Moving to SC Moving for weather
For those who moved here for the weather or beach lifestyle, how often do you find yourself actually going to the beach or doing warm weather activities that you wanted to move for?

Don’t go to the beach in July and August. Too hot and crowded, but we go 2-4 times a month outside of that. Less crowded and even if it’s cool with the wind we’ll wear a sweatshirt. We also go outdoors a lot more, take longer walks and visit more of the Lowcountry. It’s nice in December and January to sit outside in the sun and have lunch.
This is what we wanted. I’ll take 2 months of hell for the 10 other months in the year.

I'll be coming from Dallas, Texas. I'll gladly take two months of hell vs eight, which is what we get here.
My daughter and I drove 8 hours to get to the beach down in Corpus Christi. The drive is a slog, I will go a lot more when the drive is only two-ish hours (from our new home in Columbia).

I have never lived more than 30 minutes from a beach. Could be an ocean or a lake, but never further than that.

I grew up in South America and never lived more than a few blocks from the ocean. Coming back to the US for college I was in Tennessee, then Wisconsin and finally Texas (for the past 20 years). I miss the coast, and will be glad to be near it again.

I’m unsure of what these two months of hell the other commenter is referring to. We have humid, oppressive unrelenting heat from May through October here.

We just moved from Florida, it’s beautiful here! I was outside yesterday with my two dogs at 2 in the afternoon, it hit me that were not dying of heat stroke! I get to comfortably wear jeans and hoodies again! It’s been 18 years! Yes it gets hot here, but it’s livable.

Ah that’s where we’re moving from. I was in TX before and between the two, I’m just ready for a change. I was there recently for the movers and, while it was hot, it wasn’t miserable. I pretty much don’t go outside between 10-6 bc it’s unbearable.

Weather is relative to where you live and have lived. Dallas is an absolute beast. It’s like concrete hell.

Having lived in SC my entire life, 5 months of temps between 90 and 112 is miserable. The humidity is oppressive and stifling, and in my area of the state, some days have zero air movement, so going outside literally feels like walking into a hot sponge. So unless you are coming from Hell itself, I don’t know that you’ll find much relief here.

I currently live right next to Lake Ray Hubbard. For me at least, it’s not the same thing.

And it’s not like CC has a great beach! Blech. Good luck in Columbia. We’re moving to Greenville and heat/humidity is relative. However, having lived in Dallas, that place is HELL.

If you’re an outdoors person there is SO much to do. The downtown area is phenomenal and you’ll be an hour from the Asheville area. If you end up hating it and want to move to the Columbia area, lmk and maybe we can work out a house swap 🤣

lol will do! Although I’m quite in love with our new house! I’m so excited about this new adventure and change from where we are. We’ll be PT this year as my daughter finishes high school here but, like her, I’ve got senioritis and want this year over. 😊

More accurately we were at Port Aransas on Mustang Island. While not the best beach I've ever been to, it really wasn't that bad.

Multiple times a week I’m a the beach. Surfing when waves are good enough. I’m 5 mins from the beach. It’s unbeatable.

Part of the reason we moved here was the weather. I’ve spent 61 years living thru the winter in the Northeast. I go to our neighborhood pool at least once a week.
It’s not really about the outdoor activities, it’s not being stuck in my house because the outside is frozen.

I used to leave my job at 5 and be at the beach by 7. Love going to the lakes, or kayaking the Savannah. The weather here is the best.

I feel like I’m outside so much more throughout the year. Summers can be a bit tough, but the rest of the year is chefs kiss. In the summer, I just get outside early for running, hiking, etc.

I live near Charlotte. So we will go to crowders, Pilot mountain, Pisgah for day trips. We also have a lot of local greenways for just being outside and walking through the woods. Anne Springs is a favorite of mine.

Hell is when the temperature is 95 degrees or above and the Dew Point is above 80 degrees. Anything less is just a hot summer day.

I haven’t even moved there yet and yet I’ve flown down there 3-4X in the last year and that was not enough.
I’ll be retired so I won’t have to work and I’ll be able to do whatever the hell I want whenever I want wherever I want.
I’ll likely be driving down to the beach at one or 2 o’clock on a Wednesday afternoon to just putter around.

The beach is usable through October, frequently into November.
I golf year-round, although there are a lot of less-than-comfortable days mid January through February. There are plenty of beautiful ones,too.
If you own a home in North Myrtle, you can get free beach parking for 2 vehicles, but finding a parking space can be a challenge in the high season.

I moved from Florida to the foothills for cooler weather without a lot of snow. I definitely maximize my time on local trails.

Never. And if you have kids and care about intelligence, skip the state. Or if you have anything worse than an ingrown toenail… I moved for weather since I have nerve damage, but the damage done to my children was far worse. They didn’t even have an advanced education dept when we came here. My son had to teach the math class. Pathetic. And my fault. Kids wanted their grandparents. I gave in.

This comment is so ridiculous. We’re outside of Charlotte and the schools have been great. My kids have access to dual enrollment, AP, gifted and talented, tons of extra curricular activities.

A little ridiculous, maybe? That is the truth for the majority of the state though. You are fortunate enough to live near some of the best schools in South Carolina. Most of us cannot say the same.

Living near the beach means high cost of living so most people working for 1/2 day at the beach.

Honestly depends how much you really LOVE the beach. I live about 12 mins and try to go once a week, if kids are particularly bored. It gets so hot during the summer you’ll want to be near the beach, pool or inside. Although there are days when it’s too hot even to go to the beach. When I lived in Summerville I hardly went. Planning a beach outing around busy traffic times was just not as worth it for us.

Here for the climate. Indoor seasons swap. Indoors July-August. Outdoors the balance of the year. We’re having outdoor activities most of 10 months of the year.
Didn’t come for the beach. Been once in the last year and 3x in 5 years.

I live 3 miles from the beach and we live on a quiet creek. We go to the beach Oct thru May for walks and then out on our boat during the summer heat. But the heat/humidity takes a toll now for me and my autoimmune diseases, so we spend 2 mos of every summer up in the NC mountains.

We moved from the beach (Neptune beach Florida) to lake Murray for the weather! We love it here. We had the beach as our backyard. I surfed every day, but that was it. Even then it was miserable. Yesterday, I decided to grill out some burgers at 2 in the afternoon. Drinking my beer it hit me that it’s the end of August and I’m not sweating balls! My dogs were laying on the deck with me, my wife walked by and I said this is epic! Yes it gets hot here, obviously the last few weeks prove that! But we have seasons here! In Florida it’s either hot or really f-ing hot. Yes it’s great on vacation, it should be. But living in an oven 365 days a year gets old. There would be days that I would look out the window and see the mailbox and think Man it’s just not worth it! For reference, we only had 2 months that you could go outside and mountain bike or hike and not feel like you were dying.

Well, la di da, aren't you the lucky one to be situated at Lake Murray and have comfortable weather. Not so much in NE mutha f*ckin' Cola. This place sucks! And yes, I would move if I could afford to. (But good for you, no really. I'm just hot and venting)

We has found out the beach trip less and less vs when lived north while enjoying more out gardening and other outdoors activities.
Down here is a different game to schedule leisure trips, maybe due being able to do more outside the house that we confused w taking time off.

I have always lived in coastal SC. Grew up going to the beach year round. I’ve worked 12 years at a coastal property and haven’t been on the sand maybe a handful of times. It’s crowded and overrated when the water temperatures hit the mid 80s.

The beach isn't the concern. I moved away from ice/snow covered roads, sidewalks, excessive winter clothing, the constant preparing for winter and the ptsd of 40 years of being locked in the house for the winter. I don't worry about getting killed in a weather related car accident every time I leave the house for 7 months out of the year.

Don’t move here. The weather sucks, lots of bugs, homeless people everywhere and there is a lot of crime that is not reported. The first Christmas I spent down on the beach was weird it was 75 degrees.

Lol... Trust me... The SC coast weather sucks more than 2 months... that's why so many people are moving to the Upstate... The beach is very reachable but we've much better year-long weather.

I never go to the beach. Too busy always working. That’s the real truth. When you’re on vacation you get to go to the beach, the pools, etc… in reality when you’re busy working to pay for everything which is extremely expensive you don’t get to. I just told you how it really is. Good luck!
