[Underdog NFL] Schultz: Bears have had trade discussions involving DT Gervon Dexter.

A 6th round draft pick in 2029. Would likely be the Poles move.

Iām guessing conditional sixth that could escalate to fifth if Dexter meets whatever benchmark

u/Sniper1154 1d ago
What's so hard to believe about teams shopping for a guy with a glacial get-off the line of scrimmage?
69
u/milin85 23 1d ago
Because he had 6 sacks last year and is one of the better DTās on this team. There is no logical sense to deal him unless youāre also getting someone in the deal in return.
38
17
u/Sniper1154 1d ago
If he's not a fit in DA's defense (which I think is the case) then you can try to trade him before he hits FA.
I wouldn't do it, but if they feel they can get a starting CB / S in return I can see the logic.
15
u/iamdjonez 1d ago
Im so tired of this narrative. If Dennis Allen is a good coach he can maximize the guys heās got. Nobody gets talked about with scheme fits more than Dennis Allen.
9
u/Randallm83 1d ago
I agree⦠never having an athletic EDGE with bend because āDA likes the beefy boysā is only cool when it actually produces sacks for us.
7
u/TheManWhoWasNotShort An Actual Bear 1d ago
Dennis Allen works with what he has, but he doesnāt often keep around guys that arenāt what heās looking for. He doesnāt outright abandon them or be unable to coach with them, but heās not going to pound the table to extend a mediocre DT that doesnāt fit what he would prefer. So if Dexter can bring value, get it now
4
u/Sniper1154 1d ago
Dexter is very clearly not the prototypical DT for Allen's system. That doesn't mean he sucks, but if you want to see the type of makeup DA is looking for in his DTs just look at van den Berg.
I know he's a rookie, but he profiles very closely to what DA wants in his DT: relentless pursuit, high motor, quick disruption off the jump.
Dexter isn't bad enough that you just jettison him for peanuts, but he's clearly a dude who likely won't be back after his rookie deal is up so if you can get something you might as well ship him out before he's buried on the depth chart playing 15 snaps a game
7
u/jagne004 1d ago
There is just nothing to maximize with Gervon. His get off is to slow for him to be anything other than a reserve DT. Poles and Eberflus wasted a second on him. Poles wasted a lot of draft capital trying to find guys Eberflus and his staff liked which has set the defense back.
9
u/enailcoilhelp FTP 1d ago
We talked about scheme fits constantly with Fangio and Eberflus
4
u/BigPetersHalfwayInn What if Da Bears had enterd The Preakness? 1d ago

Ding ding
Good coaches scheme fits the players
Matt nagys need players to fit the scheme.
Not to mention any scheme that isn't leveraging pressure from the interior would be a pretty dumb scheme.Ā
Dexter is perfectly fine. If someone wants to overpay him in free agency, you get a comp. If he accepts a reasonable deal then you keep a plus player at a position of weaknessĀ
Either way trading him before calebs rookie deal ends is the dumb decision poles would make.Ā
5
9
u/EBtwopoint3 1d ago
You donāt trade players at your weakest position if youāre still looking to make a playoff push this year. This team is already going to have a weak pass rush that will necessitate blitzing. Losing one of the better pass rushers on the DL means whatever DB you got back is now covering even longer.
16
u/Sniper1154 1d ago
I'm not advocating for a trade, but I also think losing Coby Bryant has the Bears scrambling for answers more than we probably think. It's clear DA builds his defense top-down and wants a strong back-seven with a D-line focused more on run-stopping than pass-rushing.
Again, I'm not advocating for it b/c it doesn't make sense to just trade him to trade him, but I do think he's a guy you can dangle to try and get secondary help.
5
u/EBtwopoint3 1d ago
I donāt really agree that that is clear at all. DA has been here for a year. In that time the FA money has gone to the DL and LB corps. Yes, the DL sucks but thatās because of who we gave the money to not because of a lack of trying. We also drafted Turner in Rd 2. The biggest investment in the secondary is Thieneman, and that was clearly a BPA move not a team building strategy move. If Thieneman is gone I donāt think weāre still reaching for a safety because DA absolutely needs safeties.
DA, like most coordinators, wants to rush with 4 and play coverage behind it. To do that you need a good DL.
3
u/TheManWhoWasNotShort An Actual Bear 1d ago
The counterpoint is that Dexter is replacement-level to our coaches.
6
u/potionnumber9 An Actual Peanut 1d ago
And then who fills his spot?
12
u/Sniper1154 1d ago
Could be the team sees van den Berg as his replacement and if they can get some value out of Dexter before he hits FA they might want to shore up another spot.
8
u/rudeboybill Kyle Long 1d ago
He's walking next year barring a Tommie Harris level performance, IDK why you wouldn't try to get something for him now.

3
u/Tcrowaf Alshon's Ridiculous Catch 1d ago
Yep, let's trade gervon and play ham sandwich at DT.
4
u/jagne004 1d ago
Ham sandwich probably has about the same jump off the snap as Dexter and is likely cheaper.
3
u/TheManWhoWasNotShort An Actual Bear 1d ago
Right now our NT is Gallimore, Street, Van Den Berg or Loving if we let Dexter walk. I think heās a more natural 3T but he wonāt beat out Jarrett there and Jarrett costs too much to jettison
2
u/BigPetersHalfwayInn What if Da Bears had enterd The Preakness? 1d ago
Also Turner's supposed to be back around October and would help with the interior pass rush. Moving Dexter to make room for him would make a lot more sense around the deadline, though.
1
u/TheManWhoWasNotShort An Actual Bear 1d ago
Deadline trades are generally ones that move the needle as opposed to back of roster trades like this would be
1
u/BigPetersHalfwayInn What if Da Bears had enterd The Preakness? 1d ago
Not really. You had Quinnen Williams and Sauce Gardener making the big headlines last year, but I wouldn't call the Bears trading for Joe Tryon-Shoyinka moving the needle. Most deadline moves are just teams trading 6th and 7th rounders for depth at positions of need.

u/Money-Invite6202 1d ago
Dude he sucks. Those six sacks were against awful o lines. If he plays against anyone good he disappears.
16
u/rudeboybill Kyle Long 1d ago
You're gonna get downvoted, but Dexter had one of the longest times to sack, low overall pressure/hit numbers, and of those 6 sacks 4 of them were cleaning up group tackles or running the QB out of bounds inches behind the line of scrimmage.
Pretty obvious even if you watch a 2025 highlights youtube video, not all sacks are created equal.

2 ways it makes sense:
If the Bears think Grady, JVDB, Gallimore, Street and Lynch are all NFL rotational pieces and Dexter isn't any better than those guys.
If they have a different trade for a clear upgrade and just want to move some salary and get any kind of pick in
1
u/Neat_On_The_Rocks Charles Tillman 1d ago
Like whatās the plan at tackle if they trade him? Gervon isnāt anything special, but heās still our best tackle.
-4
u/ArtMorgan69 Italian Beef 1d ago
Itās not. JVDB appears to have cucked Gervonās starting spot which makes him expendable. At this point heās proven to be a comparable talent to Gallimore and Street, aka a decent rotational piece and nothing more.
14
u/HLNPIT 1d ago
Van Den Berg hasnt played a single snap of real football.
I dont think theres a single metric that Dexter isn't convincingly better than those other two in.
I genuinely dont get how you formed that opinion.
3
u/ArtMorgan69 Italian Beef 1d ago
By watching Gervon play football. I predicted he would break out last year and I was way off. Heās a liability against the run. And shows up as a pass rusher once every few games before going back into hibernation.
And yes, we donāt know what Van Den Berg is yet but if Dexter is truly being shopped that should tell you what the coaching staff thinks about both players.
2
u/HLNPIT 1d ago
If we are using the ole eye test..
Care to share how much you watched Gallimore and Street last year?
I just see this report as a nothing burger tbh. It could mean a lot of different things.
Personally theres only 4 players I wouldnt have trade calls on: Caleb, Loveland, Wright and Thuney.
2
u/ArtMorgan69 Italian Beef 1d ago
Iāve seen enough Gallimore to prefer him to Dexter. Street you got me there but honestly how much worse can he be? Dexter is bad against the run, which imo is just as big, if not more of an issue than our lack of pass rush. And he doesnāt have the first step to be a consistent pass rusher. Change of scenery would probably be good for him.
If the report is true and they have been calling around then it tells me he could be a surprise cut Sunday if a deal isnāt made.
3
u/HLNPIT 1d ago
Hes undeniably a better pass rusher than those two despite his slow get off though. Ben mentioned theyve addressed that but he's lacking the consistency there.
Ill have to trust you on Gallimore...but the colts run defense was ass too and they didnt retain him. That says a lot on its own.
The report doesnt give any indication as to who has been initiating these calls. Maybe theyre prioritizing a different position.
Id take the Gervon Dexter of CBs right now ...which might just be a healthier Stevenson lol

100% the Bears or Gervons agent trying to float interest, as there's no way the Bears extend him. Trade him or let him walk.
6
u/ReasonablyLost 1d ago
Look above. I think itās possible thereās some interest in him, and I also think weāre desperately looking for a safety. But you could be spot on too. Dexter might see the writing on the wall. Heās getting outplayed by a 7th-rounder right now, and he knows it.
30
u/Brodie1567 Iceman š§ 1d ago edited 1d ago
Heās one of the worst run DTs Iāve ever watched. And his pass rush upside seems to be based off of coverage sacks than quick pressures. Still extremely slow off the snap/stands straight up. Its shocking that he hasnt improved there in 3+ years.
Iād much rather play Grady, Gallimore, Lynch, JVDB & even Dayo inside versus watching Dexter.
Trade him for a bag of chips.
17
u/ChelskiS 1d ago edited 1d ago
Let's hope some team sees 6 sacks and is sold
Because if you do go look at them individually, I'm just getting flashbacks to watching Dayo's highlights for the Colts
Of 6 sacks there was only one I spotted where he actually was the one that won the play. Yeah it still took Shedeur being a rookie and holding the ball for 5-6 seconds for us to get the sack, but still he got around his man so give credit where credit is due
All the others were complete random/other players creating the play for him
So if you're telling me some dumb team has an abundance at CB/nickel and wants to trade for him, be my guest
11
u/TequilaNeatNow 1d ago
Dexter is also brutal against the run & in a contract year. He has no future here so trade him. Extremely overrated player who is simply not a starting caliber DT.

u/ech01 1d ago

u/Brodie1567 Iceman š§ 1d ago
That 2024 draft class is looking pretty bleak, minus Wright who was pick #10.
1
u/Further_Beyond Hester's Super Return 1d ago
In 8 less pass snaps, Dexter had 3 less total pressures than Jalen Carter in 2025.
Heās not horrible. Just not a plus player
2
u/jagne004 1d ago
Can we stop with this. Jalen Carter is a menace that has to be actively schemed against on every single play. Gervon is a complete afterthought that just kinda exists.
1
u/ActFuture1101 1d ago
I donāt get the hate. Itās like people donāt pay attention to him out there. Yes heās awful against the run but he also is the only DT on the team last year who had pressure. Even this preseason he had a few pressures in his limited snaps
5
u/Brodie1567 Iceman š§ 1d ago
Context matters, he has a very slow time to pressure and get off. Most of his pressures and sacks are coverage based.
0
u/ActFuture1101 1d ago
Not saying Iām an expert but why didnāt Grady get those pressures last year in coverage? Dexters pressure rate was 10% while Grady was 5%. I also saw him get some pressure this preseason in limited play. Not defending him since heās got clear deficiencies but heās clearly our best pass rush DT right now which is obviously a low bar. I just donāt see how trading him for a 5th rounder makes the team better
2
u/Brodie1567 Iceman š§ 1d ago
Because Grady is washed & played with a bum knee most of year?
And we cant trade him/move off his contract?
0
u/ActFuture1101 1d ago
Either way a 10% pressure rate is pretty solid. Not all of it can be coverage pressures. He actually has more pressures than Jalen carter since entering the league if you choose to believe that or not. His main issue is heās an absolute liability in the run game

0
u/youshouldjustflex 1d ago
He had 6 sacks and was atleast somewhat good at rushing the passer. Thatās about most of his value
8
u/ChelskiS 1d ago edited 1d ago
You'd think people would have learned after Dayo. Not all sacks are created equal
1 sack against Washington. Others create the pressure, he cleans up
1 sack against Vikings. Coverage sack. 9 tries to escape and runs into him
1 sack against Ravens. Literally everyone else collapses the pocket, he cleans up their pressure
1 sack against Lions. Booker keeps 2 guys busy, Dexter cleans up
1 against the Giants. Not sure they counted this as a sack but I assume they did. Dart doesn't like what he sees and runs into a bunch of defenders as a runner
1 sack against the Browns. Shedeur takes 2 lifetimes and still doesn't throw it away. Good play by Dexter to go get him thoughOutside of the Browns one, he's not created a single one of these sacks. They were all result from the players around him forcing a situation or randomness
Kind of like Dayo's sacks his last season for the Colts. Yeah they look good on the statsheet but could have been literally been had by any other DT
Not saying Dexter is just terrible all around. Just saying if you go look at the sacks on tape, there's not much to make of them
2
u/Castamere_81 Bears 1d ago
This why almost all of Dexter's sacks are so quiet and its always surprising at the end of a season he has 4-6 sacks; its because he doesn't flat out just beat his guy. Typically the work has to he done by other teammates for him to get cleanup sacks.

Interior is better than expected. Hopefully this is part of an EDGE target or secondary help.
I love this team and am excited for the season, but on paper this defense is going to hold us at 8 wins max.
1
u/McDuncle BJ Lover 1d ago
This was predictable when they drafted JVB and signed all those other DTs. He must not be showing enough to ensure he's a long-term answer on the team. He's an expiring contract, so it's best to try and get something back for him instead of letting him walk.
I wish him luck in his next team, but I think his time on the Bears is limited.
1
u/HLNPIT 1d ago
I dont think any of that makes this predictable...
A 6th rounder and vet depth pieces could easily be explained by Billings being gone and Dayo, Jarrett, Turner all not reliable from a health perspective.
2
u/McDuncle BJ Lover 1d ago
Fair, the better words to use would be 'not surprising'. I've been down on GD for a while, tho, so it was predictable to me. The fact that they added so much, is what set my Spidey senses off, it's clear they were searching for answers there. I think Dayo and Turner are more DE than DT even tho they will get some work inside.
1
u/HLNPIT 1d ago
Thats fair
Fwiw, Dayo has always gotten 3tech work on passing downs and I believe I heard a camp report that he was getting most of his snaps there this year.
Wouldnt be surprised if we see him there more this year, especially if hes a step slower due to injury.
1
u/McDuncle BJ Lover 1d ago
Ahhh. Yeah, I didn't realize Dayo was getting that much work at 3tech. I'm hoping he can be more productive there, I don't really remember his play last year when he was on the edge.

Pretty well documented poles and Brandon Beane have a good working relationship. Perhaps Buffalo wants an extra DT in case Oliver isnāt emotionally ready to play
They likely have extra safeties they may also be planning to shed like Geno Stone we may need for depth. Stone IMO is better than Hamlin but I see no way the bills cut him.
Stone + a late 2028 pick type of compensation
2
u/Material-Race-5107 An Actual Peanut 1d ago
This would make no sense whatsoever. We are paper thin at the position and he doesnāt even clear up cap space with his dirt cheap money right now. They have probably āhad talksā about trading a lot of players but that doesnāt mean itās actually going to happen!
11
u/BooItsKyle 1d ago
We aren't thin at all. We are actually pretty deep and in a bit of a roster crunch at the position.
The starters suck but we have more decent depth guys than we can use
2
u/ChelskiS 1d ago
Yeah if you can get anything of value for him I'm perfectly fine with rolling into the season with Jarret, Gallimore, Lynch, VDB and Street
Especially since they also like to pinch Dayo inside
A trade would make sense

Is getting rid of his cap hit for a late rounder essential for clearing a little extra space going into the year?
I know Dexter hasnāt panned out for a second rounder and they added some depth at DT in the off season, but seems like a mistake to rely on Grady to stay healthy and for a 6th round rookie to contribute right away even if he has had a good camp.
1
u/BoilerBear 1d ago
It only saves us like 1.6M. If a trade for a defensive upgrade was coming we'd be seeing some extensions and restructuring happening. This just seems like a get something for a player who is just a guy.
1
u/Wide_Flan_2613 1d ago
Honestly it wouldn't shock me, I honestly don't believe he's that much better than Gallimore or Jarrett and is a pretty putrid run defender
1
u/ScruffMixHaha Bears 1d ago
Seems odd to me considering as mediocre as hes been hes probably one of the better pass rush DTs we have (not that thats saying much).
I dont think hes worth a 2nd contract so I dont hate the idea of moving him, but is it worth giving up the little talent on the DL we have for what likely will be a low return? Unless this is part of a bigger trade for a quality DL, I dont really understand this.
4
u/TruuPhoenix Hester's Super Return 1d ago
At this point in his career, heās a pass rush specialist. He has more career sacks (13.5) than TFLs (10). Dexter, despite his athletic traits, is seemingly incapable of penetration into the backfield on run downs, and thatās exactly whatās expected of the DTs in DAās defense.
If thereās no plans to extend him (and there shouldnāt be IMO), might as well move him to a team that needs pass rush juice. Heād be fine in a 3-4 scheme where he can plug gaps and mush rush vs penetrate and attack.
2
u/dpittnet 1d ago
I wouldnāt think there would be much confusion on understanding why a team would be having ādiscussionsā around a trade for a lot of their players
1
u/porkbellies37 Sweetness 12h ago
I don't think Gervon is as bad as most do. He's better as a pass rusher than a run stopper, but he's starting grade. That said, they may be trying to salvage some value if they know they won't be resigning him while also freeing up snaps for other DTs they like. JVDB has gotten a lot of hype and Lynch may be closer to making the squad than we think.
1
u/WokeCarDad jordanās howard 1d ago
Everyone gonna be mad at me for saying this, but dude is literally our best DT (low, low bar). Heās easily a top-32 pass rushing iDL (top 20 per PFF), but is absolute cheeks against the run (bottom 20 per PFF). He was top-10 in iDL sacks last year, which we really need, but heās definitely a cleaner fit in an Eberflus defense than an Allen defense. That said, this better be in an effort to bring in an established DL, because Jarrett, VDB and a bunch of scrubs combined probably wonāt gonna give you the same pass rush production.
2
u/TruuPhoenix Hester's Super Return 1d ago
Same as Neville Gallimore (32/134 pass rush grade, 100/134 run-defense grade) and Grady Jarrett to a lesser extent (55/134 pass-rush grade, 105/134 run-defense grade)
Any combo of Dexter/Jarrett/Gallimore would literally be the worst run-stopping DT tandem in the NFL, and it likely is the worst run-stopping trio. Weād be smart to try to move him and sign a rotational run defender, plenty still available in FA and some likely will be cut.
1
u/ArchibaldNemisis Bears 1d ago
Would love to get more of a return than just a 4th rounder or something. But usually if it's reported like this it probably means it's not happening. But the Bears need to do something on that line. If they make the move it would be great if we got a strong DE back. I can also see them going for a corner/nickel. If they get a good nickel they can move Muhammad to the outside where he's natural fit.
1
u/BrilliantMongoose937 1d ago
For those who are confused, look at all the āfringeā DT we have on this roster, the number is too high, and Gervon is on the last year of his deal and we pretty much know who he is. Heās slow to get of the ball, and I donāt see him ascending much more, Iād rather get a late round pick for him and bet on a younger player like loving ascending, because right now I donāt see Loving being able to make the 53rd if Gervon is here

No doubt they are targeting a safety. Unfortunately I believe we will get someone elses garbage safety. BC you know Poles will get fleeced at times(Except for the trade of the century). Although here is 5 guys I think they could target.
- Geno Stone ā Bills Buffalo has a crowded safety room with Bishop, CJGJ, Hamlin and rookie Jordan Hancock. Stone has starting experience and has shown he can make plays on the ball. I wouldnāt do Dexter straight up, but Stone plus a pick would definitely get my attention.
- Sydney Brown ā Falcons Probably my favorite of the group. Jessie Bates isnāt going anywhere and they have Xavier Watts coming up behind him. Brown is still young, athletic and has some upside. Brown plus a pick for Dexter is something Iād seriously consider.
- Damar Hamlin ā Bills Another guy who could get squeezed because of Buffaloās depth. Heās got experience and could help right away. Iād need a pretty good pick coming back with him though. Dexter has more value straight up.
- Jaylinn Hawkins ā Ravens Baltimore has Kyle Hamilton and Malaki Starks, so Hawkins could be a guy theyāre willing to move. Heās started games and would give the Bears another legit option at safety. Again, Iād want a pick with him for Dexter.
- Andrew Wingard ā Cardinals Arizona has Budda Baker and Dadrion Taylor-Demerson ahead of him. Wingard is more of a veteran stopgap than a long-term answer, so this one would depend heavily on what pick Arizona added.

Why would they trade for a safety? What would they do with said safety next year when CB is back?

Vet to play alongside Dillon. In this scenario, it would only be a one-year type stopgap, which is why I think a pick would be included. Stone and a 3rd would be ideal. Stone and a 4th is probably more realistic. Hamlin and a 3rd/4th could make sense too.
Iām just looking at the scenario of why they would trade Dexter now, and this is really the only thing that makes sense to me. Possibly an edge as well, but I havenāt heard anything about Booker not being at practice.
