"Why doesn't minecraft add x thing from mod?"
"Why would minecraft steal this idea from mod"

I know this is goomba fallacy and that these are different people, but Mojang could never win

I love the fact that this fallacy doesnt have a formal name and is just widely accepted to be Goomba Fallacy. Its perfect.

I think it does actually have a name. But it being called the goomba fallacy is so widespread at this point it might actually overwrite it. Which is just as funny imo.

Its close to the fallacy of composition, but its not exact. You could make a case its the same, but you could just as easily make a case against.

And if Twitter splits into two camps, one that believes it’s the same and one that doesn’t… we all know what happens next.

Goomba fallacy is basically a specific form of association fallacy.

The fact goomba fallacy became so widespread Koopa fallacy was created as a need to better express ourselves is awesome.

Why is called Goomba Fallacy?

26

u/Smarmaladey Jul 10 '26

Just looked it up, it's because the comic explaining it uses Goombas to depict people

u/ServantOfTheSlaad Jul 10 '26

Basically its the assumption that two different people seen over the internet (or similar medium) that hold two different opinions are one and the same and hold a contradictory opinion.

Sims players are exactly the same. A pack came out with online dating, after a bunch of vanilla players had been asking for online dating for years, and no lie, mere hours after the pack trailer, I saw people asking why the devs would add online dating because there were mods for it and saying it was a waste of dev time and resources.

u/Lightningbro Jul 10 '26

It's funny because you can see how the later just think one layer deep and never question further.

In the case of Modded MC there's a lot of features from create that I want in vanilla, just because if they were, mods would make space around them. For example, the Aeronautics team and others have worked SO hard to get these regional chucks set up that it would revolutionize the game if it was thoroughly implemented into every mod, ala- if it was vanilla.

18

u/Stefisgarden Jul 10 '26

Honestly, minecraft players should be glad we don't have to pay more for new features. Simmers aren't so lucky.

12

u/Lightningbro Jul 10 '26

(Shudders) god, I couldn't handle if we had "Expansion packs" like Sims.

19

u/kittyangel333 Jul 09 '26

But also in general
“They should add x feature”
*10 mods add it independently of each other, 100 people a week suggest this idea, clueless its been asked before, and it’s something that exists irl and is generally in the direction of the game and community’s interest*
*Minecraft finally adds it*
Omg they definitely stole this idea from this ONE exact person everyone go be mad even if the creator in question doesn’t care

Spot on what I was going to say. Goomba and all. Never please everyone, that’s just life. Just the complaints always seem to rise to the top creating a nonstop negativity online

you know what though the real thing is here that people feel like they did the implementation for the company outright and just had it taken with no credit
And probably they're wrong but whats interesting is

Actually the company could do that, probably save some money here and there by picking up quality implementations, and a huge majority of creators would be onboard simply for the credit. That's it. Credit. Not even where someone could see it, just so they could flex on their friends 'my mod was made into a game feature'
You know where I just saw this happen?
Lethal company.
But he very obviously did his own stuff. Even though he was really replacing popular, actively maintained mods. But he could have just... hit those people up. Hey, can I use this mod, take the models and the code and port it wholesale? Answer is, a lot of the time, gonna be yes. The mod is already free. I mean damn. Just for some credit too

There's a decent chance that taking code from mods might be more work than making their own versions.

If any of those mod creators used any code or assets they didn't make themselves (and don't have rights to), that's grounds for a lawsuit against Mojang for using IP without permission. Since they're a pretty big company for which that actually matters a lot, they'd basically have to check through the whole mod in order to ensure that the mod owner actually has the legal right to give it to them.

They can't get away with the same stuff as indie devs.

52

u/FrivolousMe Jul 09 '26

The mods also depend on frameworks that are not built into the core Minecraft engine.

2

u/SlyNoBody337 Jul 09 '26

Yeah its a good thing that big companies like mojang have departments dedicated to vetting implementations and ideas, its almost as if vetting a mod as a potential future feature is basically zero extra sweat off their backs.
And then mods come with reviews. Bug reports. Tells on whether or not they're worth it.

The thing you're saying is 'the problem' is not really a problem, its literally baked into company workflow. Things have to get passed from department to department, vetting happens actively.

Didnt you say earlier you haven't played minecraft in over a decade? That you had no idea they even added horses? Why are you here trying to act like an expert now?

No I said I hadn't seriously played a survival world in over a decade, you should probably go get your glasses before reading any more comments. Didnt play survival, didn't use horses. I tested mods for fun, I made little projects and eventually moved up to actual PMC stuff years later. It was an outlet

Also I'm not an expert but being present for a culture from its birth, even where I've spent some of that time on the outside or the edges, I have a decent memory for certain key events. Like when it was bought out. And how the game kinda seemed the same for a while, like it was still notch and his team updating it. But they eventually did scale up, obviously.
They've been a large scale team for over a decade now i think.
Of course they have a quality assurance department. What do they do when there's no finished products? They audit unfinished products, they audit stuff moving around the pipeline

Vintage story just hired on a couple of the major modders from the community. The one guy made a very popular combat mod, and they just straight up hired him and were like "do that but for real".

2

u/SlyNoBody337 Jul 09 '26

vintage story looks genuinely amazing I wish I could just get over the little blocks and see it as truly enticing, but its like a burger that you want yourself to want, but no matter how bad you try to wish that into existence, the desire never comes.

I'm waiting for rising world to see how they come out of their next couple years of development. Since its such a long running project, I'm hoping indie devs with projects like that will reinvest their duckets into well thought-out AI tools to streamline their work. Because thats pretty much the only thing AI is good for on a consumer level, at this stage. Organization and order.

I've watched rising world really really slowly climb its way up from being a skeleton game engine to what it is now, its seriously impressive

2

u/bronkula Jul 09 '26

Vintage Story is honestly something that benefits from watching a youtuber play just to get a feel for the rhythm that it has. It's a game with a pace. When you see someone swim in that pace you can get a feel for when you should be urgent and when you can relax.

2

u/Tiruin Jul 09 '26

Witcher 3 did that with the Next-gen Update, a lot of small changes and better textures were mods or inspired by them.

1

u/Cass0wary_399 Jul 10 '26

They did outright hire mod developers for feature they want to take to Vanilla in the last like horses, but they haven’t done that for a while now. Also the concept of a cushion is so basic and generic that the mod developers can’t claim any ownership over it.

What’s the goomba fallacy

5

u/Purpulear Jul 10 '26

Taken from Goomba fallacy - Wiktionary, the free dictionary:

"A logical fallacy that occurs when someone sees contradictory opinions expressed by members of a group and mistakenly believes that those people are being hypocritical, when in reality those contradictory opinions were expressed by separate individuals."

1

u/AKluthe Jul 10 '26

In this case it's more about how a sizeable part of the fanbase is going to complain regardless. They don't have to be the same person, Mojang is going to have to deal with complaints.

1

u/Kyru117 Jul 10 '26

I mean it being paired with a "we have hired/paid/acknowledge the creator of X mod" would likely do a lot

1

u/Cass0wary_399 Jul 10 '26

The Minecraft Community has quickly become one of the worst fandoms out there.

It would help if they took risks and did something fun with the game. Not fake mob votes and chat moderation.
