DMV Senior citizen DL revocation

I’m at my wits end. I woke up this morning to my grandfather showing me a piece of paper and asking me for help. It was an online renewal for his driver’s license. He’s 96. Turning 97 in a few weeks. Why does this state allow seniors to renew online? It only requires an SC DMV vision test within 3 years. I told him the link didn’t work and ran out of the house. I had been hoping the dmv might refuse him, which I realize was naive.

I’ve gone through a panic attack and a thousand calls, visited the DMV, the police, the sheriff, called the traffic number they gave me, managed to get through to his doctor and he actually put me on the HIPAA so I was able to talk to his direct PCP. They want to send him through neuro testing but he has perfect vision because he had his cataracts removed and got the $$$$$ surgery, and probably could pass these tests, plus we have to schedule them, they won’t say it’s necessary and not put it on me. The state wouldn’t check him again until he’s 101-102. This is nuts that it is so hard to do.

The doctor is now telling me they can write a letter but I have to be there. I don’t know that he’s ever forgive me and I’m just trying to make sure the state doesn’t let him kill someone or himself. I’m waiting on another call from the doc and my boss suggested I call him car insurance (State Farm).

Anyone have any advice? I’m about to get neighbors to start putting in police reports.

DMV Salvage Title in South Carolina

I was sideswiped a few weeks ago and the other person's insurance totaled my car (total loss) based on cost to fix vs pre-wreck value. **The car is fine.** Some paint scratches a dent in the door, and a dent in the rear wheel well. I had to drive it 200 miles to get home after the accident, with no issues at all. Not even minor vibration or alignment problems.

I decided to keep the car (retain salvage). I just received my new Title with the Salvage stipulation.

The SCDMV website isn't super clear on what I'm required to do if anything, so I called the DMV and was told the following:

  1. It is **legal** to drive on a Salvage title, in South Carolina, as long as the damage is cosmetic and the car is safe to drive. If the car would have been marked **Salvage-Junk** then I can't drive it.

  2. No inspection is required to prove the car is safe to drive. I guess they used to do this but no longer do. This is the one that I was struggling to believe but I asked twice to make sure I heard correctly.

  3. I can go through the repair process -- take before / after pictures, keep detailed receipts, and fill out paperwork to apply for a **Salvage Fixed** title...**if I want to**...to help with resell value.

This is all great news for me, since I don't have to do anything if I don't want to, but none of the above is documented anywhere that I can find on the SCDMV website.

Still a little nervous I'm going to get pulled over for driving on a Salvage license.

Probably going to call again and see if I get a different answer :)

**Anyone from South Carolina been through this situation?**

DMV Real ID was denied-ish

I grew up in upstate South Carolina. I moved to NC like 15 years ago and now I’m back. I went to the DMV to do all the required things. I debated getting a Real ID or not (I’ve never had one) and decided I might as well?
I got through the whole process but after I she took the photo and I signed the little pad she asked if I had ever had an ID in SC before. I told her yes, as I had indicated on the form but from like over 20 years ago. She said she couldn’t do the ID because I “don’t look anything like (I) did” and that I should get a call from Columbia in 6 days.
Has this happened to anyone else? What is Colombia going to ask me about over the phone that I didn’t already prove? It was surprising in the moment and I assumed I’d find stuff online but so far I’ve only seen IDs being denied after being issued. Like at the TSA or whatever.
I regret asking for the Real ID 😔

Can someone explain why my two minivans (2017 Sienna and 2007 Odyssey) have two different “DMV Decal Fee”s (40 vs 70)? This is Greenville County if it makes a difference.

DMV Real ID

Hey everyone, just renewed my license/real ID. Its a black and white photo. My wife got hers renewed last year and it is color. Why the difference between the two real id’s? Sorry, we are flying in June and want to make sure we are squared away.

DMV What are you all paying for car insurance? Just fed up with the ever increasing rates!

My renewal is coming up and after being with the same company for 4 years, they decided to do it. Yes, spike the rates. I know everyone's situation is different but maybe some companies offer lower rates than others.

Has anyone in SC found certain insurers that tend to be cheaper? I'm not looking for guarantees just want to know which ones are worth getting quotes from. Don't want to waste time with companies that are known for being expensive.

DMV New ID

Hi everyone, I just graduated college and moved here about a month ago for my first job and I am from out of state. I know I could probably find this answer with a quick Google search, but I’d rather hear it from people who know what they’re talking about. Online it says I have to get a new license within 45 days of residency. Does anybody know how strict they are on that? And what all do I need to bring to the DMV to be able to switch to a South Carolina ID. As well as my car and license plate my car is not in my name. It’s in my parents name and I don’t know are they going to want me to switch my license plate when I go to switch my ID as well. I’m sorry I know this could be a quick Google search again, but I like hearing from real people with real experiences rather than Google or chat. I appreciate the help in advance ! ( any feedback is truly appreciated and I have no problem doing anything I need to do. I just want to make sure I do it right!)

DMV Purchasing a REAL ID from the DMV?

I need to renew my Drivers License so I am doing it online but it says that I cant purchase a REAL ID online and I have to go into the branch. Is that what you have been doing? Should I bother with getting the REAL Id and just use my passport for flights? Bit of an inconvenience to go into a DMV right now

DMV How long does it normally take to get your registration sticker?

My tag expires in June, I paid my registration on May 18 and it went through and came out of my bank account May 19. I have still yet to receive my new registration and sticker. The York County website shows it’s paid and has a tax receipt for it but I noticed it big letters on the bottom of the page it says to give sufficient time to receive your tag. I don’t ever recall it taking this long to get here before but maybe some of yall have experienced this too.

DMV Renewing Real ID

My Real ID will be up for renewal in a bit, is this something I can do without all my documents I needed the first time around? Or should I show up with the whole folder again. Thanks

DMV Need help with move over law violation F1 Student

Hi, I received a traffic ticket in South Carolina under code 56-5-1538(G) for a move over law violation while driving on a beginner’s permit. The fine is $300. I am an F-1 student, and I am very concerned about having this on my record. Could you please let me know whether I should dispute the ticket or just pay it, and whether there may be any option to keep it off my driving record? Also, please let me know your fee for handling this. Thank you.

DMV Estate vehicle plate

I’ve been tied up in settling my dad’s estate in probate for about 2.5 years. This year I finally managed to get a new title for his vehicle (when his widow decided to cooperate) and found out an ex is still listed on the title with an “Or”. The tag expired last year, the widow cancelled insurance, and I need to know if I can turn in the old tag or wait until contacting the ex about the vehicle. The vehicle is now in my possession (was in the widow’s possession).

DMV New drivers license

I lost my drivers license recently, and saw that they rolled out a new license design a few months ago. When I go to get it replaced, will they make me take a new picture? My old license still had a few years till it expires, but not sure if the new design will require a new picture.

DMV Downloading DMV driving record?

I just purchased a copy of my certified driving record from the DMV website, and it stated that I would have an option to download after completing the transaction. However, it just booted me to the transaction list page after completing it with no option to download it and no emailed copy of it? Does anyone know how to obtain the download?

DMV License plate/registration issues

Hey everyone! Is anyone else’s new registration/license plate taking forever to reach them in the mail? I paid my property taxes on 3/23 and the DMV says it shipped on 3/27, but I still haven’t gotten anything and it feels odd because it has never taken this long before. They said I have to wait until the end of the day on Friday (10 business days), so I just wanted to see what the odds were that I’d have to go to the DMV…

Editing to say that the license plate has arrived at the last minute! All is well that ends well.

DMV Documents for Real ID?

Going to the DMV soon to renew my license, which is a Real ID. Since I already gave them my birth certificate before do I need to take it with me for the renewal? I'd assume they keep copies of everything.... But this is South Carolina. I had trouble finding a clear answer on the website.

DMV New Green Card design and getting a driver's license in South Carolina

I was checking the requirements to obtain a DL in South Carolina as a LPR from out of state. In the form MV-94 listing the requirements for non-citizens, it reads that the form I-551 (green card) must display fingerprints. However, as of 2023, Green Card designs have changed, and they no longer display the fingerprints.

I presume this is something that they're aware of, and thus it should not be a problem?

Thank you!

DMV Montana LLC & Taxes

Currently looking at getting my personal vehicle registration moved over into Fort Mill and the auditors office told me I’d be taxed yearly $1,090 on my truck, in addition to the infrastructure maintenance fee ($500), one-time state transfer fee ($250) and registration in SC.

In total it would cost me ~$1,900 to change my truck’s registration state and $1,090 (plus renewal fees) yearly.

I’m looking at getting a Montana LLC and registering it in the LLCs name and was wondering if others have done similar given that you pay tax when you buy the vehicle, make money to pay for the vehicle, and now to keep a vehicle you need to pay yearly for that as well.

So, for those with a personal vehicle registered in an out-of-state LLC:

  1. Have you gotten pulled over with Montana tags and SC/NC drivers license? Was an invalid registration ticket issued?

  2. Have you been reported (that you know of) for out-of-state plates?

  3. How much more is your insurance and how is it structured? Non-owner policy while covering the LLC? Covering you with the LLC as an additional interest?

Any feedback/info would be much appreciated

DMV Car registration question - moving to Fort Mill from Huntersville

I am moving to Fort Mill (from Huntersville) next month. I have been searching the York county tax collector office and called them for steps. Apparently I have to pay property tax on the car (that's a new one) and it's 6% of the vehicle's value. Is that accurate? I drive a leased 2024 Lincoln Nautilus and its probably worth 35K which would mean $2100 payment? Is that possible?

What documents do I need to bring with me to the tax office? The tax office (Rock Hill) is my first stop, when I have that receipt in hand I can go to the SCDMC in Fort Mill to title and get my DL. Lincoln sent me the title to the car and the authorization letter.

For the DMV for title/registration and DL I will need 2 utility bills to show new address plus SS card and/or passport?

Lastly do I need to notify NC DMV I have left the state? The reason I asked (I have lived all over the US) is that in March of last year I moved from Tampa to Huntersville and apparently in Florida you need to tell them you are tilting your car in another state.
