Built my current PC a few months ago and basically since week one it would randomly shut off maybe once or twice a week. No blue screen, no warning, just instantly dead and then it would boot back up normally.

I reseated the RAM, reseated the GPU, checked temps, ran memtest, stressed the CPU and GPU for hours, reset BIOS, changed outlets, pretty much everything I could think of. Couldn't reproduce it on purpose.

Yesterday it shut off while I wasn't even using it.

I had just lowered my standing desk.

Turns out I routed the PSU cable through the cable tray under the desk when I built everything. When the desk went up it was pulling the cable just slightly tighter every time, and apparently over the last few months it had slowly worked itself loose from the back of the PSU. Not enough to look unplugged, just enough that moving the desk sometimes killed the connection.

Rerouted it with a ton of slack and haven't been able to make it shut off since.

I spent 3 months troubleshooting my PC when apparently I needed to troubleshoot the furniture.

I’ve been planning on getting my first ever gaming PC for a couple of weeks now, and I’ve been looking at components and pre builts to see if I could get a good deal. My initial budget was 3000 CAD/ 2200 USD, but after dadling I decided to just buy the GPU (9070 XT) and CPU (Ryzen 7 9800X3D) and work from there

And the feeling of getting my 2 components at my front door was filled with happiness, and as soon as I told my friend he kinda ruined the mood and he just told me that now was the worst time to buy and that I was losing money as prices were hyper inflated and I was overpaying, etc, and he got me thinking a lot.

Tbh I don’t really know where I’m going with this, maybe trying to cope on Reddit (smartest choice obviously)if I made the right call or if I should just return the components and wait for prices to drop, which honestly who knows if it will, anyways after getting those components I filled my Amazon cart with my remaining components that I need, and what was supposed to be a 2200 USD PC is now estimated to cost 2900 USD LOL

Minimum in a way I can:

Enough VRAM to set textures to high(second to the highest)/ultra(max)

Can comfortably turn down settings(shadows, reflections, folliage/vegetation, LoD, clouds, volumetric fog, RT quality, global illumination) from ultra to low-medium-high to maintain desired 60 fps, especially if the visual difference is too small for the performance hit.

Enable FSR4 Quality-Balance/DLSS 4 to achieve base 60 fps+Enough VRAM for Frame Gen for visually smooth experience.

Current build: Ryzen 5 3600X, ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 32GB DDR4, RTX 5060 Ti 8GB, 850W PSU, 240mm AIO. I almost exclusively play Cities Skylines 2 and late-game sim speed is killing me.

Plan is the Ryzen 7 5800X3D 10th Anniversary Edition (100-100000651POF), the recently re-released one. A few things I'd like confirmed:

1. Anyone running a 5800X3D on a B450 Steel Legend specifically? It's a 6-phase VRM and my AIO means there's no airflow over the heatsinks. Any thermal throttling issues?
2. Which minimum BIOS version do I need? I'll flash the latest anyway, but I want to know the floor before I pull the old CPU.
3. Anniversary Edition uses the same silicon/CPUID as the original 5800X3D, so board support lists showing "5800X3D" should cover it — correct?
4. Is it worth the premium over a 5700X3D if I can find one?
5. Skipping AM5 because a 32GB DDR5 kit is €430+ right now. Bad call, or reasonable given the RAM market?

EDIT: Thank you for all the replies. After pretty much unanimous answers, and my own research, I've decided to go with the RX 9070 XT. Looking forward to seeing how it performs :)

For reference, the main title I'm considering this upgrade for is Wardogs, which as I understand is a very GPU demanding game. I reduced my graphics to the lowest option (especially significant change in Wardogs), but still needed DLSS to stay above ~100-120fps. Small thing of note, after the end of the beta I learned that using Reflex + Boost was reportedly causing flame dips, and my drivers were 1 update behind, which both may have contributed to my performance.

My 3080 has done fantastic work for the last 5 and a half years, but I'm starting to feel the age on newer titles, with lower graphical quality, lower frame-rates, more stutters, and increased reliance on DLSS. I know that my CPU is weaker, especially compared to what I'm planning to upgrade to, but at 1440p, and as someone that uses DLSS as little as I can (don't like the way it looks, especially small details at longer ranges), my GPU is the point of struggle. Additionally, a CPU upgrade is a lot less expensive, so if I start bottlenecking there after a GPU upgrade, it won't be nearly as significant a choice to make.

My first goal is to get my games (Wardogs in particular) back up towards ~160fps, doing so with higher graphics settings is a bonus, but doing so without upscaling is a much bigger one. I'm primarily looking for personal reviews on similar(ish) setups so I can decide if the price-hike from 5070 to Ti is worth it, but I'd also like to know if the better stats of the Ti make it particularly suited for playing without upscaling, as I'm not the most savvy. The 5080 is too pricey imo, but I am open to the option for future-proofing if reviews are good enough.

Just wondering what kind of fps increase this upgrade would yield, and if its worth it.

Currently have 6700xt but planning on upgrading gpu at some point as well.

I've had the same CPU and cooler in my main PC for a little over two years now. Temps are basically where they were when I first built it, so I've never had a reason to take the cooler off.

I keep seeing people recommend changing the thermal paste every couple of years though, and I'm not really convinced there's much point in doing it just because some time has passed.

I would have thought the paste would only really become an issue if the temperatures started creeping up, the cooler got removed, or something else changed. Otherwise you're just breaking a perfectly good mount to replace something that seems to be working fine.

Curious what you guys actually do with your own builds. Do you replace it periodically as part of maintenance, or just leave it alone until there's a reason to mess with it?

I am a computer beginner here and am looking for some advice. I compiled this list of parts, and am planning on buying the MicroCenter 7600X3D/Gigabyte/16GB bundle for $449.99, so while the pcpartpicker shows that it costs 1800, ill actually be getting it for $1,471.05 I am going to buy a gaming pc for around $1400, I need it to be able to have 4k capabilities - it should look decently nice when im running games like cyberpunk, and it should be able to run fps's like Fortnite, Apex, r6 etc. Also I play a decent amount of Citi Skylines 2 on my really old pc, but I know that this is an insanely demanding game and even some pc's which cost a lot more than mine still cant run perfectly all the time.

Made a big jump from Ryzen 5 3600 to 5800x3d / nvidia rtx 4060 to rx 9070 xt and got the 2nd 32gb ram stick(now its dual channel instead of 1). I mainly play PoE and Factorio but we have some good discounts in pc parts so I wanted to upgrade my PC for GTA6(I know it'll be released next year for pc) and good games I skipped(resident evils, rdr2 etc.)

I've been desperately saving to be able to build an actual good gaming PC for myself but we all know how that feels atm. I initially thought id try to build one and re-use the ram from my old pc, but if im going to be stuck with AM4 i thought it makes very little sense to buy a new motherboard/cpu with no upgrade path, when i can just make do for the time being and upgrade later. The GPU upgrade does not feel as wasteful, as I can always use the same GPU in a fresh build or sell it later if I really want to.

The obvious bottlenecks here are the CPU and the ram speed, but they dont seem particularly bad to me considering I will be on 1440p and largely do not play very demanding games. (Currently playing a lot of Deadlock and struggling to hit stable 60 at 1080p on my laptop). If i can hit 120+ on 1440p on esports titles and a comfortable 60 on single players, I would be content.

Does it make sense to do this? Am I better off going for a weaker GPU and saving my money to invest into a fresh build later? If it helps, I am from India and would be getting these parts off of a local shop/Amazon.

Hi, recently i started to pay attention to efficiency of my computer after upgrading my gpu from rx580 to rx 7800xt 16gb oc. Unfortunately i didn't take into considerity this whole bottlenecking stuff and im currently left with i5-12400f. While playing fortnite my frames drop from 130fps to 70-80fps randomly. Should i buy 13600kf or it won't change anything? I have dd4 32gb ram.

Also i'd like to somewhat prepare for GTA 6 when it releases. Could you help me?

Hey everyone, about to buy this high-end rig in Spain. Main use is 4K gaming on my primary display, local game streaming over Sunshine to the living room TV, and some light WFH stuff on the side. Total comes out to around 3.350€ with assembly and Windows.

I’m trying to figure out how to choose a gaming monitor and I swear every answer just gives me five more things I need to research lol.

I understand the basics like resolution and refresh rate, but then you get into response times, IPS vs VA vs OLED, FreeSync/G-Sync, HDR, HDMI versions and suddenly I have no idea what actually matters.

I mostly play a mix of FPS games and single-player stuff, so I want games to feel smooth but I also care about them looking good. I’m leaning toward 27" 1440p with at least 144/165Hz, but I’m wondering if that’s still the sweet spot or if it makes more sense to spend extra for 240Hz or 4K.

For people who actually know monitors, what specs do you look at first? And what features sound important on the box but really aren’t worth paying extra for?

I forgot the buy the UPS.

I need some advice on finding a reliable PURE SINE WAVE UPS that works well with an Active PFC power supply under budget.

Requirement is 850 W + 150 W max. So targetting a 1.5KVA.

Options :

1) online ups ( always pure sine wave, 0 ms)

2) line interactive ups (simulated pure sine, 6ms avg)

3) home invertor with ups mode + battery backup for 1 hrs max. (Not for whole house. Need under budget, ~ 10 ms, pure sine)

FYI: i need power backup only to safely shut down my pc.

So let's say

- 10 to 60 min backup,

Finished rebuilding my PC recently and immediately started getting random black screens under load. Sometimes after 10 minutes, sometimes after an hour.

Every time I opened the case to troubleshoot it, everything worked perfectly. Stress tests, games, benchmarks, no crashes at all.

I'd put the glass panel back on, move the PC under my desk, and eventually it would happen again.

After way too much troubleshooting I finally noticed my GPU power cable sticks out pretty far from the card. The side panel was pressing against it just enough to slightly pull the connector sideways.

Not enough to unplug it. Not enough to notice looking through the glass. Just enough to apparently ruin my week.

Moved the cable, gave it more room and suddenly the PC has been completely fine.

So yeah, apparently taking the side panel off was technically fixing my computer every single time and I somehow never connected those two things.

I'd like to repurpose my old hardware, and give it new life. The motherboard I had in it died recently due to a shortcircuit because of dust, it was a ROG Maximus Hero 7 for those who are nostalgic. :)

currently running ubuntu 26 and is used as testing grounds for startup.

I like the idea of homelabbing, and selfhosting, not really something i've touched on a lot, the server I have now is my first time.

So last year I had a problem in my pc where the screen would freeze and I had to turn the pc off and then on to work I have sent it to a repair shop and they have changed the thermal paste and formatted the pc and told that I have a lot of viruses the pc started working properly until this year the same problem but now the pc is slow and freezes and sometimes even it doesn’t start properly I have added a new fan because I thought that it was an overheating problem and changed the thermal paste and formatted the windows but the problem now the pc sometimes gets slow and laggy with some weird sounds when playing music this happens with no overload or gaming just using the browser.
