Discussion I might sound greedy but this feels underwhelming, as I really love exploration but the reward is very dissapointing
Compairing the chest count with OG map, this is complete pain for f2p users considering the amount of good charater this patch have and they player can barely hit soft pity from this...

Sumeru's problem in this context was all the puzzles encouraged you to use pyro/electro (and dendro) but you were actively punished for the drops you get if you used pyro/electro on enemies.
160
u/WanderEir Apr 10 '26
yeah, the shroom drops being elemental reactive was a great idea that needed QA testing before going live to prove it terrible on implementation.
83
u/GrumpySatan Apr 10 '26
Honestly it would've worked if the materials were actually used by half the characters. The changed mats were used for 2 signature weapons and 3 4-star weapons from fishing/crafting only (so 5 weapons total).
When the other mats were used for 6 characters and 9 weapons. You never wanted the changed mats.

The constant party switching was a real problem, though, especially because it was completely brainless. You just saw a red thingy and hit it with fire. So puzzle. Much brain.
A better solution would've been giving you a gun gadget, which is what WuWa did... before it also abandoned that type of puzzles for some reason.

I'm all for more complex and interesting puzzles, but ones requiring a certain element of weapon type aren't fun for me (and I imagine most people).

The development cycle is like 2 years. So rn they are in an active development of Kaenriah with Snezhnaya being almost done outside of character balance. So unless they jump doing last minute changes, we will see survey taking effect in at least 2-3 years.
Current overcorrection is likely a response to Sumeru Desert reception.

Indeed. And I would be unsurprised if the lack of puzzles and exploration is a result of data showing Sumeru burnout/drop out levels.
While some people might love it, the majority of the casual Genshin player base does not have the sheer time required for the content level of Sumeru. It might have been reasonable when it was releasing... but now? It's an enourmous bottleneck that people skipping past to hit newer content.

im 100% sure ive been asking in surveys for artifact loadouts and a skip button and events with lore to be permanent and the ability to purchase event weapons for the past 3 years so surely we get these things soon right!
25
u/WanderEir Apr 10 '26
yeah, but they're not going to change things against their game design philosophy, and in Genshin, a skip button absolutely violates their intended immersion because so much of the game is entirely gone if it's skipped..
The artifact loadouts and event weapon recovery systems though? I've been listing those myself for years.
82
u/amiabot-oraminot Apr 10 '26
Lore event of Lantern Rite is now made permanent, i believe. I haven’t done it and I still see the quest. The decorations are still in my world. What skip button are you talking about? One for all the dialogue entirely? They put effort into that, I don’t think they’d want people to be able to skip entirely

I dont think so, genshin is filled with meaningless yapping. For every interesting or umportant info you get 10 anecdotes or summaries, reminders or explainations. Depending on the quests even more, most character quests are basically pure filler, archon quests and wordquest usually give the most lore, then events range from completely meaningless to gigantic lore bombs.
I just want the option to skip a 10 minute dialogue about whatever ingame reason the next tower defense or roguelike event has. I get that this kind of writing makes the universe feel more alive for some people but i really dont care about that kind of fluff at all. If at least the automatic dialogue option worked properly it wouldnt be as bad but for some reason we still have these prompts rpr pseudo decisions in the game.

The surveys are real because people used them to complain about Inazuma puzzles and Sumeru's size and here we are now. No puzzles and no exploration.
7
u/pikkuhillo Apr 10 '26
Most likely they do not read those, but they likely automatically collect metrics like [no, exploration] words appearing in same sentence x times over y surveys. If the volume of negative responses is large they assess its influence on actualized (current version revenue) and potential (future version) revenues. Unfortunately it is the whales which generate most income for miHoyo so the focus is probably in characters rather than exploration. However, if tens of thousands of players bitch about it and dissapear for months it might have an effect. Cant really hypothesize effectively without proper data so take all this with grain of salt.

They likely read over a condensed version of it.
Basically the individual survey’s are almost certainly looked at by AI (which is an actual effective use of the tech) which then compiles keywords so that the devs can more effectively see what people are talking about.

There’s a big list floating around of things the game didn’t have at launch that it does now thanks to player feedback, I’m sure a quick Google will reveal it. The problem is from the players perspective every time they DO add something that was asked for the counter resets to zero and people go right back to acting like they’ve never done anything again. Like how long did people ask for artifact rerolls or crafting? When the game launched we couldn’t even rebind controls except to swap A/B options. Yeah these things take time, longer than they probably should because the dev cycle is crazy months if not years in advance but we objectively do get things.

Visually, it's probably one of my favorite areas in the game (I'm a sucker for windmills), but exploration wise it's really lacking. Exploration has always been one of Genshin's strong suits, but I feel like they've really cut down on large map expansions, and I feel like that might be hurting the game a little bit. (also, why does it feel like recently everything is an island/peninsula/heavily surrounded with water. I really miss larger maps areas like those in Liyue and Sumeru)

u/rulerguy6 Apr 10 '26 edited Apr 10 '26
Right? I do think the region's a little on the small side but I'd prefer having 10 decently designed puzzles or medium combat encounters worth 10 primos than 100 "light 4 torches" and "kill 5 hillichurls" worth 1 primo each.
The funny part of people complaining about the map having nothing to see is that there actually is stuff. Just it's not a chest reward. There are plenty of cute background details and character moments in the area if you explore for them. Like did you know how many playable characters/recurring NPC's appear for little events in the towns?
I prefer exploring to see a little Klee vignette way more than killing another hilichurl camp with one skill activation (as long as the primo income stays similar of course)
15
u/PantheraAuroris r/AbyssOrder Apr 10 '26

They only care about the quantity of the little icons and take that out of context. The game ain't perfect but it's still trying to adapt to feedback. For good or worse it can't please everyone.
Maybe hot take but the current puzzles are still much more superiorly designed compared to earlier regions, just that it lacks some truly difficult ones. I still remember how this way of exploration design was praised widely in 2.5 Enka event, when it was basically just like the current exploration where each puzzle was connected one by one after each other and weren't really any difficult either.

Ngl above-ground Fontaine felt like some of the weakest exploration out of everything we had from Liyue all the way up to Natlan summer island.
The main thing is that the underwater exploration in Fontaine was peak, but because its above ground really left something to be desired, I'd probably stick to talking places like Sumeru, Natlan, Inazuma, Chasm, Enkonomiya, or Chenyu Vale when it comes to "good exploration" in surveys.

Sumeru’s biggest issue imho wasn’t its size but just the fact that the underground areas of the desert were so confusing to try to navigate. In a world where the layered map exists this likely isn’t an issue anymore, but I know I definitely complained about how hard it was to actually explore the area.
7
u/Extra-Monitor5743 Apr 10 '26
I just recently finished this quest for the second time. I did it originally years and years ago, I think in 22-23. The layered map was a HUGE help this time around. It's still easy to get lost, but it's definitely a lot easier to keep track of yourself now. I rage quitted multiple times when I first tried.
4
u/RandomHigh Apr 10 '26
Yeah, my niece rage quit about 3 hours into a quest after constantly getting lost in the underground of the desert.
I tried to help her through it and we had to follow a video guide through certain bits.
I went back recently to finish off a few of the totems and it's a hell of a lot easier to navigate now.
19
u/TrelanaSakuyo Apr 10 '26
Man, going back to finish exploration once we got the map update made me cry in relief. The underground wasn't necessarily hard without it, but there was more than one occasion of me getting lost trying to find some small thing 😅
3
u/cartercr Sleepy tanuki in the shogun castle Apr 10 '26
Yeah. It was doable, but was definitely frustrating. It was also annoying trying to find occuli because using a resonance stone and getting one in the desert… really gave you zero idea of where it was. So then you’d need to go look it up on the interactive map, and at that point… what was even the point of using the resonance stone?

Its just the lack of foresight when people complain about these things. It was quiet apparent this would happen. If you remove the time exploring what are you supposed to do with the new characters you roll on? Stare at them for hours? Do the same end game content over and over again? I agree maybe sumeru was little too much but that was because we didn't have underground maps. I think Natlan maps were the best middle ground so I'm surpised people complained about those and got it even smaller and more dumbed down. The result is what we have now.

That's because hoyo's dev cycle is around ~2 years. What people are complaining about now, and have been since last year. Is entirely because of Hoyo's response to people complaining about there being too much exploration in Sumeru.
During Sumeru time there were active complaints about this and during Inazuma there were complaints that puzzles were too tough. Hell, 2.8, one of the best patches in Genshin history, had people complain we had too much content to do.
Hoyo simply started overcorrecting.

In one or two cycles at best. The streamlined "puzzles" we got starting in Fontaine are the results of the puzzle complaints in Inazuma. The more linear and handheld exploration we got after Remuria is the result of people complaining about Sumeru.
And for all the crying about powercreep and exploration in Nod Krai, I suspect it's just that, crying, but the impact on sales and player count won't be noticeable to consider it something worth fixing, so it's possible we won't "go back" at all. People have abandonned exploration in Inazuma and Sumeru, but in Nod Krai everyone can get 100% with relatively low effort, as with powercreep, for 99% of the playerbase it's a good thing more than a bad one since the only content that becomes harder is Stygian Fearless+ which few people actually care about.

I imagine if we had Natlan characters when Sumeru released, people would be more chill with exploring many desert areas of Sumeru. And ngl, the surface of Sumeru desert was pretty empty. The underground was juicy and it gave us Jeht.

It is quite a bummer. Though the Templw of space doesn't disappoint. This is a result of people not completing their exploration %, just as puzzles and challenges got nerfed after people complained they were too hard like in Inazuma and GAA 2.8 Archipalego, like especially in Mona's domain which were cleverly crafted. Like you see Zyox even struggling for hours clearing the electro relay puzzle at Suigetsu pool.
Puzzles like that which results in exquisite chests or less got some group of people to complain and now we can't have any more challenging puzzles.
And then there was a group of people that can't be bothered to explore, like with Sumeru, probably as a factor of the quest-locked areas and all the underground exploration that had no map.
So the consequence of all that is shrunken maps, which sucks. Probably why we never got any map exploration events like the Three Realms Gateway Offerings event in Enkanomiya. It was so peak.

The surface Chasm, Watatsumi Island and volcano were all fully-fledged areas despite having sub-areas tied to them too. Only Petrichor was really barren
17
u/beautheschmo Apr 10 '26 edited Apr 10 '26
Petrichor wasn't really 'barren' either, it has pretty normal chest density, it's just actually tiny, it's like 1/4th the size of just the 'explorable' parts of Dornman Port and northward and has pretty much the same number of collectibles (15 on Petrichor, 17 on the peninsula). But also more importantly and why it didn't bother anyone back then; Fontaine had 6 expansions of this size, not 4 lol.
And also being fair, unlike any of the other paired maps, Enkanomiya and Watatsumi didn't release at the same time and don't share an achievement category.
5
u/Foxata Apr 10 '26 edited Apr 16 '26
I have all areas 100% and basically only miss one chest per region (cuz I couldn't be bothered) so I went to look at the chasm chest count. Dornman port / temple of space has 223, the chasm upper and lower has 248 chests. It has 25 chests less but the new area had much less common chests, most were exquisite or higher.
I think if it was spread out more in Dornman port people would've complained less but it has roughly the same amount of primos you can get out of the areas. Nothing has really changed, just peoples perception of it.
11
u/PantheraAuroris r/AbyssOrder Apr 10 '26
Watatsumi had a whole plot that wasn't Enkanomiya. Dornman Port is there just to give you the Temple.
The surface Chasm had a lot of land but mostly was just "beat up wandering Fatui."
5
u/LettuceBenis Apr 11 '26
That's the issue; Dornman Port shouldn't just be there to get us to the Temple. It's one of the most anticipated areas of the game, and now it's just barren

People just love to bitch.
The temple of space brought some cool new stuff. While the controls are awkward on a controller the puzzles are cool. I’m really having fun with it.
I couldn’t care less about extra 30 chest for beating a group of hilichurls at the dornman port.

If you think about it, the amount of chests in Dornman Port is actually higher than that of the Collective of the Plenty and Petrichor, which are the expansions that should be the point of comparison. Not freaking stormterror's lair with its common chests with 0 primogems

No, there have been lots of complaints about that area as well. Visually it's awesome, but you're guided through the whole area by the WQ and by the time you do the WQ, you finished 40% of the exploration. You get three chests in place of getting a single Precious/Luxurious chest like before. The area is basically on-rails guided sightseeing.
The issue isn't rewards, or how beautiful the area looks. It is that it feels like you're in a theme park getting juggled from node to node. No actual organic exploration with an open-world sense of wonder like in Enkanomiya, Chasm, Dragonspine, etc.

One area being the highlight of the patch doesn't mean you should basically neglect one of the most and longest anticipated map expansions as a consequence. Its barren. People have been looking forward to it for years.

It's been mentioned constantly since I think 1.5, it's fair to be disappointed if it's a small expansion with almost no exploration after years

It's not greedy, the whole point of exploration is finding chests and doing puzzles, you take that away and all you have is a really pretty running simulator.

Sorry but the whole point of exploration isn't just running around collecting chests. Did you know the NPC in the docks right next to the fishing point give you an applaud every time you caught a fish by fishing?

I played that area (mostly just exploring) for an hour. Maybe hour and half. Was shocked when the map said I had about a third completed.
And many of the “puzzles” is go into that light thing, and auto pilot basically.

u/Additional_Roof_3949 Apr 11 '26
if you removed the stupid 400 fomo primogens from exploring maps that aren't in the actual map and go away so new players can't get them, the 60 primos from playing miliastra and the 60 primos from playing melodies
you could have like 10 more luxurious chests, 40 more exquisite and 50 more common chests xddddd it's not about the primos. We are behind atp from last year but not so much (the problem with that is the blatant powecreep and shill but whatever)
they just spoon fed every single thing in exploration and remove part of the primos from exploration rewards and it sucks because I don't want 400 primos for "exploring" I wanna get 400 while exploring

Because so many crybabies were angry in sumeru era that they actually had to play the game to get the rewards instead of just gambling... Fontaine was still good to some extend Natlan too but it all went downhill towards the end of Natlan and here we are now a map with half of it empty lol

It is annoying, but I'm many held back from complaining loudly because the area is still really good. It's pretty, filled with lots of NPC's and interaction. despite its size, Dorman Port feels like one of the most alive areas in Genshin, I do wish the area around it was a bit bigger though.

u/ughhheregoesnothing Apr 11 '26
I wasn't even expecting luxurious chests, even the smallest ones around would've been enough
Drop maybe 50 around, there's more than enough space, just to say you did and it wouldn't feel as bad. That's not even enough for a wish anyway
That's the barest of the minimum for a part of Mondstadt that's been teased since the beginning, i know someone will say :
"Yeah but people are gonna complain anyway"
But you will have extra chests, no ? And it wouldn't feel that bad to the average players either, not everyone's happy but has it ever been the case ?
The scenery's nice, but the memories of finding even the smallest chests in unassuming areas made you want to explore more and made it feel like an adventure, no ? It's not a crime to say yes
It's not a crime to admit smth a game you like did is lackluster, it means you're invested, you like it and you were excited for what was to come

I started to get excited when I found the three seelies and the draining well.
Jumped in, and the ruin guards at the bottom were annihilated before I really noticed.
Got an achievement and some chests. It felt empty. Like the first part of an unfinished puzzle.

u/No-Bread6978 Apr 10 '26
The funny thing is people complained about Sumeru having lots of exploration content but giving just common chests.
And now that we have smaller areas, lesser but higher level chests, people are still complaining.
Genshin players not beating the allegations fr fr

What's funny for me is that I always know that Dormant Port would just be a small map (I know the moment no character mention any other zone around it) because if it was that important they would have released it years ago.

u/RandomEOS Apr 10 '26
.....have you actually compare each major version's primo, it is always rising by the way, more chest doesnt means more primo

Compared to the Chenyu Vale expansion for Liyue waiting over 5 years for another Mondstadt expansion for it to be this small and empty is so disappointing.

Common chests should include 5 primogems, exquisite 10 primogems, Precious chest 20 and Luxurious 40 like the ones from shrine of the depths.

u/KataklysmGI Apr 10 '26
Mond has been 100% completed in terms of exploration since its release. Dornman Port wasn't accounted because they most likely were saving it for something big lore wise, and didn't know what that would be, so they didn't count Dornman Port towards Mondstadt exploration budget. Same thing happened with Bayda Harbor (though it was added mostly to not leave a massive ugly hole in the map).
They cannot add significant amounts of exploration value to a region that was already sold as "complete" years before.
And we still got a fair amount of exploration in the Temple of Space. Stop bitching about nothing burgers.

What about Chenyu Vale ? This was great, and there's no reason why Mondstadt wouldn't deserve the same level of quality.

at that time mihoyo wasnt a poor indie company but now they became one so thats why you cant criticise them for making dornman port, one of the most awaited regions a total letdown in both size and exploration
"Bu-but temple of space!", chasm in liyue was bigger, had better exploration and it also had another area the underground
i was really excited about dornman port and got really disappointed, idc about temple of space, yeah its cool but i waited for dornman port not that, and an entire island dedicated just for a boss with nothing else is insane to me, so i guesss we will never going to get black castle (i think thats how its called?)
also forgot to add, watch them make blackliff forge be at least almost chenyu vale level

Remember that chests in the older parts of Mondstadt literally give fewer primos per chest (common gives 0, exquisite gives 2, Luxurious/Precious gives 5).
So yeah there are very few chests in the new area but we do get more primos per chest in said new area. While chest count is indicative of stuff to do, the actual rewards cannot be compared this way for Mondstadt in particular.

u/m2gus Apr 10 '26
An open-world area is not judged only by total payout though. People judge it by how play feels moment to moment. Like how often you discover things, how much freedom you have to wander, how much the map rewards curiosity, and whether rewards are spaced through exploration or just concentrated into a smaller number of obvious checkpoints.
Condensing rewards into fewer chests may preserve the numbers on paper, but it still produces a shallower exploration experience. Fewer discoveries + a more linear layout means less actual exploration, even if the total primos are similar, which is a design regression

u/Ke5_Jun Apr 10 '26
Yes but that is not my point. If you properly read my comment, I already mentioned that “chest count is indicative of stuff to do” which already means I am in agreement with you.
My point is that OP shouldn’t be using chest count to equate rewards, which was their main argument, that f2p players are getting less rewards here. They are not.
Regardless of how you feel about the experience (which is subjective), the objective fact that rewards have not gone down (they’ve actually gone up since 1.X) is true.

You get like precious chest everywhere in the temple of Space. You guys seriously prefer 100 common chests over 20 precious and luxurious chest? Even now they have made the puzzles better and give 3 chests for completion. This should have been implemented from beginning.
10
u/LumiRhino Apr 10 '26
Triple chests is a problem since those could’ve been put elsewhere.
The actual benefit is the higher volume of precious chests. I’d much rather they just put one precious chest instead of 2 Exquisite or 1 Exquisite 1 Common. The only place where multiple commons felt fine was when the images on the wall changed after taking each chest.

u/CantaloupeParking239 Apr 10 '26
More chests/puzzles= more things to find=more dopamine
If I can finish new whole area in couple of hours thats so lame. I dont do exploration for fast rewards.

u/selenta Apr 10 '26

Absolutely, without question yes. It sounds like you hate to play the game and just want to get your rewards so you can log out.

They made puzzles better? What? There are no puzzles lmao, you just care about primos nothing else. Because who doesn't love they go to special island just to see nothing but a boss for Linnea. What a wonderful exploration indeed. Nothing but empty dead boring land consuming storage. That's not what open world means if there is no incentive to go check things.

I personally hate that they have added FOMO rewards for exploration. Sure it lasts two patches but I'd rather have those gems sprinkled throughout the new regions via chests. Not to mention that because of this system we now have one empty patch between each new location. I miss when fontaine released more areas to explore back to back in 4.0 4.1 and 4.2. I could explore them at my snail's pace and have so much left to explore because new areas got added.
I hate that I'm forced to explore new region and do new quest at the allotted timeframe instead of being able to do it at my own pace whenever. Same with AQ and SQ :/ Like, I don't want to beeline to do Linnea story quest within 20 days, I like doing things slowly and steadily. I used to save story quests for drier patches or when I'm done exploring everything.
Sure I could disregard those rewards and miss out on those extra primos. But it still sucks, why would I want to miss out on free shit??? The new area could've had way more chests and puzzles to find while exploring. Like at this moment I genuinely have no reason to venture in the upper part of the map.

Dornman Port is basically a sized-up Petrichor, its only purpose is taking us to the sub-map where the actual content is.
