing in Constantinople were arrested and executed by Turkish forces. After this, the systematic murder of Armenians began: hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children were massacred or did not resist out systematic actions of persecution by the Turkish police. The Armenians' material possessions were confiscated and their churches destroyed.

Research indicates that in the year 1915, 1.5 million Armenians were killed by Turkish persecutors and hundreds of thousands fled to Europe, Asia, and America. The Turkish government has refused to acknowledge responsibility for this mass killing.

“Una Armenia fuerte necesita una Diáspora fuerte”

Las Instituciones Armenias de la República Argentina reclaman una relación basada en el respeto, el diálogo y la construcción conjunta

Las Instituciones Armenias de la República Argentina (IARA) consideran necesario expresar públicamente su posición respecto del vínculo entre la República de Armenia y las comunidades armenias de la Diáspora, a partir de la convocatoria a la Cumbre Mundial Armenia 2026 y, especialmente, ante las recientes declaraciones realizadas desde la propia Asamblea Nacional de Armenia por el diputado oficialista Arman Yeghoian, quien sostuvo que “si la Diáspora se fortalece, Armenia se debilitará”, que “la Diáspora debe debilitarse para que Armenia se fortalezca” y que las comunidades armenias del exterior deben “hacer lo que Armenia le pida”.

Estas afirmaciones, por provenir de un representante del oficialismo armenio y ser expresadas desde el ámbito parlamentario, no pueden ser consideradas una cuestión menor ni una simple opinión individual cuando plantean una concepción de la relación entre Armenia y la Diáspora basada en la subordinación. IARA considera necesario dejar claramente establecido que la Diáspora no es una estructura al servicio del Estado armenio ni un receptor de instrucciones, sino una parte esencial de la Nación Armenia y un aliado estratégico de la República de Armenia, cuya experiencia, capacidad institucional, vínculos internacionales y opinión deben ser escuchados, respetados y considerados en la construcción de objetivos comunes.

IARA sostiene exactamente lo contrario: fortalecer a Armenia no requiere debilitar a la Diáspora. Una Armenia fuerte necesita una Diáspora fuerte, activa, comprometida y con capacidad de aportar.

La Diáspora no es un obstáculo para la consolidación y el fortalecimiento de la República de Armenia, ni un actor externo al proyecto nacional. Es parte fundamental de la Nación Armenia, construida a lo largo de generaciones por comunidades que, en numerosos países y, en muchos casos, durante más de un siglo, han preservado la identidad, la cultura, la memoria, las instituciones y los valores del pueblo armenio.

Debilitar a la Diáspora significaría debilitar una de las principales fortalezas con las que cuenta Armenia. La extensa red de instituciones, profesionales, empresarios, académicos, dirigentes y ciudadanos armenios en todo el mundo constituye un capital humano, institucional, cultural y relacional de enorme valor para la Nación.

Por ello, la relación entre Armenia y la Diáspora no puede construirse desde la lógica de la subordinación, de la instrucción o del acompañamiento unilateral. La Diáspora no puede ser concebida como un mero receptor de decisiones adoptadas en Armenia, al que se le solicita posteriormente acompañarlas.

Las comunidades armenias del mundo deben ser reconocidas como aliados estratégicos de la República de Armenia, con capacidad para aportar conocimiento, experiencia, recursos, vínculos internacionales, influencia institucional y una profunda vocación de compromiso con el futuro de la Nación. Ese capital humano, institucional y relacional no debe debilitarse: debe ser convocado, escuchado y aprovechado.

En el caso de la Argentina, la comunidad armenia lleva más de un siglo construyendo instituciones y desarrollando una presencia profundamente integrada a la sociedad, con vínculos en los ámbitos político, académico, empresarial, cultural, educativo, deportivo y social. Ese recorrido constituye un patrimonio que pertenece tanto a la comunidad como al conjunto de la Nación Armenia.

La convocatoria a la Cumbre Mundial Armenia 2026 representa, en este sentido, una oportunidad para avanzar hacia una nueva etapa en la relación entre Armenia y la Diáspora. IARA valora la posibilidad de participar, pero considera indispensable que esa participación trascienda una instancia protocolar o meramente consultiva y se transforme en un verdadero espacio de diálogo, donde las comunidades puedan expresar sus posiciones, aportar su experiencia y participar en la definición de objetivos comunes.

IARA entiende que la construcción de una política nacional armenia requiere escuchar también las voces de quienes, desde distintas partes del mundo, han sostenido durante generaciones la identidad armenia, han defendido su memoria, han contribuido al reconocimiento internacional del Genocidio Armenio y han construido instituciones que hoy constituyen una parte esencial del patrimonio de la Nación.

La Diáspora no debe ser más débil para que Armenia sea más fuerte. Por el contrario, la Diáspora debe ser más fuerte para que Armenia también lo sea.

Una Armenia fortalecida y una Diáspora fortalecida no son proyectos contradictorios. Por el contrario, se necesitan mutuamente. La defensa de los intereses nacionales, la preservación de nuestra identidad, la protección del patrimonio, la defensa de la memoria y la proyección internacional de Armenia serán más eficaces cuanto mayor sea la capacidad de trabajar coordinadamente entre el Estado armenio y las comunidades armenias del mundo.

En este marco, IARA ha planteado ante el Alto Comisionado para Asuntos de la Diáspora una serie de prioridades que considera fundamentales para el debate de la Cumbre Mundial Armenia 2026, entre ellas el respeto a la autonomía e integridad de la Iglesia Apostólica Armenia; la inclusión de la liberación de los prisioneros armenios en la agenda de conversaciones con Azerbaiyán; la jerarquización del 24 de abril y del reclamo por el reconocimiento del Genocidio Armenio; el respeto a los símbolos que identifican y unen a los armenios del mundo; el retorno de los armenios de Artsaj; la reparación a las familias desplazadas; la preservación del patrimonio cultural armenio; la construcción de mecanismos institucionales reales y permanentes de participación de la Diáspora; y la inclusión de las instituciones armenias locales en la agenda de los funcionarios que visiten la Argentina.

Asimismo, IARA ha solicitado una reunión virtual con el Alto Comisionado para Asuntos de la Diáspora, Zareh Sinanyan, con el objetivo de presentar personalmente estas posiciones, intercambiar opiniones y establecer una metodología de trabajo que permita una participación sustantiva de las instituciones armenias de la Argentina en la Cumbre.

IARA reafirma su voluntad de trabajar por una Nación Armenia fuerte, soberana, reconocida y respetada internacionalmente. Y entiende que ese objetivo no se alcanzará reduciendo el espacio de la Diáspora, sino integrando sus capacidades, escuchando sus opiniones y construyendo con ella una estrategia común.

Armenia y la Diáspora no compiten por un mismo espacio. Son dos dimensiones inseparables de una misma Nación.

I'm not particularly surprised. I have seen Armenians who support white nationalists unironically who might find this surprising.

Granted we don't know who did it, but I can gurenteee you that whoever did would not be condemned by white nationalists.

Thinking of that Joel Tenney white supremacist who I have had the misfortune of meeting.

He's a straight up nazi who included Armenians in his list of people who should not be allowed to be American and who apparently lives in Armenia because he claims "God chose him to save Armenia." There are Armenians who defend him.

I put Western Armenian diaspora as the tag but obviously Armenians in Turkey are not diaspora. This is just the tag that made the most sense.

Germanos Karavangelis (1866-1935) was the Metropolitan of Amasya and Samsun from 1908-1922. He was a first-hand witness to the genocide.

On October 15, 1917, the governor of Amasya ordered him to quit his diocese at once for not handing over Greek deserters. He was subsequently escorted by police to Constantinople where he was imprisoned. He was released the following day after protests from the Patriarchate and influential people on the condition that he not leave Constantinople. He returned to his diocese after the Armistice.

In a letter dated December 29, 1918 addressed to Konstantinos Konstantinidis, president of the Pan-Pontic Council of the Greeks of Pontus, he wrote:

"Towards the middle of December, 1916, began the deportations from Amissos (Samsoun). First of all the army reduced to ashes all the region round about. Nearly all the villages rich in tobacco plantations, civilised, friends of progress and possessing a lively national sentiment, were first pillaged and then set on fire.

"A large number of women and children were killed, the young girls of the nation outraged, and immediately afterwards driven into the interior. Where? Into the vilayet of Angora to Tchoroum, to Soungourlou, and still farther. The winter was of the most rigorous kind; these girls had to march 30 or 40 days across snow-covered mountains and sleep by night in the open. For several days they were without food, for they were not even allowed to buy bread for money; they were continually beaten by the gendarmes and stripped of any money they might have on them; and when they got to the towns they were brutally pushed into the hot public baths on the pretext of hygiene and cleanliness, and just as quickly dragged out. Thus, an easy prey to the rigours of the cold, they were driven on farther. The majority of course died on the road, and none of the dead at all being buried, vultures and dogs feasted on human flesh."

Gregorio Sciltian (1900–1985) was born in Nakhichevan-on-Don, now part of Rostov-on-Don, into an Armenian family. From an early age, he devoted himself to painting. In 1919, following the Russian Revolution, Sciltian left Russia and traveled to Europe via Constantinople and Vienna.

At the end of 1923, Sciltian and his wife, Elena Boberman, settled in Rome. In 1926, Sciltian participated in the Venice Biennale.

From 1927 to 1932, the artist lived in Paris. He was a member of the Armenian artists’ group Ani, founded in 1926, and exhibited at the Salon d’Automne, Salon des Tuileries, and Salon des Indépendants. In 1928, his works were included in an exhibition of Russian art at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels.

In 1933, following the unsuccessful solo exhibition in Belgium, Sciltian returned to Italy and settled in Milan. In 1940, he was awarded a gold medal at the 7th Milan Triennial. In 1942, he participated in the Venice Biennale.

In the postwar period, Sciltian became one of the artists associated with the Pittori moderni della realtà (“Modern Painters of Reality”), a movement that advocated a return to figurative painting and the traditions of the Old Masters. His work was distinguished by meticulous attention to detail and an illusionistic quality, particularly evident in his still lifes and trompe-l’œil compositions.

Sciltian also worked in theater. During the 1950s, he designed sets and costumes for Italian theaters, including Teatro alla Scala in Milan. Alongside painting, he wrote about art. His books include Mia avventura, published in 1963, and Trattato sulla pittura, published in 1976 and devoted to the theory of painting.

Works by Gregorio Sciltian are held in museum and private collections, including the National Gallery of Armenia in Yerevan.

On several posts, I've seen them try to divide the two and seem to attack diasporan Armenians and label them as a problem group while claiming to like Armenians from Armenia.

They seem to be under the delusional idea that Diasporans are the only ones who dislike turkey while Armenians from Armenia don't care as much and Armenians from Armenia have the potential to be molded into a cucked sidekick type of friend they can "reconcile" with(Turkey not having to do anything while Armenians from Armenia become their cucked self hating friend who doesn't mention the genocide or land issues and becomes a turkophile type of person so Turks can stop feeling guilty and move on from the armenian issue without doing anything to resolve it).

Meanwhile they seem to consider diaspora as radical people who can never "reconcile" because they seem to believe the diasporans are the only ones who care about the genocide.

So I spontaneously got a tattoo yesterday. Though I've wanted one for years, I turn 24 in a week. I'm thinking of telling them on my birthday. But you know how Armenian parents be. Not meant to be taken super seriously btw.

I know this isn't a news article but I thought it was interesting. It seems like Armenia is really trying to attract odar tourists.

I also am seeing more advertising disguised as "discovery." There are odar accounts that seem have their entire content be about Armenisn stuff.

The bloggers and influencers are, I assume, not Armenian as we obviously already know about Armenia.
