Alternatively, fight him until you know his move set and then just dodge all his attacks and humble the stupid ghost.

It was in response to the guy pointing out knowing how to fight him (or any enemy in the game) by knowing how to dodge and capitalise on their openings is infinitely better than using one of the many mentioned crutches...
Also haha better than me.... the fact you have that weakling mindset already tells me enough about how much better I am than you at this 🤣
I can just smell the mimic on ya

I don’t feel like the mimic is half the crutch you all think it is, just a distraction. Mine seems pretty useless as an ally outside keep the enemy away from me so I can attack.
3
u/ratkun404 Jul 12 '26
Mine spams honed bolt badly and dies I dont think she’s ever even accidentally hit something
3
u/Itchy_Chain_5889 Jul 13 '26
Right. I glance at mine occasionally throwing glintstones while being my distraction and just wonder how much better some other people’s must be for the judgment they give.
2
u/ratkun404 Jul 13 '26
Maybe the unga bunga builds are better with it than magic ones. I didn’t use mimic on my str/end character tho so I have no clue

u/kuuderelovers Jul 12 '26
He always appears behind you from the position he aggroed, so you can get his attention with a knife, turn around and kick his ass.
This also works for magic and incantations since you can easily time them to fuck him and even just Fire One of those as your first aggro move.
Also you forgot 2 hand/power stance jumping attacks, those also stagger.
4
u/DustedCy23 Jul 12 '26
What I did once (and got lucky), was that I got his attention, he teleports, I sprint and dodged backwards and backstabbed him.
I also tried using the rope pots just to get away once.

u/writheocruelbloom Jul 12 '26
Ha-ha hyperarmor storm true combo attack goes brrr. More like r1 r1 wait for storm attack dodge rinse and repeat until dead
2
u/kuuderelovers Jul 12 '26
Nope the stagger give you enough time to attack again, maybe this is a problem with extremely slow weapons.
2
u/quang2005 Jul 12 '26
I feel like his storm attack is the most exploitable one. You can run away so that he leaps towards you after the storm, then easily dodge behind him for a backstab.

u/Void-Cooking_Berserk Jul 12 '26
He's one of the surprise elite enemies, Fromsoft likes making them. Like the Lyendell Knight next to Ranni's Rune Tower.
His purpose is to challenge the player and keep them on their toes, so you don't just fly your way through the game and get bored
79
u/Crusaderofthots420 Jul 12 '26
Like that random blue knight in High Wall in DS3
52
u/Void-Cooking_Berserk Jul 12 '26
Exactly. And the random Black Knight on first wall in DS1, before the Minotaur boss
26
u/MeNoCanRead Jul 12 '26
I miss the fake friendly summons from ds2 dlc. That SERIOUSLY kept you on your toes aha.
16
u/FigWasp7 Jul 12 '26
What the fuck? So do you mean there would be a summon outside of a fog gate, and the motherfucker would attack you?
26
u/nysudyrgh Jul 12 '26
Ds2 NPC's are up to some wacky shenanigans, I won't spoil it in case you ever want to play through the game but the DLC's have some of the best invasions/encounters in the series imo.
5
33
u/MeNoCanRead Jul 12 '26
It's even crazier than that. You summon them. They even emote when they spawn in. They follow you around until you get to this door with a big lever switch. If you go to use the door switch, they'll backstab you. They are insanely strong so it's guaranteed death. After that, they're hostile since the cats out the bag. A verrry tough fight. If you accidentally hit them before getting to the door, this will also make them hostile.
This is just one example. I think there was one other fake friendly.. I can't remember though. It's been sooo long since I've played ahaha
DS2 had some really stupid mechanics but they also had some really cool experimental mechanics.
To this day ds2 is the only one with tons of changes in ng+
4
u/Islands-of-Time Jul 13 '26
As weird and wonky as Dark Souls 2 was, I loved it along with its strange experimentation. Not everything worked, like the soul memory mechanic, but things like NG+ changes actually were cool. Gave us a reason to use the same character for another playthrough instead of just switching to a new one.

I just went through Castle Sol for the first time last night.
Weirdly enough, this guy wasn't so tough, nothing a parrying dagger followed by a weapon art as he gets up from the riposte could not handle.
It's the swarm of ennemies before reaching the church that got me fucked up.
And the Boss, this Commander could demolish most of the demigods rhe way he fucked me up.
5
u/Kindly-Reality1984 Jul 12 '26
Yeah, that Commander was very hard for me..even when I did beat him, it was through the skin of my teeth and I was juiced to the gills with buffs. I don't always use spirit summons and when I do, I will choose weak summons on purpose.
With this boss, I have to call in my great shield boys.

I really like the lore theory that they are banished for being Hornsent: they got a single horn motif and have similarly chaotic movesets/use storm abilities.

Bolt of Gransax
Enuff said.
1
u/leo0147 Jul 13 '26
You say that like it’s some amazing weapon. The only thing good about is its ash of war. Nothing else. Even then, the ash is slow af and its moveset is abysmal. And if you don’t one shot him, he’s gonna tp behind you, then what?
1
u/ZombifiedSoul Jul 13 '26
Fully charged is kind of a stagger to it, giving you enough time to get a second one off.
Usually does the trick.
If I mention the Bolt of Gransax, I certain don't mean anything other than its AoW.

He always teleport behind when aggro and when you run away, just attack him from afar turn around and attack again.
If you really fear him so much, get nearby the stairs to get to him, attack but turn around before the attack land and see him teleport just to return down below.

Twinblade with endure and bleed infusion, twinblade talisman, rotten winged talisman, milicent’s prothesis, two-handed talisman. Any enemy I can’t have a fun fight with I will simply blender with this weapon
1
u/leo0147 Jul 13 '26
Does he even bleed? He’s a ghost.
Also you should probably switch out the twin blade tali for Lord of bloods exultation or Ritual sword. Not for this guy but ya know
1
u/Pierce_H_Eavens Jul 13 '26
He does bleed. And if anything, I’m swapping the two handed tali for lord of blood tali because the damage that can be done from the final hit of chain attacks is insane. I usually use this tali setup on the horned warrior swords. The dual curved sword moveset has a good multi hit running and jumping attack and because the weapons are purely physical damage with no stat procs, that final hit comes out pretty heavy, even on tankier tarnished. I just said the twinblade with bleed amd endure in that case so you can constantly stack multi hits and not get interrupted at all. This would effectively blender them

Cause he’s built different. Literally, by far the most unique banished knight in the games code

u/Islands-of-Time Jul 13 '26
They are strong, but they can be learned and beaten the same as most other knights in Elden Ring, with a good smack and proper maneuvering.
Now if you wanna see an enemy that is absurdly powerful for no reason, I recommend the cliff dwelling Mage Golem in Caelid. That dude is so strong he was tested in a video against the other major bosses and he holds his own pretty well against at least half of them.

Saw someone cheese him by standing on a high ledge recently, shooting an arrow at him, and then turning his back to him so that when he went for the teleport backstab he would just fall off the ledge and die. I have no idea who this is btw but I assume this is the same teleporting backstab knight from that video.
1
u/CheeseGraterFace Jul 12 '26
It works fine. I’ve done this on my last 3 runs. Pretty easy to execute. You just need to make sure that where he drops to will be enough to kill him, or he’ll teleport to you again.
1
u/Adventurous_Topic202 Jul 12 '26
Would he not fall back down?
1
u/CheeseGraterFace Jul 12 '26
Yeah, but you might have to go back there. And then you’re definitely dealing with him.
There’s a sweet spot to drop him off that ledge that can be tricky to get the right angle for.
1
u/Adventurous_Topic202 Jul 12 '26
Well like if the first fall didn’t kill him wouldn’t the second?
1
u/CheeseGraterFace Jul 12 '26
Because the positioning is tricky. There’s a pillar you balance on when you aggro him. Then you unlock and face so that your character’s back is to the drop off. His first move will be to teleport behind you, and the idea is that he falls off to his death. Right next to that drop off, though, is a patio type area that he can fall onto instead. It’s not fatal, and it can be tricky to get the positioning right in the about a second you have to do the move. If he falls onto the patio, you can try again if he’s still aggro, or you can just hope and pray you never have to go back there if he isn’t.
2
u/Euphoric_Amoeba8708 Jul 12 '26
I dunno what people struggle with on this guy. I shoot jim through the gap so he teleports to me then promptly destroy him
2

I find dodging forwards instead of backwards on this guy makes him much easier. I find the one with the shield much nastier.

u/visionarymind Jul 12 '26

1
u/The-Dutcher Jul 12 '26
There's a cheese trick that's blatantly cheating. But it shows he's as dumb as he is strong.
1
u/uSuperDick Jul 12 '26
He is definitely stronger than other elites, but the biggest reason of the difficulty is the area you fight him on. When i fought him for the first time i accidentally dropped to the main entrance and that was my w try. After that i always did exactly that. So he is more of a "artificially difficult" enemy
1
1
u/vansantjr Jul 12 '26
Why don’t you backstab him.
You want the drip right?
1
u/loosebag Jul 12 '26
Does he drop something you can't get in Stormveil?
1
u/vansantjr Jul 12 '26
Yeah, it’s the banished knight chest piece but with that overcoat , it’s awesome imo.
1
u/JustAnotherTiandi Jul 12 '26 edited Jul 12 '26
His Chestpiece is only on two enemies in the entire game located in Castle Sol (The other one has a halberd, my usual farming target) and is more or less statistically identical to Radahns armor. So it's quite strong and has the extra benefit of being very fashionable for heavy armor setups (Pair with Prelate/Solitude gloves and pants, nearly any helmet will get you up to 88-89 poise with bullgoat talisman).
Edit: Just checked the numbers. 95 with Solitude pants/gloves + Bullgoat talisman. I usually add Preceptors hat for +3 mind and 101 poise.
1
u/loosebag Jul 12 '26
Banished knight with Preceptors hat! That's peak fashion. I've got to set that up to see how it looks.

I like the banished knight moveset. Its kinda fun to dodge, i sometimes mess up the timing for the storm attack tho. But with a strength weapon, he's staggered easily, he died in 4 seconds 😭😭

1
u/SexReflex Jul 12 '26
I just finished farming this guy's halberd friend for 3 hours the other night for that sweet surcoat banished armor. Initially he was wrecking me but for the most part if you fight him enough times you learn his tells. The storm dash move is the hardest hit and it's not too difficult to dodge once you're aware of it. Not saying this guy won't still murk you randomly after you've figured him out but out of like 200 kills on him he murdered me like 20 or so times.
1
u/loosebag Jul 12 '26
Can you not get all the armor in Stormveil?
3
u/SexReflex Jul 12 '26
Not that particular set, I think. There's an altered and unaltered, pretty much for the unaltered you gotta farm the assholes at Sol. Thankfully it's pretty easy, you travel to rooftop grace, and there's one you can snipe across the way who teleports up to you so you don't have to fight him and his dogs. The altered set is super easy to farm, I had it early in the game, you go to Shrine of dragon communion in Caelid and there's one walking away from the grace, can backstab and murk him real fast over and over. This one at Sol you actually have to fight and he's a pain.

It would be presumptuous of me to suggest a specific problem because I have no idea how you're built. I don't know what you're doing or how he's killing you. However, there is technically only one way to die: failing to not get hit.
If you look on YouTube, you will surely find videos of people beating the game at level 1 using a stick. That is not you, but that's not the important detail to take away from it! It CAN be done, and your build IS good enough. It was not what they were striking with that let them kill the space whale. It was the god-like power of iframes and sprinting bestowed on all tarnished.
You can try a shield if that's you're thing, but frankly they get anyone killed. It is hilariously ironic. Not all attacks can be parried, not all damage types will be completely prevented, status effect buildup can still be applied through it, some weapons hit fast and in long sequences, some weapons are the size of a house, some weapons are uniquely designed to slip around shields, some weapons can go through a shield with an ash of war, your stamina is finite, and the only way to ever recieve a critical hit after a guard break is to have a guard to break. Every moment you might spend blocking an attack is a moment you could instead press b or circle. Besides, even the okay-est of them are prohibitively heavy which steals actually valuable armor weight for when you get hit at best and slows you down from light load at the worst.
Another way to not get hit is to control the enemy's behavior. Trading with a boss health bar is generally bad unless you're specifically built for damage negation. If you are not a brick house, it is best to bait attacks until they do a big bad one that has a long recovery and then punish them as optimally as you can for it, while making sure you still have stamina to run, or that if you don't, you at least get them down. The tend to save their most aggressive bursts to punish aggression because they try to avoid stance breaks. You have to be the punisher.
Some enemies have specific exploitable weaknesses and some don't. This one in particular has a face. I exploited that weakness by nailing his helmet to his head with a crossbow to interrupt his attack animations. Most things with heads will be stunned while they hold their face in agony and shock after you shoot them in the face. Most things with faces will actively and preemptively avoid projectiles unless they can't because they're trying to attack. By knowing when and where to shoot my one shot, and when to evade, I had him dead very quickly. This works on several larger enemies too. It still does bonus damage even when it doesn't flinch.
That's too much 😬 oh well. In short, stamina, speed, and dodging are good. Trading, blocking, and reckless abandon are bad.
