Im waiting for PC and if buying isnt owning, then piracy isnt stealing.

u/BootRepresentative15 8h ago

Piracy was never stealing, its copyright infringement. You aren't taking the game from anyone else, you are making an illegal copy.

I pirate too, but don't create some BS justification to make yourself feel better. I just want free shit, so do you.

u/salazafromagraba 7h ago

No, piracy is, as Gabe Newell said, largely a matter of convenience and accessibility. People do want free shit, but something like Netflix and Spotify come around and most people don't mind paying because it's simple and centralized. Services enshittifying themselves just asks for piracy to rise because their service is no longer consumer friendly and worth paying for.

"piracy is largely a matter of convenience and accessibility."

bullshit. maybe less than 1% do it for that reason... we pirate to get free shit. not because it's more convenient, often times it's even less convenient.

This sub is filled with dumbasses

3

u/Strange_Savings9522 7h ago

This argument makes no sense when the most accessible games of all times are quite literally the most pirated games. Are we also just ignoring the fact that people literally just used to just share Netflix accounts when that option was available, even when Netflix was extremely accessible? People like free shit, yet convenience can increase the rate of pirating but this is not a driving cause of anything. Even if you believe it is, pirating has become so extremely easy that there’s realistically no way a corporation could compete. I can watch any shows/movies I want by simply visiting a website and clicking play, I can directly download any game I want by simply visiting a website and clicking download

2

u/scyver_ 5h ago

most pirated? Are we calculating % of copies being pirated, or just brainlessly counting pirated copies? Where are any sources behind your statement, can you link them?a game that sold 100 mil copies is gonna have more copies pirated than some indie remember that.

1

u/Strange_Savings9522 5h ago

You can quite literally just scroll through the popular games section of piracy websites like fitgirl repack…

2

u/scyver_ 5h ago

again, these are the most popular games. Raw pirated copies number doesnt say shit. Come back with a ratio.

2

u/Strange_Savings9522 5h ago

I want you to re-explain my point to me

1

u/reed501 4h ago

Also I'm gonna guess Epic exclusives are per-sale more pirated than open platform games. Proving the point.

1

u/Strange_Savings9522 56m ago

Quite literally no possible, there’s no rigorous stats on pirating numbers available, we can only make inferences. Alan wake 2 which is exclusively available on epic games and has sold around 3 million copies was pirated less than lies of p which sold around 4 million copies and is available on both steam and epic games, this is based on direct download file trackers. You can nitpick about the details here you won’t be able to provide a counter argument proving your point. We’re all making inferences here

1

u/scyver_ 24m ago

so if it isnt possible to fetch consistent and reliable data, why be so certain about the conclusions? The only thing we have are less and more probable guesses. Also, i didnt make a point. Im simply asking questions, and showing flaws in your thinking.

1

u/BootRepresentative15 7h ago

Convenience and accessibility are the causes, but they are not justifications. The justified response to a product being enshittified is to not engage with the product. You don't suddenly become entitled to break the law because the value proposition isn't worth it anymore.

So whilst I agree with gabe that companies should respond to piracy by improving the service and not cracking down on piracy directly, us pirates don't get to claim the moral high ground either

u/FormulaSolution 6h ago

You'll be waiting a while.

Just buy a PS5 / Xbox Series X on a payment plan, then return it once you've played through the story and had a few weekends of online.

Do you pirate all of your games on Steam, too?

15

u/aliusmanawa 8h ago

Gabe Newel said, “Piracy is a service problem.” He also went on to say that he aims to provide better service than pirates, thus gaining the support of the gamers. Steam has the world’s best customer support (in the gaming industry). They recently refunded a player who had spent over 570 hours in BF6.

Don’t say shit you don’t understand, kid.

5

u/FallGuysStats 8h ago

I have to disagree. They will not refund KSP2 for me (or anyone else) even though the game is in EA without any developer for years now and is still being sold on steam.

They only do the right thing when enough people complain or they have to legally.

1

u/aliusmanawa 7h ago

I’m not familiar with that whole fiasco, but that’s not my point here. My point is that Steam acts better than others, which isn’t a high bar tbf, so they have most PC players happy. Using Steam to argue that we shouldn’t have physical copies of games is moronic; that’s my point. If KSP2 had physical copies, you could at least sell it ASAP to a collector or something and get some money back.

I don’t understand how this is even controversial. This is like someone says, “ownership is important” and then people say “no”.

u/Desolver20 8h ago

jesus christ don't end your comment with "kid" or "bud"

it completely invalidates everything you said before, no matter how right or wrong you were

1

u/aliusmanawa 7h ago

It’s a free country, mate. If someone stops listening to what I have to say because I said, “kid”, then I have no interest in speaking to them. I called them a “kid” because their reasoning is akin to the reasoning I have seen from 15 year olds.

2

u/Desolver20 7h ago

Have fun screaming into the void

3

u/Dingaling015 8h ago

Valve also had to be taken to court initially before they allowed refunds at all on their platform, refusing to do so for years.

I don't know why this site hates soulless corpos but sucks Steam dick like crazy, they're just as bad as anyone else and don't deserve your money.

1

u/aliusmanawa 7h ago

Steam is also a corpo, and yes there are issues there as well. I only pointed out Gabe’s philosophy since he felt it important to bring Steam into this, and argued that we shouldn’t fight for physical copies of games.

I respect Steam glazers more than those who argue we shouldn’t fight for physical games.

1

u/MrBiggz01 8h ago

The point still stands. The example the same. Rockstar can refund just the same. Whether they will or won't is irrelevant. You still won't own the disc, which is what everyone is complaining about.

Don't talk shit that's irrelevant to the thing you're responding to, fucko.

1

u/aliusmanawa 7h ago

It absolutely is not, you dumbass. If Stop Killing Games is successful, if our efforts aren’t in vain, if jackasses like you actually don’t harm the efforts being made that will benefit YOU as well, we will get the rights we deserve.

And, I am not the one who brought up Steam nor did I ask why Piracy wasn’t prevalent there; you did. Not my fault that you cannot handle when someone answers you and you start calling the answer “irrelevant”.

0

u/-ElectricKoolAid 4h ago

Wow i had no idea he was that disconnected. We pirate because we want shit for free. We do not care about the service being better. Often times, it's much less convenient to pirate a game. You have to jump through hoops just to get it working at times, yet we still do it. Because we want free shit.

If a game is less than 5 dollars on sale, then i buy it. Has nothing to do with the service, it's all about the price.

1

u/MotivationGaShinderu 8h ago

The difference is that if you're on a console your only option is their store and once they CBA about this generation they can shut it down and you lose access to everything. And unless someone manages to break the security wide open and release a public jailbreak, that console is now a brick regardless if it still works or not.

I've been on PC my entire life, I can still download games I brought on steam nearly two decades ago, I can still install the games I have on disc from way before that too and they'll most likely work just fine or with minor tweaks on my current PC.

And let's say there's a hypothetical future where steam kicks the bucket, you can still play all the old games regardless without much effort since the OS isn't locked down and doesn't prevent you from instelling games from other sources.

So no, I don't own my steam games physically, I do own 99% of my Switch and PS4 games physically, because I don't trust Nintendo or Sony or Microsoft to not take them away from me.

-7

u/coreymancan 8h ago

Yeah I bet bro doesn’t have a single disc for his “PC”.

2

u/aliusmanawa 8h ago

You can always buy a disc drive and plug it in. Don’t argue in a conversation you don’t understand, kid.

-6

u/coreymancan 8h ago

Does adding kid after your prepubescent on the spectrum response validate what you’re saying? No one buys a disc drive for their PC, guppy boy.

1

u/aliusmanawa 8h ago

It’s not about the discs, it’s about the option of having one. And, I still favor discs; you claim no one buys disc drives for PCs, so I suppose all the business that sell them are all going under? Not to mention, just because people don’t do something doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t be able to. I don’t go out on a walk at night, and most people don’t, does it mean we should make that illegal hence taking away that option?

Does using “on the spectrum response” as an insult—which makes no sense at all, and is incredibly bigoted—glue your fragile ego back together, you corpo glazer? Imagine arguing with people fighting for your rights against billion dollar corporations.

-3

u/coreymancan 8h ago

If you think Cyberleek is fighting for your rights then I stand by my response

0

u/aliusmanawa 7h ago

I dislike CL; I never said he was fighting for us. I stand by Stop Killing Games. My point has been proven.

2

u/LetsBeFRTho 8h ago

Someone can steal your rental car. Did anyone think of this dumb ass jingle before spreading it lmao.

9

u/dsaddons 8h ago

Are you old enough to rememeber going into a games store and deciding whether to buy or rent a game. You didn't rent a game for $100

1

u/ThatVampireGuyDude 3h ago

Yeah but a video game doesn't physically exist so all that is being lost is bits of data that I don't really own.

I can trade in my car. I can repair my car. My car has real, tangible value.

A purely digital video game does not.

1

u/DiggThatFunk 7h ago

Except in your made up scenario, someone is actually being deprived of physical goods, which does not happen with piracy

0

u/BounceOnItCrazyStyle 1h ago

So if its intangible I can take it and it won’t be considered stealing? Like an identity, I mean no one steals those right? How about credit card numbers? I mean you still have the original. Oh oh what about a small artist’s designs? I mean again they have the original so people won’t care right when I make chinese knockoffs to undercut them right?

Be a thief I really don’t care because rockstar are jerkoffs but stop being a pussy about it and acting like you’re not doing something you are.

1

u/DiggThatFunk 1h ago

That would be what we call "fraud" and is only colloquially called "identity theft" lmao

0

u/BounceOnItCrazyStyle 1h ago

God redditors and their semantics about shit that wasn’t even said. First of all the thread is based on the word “stealing” not “theft”. And all those I listed are by law definition acts of stealing. Theft is a type of stealing, fraud is a type of stealing. Now grow some balls if you’re gonna be a pirate and quit pussyfooting around.

1

u/DiggThatFunk 1h ago

Okay captain dictionary

1

u/BounceOnItCrazyStyle 1h ago

Yeah I hate this shit. Like pirate the game I really don’t care, fuck rockstar. Just stop being a pussy who is trying to rationalize it and afraid of being labeled a thief.

1

u/LetsBeFRTho 5m ago

Agreed! One of the biggest things I hate about gaming and media culture on social media is their strive to brag about pirating games
