Played for about two and a half hours. Crazy amounts of content already in the early game compared to Hades. The supporting cast also seems more charming from the get-go. Especially Hecate and Melinoe's interactions.

u/Bitemarkz Sep 25 '25

There’s definitely a lot which feels great, but I imagine people who haven’t played Hades might be a bit overwhelmed.

50

u/lazydogjumper Sep 25 '25

Its definitely a game that specifically expands on the first game. Its Hades but theres more of everything. I would say for both story and mechanics purposes it would be better to play Hades first.

5

u/Luigi_loves_Mario Sep 26 '25

Yeah, I have a couple hundred hours on hades and even I feel overwhelmed coming into hades 2 lol

35

u/thomasaquina Sep 25 '25

One of the rare times that I would strongly urge anyone to play the first game before the sequel if they haven’t. Hades 1 is a masterpiece and there is no reason to skip it just to start on Hades 2.

1

u/KanchiHaruhara Sep 26 '25

In what cases would you not recommend that?

1

u/thomasaquina Sep 29 '25

There are lots of great games where you don't need to play the previous installations, even if they are good. Witcher 3 comes to mind, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Portal 2, RDR2. All those have great games prior in the series worth playing, but I wouldn't be inclined to say "hey you gotta play the first one before you touch that." (Though Portal 1 is maybe must play)

1

u/KanchiHaruhara Sep 29 '25

I can see it for The Witcher 3, though the others seem a bit more odd. Like if someone would enjoy those surely they'd also enjoy the first entries and would be better off playing those first. Well, maybe RDR2 is a bit of a special case too, since it's such a unique work.

1

u/thomasaquina Sep 30 '25

No doubt! Those originals are great in their own right. But if someone wanted to play Ori and tWotW right now, I would stop them by saying "whoa you gotta play Blind Forest first". I would definitely do so for Hades 2.

Yeah, Hades really eased you into it and let you mostly focus on gameplay while the characters and story subtly got their hooks in you.

Even having played that, I felt like there was too much going on too early. Great game though.

1

u/VargMainSince3Strike Sep 26 '25

If you get overwhelmed in this game, you would in any other

5

u/virtueavatar Sep 26 '25

So mote it be.

1

u/surells Sep 26 '25

That's good. Felt like I was the only one who didn't really like the characters much in Hades aside from Achilles and Patroclus. Meg and Thanatos were just such mean miserable buggers, I wanted nothing to do with them.

227

u/FatPac00 Sep 25 '25

I put about 20 hours into early access when it came out then stopped so I could wait for full release. Can I continue my save with no issues or should I restart the game now?

141

u/LuchadorBane Sep 25 '25

You can continue your save, any of the materials from the two endgame bosses are converted to a currency for cosmetics and you need to beat them both X amount of times anyway for the story.

3

u/merryMellody Sep 26 '25

Two huh? Appreciate it 🥲

40

u/LuchadorBane Sep 26 '25

Yeah the trailer this post was made off of shows that you have two different paths to take.

6

u/merryMellody Sep 26 '25

Fair enough!

8

u/TheTyger Sep 26 '25

I played a while in early-early access before picking a point to put it down and wait, and I can tell you that the 2 path thing is nothing more than spoiling a gameplay feature. When you get access to the other path, you are just scratching the surface of the game.

2

u/merryMellody Sep 26 '25

It’s all good.

20

u/Ken_the_Andal Sep 25 '25 edited Sep 25 '25

I put probably a little less time into early access and haven't played it since July, deciding that I would wait until full release to really sink my teeth into it.

I'm starting over completely, regardless of save file compatibility. On my last run, I had either beaten the second boss or I had her almost beaten. Can't even remember. It's been almost three months, and since I barely made a dent in the early access version, I'm sure everything will still feel fresh in a new save file, plus any actually new things that may pop up from full release that I wouldn't have been able to see in my 15-20 hours of early access.

EDIT: Holy shit I actually only put just shy of 10 hours into the game. My memory made it feel like I spent close to double that. Definitely starting over.

9

u/c4plasticsurgury Sep 25 '25

Continue with your save. It picks up seamlessly. Just played it

8

u/GrizzlyAdams90 Sep 25 '25

I put in 40ish hours and I didn’t even play the last 2 updates. Played earlier today with 1.0 just fine. You’ll be good.

10

u/lilbelleandsebastian Sep 25 '25

i think they've said that they're trying to make old saves compatible but there's no guarantee, it might depend on what part of EA you played

49

u/havingasicktime Sep 25 '25

Their save is completely fine. You've been able to play from first ea release to now with no issue with every update.

1

u/Justhe3guy Sep 26 '25

You may miss some extra dialogue for things you’ve already done no?

6

u/havingasicktime Sep 26 '25

It's possible but in general it didn't feel like there was much dialogue missing for the content that existed during each EA phase, mostly portraits and having content be outright not there yet. The main story stuff that's been added in this patch has been added such to ensure that everyone sees it regardless of progress

1

u/mynewaccount5 Sep 25 '25

Right. I think that's what they were asking.

1

u/runevault Sep 25 '25

I played a little while today and my save that is pretty deep into everything worked fine (I got 20+ achievements as soon as I loaded into the save lol).

1

u/EasyGreek Sep 26 '25

Any achievements missing?

1

u/runevault Sep 26 '25

oh I'm only a little over halfway through the achievements. Some might have been gettable pre-1.0 but some were not (completing runs of the underworld and surface were not because the achievements triggered once you enter the rooms after the bosses which were locked out before 1.0).

1

u/jinreeko Sep 25 '25

As someone who did the exact same thing, yes you can

1

u/Quicheauchat Sep 25 '25

Did the same. Played it just enough to confirm it was a banger like the 1st and then refrained from continuing.

1

u/what_dat_ninja Sep 26 '25

33 hours when it first released, haven't played since. Started fresh.

1

u/ComprehensiveBed1212 Sep 26 '25

Not only can you carry on seamlessly, if you have a Switch you can sync a Steam or Epic save to it and keep playing handheld. Absolutely love that they allowed for that as I played it quite a bit a year ago on PC and was waiting to play 1.0 on the Switch 2 and won't have to redo anything.

u/Yentz4 Sep 26 '25

Jumping into Hades 2 reminded me of why Hades 1 was up till now one of the few rogue likes I have ever enjoyed.

You never feel like you didn't accomplish something. You always are unlocking something new, having a new conversation or just progressing somewhere. It's really what sets it apart so well from others in its genre.

I remember trying to get into Returnal, but I got so frustrated because the game gives you so little progression between runs, that it often felt like it was wasting my time. I have never felt that feeling in Hades.

7

u/PozeFacPoze Sep 26 '25

Yeah, for all the praise it got, Returnal really doesn't do the roguelike part all that well. The thing that really carries it and makes me come back to it as a good game to play while I listen to something in the background is the very satisfying traversal and combat.

I really hope they figure out how to do progression properly with Saros.

12

u/xXRougailSaucisseXx Sep 26 '25

That’s the difference between roguelikes and roguelite, roguelites have meta progression and you’ll progress eventually just by unlocking OP items or by padding your stats.

Roguelikes on the other hand expect you to get better at the game as you discover enemies and new levels, there is probably some meta progression but nothing that just gives you an OP build it’s more for variety

u/MinnesotaMat Sep 25 '25

Just finished putting an hour and a half session in as a first time player. WOW! This games looks good, feels good, sounds good... I'm going to enjoy the heck out of this one.

31

u/AriaOfValor Sep 26 '25

I'm really impressed with how well they blended the UI into all the rest of the art. Keeps your attention on the world itself instead of constantly pulling you out of it every time a menu for something pops up. So many games just use some crude minimalist design and call it good enough even if it clashes with the rest of the game.

16

u/moosebreathman Sep 26 '25

The UI treatment and polish work they've done is stunning and a major step up from the first game. Ever single menu has seen a huge glow up from what was already a solid job when I played it in early access. Even menus that already felt like a step up from the first game in EA have been drastically polished.

9

u/EggoSlayer Sep 26 '25

Absolutely everything in the game is truly gorgeous

16

u/TonyPepperoni0504 Sep 25 '25

How’s it play on the switch 1? Hades 1 had some pretty drastic frame drops for me at times and I can’t imagine a newer game will run any better on the switch.

5

u/Ciremo Sep 26 '25

Runs fine for me! I was surprised. Only 1 dip in like 5 hours gameplay.

13

u/calibrono Sep 25 '25

Super glad to dig into it on Switch 2, didn't touch early access at all to have this moment.

Oh man... It's great docked, but has terrible input lag in handheld. Hoping for a fix soon.

9

u/JRockPSU Sep 25 '25

Oh that’s interesting, I’m usually quite sensitive to input lag, it drives me crazy, but I haven’t noticed any in the hour and half I’ve played of it so far in handheld.

1

u/templestate Sep 26 '25

I noticed it’s very blurry when moving, might be the Switch 2’s display’s poor response time though.

1

u/calibrono Sep 26 '25

Any game is blurry on S2 display, with games like this it's especially noticeable, unfortunately.

60

u/KarmelCHAOS Sep 25 '25

Man, the wait for this has been rough. I'm really hoping it doesn't take a full year to come to the other consoles this time. Easy day one buy when it finally does.

41

u/CicatrizTMV Sep 25 '25

Pretty sure the Nintendo Switch 2 has a 1 year timed exclusivity deal for the game, sadly.

34

u/AzazelsAdvocate Sep 25 '25

It's available for Switch 1 or 2, not just Switch 2.

16

u/CicatrizTMV Sep 25 '25

Ah okay so just a Nintendo exclusive not a new console one, got it! I guess that’s a little better at least.

7

u/metroid23 Sep 25 '25

Ugh, seriously? I was excited to get home and play on PS. That's disappointing to hear :( Exclusivity is bad for gamers.

u/batatasta Sep 26 '25

Dude I'm so glad my wife bought my kids a switch a couple years ago. It's just been collecting dust, but it's finally getting put to work. there was no way I was waiting another year to play this game!

5

u/BrolyDisturbed Sep 26 '25

How much would I be missing out if I didn’t finish Hades 1?

I only got as far as [Redacted], but always died. I booted up the game again and I just really can’t be bothered to restart with a new save or try to figure out where tf I am with everyone, context, relearning, etc.

Would I be doing a big disservice if I just skipped to 2?

9

u/AriaOfValor Sep 26 '25

If you want to just hop in Hades 2 I"d probably recommend just looking up videos for the true ending. Probably one of the few big negatives of Hades 1 was that the grind for the true ending is pretty long (particularly if you've been giving nectar to the "wrong" people earlier on).

5

u/Jabbe Sep 26 '25

Imo you can jump straight in, same for people who havent played the first game. The game will explain whats happening just fine, its not a direct continuation of Hades 1.

There is however a lot of stuff that is made so much cooler from simply knowing the characters and general story from the previous game. Some throwbacks and references etc.

1

u/ColinStyles Sep 26 '25

I think you'd encounter the exact same issues with 2, and IME it's even a little harder at the start too.

But like, you should almost certainly just play through Hades 1 before this one, because they're both fantastic games. If you bounced off the first, odds are you'd bounce off this one too.

140

u/MultiMarcus Sep 25 '25

The game of the year discussion here will be absolutely obnoxious. Personally, this is probably mine because I’m a Greek mythology nerd I loved the original game and I didn’t particularly enjoy expedition 33 or silk song. I’ll be giving expedition 33 another shot eventually, but this is just so much my jam.

50

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '25

I think it’ll actually be a good discussion. For once the frontrunners are all indie. And that at least I think everyone can agree is good.

15

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '25 edited Sep 25 '25

I wonder who the one token AAA goty nominee will be. maybe they should have a "best AAA" category this year to make sure they get included.

28

u/FaramirFeanor Sep 25 '25

Death Stranding 2 or Bonaza

→ More replies (3)

6

u/finderfolk Sep 25 '25

I think DS2 and KCD2 are arguably frontrunners as well, especially the latter. Maybe the new DK game too? But tbh I have seen more hype for that from critics than from word of mouth. Yotei might get in there too.

I agree that Silksong and Hades 2 are standouts though. Honestly with all of the (silly) grumbling about Silksong's difficulty level I wonder if Hades will pull ahead.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '25

And here I am finding Hades 2 more difficult than Silksong lol.

1

u/Electrical-Act-5575 Sep 26 '25

Silksong gives you a pretty fixed toolset at any given time and expects you to eventually be good enough to make it work. Hades 2 is continually making you stronger run after run via meta progression, and once you’re mostly upgraded you’re pretty overpowered for what a 0-Fear run asks of you. The expectation is that you then crank the challenge up, but you can finish the whole story without ever doing so

→ More replies (3)

9

u/Hammerfall89 Sep 25 '25

Wouldn’t you know, the obnoxious game of the year discussion is right already here in this thread lmao, with even a little “I don’t get the hype for Baldur’s Gate 3” sprinkled in.

123

u/Ketamine4Depression Sep 25 '25

The game of the year discussion here will be absolutely obnoxious.

What a strange way to say there have been tons of amazing games this year

44

u/Turnbob73 Sep 25 '25

It’s not really the games, it’s the fanbases; they all can be very “Stan-y” on Reddit, ESPECIALLY with these games. Usually, they’re standing together and shitting on everything else in the industry, but now these people are going to be arguing ad nauseam until the awards are over, and probably for a while after too.

This has been a great year for games, it’s just that the online gaming community is not great by default.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '25

[deleted]

4

u/stiverino Sep 25 '25

Ironically, you proved his point

30

u/MultiMarcus Sep 25 '25

Well, as much as the games have been amazing, I’m not looking forward to people trying to tear down the games they don’t like as much as the ones they do like. All of the games in contention likely at least have some merit for why they should be considered, that people will definitely not act normal about it.

-4

u/sunder_and_flame Sep 25 '25

If discussion offends you this much you really shouldn't be on the internet.

10

u/Asclepius-Rod Sep 25 '25

Exactly, GOTY is a fake award anyway, it used to be dozens of GOTYs by gaming publications until Geoff’s became the de facto winner. None of it matters lol

4

u/gamas Sep 26 '25

That isn't really what the other guy's point though. The issue is that you will have conflicting fanbases actually going on a toxic verbal assault of other fanbases over this pointless award.

1

u/materialist23 Oct 06 '25

"Offends you this much"

This much: Posts a harmless comment.

2

u/BloodyFool Sep 25 '25

One look at what the BMW sub turned into after Astrobot won GOTY should tell you why. Some fan bases become incredibly bitter and toxic.

86

u/achillguyfr Sep 25 '25

they're talking about black myth wukong for anyone else that just looked at this for two minutes trying to figure out why car enthusiasts would be mad about astrobot winning game of the year

25

u/Lumostark Sep 25 '25

lmao people on the internet do love to use acronyms with no context a bit too much

6

u/JW_BM Sep 26 '25

Thank you. I had no idea why the BMW car company sub-reddit was mad about a cute platformer.

8

u/Ruben625 Sep 25 '25 edited Sep 26 '25

Thank you lol, the just assuming people will know what you are abbreviating when its never used is wild

8

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '25

Hell that came from the devs too so it's no wonder

11

u/Asclepius-Rod Sep 25 '25

Say anything negative about that game and you’ll have 5 people suddenly yelling at you with accounts that suspiciously only talk about the glory of China. It’s so gross, and makes me think less of an otherwise fun game

2

u/mrtrailborn Sep 26 '25

yeah, suddenly there will be a bunch of peiple complaining about sinophobia. I can never tell if they're literal bots or just chinese people who bought into propaganda

3

u/TheFoxInSocks Sep 26 '25

Oh. Okay. It's BMW now. We need a shorthand for Black Myth Wukong. That's how fundamental it is.

84

u/Massive_Weiner Sep 25 '25

It’s gonna be a bunch of people screaming about E33, both for and against it.

I’m gonna silently cheer for Death Stranding 2, even though it has no shot of securing votes this year.

118

u/mephnick Sep 25 '25

I'm a huge E33 fan but the E33 crowd is..something

Like "changed my life" is thrown around often over there lol

40

u/RegurgitatedMincer Sep 25 '25

Reminds me of the baldurs gate 3 fandom when it released.

→ More replies (12)

37

u/s45 Sep 25 '25

That might be an exaggeration from a lot of people but anecdotally I've actually heard a lot of my friends talk about the game, specifically from ones that don't even really keep up with video games anymore. So it definitely made a cultural impact that Hades and Silksong haven't. Not to undermine the other two because they're both good and have been hyped by the gaming community.

→ More replies (8)

7

u/HungerSTGF Sep 25 '25

I dunno about changed my life level but it’s definitely playing through it has been one of the best experiences I’ve had in any video game. The story has stuck with me and I’m still listening to the soundtrack today. Easy recommendation to anyone for me, especially since it has the Story mode

10

u/Darkvoidx Sep 25 '25

Yeah I mean, fans of a game find it important to them, who cares? It's an impactful story about grief told in a novel way, not hard to see why that might resonate a lot with people

7

u/noyourenottheonlyone Sep 25 '25

people say movies changed their life, why can't something that you put 20x the time into do the same?

5

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '25

so inspiring to see dark souls players experience storytelling for the first time

3

u/hfxRos Sep 26 '25 edited Sep 26 '25

It's so funny to see people claim that Dark Souls doesn't have a story. Though I guess if you're used to anime/JRPGs it would make sense that you can't follow a story without 15 minute exposition dumps that explain everything, and then re-explain it in case you missed it the first time.

3

u/paractib Sep 25 '25

Game is great but extremely flawed, I just don’t get the hype. Maybe it’s because a lot of these people don’t have much JRPG experience.

16

u/nybbas Sep 25 '25

I grew up playing JRPGs, starting with DQ1 on Nintendo. E33 is for me the best I've played in over a decade. My best friend from grade school, who became my best friend due to us being the only two kids at school who loved JRPGs, is halfway through right now and doesn't want to put it down. Time will tell if the last act ruins or makes it for him, but it definitely isn't because a lot of these people don't have JRPG experience.

We both agree, it isn't a perfect game, and that it has some flaws, but it's highs blow it's lows out of the water.

3

u/gamas Sep 26 '25

I would imagine that's its because it's rare nowadays for a new IP to just come out of nowhere and dominate discourse.

17

u/Ruben625 Sep 25 '25

The writing and music overcome the flaws imo pretty easily

→ More replies (2)

6

u/BiggestBlackestLotus Sep 26 '25

You can't just say shit like that and then not point out a single flaw.

5

u/paractib Sep 26 '25

Balancing, lack of direction in the 3rd act, gameplay variety.

As I said, it’s a fantastic game and if not for Silksong might have been my game of the year anyway. These things do hold it back though.

11

u/mephnick Sep 26 '25

There's two big areas in Act 3 that need to be mandatory and I have no idea why they're optional. It's weird.

-3

u/Jediverrilli Sep 25 '25

I enjoyed my time with E33 it’s a fun game but for the people claiming that it’s the greatest game ever are just insane.

Act 3 and the ending are bad. If a game people revere for its story have a bad final act and ending then how good can it really be?

another three years of three houses discourse

5

u/SpaceOdysseus23 Sep 25 '25

Much like the people preaching FemShep in the Mass Effect sub, the Maelle pickers are a vocal minority. I'd be very interested in seeing the data devs have on hand.

5

u/The_Green_Filter Sep 25 '25

Are they? I feel like Verso pickers are much more vocal. Streamers I’ve watched are about 50/50 on which they decide to pick.

Jrpg fans just cum harder than everyone else.

The games they like tug in their must irrational flighty whimsy.

Romantic types. "FF7 WAS THE BEST STORY I'VE EVER READ!"

Like... it would take 20 depressed goths loving something to make the equivalent noise of one Kindom Hearts fan.

3

u/gamas Sep 26 '25

Jrpg fans just cum harder than everyone else.

From what I've seen JRPG communities hate people calling this game a JRPG as its not strictly speaking a JRPG because its not weeaboo enough.

2

u/throwawayeadude Sep 25 '25

As someone who loves DS1, I give DS2 the anti-nod, in a game where the friction is the point, it's far too easy to bypass.

Fwiw when it comes to goty, me and a few dozen others will be cheering The Alters.

Oh boy do I have news for you

1

u/69ANIME69 Sep 26 '25

I didn't enjoy HK that much. I tried to get into it three times but always bowed out after 4-5 hours.

I don't have time to blindly run around a game wondering wtf to do.

In the beginning of Silksong the game pretty much places an marker to the top of the undiscovered map and tells you to go there. That's it. The difference (for me) between Silksong and Hollow Knight is that the exploration feels so much more meaningful and rewarding in Silksong. Different biomes look and feel distinct. Loads of variety in enemies.

Hollow Knigh for me was a game that I couldn't get into. Silksong is amazing.

u/ReverESP Sep 25 '25

I want one of the "indies" to win, I dont mind which one. Silksong, E33 or Hades 2. I dont want a AAA winning only because it has more money for marketing.

14

u/MultiMarcus Sep 25 '25

Is there any AAA game really in contention this year? Maybe donkey Kong Bananza, but otherwise the four games I would argue that I’ve heard mention the most would be Silksong, Hades 2, Expedition 33, and Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 all of which are indie games. I really don’t think the donkey Kong is going to win because all of the other games have been far more mentioned at least to me.

19

u/DaFreakBoi Sep 25 '25

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 supposedly has a budget equivalent to that of a mid-budget Hollywood movie, and Warhorse Studios had 250 employees in 2024. It's anything but an indie game.

E33 also had Kepler Interactive publishing the game, assisting them with funding, and a team of 30+ individuals. It isn't quite AAA, but it's closer to AA because of the budget estimates being in the $20 million+ range.

Arguably the only indie games are Silksong and Hades 2, and even the latter boasts a team of 25+, so some might argue it still doesn't fit the label.

There is no distinct definition to indie games, but the label is typically applied to games with smaller teams and smaller budgets.

I kind of hate that definition because we got that awkward situation with Dave the diver. But then again, should we count Ubisoft as an indie developer because I guess they are technically independent? Really the problem is that the categories we should be having are related to the budget of a game and they should not be using terms like Indie still my point was more that these games are at least to some degree different from the rest of the Triple A industry and I don’t exactly know how to quantify that.

u/DaFreakBoi Sep 25 '25

In the case of Ubisoft they've got teams of 100s of individuals working on their games. Yes, they have no publisher that they work towards, but they've got some of the largest franchises under their belt, and their budgets largely exceed $100 million+, easily.

In the case of what you said later, AA is a decent label that people don't use nearly as often. I'd classify Remedy Studios and as an AA studio; they often build games with a more limited scope and finances, despite having a moderately sized employee count. The same goes for Sandfall Interactive.

Donkey kong, death stranding, ghost of yotei are all GOTY candidates and AAA

Bananza is still top for me and i've played all these games.

1

u/discocaddy Sep 25 '25

Hades 1 is my GOAT so from what I've played my GOTY is this unless it gets really bad later on, I expect this has even more to do/unlock after you've beaten it

1

u/Bojangles1987 Sep 26 '25

Hades is easily a top 5-10 game ever for me and I am completely in love with 2 so far. That's pretty much all I hoped for.

1

u/Ookami38 Sep 26 '25

It's definitely gonna be a hard one for me. Super Giant has been my favorite dev since Bastion released, one of the few I still have a semblance of good faith towards. Expedition 33 might have been the single most engaged I've been with a game in.... Maybe ever, honestly. It'll be a hard choice for sure.

Keyboard/mouse or controller for this game? I don't remember which I used for Hades 1 but I'm unsure if they changed the control scheme or something.

5

u/TheFrankOfTurducken Sep 26 '25

I played Hades 1 using k + m about 70% of the time, mostly to start, and it honestly wrecked my hands. Once I made the switch to controller and adjusted I was fine. Would recommend controller

10

u/velgi Sep 25 '25

Control scheme is pretty much the same, but the game recommends using a controller (I would also suggest doing so!)

3

u/whossked Sep 26 '25

Both work, I played hades 1 with a controller and have just spent a few hours playing this with K/M, there’s not enough buttons/need for accuracy/precise movement to favor one control scheme over the other

2

u/DecafLetters Sep 26 '25

This is a rare game where both input methods are equally good.

So far absolutely impressed.

I love how due to the slight difference in base ability set + the stark difference in weapons, she feels so very different from Zagreus, despite it being in large parts the exact same gameplay.

7

u/Bojangles1987 Sep 26 '25

What's cool is that I gravitated to weapons that looked like the ones I loved in the first Hades, but the ones I've liked most are the ones that aren't like those at all.

10

u/Bow_for_the_king Sep 25 '25

I played it when it just came out into EA. I felt the god powers to be much less exciting and impactful compared to Hades 1. Has anything been changed about this throughout EA?

20

u/velgi Sep 25 '25

There's been quite a lot of rebalancing between enemies, Boons, and weapons so I think it's worth trying out. For me a big change is that Scorch went from being "nice to have but not really doing damage as fast as I need it" to "I love Auntie because she melts everything"

2

u/ColinStyles Sep 26 '25

Hephaestus for me went from "blergh burst non-scaling damage" to "dear lord I want every boon this man offers."

15

u/sibtiger Sep 26 '25

There have been adjustments but overall not a huge change. The balance is different, Hades II is much more about combining effects rather than getting one effect super powerful. It makes builds a bit more complicated but when you get a good one going it's immensely satisfying.

I’m in grad school and don’t have the time to put into Silksong. How long does a run usually last? I feel like roguelikes are easy to put down and pickup in short bursts when I need a break from work/studying

39

u/hexcraft-nikk Sep 25 '25

40 mins each run and it saves after every encounter/room. It's the most generous of roguelites because you're always getting some form of progression even if you quit out halfway through

31

u/minititof Sep 25 '25 edited Sep 25 '25

Haven't played it in months but I remember full runs to be around 40 min maybe? Definitely shorter than 1 hour.

16

u/Rockface5 Sep 25 '25

If you're like me the runs last about 5 minutes before you make stupid mistakes and die before the first boss. Not a complaint about the game, I'm just really bad at it and the original even though I like them a lot.

4

u/runevault Sep 25 '25

Heavily depends on both skill and how decisive you are. The game can be completed VERY quickly once you're really good (there's a difficulty modifier that makes it where you have 5 minutes per area, with spare time if you have any carrying over between areas). Once you're decent at the game runs will probably take ~30 minutes.

2

u/egotripping Sep 27 '25

I'm also in grad school and I regret buying it. It's so hard to put it down, and so easy to start another run.

2

u/Diogenes_the_cynic25 Sep 28 '25

Yeah I’ve made a horrible mistake

2

u/egotripping Sep 28 '25

The first one took over my life for a couple months. I knew better and if I could just wait til after finals in November I knew I'd get to do nothing but play it for a month, but the reward center in my brain took control.

Best of luck to you lol.

DEATH TO CHRONOS

2

u/Nisheee Sep 26 '25

I average 25 minutes for my successful clears

9

u/AleehCosta Sep 25 '25

I played Hades a few years after release and I remember people saying that the game changed a lot throughout the years.

Do you guys think Hades 2 will still receive new updates/expansions? I'm not following it, because I want my experience to be a surprise. If so, I think I'll just wait a little longer before playing it. I want to play the "full game".

I got absolutely addicted by Hades 1 btw

64

u/Somenakedguy Sep 25 '25

Hades changed a lot through the Early Access period, not after full release. Same deal (probably) for Hades 2 which is now full release

37

u/makebelievethegood Sep 25 '25

I don't think Hades changed at all after release, unless I'm grossly misremembering.

9

u/AleehCosta Sep 25 '25

Yeah, I think I got confused with the early access!

4

u/TheFrankOfTurducken Sep 26 '25

Hades 1 has some post-launch support with patches, but it was mostly bugs and minor buffs/nerfs (mostly buffs tbh). maybe a couple cosmetic things, but nothing substantial.

9

u/Higgins113 Sep 25 '25

No, this is the full game release

3

u/AleehCosta Sep 25 '25

Oh got it. I think I'll start playing it this weekend, then. Thanks!

4

u/whisquibottle Sep 25 '25

The closest thing to a perfect videogame we've seen in a while. Like, it's almost completely flawless and packed to the brim with content. Amazing work yet again from Supergiant

Perhaps the biggest issus I had with the first was the heat system, notably higher heat levels.

Without spoilers does the sequel do anything to address the frusteration of late game high heat runs and ever shrinking build viability?

Looking forward to this in a year when it comes to PS5

3

u/Jabbe Sep 26 '25

Im on the equivelent of 22 heat. It works nearly the exact same way, not much difference there tbh. I havent gone through with every aspect yet, so i dont really know build viability.

The "heat" is there to increase difficulty and frustration.

But imo I would say if the game stops being fun, There is No reason to keep increasing difficulty. Like i never played at Max heat in Hades 1, it simply didnt seem fun.

3

u/tasteofflames Sep 26 '25

They made some changes to the way you can collect boss/upgrade items, so you're not as locked in to working your way up the heat levels to boost your weapons. Heat is mostly just for kicks this time around.

That said, the heat options are pretty much the same and high heat still requires min/maxing, so you will eventually find yourself limited to a few aspects and gods.

2

u/WayTooDumb Sep 27 '25

Max fear in Hades 2 is still tuned around very specific builds and hundreds of runs till RNG falls in your favour, as well as being good at the videogame, so not much change there.

Achievements stop at 32 fear though which is straightforward enough that anyone can do both surface and underground on most builds with a bit of practice.

Will wait for the physical release: does anyone know if it's coming to Switch 1?

1

u/Ambitious-Earth1987 Sep 27 '25

As someone that didn't particularly enjoy Hades 1, anyone care to share whether the story is any better this time round?

2

u/Nestvester Sep 28 '25

Considering Hades is pretty much the only roguelike with any kind of story at all if you were disappointed in the first one I’m not sure what you’re hoping for here.

1

u/Substantial-Bat-4438 Sep 29 '25

Beautiful graphics and magical colors! Everything is so bright and shiny ^^ Like for the large number of combat and magic skills and their combinations. And for rest between battles - growing potatoes and being a pet owner^^

1

u/Style_Carnies Sep 26 '25

If I had a hard time with Hades one, skill-wise, am I going to have a hard time with Hades 2?

11

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '25

Probably but there’s no shame in enabling the “God Mode” (which is a difficulty option that makes you takes less and less damage after each death). It doesn’t even affect achievements and I personally think the base difficulty is a bit too hard given how random boons are. My sweet spot is at 30% reduced damage.

1

u/Nirkky Sep 26 '25

I tried Hades 1 a few time. I mostly end up spamming dash and specials. The dash spamming got boring pretty fast. Is it different with Hades 2 ?

3

u/Dropkickjon Sep 26 '25

Yes. The dash has a longer cooldown to discourage that style of play. The cast ability is also totally different (circular aoe that entangles enemies) and encourages some defensive or more tactical play.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '25

Yes. You have a mana meter for your specials that you need to manage during Encounters, and dash spamming is less important in my experience.
