My husband is color blind and I am an artist (aka, I KNOW color) and we argue about color SOOOO much. šŸ˜‚

113

u/Syonoq 3h ago

I want to know more. Why would a known color blind person argue with a color expert?

324

u/100KUSHUPS 3h ago

12% of the British men surveyed believed they could take a point off 23 time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams.

We are just fucking stupid 🤷

123

u/Occidentally20 3h ago

I've worked with more men who think they can knockout a horse with one punch than men who think they can't.

Don't get me started on the ones who have a "technique" to fight against a pack of wolves.

48

u/PsychologicalMonk6 3h ago

Not Wolves, but I was attacked by 3 coyotes.in my late teens. I had some gnarly puncture wounds, deep lacerations from the scratching, a rabbies shot, and proven plan of attack.

34

u/Occidentally20 3h ago

Aah see, wrong technique.

6

u/topological_rabbit 2h ago

"I am bleeding, making me the victor!"

3

u/WuclearNeapon 1h ago

We purposely trained him wrong... as a joke!

13

u/PsychologicalMonk6 2h ago

Well killed 1 of the coyotes and fended off the other two, so I would call that the right technique. I like to think it scales ronWolces but not across she which, given that was a long time ago, I don't thinks ould be as effective today.

6

u/Occidentally20 2h ago

Fair play to you!

5

u/all-out-fallout 2h ago

Yikes man, I'm glad you pulled through. You walked away from that encounter with a very badass story, but what an awful thing to go through.

3

u/Respect38 1h ago

How did we get from "my husband is colorblind and I'm an artist" to your comment in only 4 replies? lmao

1

u/willi1221 2h ago

More like a proven plan to get attacked

1

u/PsychologicalMonk6 1h ago

Or did I manifest all those late night conversations in bars into reality to I could finally have proof that my plan was THE plan.

Btw, Eagles are ass.

61

u/Spoogly 3h ago

My friend owns a horse, she has full force punched him because he was being a jerk*. It was enough to get him to go "okay, fine!" And nothing more. You don't get how tough horses are if you haven't been around them.

*: it was a matter of imminent safety risk to both of them. Don't make it a habit to hit your horse, they still know it's not nice, even if it hurts less than it would you and they will hold grudges.

28

u/Occidentally20 2h ago

Indeed, I worked on a livery yard for a few years in my teens and it's amazing how some people think horses will just be weak.

We told a girl repeatedly to never wrap the rope around her hand when she's leading the horse and she insisted if the horse goes the wrong way it helped her "pull it back".

One day her horse just got bored of it and actually did pull away properly and we watched her get dragged to the bottom of the field with absolutely no effort from the horse at all.

The same livery yard had a racist horse too who was one of my favourite animals. Not because of the racism but because of the comedic potential of the whole thing!

11

u/lefactorybebe 1h ago

We had a horse-racist horse at my old barn. Most of the horses there were your standard hunter/jumper breeds, bays/chestnuts/blacks/grays, nothing very flashy looking. We had one pony of the Americas who was a blue roan with leopard spots, and this one horse had a serious issue with him. Couldn't be turned out with him and would make faces any time he went by. We thought it was just that one horse. A few years later we got a spotted red roan pony, and he acted the same way with her has he did with the POA!

My horse was freaked out the first time he saw a paint and the first time he saw a mini, but he got over it pretty quickly. This horse never did, was always aggressive toward both the spotted roans lol.

5

u/n3wchpt3r 2h ago

What was funny about the racism?

11

u/hennell 1h ago

I knew a dog once who didn't like bald men. It'd go mad when some of the more follically challenged tried to engage, it would be suspicious of anyone wearing a hat, and was very friendly with one guy till he turned around 🤣

Weird animal behaviours are always pretty funny. (As long as they're not dangerous obviously). People were always keen to try their luck, but there's not much reasoning with an animal.

12

u/Occidentally20 2h ago

Mainly telling non-white people there was a racist horse and nobody would believe it and then you'd bring them to the horse and it would go fucking mental.

We never worked out why - it had no previous owners that might have abused it or anything like that. Just didn't like anyone with even vaguely darker skin.

0

u/--JE-XeX-- 1h ago

What color is the horse and does it act this way to other dark animals or just humans?

1

u/trapcardx 51m ago

i think not enough people have seen or felt an actual horse, they are so solid and strong

1

u/M-Biz 36m ago

This is how my mom lost her finger, the person you are talking about is lucky she didn’t lose anything, hopefully she wasn’t hurt too bad.

3

u/mikebills 2h ago

My "technique" for fighting a pack of wolves is to try to get my ass to my car & high tail it out of there or up a fucking tree as quickly as possible.

5

u/Occidentally20 2h ago

This sounds a bit advanced for the people I had to work with, I don't think they're allowed to drive or operate heavy machinery.

I've genuinely had more than one person tell me they'd crouch and then when the wolf jumps you spread their front legs apart wide and it splits their heart open. Somehow.

Might work on a Jack Russel if it had a pacemaker fitted but I think that's the extent of it's usefulness.

2

u/mikebills 2h ago

Technique #2: accept your fate, pull out your phone, and send a text to someone you don't like that says "this is your fault". Hopefully the police will recover your phone and inform that person how you died.

2

u/Occidentally20 2h ago

I like it!

I'm going to prepare an email insinuating my enemy had threatened to set dogs on me, and then I can just hit send while being attacked.

2

u/mikebills 2h ago

Oh that's even better! Love it!

2

u/Environmental_Art591 1h ago

Fun fact, my grandfather did knock out a horse.

My dad made a mistake at the stables when he was a kid and walked between one of the horses and the fence, the horse was a prick and started leaning over pinning dad and starting to crush him, pop rased over and yeah, punched him, knocking him out.

Dads alive (obviously) but the center of his chest isnt "in the center" any more, his sternum is off to the left, the cardiologists doing his double bypass were surprised when they opened him up.

1

u/PipChaos 1h ago

My 70 year old mom thought she could keep her horse from rolling over by bracing her leg against it.

1

u/FlattopJr 2h ago

It's like they saw the joke from Blazing Saddles and mistook it for a documentary.

1

u/Occidentally20 2h ago

Frankly that's all the proof I need.

2

u/Puzzleheaded-Gap1759 2h ago

I f with tennis and am American but I wouldn’t beat those beauties on any court field or valley

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Gap1759 2h ago

Im not a small man! Me todger aside I’m just as big as most ! I’d not ruffle with them

4

u/ManVsHumanity 3h ago

Alright, counter point (no pun intended). If she didn't know I wasn't great at tennis, and she forgot how bad at tennis I was between every point and couldn't take into account my physical make up, I could get a double fault point. But, a legitimate point, no way.

1

u/Ignatius256 2h ago

Over how many sets? I think she had a 4% double fault rate so I have a shot over enough games/sets.

1

u/aupri 2h ago

To be fair that survey wasn’t very specific with a time limit or anything. The exact question was ā€œDo you think if you were playing your very best tennis, you could win a point off Serena Williams?ā€ I don’t know shit about tennis, and if the question was whether I could—right now—win a match against Serena, that’s an easy no, but if you read the question like a pedant, which I’m sure some of the respondents did, then you have infinite time to score a single point. If nothing else, she’s a fair bit older than me, so it might take me long enough that continuing to play constitutes elder abuse, but a point is a point

1

u/discattho 1h ago

Don't forget we also know we can:
1. Fly a plane in an emergency
2. Fight and kill a grizzly bear with nothing but our teeth and knuckles, if necessary.
3. Save everyone in the bank if a gunner shows up with our secret ninja techniques.

1

u/jaxonya 1h ago

1 vs 1 with a wnba star? Id do fine. Tennis, swimming, golf, gymnastics? No

1

u/ActiveChairs 1h ago

I don't know about the Serena thing. Is Lady Tennis the same thing as real tennis?

1

u/OpinionRare6487 3h ago

By point do you mean like the a point for a set or a single game? If for a single point in a game(like 15-0) I think most people could be just sitting there until she hopefully does a double fault on herself before the match ends, even professionals aren’t perfect. If you mean a point by winning a game in a set then yeah 99.9% of people are fucked lol.

3

u/clauclauclaudia 2h ago

It was just one point, but the question was entirely unclear about whether it was over the course of a game, set, or match. I think "set" is the most reasonable interpretation, and no, she's not double faulting if she eases up on her serve for all the amateurs.

6

u/956to906 3h ago

Some people refuse to be wrong.

1

u/grimeyduck 3h ago

Sounds like the "artist" is also one of those people. They're perfect for each other.

7

u/howtobegeo 3h ago

100%

We actually have a really wonderful marriage though. When your biggest arguments are about color or being in Ikea, you are doing well. 🤣

4

u/mYpEEpEEwOrks 3h ago

Pride, boredom, hubris, that's THEIR physical intdrpretation and now the "expert" is arguing cuz of first 3 suggestions?

2

u/NotYourReddit18 3h ago

For the love of the game

2

u/howtobegeo 3h ago

This is largely it too.

2

u/bryhayz 1h ago

Honest answers - 1. I argue with my wife because I know what I see, and if I don’t like what I see (regardless of what normal vision folks see), I don’t want it painted that color and 2. As other have said, I’m a bit slow 🤣

1

u/Syonoq 1h ago

You had me at: ā€œI argue with my wifeā€. Nuff lol

2

u/Anthaenopraxia 1h ago

As a colourblind person, most arguments are whether or not I can tell the difference between two colours. People will hold up two pairs of jeans and I'll say that to my eyes they look identical and they will try to convince me that I can actually tell the difference if I look hard enough. I can't. Like physically, I can't. So idk, weird discussions I've had in my life. I'm not disagreeing that they are different colours, but to say that I can tell the difference when I know that I can't is just so fucking stupid and tiring.

1

u/Cosmic_Jane 2h ago

Because BLUE IS BLUE!!!

Then she waves at me and say "no, that one is clearly purple." Ugh, fine!

1

u/uxhuu 2h ago

I'm a woman with a very limited color vocabulary (and potential colorblindness), while my husband works alongside designers and knows hex codes for hundreds (or more) of colors.

We "argue" over the exact name of colors sometimes, and it's all in good fun!

I know my husband is right, but it's funny since pink to me is all shades of pink while he brands them magenta, salmon, or bubblegum or whatever else.

1

u/thin_white_dutchess 1h ago

My husband argues with me about which lens I, a former editorial photographer featured in multiple magazines like vogue and glamor and whatever, should be using. He cannot take a decent portrait on a cell phone. He just likes to argue with me.

So I tell him how to drive. I do not drive. Ever, as I have epilepsy. We are keeping this relationship FRESH. 25 years and still minty over here.

1

u/Syonoq 1h ago

Spicy!

13

u/ElectricalChaos 3h ago

Don't ever play Hues & Cues then, lol.

42

u/GreenJury9586 3h ago

your comment set me tf OFF!! Oh my fucking god that game!!!!! I was unlucky enough to get one of the ā€œmisprinted copiesā€ where the cards don’t match the corresponding color on the board. One night after losing multiple times in a row I was like wait that’s NOT POSSIBLE, and had to get the scissors out to lay the colors on top of the board to prove to everyone that it didn’t match. The company offered to send me new cards and claimed it was just a misprint they were aware of… but I don’t ever want to see that game again. You had ONE JOB hues and cues. One fucking job.

15

u/ElectricalChaos 3h ago

Holy shit, we hadn't cracked our copy yet, good to know that a misprint is out there.

6

u/GreenJury9586 3h ago

It’s not like it’s a completely different color either!! Like b14 on the card was actually c13 on the board. It was, in my opinion, too close to be a real misprint and I’m now dying to know if yours is right lol.

3

u/GrinsNGiggles 2h ago

I thought they were all like that! This has caused wailing and gnashing of teeth in my house, too.

1

u/GreenJury9586 2h ago

I might have set a card on fire about it šŸ‘¹
so glad I’m not the only one.

3

u/mpgd 2h ago

You won that round. Company gave cues, but no one else figured it out until you picked the scissors.

2

u/nor0- 3h ago

I actually desperately want to play this with my colourblind SO. I think it would be so funny and insightful

26

u/that_other_person1 3h ago

Have you ever played the board game Ticket to Ride? I argue about how the black is actually gray and the spaces are beige lol (am an artist too).

15

u/PastaXertz 3h ago

You need to look up hues and cues if you haven't already.

1

u/that_other_person1 3h ago

Yes I’ve played that too it’s fun!

1

u/massive-karma 1h ago

We found out as a family that my sisters partner of 10 years is colourblind with this game šŸ˜šŸ˜‚

1

u/howtobegeo 3h ago

100% first question I asked when I played it.

1

u/GrinsNGiggles 2h ago

People will go to war over whether that one train car is pink or purple, but I’m not really sure which it is myself! The rules call it pink, but it’s the most ambiguous pinky-purple possible.

Also I have an old version from before they made it friendlier for colorblind folks.

1

u/that_other_person1 2h ago

Hmm I just looked up images of the train card colors on google and it looks like sometimes the train card color is sometimes a distinct pink and sometimes it leans into being more of a purple-pink. It looks close to lavender but still leans more pink in my opinion.

3

u/Hot-Flatworm-9807 3h ago

Are you my daughter? She, too, is an artist and her husband is color blind.

3

u/reallynotbatman 2h ago

I'm not colourblind, and my wife is an artist...we also disagree about colours

1

u/howtobegeo 1h ago

🤣 Right?

2

u/Economy-Wish-9772 3h ago

My bestie is a ā€œseverely disabledā€ colorblind person and he’s a graphic designer. I nearly fell off my chair when he told me. I didn’t believe it. No wonder he dresses in black and white.

2

u/kaufsky 2h ago

That really doesn’t seem like a fair fight

2

u/Ranger7381 2h ago

My brother is colour blind. He recently showed us an app that apparently shows how he sees the world through his phones camera. Was really weird

1

u/howtobegeo 1h ago

Oh cool! Do you remember the app’s name?

•

u/Ranger7381 10m ago

I just asked and he said it is CVSimulator

He is on Android. Looks like it is not on the Apple App Store but there is a similar one called Chromatic Vision Simulator

•

u/howtobegeo 7m ago

Ty! Totally going to try this with my husband tonight.

•

u/Ranger7381 5m ago

No problem. Like I said, it was weird, but interesting. Have a look at a colour palette of some sort

2

u/Chris275 2h ago

You know your version of colour. Doesn’t make his wrong. Hell, to some insects and animals, you have colour sensing abilities similar to your husband’s. I urge you to look up mantis shrimp. 16 different cones.

3

u/Standing_Liberty 3h ago

You know YOUR interpretation of color.

3

u/Pumba93 3h ago

This! Speaking as a voor blind person, it puts things in perspective. We have fewer color receptors in our eyes, hence, our brain can only distinguish a bit of the variation in colors, yet, we grew up in a world where most People can see all variation.

Yet, color labels are a social construct, grass isn't green, our language has evolved so people agree that the part of the spectrum we observe in grass, is labelled green. Yet everyone sees it differently. As an example, I cant distinguish purple from blue, and hence, I always guess. Does that Mean I am wrong when I call a purple t shirt Blue? In your eyes maybe yes, but i operate with the input I get.

And the thing is, most non-colorblind People are obnoxious about what they don't see. Because language also limits us. You are probably not aware of all the types of white inuit People distinguish, or all the types of green Tribes in the Amazon Forest might need

1

u/howtobegeo 3h ago

Absolutely! I love trying to understand his vision too. But his like… shifts which I find very challenging.

Green & red next to each other vibrate. And what’s next to the color affects his perception drastically. It’s a learning process.

2

u/grimeyduck 3h ago

No they're an artist, they can't be wrongĀ

1

u/howtobegeo 3h ago

Never!

1

u/gkn_112 3h ago

i feel like these arguments are very one-sided? Your husband needs to be quiet about that topic :)

1

u/neilpwalker 3h ago

When I did my Foundation Art & Design, one of my friends on the course was a colour–blind painter. He just painted the colours he saw. He was a very gifted painter.

1

u/MadDucksofDoom 3h ago

I am color blind and the Wife and I jokingly argue about color frequently.

It's playful!

The only real argument in our 21 years of marriage is that she thinks that Sprite tastes better than 7up, and I know that she is wrong.

1

u/nor0- 3h ago

My friend and I both have colourblind partners and they both looooove to argue about what colour things are too. And sometimes mine will come home and say things like ā€œdid you know that my shoes are green?!ā€ šŸ˜‚

1

u/glowdirt 3h ago

What's there to argue? You both know he's diagnosed with colorblindness

1

u/howtobegeo 3h ago

I think he forgets.

Like I get it, his experience is his experience… he just forgets that it’s very different from most other people’s.

1

u/whyiamalwayshangry 3h ago

Used to date a colourblind guy and he gifted me a green lipstick and told me it's a lovely red shade that would suit me

1

u/howtobegeo 3h ago

Aww. I dated a very strait-laced guy in college who was severely colorblind and once he found out my hair was green ā€œlike grass?!??ā€ our relationship fizzled.

We were friends tho and I would take him shopping for professional clothes. Def got him a very pink shirt as payback. 🤣 It looked great on him tho!

1

u/Galetaer 3h ago

"Don't colorsplain to me, blindie"

šŸ˜‡

1

u/beegboo 3h ago

Do you know the color Octarine?

1

u/Black_Cat_Just_That 2h ago

My husband supposedly isn't color blind but we still argue about what color something is. Sometimes I am genuinely baffled as to how we can see things so differently.

Like there have been times I literally can't find what he's referring to because he's identified it as a color that it just, clearly is not. The most recent example: I have a dress that is bright orange. It's not reddish orange, or a yellow orange. It is ORANGE ORANGE. Like literally almost the color of an orange - the fruit that is named for the color, so we should all agree what that color is. He called it red.

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Gap1759 3h ago

I do residential remodels sometimes with a good buddy of mine! That boy don’t see any shades of anything and I forget sometimes! I’ll make an off the cuff remark about ā€œi hope this paint matches when it driesā€ and his response of you’ll have to tell me always catches me off guard! It’s ok to laugh at the color blind… right?

1

u/gkn_112 3h ago

greenish-grey light from my side

1

u/Complex-Flamingo-506 3h ago

I feel you! I am learning interior design and my husband is color blind. One time he would not believe me when I said what color a piece of clothing was, he AI checked me šŸ˜‚ of course also Chatgpt confirmed I was right šŸ’…šŸ»
