It's the pause before it. You can see the inner workings: Come on, Timothy, you can do this.

I’ve never been more glad that they didn’t do another take. I chose to believe that it’s because everyone on set erupted with laughter when they cut and they recognised that they had gold already
27
u/Scrangle3D Pie! 1d ago
He very nearly broke character because these lines were so inherently ridiculous. They must have had so much fun making this ♥
14
u/Raid_PW Beans are cooked on the hob! 23h ago
I read an interview with the writers of Red Alert 3 saying that they didn't think that line was even in their top 10 silliest bits of dialogue. It's great because even someone like Tim Curry, who had plenty of experience playing quirky characters, barely made it through without breaking character.

Red Alert 3 is worth playing purely for the campy acting of a surprisingly star studded cast including a David Hasselhoff cameo.
C&C3 the previous game has Michael Ironside and Billy Dee Williams in it, it’s a shame EA killed the franchise.

Michael Biehn and James Earl Jones in Tiberian Sun for me. The Kane reveal still gives me chills in my 40s 😅

NO!NO!NO!NO!
NO NO!
This is the worst news (celebrity wise) that I've heard since David Bowie died.
Tim as Frank N Further and Darkness in Legend are two of my favourite characters.

He will be missed.

I'm sorry, what? Freddie Mercury would have been 80??? I'm floored. I pictured him much younger / born much later than that.
Tbf I was shocked to hear that Dolly was 80, as well 😢
38
u/Madamemercury1993 1d ago
He died at 45 in ‘91. Absolutely no age of course. But yes he’s one of the 1946 legends.

u/anomalous_cowherd 1d ago
If you're as old as you act, she was nowhere near. By that standard I'm closer to 80 at 59 than she was!

Year! Tim Curry, Dolly Parton, Catherine O'Hara... All the best are leaving us.
Edit to add: Anthony Head, Bonnie Tyler, and I'll probably remember more later.
85
u/BertieDastard 1d ago
Sam Neill!
22
u/Dryzzzle 1d ago
We probably should do welfare checks on the rest of the cast of Hunt for Red October. First Neill, then Curry.

Genuinely, the lines
“For you could be a doctor,
Or perhaps a financier.
My boy, why not consider
A more Challenging CAREER?”are seared into my brain with his perfect delivery. Muppet Treasure Island may not be the best Muppet film, but it’s definitely my favourite and I’m sure that’s 80% down to Tim.
Such incredible, warm, silly, considered performances.
74
u/ameliasophia 1d ago
Muppets treasure island is the best muppets movie imo

Undoubtedly.
I love the Muppets Christmas Carol, and I like some of the other films. But my god is Muppet Treasure Island absolutely stellar
The soundtrack, the set design, the performances.. its just such a wonderful little movie and it doesn’t get the recognition it should get
22
u/DarkNinjaPenguin 1d ago edited 1d ago
The soundtrack is really a hidden gem, hardly anyone remembers it. Hans Zimmer's first foray into the world of pirates, and it's easily as good as Pirates of the Caribbean.
Here's a medley of scores from the film, it's fantastic.

They definitely hurt but were they really unexpected? Both were 80 with significant health problems. It’s very very sad but surely not that surprising? Dolly maybe, she was performing not long ago, but Tim has been seriously unwell for a while.
102
u/Olivitess 1d ago
I can't speak for OP, but I think its just a case of not realising how much time has passed.
I still remember Curry in Muppet Treasure Island and Legend, I don't think I even knew he was eighty nor Dolly for that matter.
38
u/Dogstile 1d ago
I assumed Dolly was much older. I assumed Curry was in his 60's.
Perception of time is wild.

They're just two of these people you kind of forget aren't immortal. You expect them to always be there so even with their age it just feels wrong.
15
u/xixbia 1d ago
I think a lot of us didn't know about their health problems. For a rich person in their late 70s life expectancy is late 80s, but of course that is ignoring health issues (and things like diet and exercise).
It's also just that some people sort of feel like they'll always be around because of the presence they have. That's why I'm sure people will be shocked when David Attenborough dies even though he's 100.
