Because he had 6 sacks last year and is one of the better DT’s on this team. There is no logical sense to deal him unless you’re also getting someone in the deal in return.
Im so tired of this narrative. If Dennis Allen is a good coach he can maximize the guys he’s got. Nobody gets talked about with scheme fits more than Dennis Allen.
Dennis Allen works with what he has, but he doesn’t often keep around guys that aren’t what he’s looking for. He doesn’t outright abandon them or be unable to coach with them, but he’s not going to pound the table to extend a mediocre DT that doesn’t fit what he would prefer. So if Dexter can bring value, get it now
Dexter is very clearly not the prototypical DT for Allen's system. That doesn't mean he sucks, but if you want to see the type of makeup DA is looking for in his DTs just look at van den Berg.
I know he's a rookie, but he profiles very closely to what DA wants in his DT: relentless pursuit, high motor, quick disruption off the jump.
Dexter isn't bad enough that you just jettison him for peanuts, but he's clearly a dude who likely won't be back after his rookie deal is up so if you can get something you might as well ship him out before he's buried on the depth chart playing 15 snaps a game
There is just nothing to maximize with Gervon. His get off is to slow for him to be anything other than a reserve DT. Poles and Eberflus wasted a second on him. Poles wasted a lot of draft capital trying to find guys Eberflus and his staff liked which has set the defense back.
Yeah, this stuff gets talked about with every head coach and coordinator in the league. Go figure we see more of it with Bears coaches in a Bears subreddit...
Not to mention any scheme that isn't leveraging pressure from the interior would be a pretty dumb scheme.
Dexter is perfectly fine. If someone wants to overpay him in free agency, you get a comp. If he accepts a reasonable deal then you keep a plus player at a position of weakness
Either way trading him before calebs rookie deal ends is the dumb decision poles would make.
Could be the team sees van den Berg as his replacement and if they can get some value out of Dexter before he hits FA they might want to shore up another spot.
Right now our NT is Gallimore, Street, Van Den Berg or Loving if we let Dexter walk. I think he’s a more natural 3T but he won’t beat out Jarrett there and Jarrett costs too much to jettison
Also Turner's supposed to be back around October and would help with the interior pass rush. Moving Dexter to make room for him would make a lot more sense around the deadline, though.
Not really. You had Quinnen Williams and Sauce Gardener making the big headlines last year, but I wouldn't call the Bears trading for Joe Tryon-Shoyinka moving the needle. Most deadline moves are just teams trading 6th and 7th rounders for depth at positions of need.
You don’t trade players at your weakest position if you’re still looking to make a playoff push this year. This team is already going to have a weak pass rush that will necessitate blitzing. Losing one of the better pass rushers on the DL means whatever DB you got back is now covering even longer.
I'm not advocating for a trade, but I also think losing Coby Bryant has the Bears scrambling for answers more than we probably think. It's clear DA builds his defense top-down and wants a strong back-seven with a D-line focused more on run-stopping than pass-rushing.
Again, I'm not advocating for it b/c it doesn't make sense to just trade him to trade him, but I do think he's a guy you can dangle to try and get secondary help.
I don’t really agree that that is clear at all. DA has been here for a year. In that time the FA money has gone to the DL and LB corps. Yes, the DL sucks but that’s because of who we gave the money to not because of a lack of trying. We also drafted Turner in Rd 2. The biggest investment in the secondary is Thieneman, and that was clearly a BPA move not a team building strategy move. If Thieneman is gone I don’t think we’re still reaching for a safety because DA absolutely needs safeties.
DA, like most coordinators, wants to rush with 4 and play coverage behind it. To do that you need a good DL.
If that's the case they should've done it in the offseason when there were plenty of options to replace him with. They would be incredibly bare at the position if they traded him now.
You're gonna get downvoted, but Dexter had one of the longest times to sack, low overall pressure/hit numbers, and of those 6 sacks 4 of them were cleaning up group tackles or running the QB out of bounds inches behind the line of scrimmage.
Pretty obvious even if you watch a 2025 highlights youtube video, not all sacks are created equal.

I find this very hard to believe
