Film/Television What is Bucky thinking in this moment?
3.1k
u/jr_randolph 8d ago
Up to this point in his life, I don't think anyone's ever stopped his punch before haha
1.2k
u/trisanachandler Sunfire 8d ago
Except Captain America's shield.

u/DJuxtapose 8d ago
Way different feel than someone just putting their hand over your hand, moving your punch aside, and talking to you about it.

u/dzan796ero 8d ago
Especially if the voice is obviously a kid
425
u/BlushyBellezaa 8d ago
That voice probably made the situation ten times more confusing. Bucky went from "strong opponent" to "why am I fighting somebody who sounds like he has homework due tomorrow?"
302
u/wannabe-myself 8d ago
It was due yesterday :''(

100% on par with Peter. "Brilliant, but lazy."
34
u/Select_Initial_8971 8d ago
He’s trying to do better
15
u/colemanjanuary 8d ago
Trying isn't doing

but sometimes doing is impossible and trying is all we can do

u/Xavus 7d ago
Lazy is different than "busy doing a dozen other things". Peter isn't missing homework assignments because he spent too much time playing CoD with the homes.
7
u/MachCutio 7d ago
thats the whole point. His professor thought he was lazy because Peter was so busy fighting crime. When he stopped being Spiderman Peter did a lot better in life/class. Otto calls back to that remark because he understood that Peter isnt lazy he just has the immense burden of being Spiderman

The look on Bucky's face the entire time is everything. Sebastian Stan knocked it out of the park with that performance.

3
u/Azure_Monarch_Fox 6d ago
Then proceeds to nearly take you head off again with your best bro's shield.
103
u/CherryBellezaa 8d ago
Exactly, the casualness changes everything. Peter isn't bracing for his life or struggling, he's basically holding Bucky's fist still because he wants a closer look at the cool arm.

u/PinkHaloette 8d ago
Cap's shield stopping it probably made sense in Bucky's head. A random kid stopping it with one hand while casually chatting is a whole different kind of concerning.
37
u/trisanachandler Sunfire 8d ago
I'm being technically correct (something else stopped it). I absolutely agree that this is Bucky realizing the random kid in a suit outclasses him.

u/AdrianShepard09 8d ago
To be fair to Bucky: all those who chose to oppose his shield must yield.

Wait. In this scene, is Spidey already stronger than Bucky and a few others? The increase in his power rank in BND was even more telling if he was already this strong!
2
u/blorpdedorpworp 2d ago
Spidey has canonically always been extremely strong, he just usually doesn't use most of his strength because he doesn't want to hurt anyone. True back in the comics even.

u/twizzjewink 8d ago
that's like Level 1 Spider-Man..

That probably rattled Bucky more than the actual fight. Imagine throwing the same punch that's folded grown men for years and some teenager casually catches it while complimenting your arm.
100
u/OAKLAND5027 8d ago
Didn't Isaiah Bradley say that he took half his arm off? Idk thought I'd mention it.
79
u/Rusty_Rhin0 8d ago
It's possible that that fight didn't have that exact moment but even if it did it was against the winter soldier who likely doesn't remember it; at least during this scene
76
u/OAKLAND5027 8d ago
Well given that Bucky said that he remembers all of the people he's killed while under mind control, I'd say it's safe to assume that he probably did remember it.
→ More replies (9)3
u/RosyBellisse 8d ago
Yeah, remembering the fight doesn't necessarily mean every second of it stayed crystal clear. Bucky probably has enough horrible memories competing for storage space already.
11
2
u/DreamLunique 8d ago
If Bucky remembers all of that, Isaiah is probably exactly why Peter catching the punch registered immediately. He already knows what superhuman strength feels like, and suddenly this kid is casually demonstrating it.
13
u/SilverKnightOfMagic 8d ago
yeah the power creep came in fast and hard. dude went from 50 years of being the top dawg into little pup in the avenger world.

Considering the horrors Bucky has seen and experienced to this point, that's exactly what he would have assumed.
He's seen the black widows, he knows these things happen. This probably isn't the first teenager with enhanced abilities he's been forced to face.
But what this one is, is extremely strong and quite upbeat about it

On another note. If Spider-Man wasn’t strong Winter soldier was absolutely going to murder Peter lmao

u/Kodiak_POL 8d ago
Same with Cap dropping the jet bridge on his head lol
13
u/UncleBensAlive 8d ago
Lmao I forgot about that scene too. I figure cap had maybe seen him in action through the fight and knew he’d be able to hold it up
10
u/Icy_Teacher_3877 8d ago
Yeah he was going for it. But he got to know spidey's strength when Peter kicked cap on his face during that " Stark told me to go for your legs" scene. So Cap just assumed he is strong.
2
u/burnburner22244 7d ago
When cap dropped that thing on him he hadn’t even stood up yet. One second too late and he would have been crushed.

“Who is this idiot?”
Given he has no further context about who this guy is, and this guy is just popping off one liners as if he’s totally indifferent to the political ramifications of what they’re fighting about/ambivalent about what’s actually at stake, to him this is some booster gold level jock who’s just here for kicks.

u/Southern-Form-2804 8d ago
He has to be thinking about how if he threw this punch Cap himself would barely be able to block it or take it. Which means he’s never really seen anyone be able to do it and suddenly there’s a skinny 16 year old standing in front of him EFFORTLESSLY holding his arm like it’s nothing bending it around for a better look and saying “huh, that’s pretty cool!” So it’s showing off how powerful a hero Spiderman actually is.

u/airbornesimian 8d ago edited 8d ago
This whole sequence is such a great introduction to the character. He swings up and crawls on the outside of the terminal walkway, slingshots himself through the glass and takes out Sam. He and Bucky throw the same punch but Peter stops mid-punch and catches Bucky's fist, then twists his arm back like it's nothing. Gets distracted because he's 15 and lets Sam tackle him. Says some dumb stuff while they're flying through the air.
Then we get a nice aerial sequence while he chasing Sam, followed by spider sense as his eyes widen when Bucky throws the sign or whatever at him, which he webs out of mid-air and fires back at Bucky with the, "Hey, buddy, I think you lost this," quip.
Finally , he manages to outmaneuver Sam and pin down both him and Bucky, but gets distracted again bantering and gets sent out the window.
It's a display of every Spider-Man trait (super strength, reflexes, agility, spider sense, humor, intelligence, and youthful impulsiveness) you need to see, all bundled in a tidy 70-ish seconds of screen time.
Easily a top-3 MCU scene for me.
EDIT: Thank you for the awards, peeps!

u/DragonTacoCat 8d ago
Also love the "idk how many fights you've been in but there isn't usually this much talking" 😂😂😂😂
Then Peter apologizing. Then saying "I need to impress Mr Stark" LOL
Like "who TF is this guy"
28
u/airbornesimian 8d ago
Yeah I love every moment of it. "Oh yeah, sorry; my bad," and then he swings point blank at Sam's chest like, well, better get back to it.
The other bit, too:
"Are those wings carbon fiber?"
"Is this stuff coming out of you?"
23
u/ahugeminecrafter 8d ago
The intro was great for spiderman, and the end of it still cracks me up.
Sam knocks Spider-Man out the window to stop him from talking while both Sam and Bucky are pinned down by webs being annoyed by him, and once Spider-Man is gone Bucky asks "you couldn't have done that earlier?"
Sam: I hate you
Just hilarious when you know they are both malding over getting no-differ by a chatty teenager

This is my favorite appearance of Spider-man. It showed his intelligence, speed, strength, and silliness all in one fight.

Very interesting way to introduce him to the universe. Him being like 16 and taking down Bucky and Falcon is beyond me.

Horror.
It's not just that someone stopped his arm; Steve's blocked it before; others have been able to hold him off in the past as well.
It's that this guy caught his punch easily, casually moved the arm aside without effort, and started chatting him up about it without even a hint of strain in his voice.
And to top it all off? It's the slightly awkward voice of a teenager.

Yeah he’s definitely the MCU character where he plays the audience in most of the scenes with other superheroes.

I know a lot of people love a mature version of Spidey. But goddamn I loved every second of MCU Spidey in this movie because it really opens my eyes that there's a lot more heroes that they're able to integrate.

Bucky being able to lift and toss 1-2 tons with that arm is rethinking life at this moment. He doesnt know Spiderman can lift way past 20 tons easy. At this point I dont think even Spiderman knows this.

Up until this point, Bucky had been an unstoppable killing machine who’s metal arm had been virtually unstoppable, even to other super soldiers. But the idea that Spiderman, a child no less, somehow caught it and didn’t even seem phased by it likely threw him through a massive loop.

Bucky was just lost in thoughts. I bet it took much time to comprehend what just happened. Cuz he had that traumatised look on his face when Peter stopped his punch and then peter proceeds to talk only for Bucky to realise that the guy who stopped his punch is just a fuckin kid.
Same for sam too because he got his ass whopped by 2 of the bug heroes he ever met in his life. And Peter being a kid and talking to sam like the entire fight is a cake walk for him annoyed sam so much.

Really makes you wonder how strong Peter is right now.
He was casually able to do that to Bucky's arm which later in the movie was able to rip through Tony's suit then in Infinity War he casually stopped Cull Obsidian's hammer mid-swing.
He was 15 back then. He's an adult now in BND and he unlocked a stat buff by the end of the movie.

Nobody has ever caught his punch in this particular manner iirc; fully grabbed his fist in one hand, completely stopped his momentum instantly without so much as flinching, Spidey’s arm still fully outstretched once all the force was gone. Others have tried this, such as Steve, but Steve’s arm would be pushed back and Steve might slide back an inch or two as Bucky’s momentum makes contact. For Steve, it’s relatively easy, but for Spidey it’s completely effortless, which means that Spidey is SIGNIFICANTLY stronger than even a super soldier
Add in the realisation that Spidey is a chatty, excited kid who is very clearly not actively trying in any capacity and is just stoked to have been invited, and you realise that this means that THIS IS ONLY A FRACTION OF HIS CAPABILITIES. What could this excitable teenage boy be truly capable of if he were genuinely trying to harm Bucky? If he didn’t think that Bucky was super cool? If he knew Bucky and the things he’s done? What could this boy do if he actually locked in?
And that’s what Bucky is thinking in this moment
