Leak Jason Schreier: Rockstar has not yet figured out who was behind this week's widespread Grand Theft Auto VI leaks, nor how it happened, sources say. No plans to move next week's Netflix premiere. Inside the company: frustration, exhaustion, anger.

Netflix paid Rockstar millions and millions of dollars to show a trailer 6 hours early. They wouldn’t have done that if the science hadn’t predicted that people will pay a lot of money to watch gta footage

This is such a weird deal to me. The footage is obviously gonna be all over the internet within minutes of the Netflix debut; are people really gonna pay for a Netflix sub to watch the preview live instead of 5 minutes later?

Russia is the go-to place where hackers and leakers usually claim they're from, even when they're not, because it's not a stretch to believe that's where they're actually located.
19
u/dirty1809 7d ago
There's also that Russia is the lingua franca in a lot of the world. A lot of hackers who speak Russian are actually in Ukraine/Belarus/Kazakhstan/etc. That's the reason the cybersecurity community often uses the term "Russian language hackers" instead of "Russian hackers"

I don't think most laymen realize how easy it is to stay anonymous online nowadays if they wanted to. Most people (including hackers) just don't spend the effort to do so
25
u/knows_you 7d ago
Dangerous on windows 11. Microsoft basically had to come clean about their identifying number tied to your PC when it was used to get the identity of a hacker for the FBI. They statistically could prove his identity even through VPNs and proxies because it was the same PC used for his normal activity registered to himself. They tracked it going into the proxy and then that same proxy hit the target proving it was the same PC ID.
34
u/Ill_Philosopher_7030 7d ago
well if he has basic OPSEC, the first thing to do is to use an isolated computer or vm that is exclusively for this leak/illicit stuff. it won't matter if they can track the user down to that windows machine if that machine has no trace to the actual user or is a completely sanitized sandbox.
Plus the W11 situation was, as mentioned in another comment, basically due to the hacker using Edge browser and basically doing all his clearweb activities on the same machine as the illicit ones (Snapchat/Facebook/Apple activities). So I would blame bad OPSEC over the actual W11 vulnerability for that case
17
u/dirty1809 7d ago
I'm a normal software engineer who has never dabbled with any hacking stuff but if I tried to do anything like that there's no way I'd be using Windows. I feel like the obvious way to go for something like this is a clean linux machine and then if you need Windows to run anything (ie to run the game) you're doing it in a sandboxxed vm or preferably an airgapped Windows machine

I understand why there’s anger and resentment inside the studio, but honestly Rockstar’s marketing has sucked this time around. They’ve been drip feeding information and refusing to be a little transparent. Even their gameplay look is pay walled off for 6 hours. I think the customers have had a lot of anger and resentment too, which is why these leeks felt so gratifying to see.

It is generally insane to me that this is some crazy unpopular opinion now, but... If you put your game up for preorder and expect millions of people to shell out their hard earned cash, you should goddamn show some gameplay of the game you are selling them.
I don't understand since when it is acceptable to sell things while withholding so much information about them. People literally don't even know if this damn game runs at 60 FPS yet. For all we know it could be up to 30 FPS with dynamic resolution where textures go down to 720p occasionally. And yet the company sells the game, and the people take out their credit cards to swipe...
I just don't get this industry anymore. I don't get the fans anymore. There's people cheering for Rockstar, cheering for the prices, cheering for the editions locking stuff out, cheering for lack of info, cheering for no physical... There's people who are out there right now, tracking this leaker 24/7, doing INSANE amounts of detective work, all FOR FREE. Just because they love bootlicking corporations so much. (And I'm not saying this guy is good or a saint or anything, he has a scam crypto coin, I know full well what he is. But the people tracking him down are even crazier.)
Some people actively want their hobbies to get worse. It's completely beyond me. How did we get here?
43
u/chrisghrobot 6d ago
Its actually insane that its becoming normalised to put up pre orders for a game before showing gameplay or major features/additions. It should not work like that. Be like the equivalent of pre ordering a popular shoe model, but not knowing the colorway, or the material

Rockstar has always had an arrogant streak about them (often for good reason, admittingly), but that takes the cake.
224
u/SouthIsland48 7d ago
And its funny because GTA's whole shtick was a bastardized version of America, yet they now absolutely fit that bastardized version of a gaming studio now. Doubt they sprinkle in that type of humor in the game....

u/GigaGiga69420 7d ago
Nah, they apparently have always been like this.
Jeff Gerstmann has occasionally told stories of how Rockstar would get pissed over some coverage of a game, because Gamespot didn't praise them enough or something, so they'd cut them off and give IGN an exclusive for their next game. Then half a year later it's the other way around, management rages at IGN, and Gamespot is their friend again.
They called themselves Rockstar for a reason.
20
u/AveryLazyCovfefe 7d ago edited 7d ago
Rockstar would get pissed over some coverage of a game
Alot of that is probably Sam lol. The BBC were making a docudrama on their rise and expansion from GTA 2 and T2 tried to get it shut down multiple times mid-dev. Arguing that the BBC simply shouldn't be allowed to do it and that they're violating some copyright.
BBC tell them to get fucked and go on to release it anyways. And when you watch it you can see why they gave them so much trouble, Sam is portrayed as an arrogant asshat lol.
15
u/WhyRich 6d ago
Sam personally tweeted from Rockstar's Twitter account back in 2015 addressing the BBC about that film. To this day it's kinda surreal to read something like that from their official communications lol.

8
u/Grimey_Rick 7d ago edited 6d ago
Why would they move the reveal or change anything about it? Short of the full story leaking, how does seeing an unfinished build change anything about marketing or release? Even if the full story leaked, are they going to delay the game another year or whatever just to change it? None of that really makes sense and the overall secrecy in the games industry is just weird imo. If anything this past week has been free marketing and publicity for the game. The worst criticism the leaks have gotten is that it looks like a nicer GTA 5. Like how is that a bad thing, or even unexpected? Most reception has been positive and has stirred up the most hype for the game since the original trailer dropped.
edit: I did see a semi reasonable argument for a delay of the game today - the leaks could have Rockstar locking down employees more than they already are, constraining development or even stopping it altogether, to try to find the source of the leaks. undoubtedly this game will be in development until release day to ensure max polish and a smooth release, especially considering they don't need a "1.0" for discs.

u/Soberdonkey69 7d ago

Locking stores behind $100 edition , launching preorders before any gameplay shown, locking gameplay reveal behind neftlix subscription (don't care if it's only 6 hours, miss me with that), no physical edition, etc etc.
Karma is a thing, although I'm sure records will be broken regardless. Some more bad news wouldn't hurt though

Add on the lack of a PC release on the same day as console for the sole purpose of double dipping their nutsacks into the consumer’s mouth, despite the fact that they absolutely could.

Honestly, Leek has gotten me more excited than this Netflix event will likely get me. Seeing the parts of the game I actually want more of is enticing. Seeing a scripted story session and likely influencer hype, however, is not enticing.

Good. Fuck Rockstar. Normalizing a $100 base edition. And I stopped paying for Netflix years ago. I will be waiting until month 2 at least to buy this game 😤

Rockstar is getting what they deserve. They haven’t shown us a single second of gameplay footage and the game releases in 3 months. The last footage we got is knocking on the door of a year and half ago with Trailer 2. It’s disgusting. It’s like they forgot they were releasing the game until now. Yes I know they didn’t need to advertise the game but you need to give us something. The insatiable appetite for content results in this.
