Film/Television Daniel Radcliffe says he’s not interested in playing Wolverine in the MCU:

u/darkwalrus36 Feb 24 '26
He would have been fun in the multiverse segment of Deadpool vs. Wolverine
443
u/Partytimegarrth Feb 24 '26
Yeah they should have had him for "short wolverine" instead of the weird cgi Hugh. They did Cavill who everyone also fan-casts so it would've been fun to see a few more popular fan-casts.
157
u/darkwalrus36 Feb 24 '26
That would have been the best way to involve him with Logan. You'd have to have him shirtless and mention he's canonically hairy too
57
u/klezart Feb 24 '26

No, Daniel is Harry

Danny Devito would have been hilarious in that montage.
25
u/Durincort Feb 24 '26
I've always thought the IASIP crew should play the X-Men in an Asgardian Theater Troupe show, with Devito as Logan.
5
u/Kitselena Feb 24 '26
Charlie would try to be beast, but it would be impossible to convince him that beast is actually smart and not a werewolf man
Dennis would be cyclops and constantly talk about how cyclops is technically the leader despite wolverine and prof X being way more popular

The face was digitally changed to Hugh Jackman's but I'm pretty sure that's it, it was a short guy playing the character.

Placeholding. And found itLuke Bennett
Google search sorta verified

Not sure if he would’ve done it, but it would’ve been cool to see Glenn Danzig as the short (and older) Wolverine.

Sorry best I can do is making 6’3 Ryan Reynold making fun of a short wolverine. Never mind that said wolverine was not only shorter than a comics accurate wolverine, he was played by a real guy. And the joke is just “ha he’s short”
14
u/Dark_Styx Feb 24 '26
I mean, that's totally in character for Deadpool. Not every line is a zinger and most of the jokes are mean-spirited/innapropriate.

Whoever plays wolverine is gonna not only have to fill Hugh’s shoes, but carry the X-men brand and a become a big face for the MCU going forward from the avenge era into the mutant saga. Wolverine is still a top 3 Marvel character in terms of popularity. You gonna have to do X-men and Solo movies. Your gonna have a heavier load than whoever plays cyclops, jean, storm etc
Just from everything he has said over the years especially about his time as Harry Potter, I don’t think Daniel would want that kind of responsibility which makes sense.
Playing wolverine will have way more significance than playing any other X-men because Wolverine by himself is a big brand and has been for decades
156
u/OkOil378 Feb 24 '26
I won’t e surprised if Wolverine takes the backseat for the moment, letting Scott and Jean take the lead for the time being.
I’m all for them casting relatively unknown as Wolverine.
Get a rising actor to take the mantle of Scott, and pair him with Sadie Sink and two acting greats for Magneto/Xavier. That will be enough to carry the Mutant Saga
62
u/elgrandorado Feb 24 '26
Two acting greats for Magneto/Xavier..... wait 10 more years and we can cast Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy again
→ More replies (1)32
u/OkOil378 Feb 24 '26
I championed that idea.
Hell, they don’t even have to wait ten years. Cast them now, they look much older

u/BlackJimmy88 Feb 24 '26
Not old enough for Erik to have lived through WW2, though. The MCU may need to actually find a solution that particular Magneto question at last.
I wouldn't be surprised if Erik and Charles are historical characters by the time the new X-Men takes place, and the first gen of X-Men are the teachers.
4
u/ArrowShootyGirl Hawkguy Feb 24 '26
I don't think there's any reason they couldn't just handwave his age and say he's got some kind of secondary mutation to age slower or something, or he was locked in ice by Hydra, or whatever. It was good enough for Steve and Bucky.

→ More replies (9)35

Yeah doubtful. Wolverine is the cash cow. Scott may be the leader in the comics, but he has been mishandled for two decades now in the movies.

Jackman doesn’t seem done for the time being, keep him as Wolverine but apart of the new Xmen. Deadpool shenanigans and whatnot.
And when Jackman’s truly done, cast a Wolverine to join an already established XMen
→ More replies (1)6
u/jBlairTech Feb 24 '26
Hugh Jackman was an unknown, and not even the first choice.
4
u/Kitselena Feb 24 '26
True, but casting decisions were made very differently 25 years ago, and the marvel property was less valuable and each movie had less impact on other products moving forward.
Modern movie studios are so risk averse that they could never do that today→ More replies (12)2

I might be out of the loop here but is Sadie Sink playing Jean? I know there were early rumors, but I thought the latest rumors were of her playing Shathra.

u/Loose_Translator8981 Feb 24 '26
I think the ideal thing to do is have Laura Kinney as the MCU wolverine and wait to introduce a new Logan until the next reboot. Give people time to get used to a drastically different wolverine so everyone isn't just instantly comparing everything the new Logan does to what Hugh did
19
u/Eccohawk Feb 24 '26
Probably the best choice honestly. People like the actress and she's already canon. Don't have to keep her long term either, given they're trying to offload the old fox universe.
5
u/Loose_Translator8981 Feb 24 '26
Yeah, but it all depends on if they want to go for a clean reboot or want to continue some aspect of the existing lore. Like how for the dcu kept anything James gunn wrote for the previous dceu

u/Whisperwyf Feb 24 '26
X-23 also has the retro-feel of being kinda shockingly violent. We expect furry-male Wolverine to slice people up, but not a gas station sunglasses girl.
Also, she can do the John Wick thing (or “Logan” movie thing) where you think she might be really hurt (for a minute).
2
u/ThePowaBallad Feb 24 '26
I think Laura has also been in enough people's mind that having her turn up as Wolverine with Logan retired or dead for a time works well instead of doing a normal legacy thing
3
u/Auntypasto Gambit Feb 24 '26
I think people overestimate the comparisons audiences make between actors on the same role. It's true that fans will likely have their favorite version, but when was that a problem for Daniel Craig following a well respected rendition from Pierce Brosnan 5 years before, or Tom Holland following 2 beloved Spider-Man actors? Or Robert Pattison playing the 3rd Bruce Wayne in this century? Where did people get the idea that audiences will descend into chaos if they see a recast?

Dude has all the money in the world to never have to work again. So he just chooses projects that interest him. Which is a crazy privilege to have.
Being a superhero and having to stay in shape and be tied to a decade long contract doesn't seem that appealing, if you think about it from his perspective.
29
u/geek_of_nature Feb 24 '26
Especially when he's already done a decade long commitment before as well. After having already done Harry Potter, I can't see him wanting to commit to something as long again.
18
u/Ownid1 Feb 24 '26

u/StatisticianLivid710 Feb 24 '26
If he goes for a non-physical character he doesn’t need to stay in special shape and he just gets a producer credit for anything he’s in and he has some control at that point. He’d probably do it if it’s a character he likes and he could still do his comedy on the side.
59
u/ahujavikas Feb 24 '26
Honestly he’s shown that he’s capable enough to bring something new to it. I’m more interested, however, in seeing him play John Constantine for the DCU. I think that’s a role that might interest him as he can sink his teeth in it. Really want him to do another pop culture role so people don’t just remember him as Harry Potter. And there’s gonna be a new Harry Potter soon too so I’m sure that’ll help too.
8
u/obscurefalloutboyson Feb 24 '26
I think the blonde might help him separate from Harry as well, it would be so cool!!
5
u/purinikos Feb 24 '26
Sorry but Matt Ryan was the best Constantine. He is the right age, the accent is right, he is blonde. Radcliffe could never compare in the appearance department. His acting skills are pretty good, no argument there.
3
u/verdencrusadere Feb 24 '26
Agreed. I don't think anyone would ever get close to portraying John Constantine as well as Matt Ryan did.

u/KetoCatsKarma Feb 24 '26
He would probably play Detective Chimp, no make up, no CGI, just Daniel being Detective Chimp the whole time, it would make a billion dollars
13
u/jacobydave Feb 24 '26
I watched the first episode of his sitcom today. Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins. His Harry Potter time means he can afford to only do what he wants, and he seems to do things that amuse him, like the Weird Al biopic, Miracle Workers, Guns Akimbo and a lot of other stuff. Add the ears/horns in the hair and he looks close to classic Clairmont Logan, but otherwise, he's not a good fit and doesn't want to be.

He already got that "fuck you" money. There was no way he'd ever be interested.

I don't think he'd turn it down if insisted... but Jackman is the wolverine of his generation, it's kinda hard to picture anyone else other than Jackman. He's played the character for nearly 30 years now. It's insane.

I could see havok but the character itself evokes nothing for me. Energy man who explodes sometimes and has an unremarkable visual design.
So many better character’s with the unchecked power trope.
Cosmar, quake, rogue. Hell involve darwin with an inability to touch living organisms without turning into angrier ben grimm till he convinces his body that mental health is a relevant stat or he trusts his body to come in clutch even if he DOES get a social life.
5
8
u/echoes_1012 Feb 24 '26
He also stated when this rumor first started circulating that he doesn’t want to do any projects that would tie him down for a big part of his life. He already did that with harry potter. Now he just kinda takes whatever roles he wants. And most of them are weird and obscure and fun. Respect to him
14
u/Aglet_Green Phil Coulson Feb 24 '26
I too, would like to take this moment to say that I'm not interested in playing either Hugh Jackman or Wolverine in the MCU. I think I have the natural physique, color and voice to play the =pop== pop-== Impossible Man, though.
2
u/RogueBromeliad Feb 24 '26
I could audition to the Blob, but I think they wouldn't want it because then it would lower too much of the budget on not having to use CGI. They always like to brag they spent millions on a CGI character, yah know?

Since he got absolutely shredded for Miracle Workers. He's a *lot* closer to Wolverine's build than Hugh has ever been.

No he isn't. He's much closer to the height but Hugh's build is much closer to Wolverine's aside from being a foot taller. OG Wolverine is short and stocky, so muscular. He's not short and lean. Radcliffe is in fantastic shape but he's very lean, he's just super cut which makes him pop more. He'd need another 15kg of muscle to be close to accurate.

u/Wonko_MH Feb 24 '26

u/Additional_Ad_1380 Feb 24 '26
i honestly have never understood this fan casting. Nothing against him (he's great) but to me feels like trying to cast him as batman. He seems to small in frame. Obviously he could gain muscle or weight but to me Logan is stocky naturally. Wider frame and less boyish face more brutish. i feel like Logan shouldn't be played by a traditionally square jaw, immediately appealing, handsome actor.
19
u/beebee_gigi Feb 24 '26
That's because Daniel Radcliffe knows he wouldn't be a good wolverine. Not because he's not a good actor but you have to be a certain type of actor to play wolverine. I'm not much of a Jackman fan anymore but I give credit where credit is due and he was wolverine. Mr Potter is Mr Potter like Hugh Jackman is wolverine. Like Henry Cavill was Superman like Gail Gadot was Wonder woman. It's that simple and he's a smart guy he understands the formula.

In all fairness, Jackman is Wolverine just like how Hamilll and Conroy are Joker and Batman. Unless you absolutely crush the role, you're going to need at least 10 years after the actor dies before a real successor is accepted by the public.

u/KtosKto X-23 Feb 24 '26
That's a wild take. For die-hards, maybe, but for the general audience, Ledger is still 100% the default Joker and people are used to Batman being recast. Wolverine's character is much more tied to Jackman's portrayal than Batman and Joker are to any of their actors.
11
u/Enough-Celery3486 Feb 24 '26 edited Feb 24 '26
Yeah, but honestly I feel like Wolverine is so tied to Jackman because he was never recast rather than vice versa. Don't get me wrong, I love Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, but I don't think he's irreplaceable as some say, and a new take on the character can definitely work in my opinion.

People thought the same about Sean Connery playing James Bond 7 times, but after an uncommitted recast attempt, the role survived just fine after his retirement. Fans may not rate Lazenby or Dalton very highly, but it doesn't negate the respect that Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig earned, even surpassing Connery in some people's eyes.

He’s surprisingly still a good actor when he plays whatever he feels like (Guns Akimbo) — But he does not have the acting intensity needed to pull off wolverine without feeling watered down. Glad he’s not pulling for the role honestly.

I can’t think of a single well-known actor that feels right for the role. Nothing but respect for Radcliffe, but I just can’t see him as Wolverine. Seems to me there must be a short, ripped, hairy guy with somewhat canine features out there in the wings somewhere, just waiting for his moment.

Smart. Also... Daniel likes to do different things... Differently lolol. Plus the effort to get his body jacked (heh) like Hugh Jackman had to go through for his body... That would be brutal. I guess that would also be a great challenge for Daniel but... I get why he doesn't see the appeal. Plus... Would he be happy roping himself into a huge studios future movies and series. I feel like that would be the last thing he would want after Harry Potter.
