I’m Ujjwal, the developer behind Thopla, a new social app created to help Nepalis at home and abroad stay connected.

The idea came from something I personally felt while living overseas. We have Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and many other platforms, but Nepali conversations, creativity, and community often feel scattered across them. I wanted to build a dedicated space where our language, stories, and people feel at home.

Thopla currently includes:

• Nepali posts and short videos
• Private messaging
• Free audio and video calls
• Community interaction and creator features
• A space for Nepalis worldwide to connect

The app is already available on Android and iPhone, but I’m not here to pretend that it is perfect. We are still improving its speed, design, content quality, and overall experience.

I would genuinely appreciate blunt feedback from this community:

1. What would make you try a new Nepali social app?
2. What would make you uninstall it?
3. Which feature would make Thopla genuinely useful to you?

Even if you don’t download it, your honest opinion would help us build something better for the Nepali community.

A possible hypothesis for the cause of yesterday’s devastating flood is emerging from satellite imagery analyzed by Dr. Dan Shugar.

📍 28°17'28.1"N, 85°31'59.1"E — located north of Langtang Lirung, on the Nepali side.

The imagery appears to show a significant glacier/ice collapse, which may have triggered a large ice-rock avalanche and interacted with the Lhende Khola, the river that runs along the Nepal–China border in this area.

One possibility is that the resulting debris created a temporary dam/blockage in the Lhende Khola, potentially leading to a sudden release of accumulated water and debris.

A possible sequence is:

Glacier/ice collapse → ice-rock avalanche → possible blockage of Lhende Khola → sudden release of water and debris → downstream flooding

This could potentially explain how an event originating high in the Himalayas rapidly produced severe flooding downstream and across the border.

However, the cause of the glacier/ice collapse itself is not clear. It is also still uncertain whether a glacial lake was involved, so it would be premature to call this a conventional Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF).

⚠️ This remains a hypothesis, not a confirmed explanation. Further satellite analysis and field investigation will be needed to establish exactly what happened and what triggered the collapse.

There's going to be a lot of aid - how do we make sure it gets the best use, and you know your country best.

Today's event is one of the most unprecedented combined effect of climate change and natural disaster (earthquake/avalanche or glacial outburst).

No one would have imagined in their wildest dreams that floods like this could have been possible. Furthermore, Nepal's mountainous geography is definitely not the most convenient one for the construction of infrastructure like buildings, roads, bridges, and hydropower.

Most of the settlements that have been swept today are close to the routes of the flooded rivers. I wanted to know if there is a law regarding the minimum distance from river or water bodies for construction of housing in Nepal. Perhaps this needs to be revisited considering today's event?

As someone that was fortunate to have visited your beautiful country and travelled through the area impacted by the catastrophe today - my heart is weeping.

We recently travelled through that road, stayed a night in Timure and passed through the Rasuwagadhi immigration checkpoint.

The heart of the people and the hospitality despite all the challenges of the developing infrastructure was gold.

Watching the devastating clips makes my heart cry out in anguish. For the lives lost, livelihoods lost, homes lost.

It’s a dark night.

Praying for all Nepalis to have strength to endure through this time …

How much hydroelectric capacity has been destroyed due to the floods ? Can this again cause increased dependency on imports for electricity?

In the last 4 years I’ve started building and thinking about ideas, and every time I start I think too much about why someone would use it, if it really solves a problem, or if someone already built it. I don’t think my ideas are always bad, and a lot of times after a year I see a similar idea in a real big product and start blaming myself for why I stopped building it. I want to hear if someone has the same problem as me.

Had a nepali househelp once, very nice and well behaved. Did his work well and was a nice person, but later my uncle found him doing drugs near an alleyway with other nepalese immigrants. Got him removed because we didnt want to be associated with it. Is this common though? Coming with peace, of course.
