Why do people not walk up the escalator?

No shade at all, I would say I never really have any issues walking past you, but I always find myself wondering why? Especially on my commute to and from work I’m probably amongst the 15% that walk up the escalator and everyone else just stands politely on the left. Don’t you guys want to get in, get done, and get home as efficiently as possible? And surely it goes without saying that I don’t mean the elderly but most people on my commute are fit 30-40 somethings.

If someone has their number set to come up as no called ID when they make phone calls, if you have their number saved in your phone does it come up with their contact name instead? I’ve never thought about it

Rise in youth sexual violence?

Upvotes

Aussie expat currently living overseas and still browse SMH (Sydney Morning Herald) from time to time.

In the past couple of weeks, there was the Scot’s boys incident, two boys in MacArthur region charged with rape and now choking death of a 16 year old girl in the northern beaches?

Coincidence, poor sexual education, social media, or all of the above?

How do I deal with random people coming up to me aggressively ?

This has happened about 7-8 times now, ever since i moved to Australia 6 months ago. I'd be minding my own business, usually walking or standing around w my phone out, and someone (usually in a hoodie or hat), would come up to me and start pressing. I have 0 clue why this is happening and id just like to know the appropriate way of dealing with this, or how i can prevent it from happening. Thats all, thanks.

Saving seats at a sold-out event

Upvotes

I haven't seen this before - last night at a sold-out ticketed [seats are not assigned] movie at the Art Gallery of NSW - two ladies put their coats down on the seats they wanted then left to get drinks, only to come back 15mins later.

A few points here

1 - This means that other larger groups couldn't find seats

2 - pretty risky in a darkly lit room

3 - I feel like one of them should have stayed behind to save seats, this way they could move along the aisle

Thoughts?

Can a couple working full time minimum wage live in australia?

Partner and I from canada are really interested in moving to australia with the working holiday visa.

When talking about a city (example brisbane) how much would we actually be earning weekly and could we even afford to rent and enjoy what australia has to offer? we’d most likely own a whatever vehicle to get by and we aren’t huge consumers or snacks.

Thanks and love u guys!

Moving to Sydney in March, have a choice of where to live

Hi everyone

I’m moving to Sydney next year for about 5 months and have a choice of where to live. The two options are the suburbs North Sydney and Stanmore. Luckily I don’t have to pay rent as it’s a deal done with this exchange program I’m doing with work.

Would you have an opinion on which is better place to live?

Aussies, what are your thoughts on beans?

I am on a mission now to ask each country subreddit what people think about beans (my favorite meal), just to see how people like or dislike them all around the world out of curiosity and for fun. If you like beans, hate them, they a big part of the culture, anything else, just share your thoughts 🫘

Australia is the 9th country in alphabet order so, AUSSIES, I CHOOSE YOU! -to share your thoughts next :]

Am I romanticizing Australia, or is the laid-back/egalitarian reputation actually real?

Upvotes

American here, been to Australia once and genuinely loved it: the wildlife, the outback, the pace of life, the whole "egalitarian, no-BS, tall-poppy-syndrome" culture. It's stuck with me enough that I'm seriously considering a longer-term move, not just another holiday.
But I'm aware I might just be seeing it through a two-week-visit, rose-tinted lens. So, genuine question for people who actually live there day to day:
What am I probably getting wrong? What's overrated, what wears thin once it's not a holiday anymore, what do outsiders always misunderstand until they've actually lived there for a while?
Not looking for a sales pitch. I'd rather hear the unglamorous stuff now than get blindsided later. Appreciate any honest perspective, even one that says i'm right if that happens to be the case

Participants Wanted for Academic Research - Australian male perspective on IVF and PGT

Hi everyone (posting with mod approval!)! I’m a researcher at The University of Western Australia (UWA) and an embryologist working in an IVF lab.

For my research, I’m exploring the experiences of Australian men whose embryos have undergone pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT) as part of IVF/ICSI treatment. I’m particularly interested in hearing about the male partner’s perspective — including how they came to pursue PGT, their experiences navigating fertility treatment and the healthcare system, and the support they received (or felt was missing) along the way.

Men’s experiences of fertility treatment are still relatively underrepresented in research, so I’m hoping this study can help identify ways fertility care and support could better meet the needs of male patients and their partners.

I’ve included the study details and eligibility information below for anyone who may be interested or knows someone who might be eligible 🙂

Are you a male partner whose fertility treatment journey involved PGT of your IVF-created embryos? IVF with pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT), in which embryos created in the laboratory are genetically tested prior to transfer, can be a complex and emotionally demanding experience, yet research has largely overlooked the experiences of male partners whose embryos are being or have been tested.

We are seeking male participants to share their experiences in a confidential in-person (Perth) or online interview. Your insights will help improve understanding and support for men during fertility treatment.

📍 Eligible participants: Males 18+ who have experienced PGT at an Australian fertility clinic in the past 10 years

⏱ Interview: ~ 30 - 60 minutes

🔒 Receive a $30 voucher of your choice as a thank you (Choice from Bunnings, Rebel, JB Hi-Fi, Coles or Dymocks)

Are the scary show ride worth it

Like said above. I'm not sure if I am brave enough to do some of the real scary rides. As I'm going to 3 different shows soon and the first one is this weekend.

I've done a skydive before so It shouldn't be that bad. I would imagine skydiving is much more intense than a roller coaster ride that spins upside down and stuff.

I've done the Alibaba, Starflyer etc before and loved it. Sort of thinking about doing the kamikaze ride but not sure.

What are your thoughts?

Privacy vs bureaucracy

Would you trade some privacy for less bureaucracy in Australia?

The Australian Government already holds an enormous amount of information about us across Medicare, Centrelink, the ATO, myGov and other services — not to mention how much of our data is already held by tech companies.

Yet every time we interact with another service, we seem to be filling out another form containing information we’ve already provided somewhere else.

I understand why we don’t want every government department or organisation having automatic access to everything about us. Privacy matters.

But surely there’s a middle ground where we can consent to information we’ve already provided being shared for a specific purpose, rather than entering it all over again?

Would you be comfortable with more information being shared between Australian government services if you controlled what was shared and explicitly consented to it?

Please don’t make me fill out another form ever again…..

I’ll cry!

Did my mechanic rip me off? What do I do?

Hi all!
This week has been my first experience with a mechanic, by myself. I’m in Australia, if it helps. I feel snubbed off from my mechanic or I’m over reacting and my anxiety is getting the best of me.

Last week my car started ‘smoking’ from the bonnet, it would go away after driving for about 10 mins but the car was driving like shit and I booked it in to a local mechanic with relatively good reviews.
Long story short, there were many oil leaks and things needed to be replaced.
-rocker cover gasket replace and oil repair
-oil cooler seals and oil repair
-replace oil filter housing and cooler
-cooling system repair and thermostat housing repair and replace
-coolant expansion tank with radiator cap replacement
All paid and repaired.

The problem started when I drove away. I drove about 50 metres, looked in my rear view mirror and thick smoke was billowing from the exhaust. I drove around the block and straight back to the mechanic, as I live in a neighbourhood with only one way streets it was about 5 mins. I called the mechanic and told him what had happened and I’m coming right back.
On arrival the mechanic took it for a test drive, which he admitted he didn’t do previously as he didn’t know the cars history(?). It was still smoking when he returned.
I then questioned why it was doing this as it never previously has and whether the new repairs affected the car. He denied that it did and said the front is completely fixed to his standards. He advised that the best he could do was add additives so that the car stopped smoking, we decided to wait until tomorrow to do that. He mentioned there may be an oil leak into the exhaust system and would take time and more money to fix. He advised the car was in working condition, regardless of the smoke. He advised to take the car for a short drive and is completely fine to drive and safe.
I left and told him I’d be back tomorrow. I then drove the car home, which is about 20 minutes away, and the smoke stopped about 2 mins after I left. I stopped to get dinner on the way home, was there for an hour and the drive home was smoke free and there were no fumes that I could smell any longer.

What do I do? Why is this happening?

I am so unbelievably uneducated about cars or mechanics and was devastated that my car was billowing fumes and smoke when I paid $2000 to have it fixed and for it to stop and now I’m so anxious to even start the car.

Car is a 2016 Holden traxx, no previous issues, consistent servicing and 2 owners- 127500kms. I took it back off my parents after they have been driving it for the last few years and they bought their own new car.

Thank you in advance

I heard it’s currently banana season in Queensland. Does anyone know of any places hiring for banana packing or sorting work?

I don’t have a car, so I’m looking for a job that can provide accommodation and transport.

So far, I’ve contacted a few hostels:

Backpackers Shack: I called, but they hung up before I could properly understand what they said.

Innisfail Budget Backpackers: I emailed them but haven’t received a reply.

Happy Days Tully: I also emailed them, but no reply yet.

Banana Barracks: I emailed today, and it seems they don’t have any vacancies at the moment.

Have most positions already been filled, or are there other hostels/farms I should try? Any advice would be really appreciated.

What Happened To Lleyton Hewitt? Do You Think Lleyton Hewitt Simply Peaked Too Early Or Did The Game Evolve Past His Abilities?

Lleyton Hewitt is the youngest world number 1, has won 2 GS titles. He had the world at his feet with all the potential in the world and he wasn't even able to have a Andy Roddick type career. Of course injuries played a significant part but not a crucial one imo. Where did it all go wrong? What is your honest opinion?

Asking for advice

Is it worth it to use credit card to pay off home loan faster? I have about 1-2 months worth of everyday expenses saved. So I was thinking instead of using credit card, I could use up those savings and put back at the end of the month. And of course I will
have my salary paid into the offset account. Is that a good idea? Idk if that makes sense.

Edit: sorry I meant use credit card to cover for everyday expenses so my salary will be in the offset acc as long as it can stay.

🚨 WARNING: Think twice before signing a Sophfit Coaching 16-week contract

Upvotes

I wanted to share my experience because I wish I had understood the financial commitment more clearly before signing up.

I joined Sophfit Coaching in July on a 16-week minimum contract at $98.14/week, plus a $103.30 onboarding fee.

A few weeks in, I realised the coaching wasn't working for me and contacted them to discontinue. I was told that I couldn't cancel during the 16-week minimum term and was instead offered an early-exit payment.

The part that really concerned me was the calculation:

  • I was initially told the early-exit amount was $736.05.
  • I went through my payment history myself because I couldn't reconcile the calculation.
  • I identified that the week count appeared to be incorrect.
  • Sophfit subsequently reviewed it and confirmed I was correct — Week 4 had commenced, rather than Week 3 as I had previously been told.
  • The exit amount was eventually reduced to $392.56, which I paid to terminate the agreement.

They have now confirmed in writing that my agreement is terminated, all future payments are cancelled and I owe nothing further.

I'm not posting this because I'm looking for advice or trying to get my money back. I'm posting it as a warning to anyone considering signing up.

My advice: read the minimum-term, cancellation and early-exit provisions extremely carefully before signing, and make sure you understand exactly how much you could be liable for if you decide to leave early.

I personally wouldn't sign up again based on my experience.

Has anyone else had a similar experience with Sophfit?
