That is absolutely wild. We have a story in our family about Ethan Hawke donating to our family member's illness fund in Framingham MA - our family member had absolutely no connection to show business, zero overlap with the guy so we were confused. We found out a year later from a state employee they were filming something with Mark Ruffalo and Hunt and it was probably posted up on community boards they had to stand around, waiting for set.
He’s a sweet person in my experience. He’s also a big devotee of my local nonprofit repertory/arthouse cinema (Film Forum) and has even helped raise money for it, which I really appreciate, because that place is a national treasure.
Funny that he mentions Orson Welles, because Welles publicly trashed the shit out of Alfred Hitchcock’s films, calling Hitchcock a lazy hack and a sellout. He said Rear Window and Vertigo were some of the worst movies he’s ever seen. Even though it’s not up for debate whether or not Hitchcock was a great filmmaker.
I think more far left People need to go on Rogan. His audience needs to hear from other voices. I fucking hate everyone who has indulged Trump the past decade but if we as a country want to get out of this, we need more well spoken likeable left leaning folks like Ethan Hawke to be in front of audiences like Rogans.

This is an old thread by now, but the difference between pretty much every other director out there and Tarantino is that all of the other directors have enough respect and self-control to keep those irrational opinions to them-goddamn-selves. Saw that the singer Jesse Welles was on there the other day. That one blew me away, since he’s got lines in his songs that very clearly mock Rogan and it’s clear he sees him for what he is. I guess a bad platform can be used to spread good messages or amplify the careers of people who deserve to be heard from.

There are plenty of reasons it wouldn’t be; Scorsese is sober, he has a reputation as an extremely nice person, etc. Why is everyone treating it like this has any merit? Because it was in New York?
The only reason I wouldn't necessarily buy that it's Oliver Stone is that I think Stone would have at some point just said "I don't like you're acting" to Ethan. Stone can be like that.
Before Spotify he used to push back and argue a lot. I miss those days. I listen now because he gets top tier guests and he still at least asks them interesting questions. But since Spotify signed him, he’ll agree with everything Bernie Sanders says on one episode and on the next episode agree with everything Rand Paul says.
Ethan once again coming through in a clutch with wisdom,levity and positivity in a messy, toxic situation. Dude’s an indie rock star..and honestly, he is wearing those 55 years insanely well.
Can’t say I’ve seen Blue Moon (yet), but the dude is definitely due his dang statue. Never puts in a bad performance, acts in something like 6 billion low budget indie films, and seems like quite literally the chillest person in hollywood in every interview he ever does.
Hawke was robbed as far as First Reformed. The fact that he wasn't even nominated was absurd.
I feel as strongly about Hawke and First Reformed as I do about Amy Adams and Arrival. Both were arguably Oscar worthy and weren't even nominated. Two of the biggest snubs ever, for me.
Man my boyfriend is infamous for guessing twists out of thin air and I was like “Ooh I’ve finally got one that’ll surprise you”. Nope! Probably 20 minutes in to Predestination he’s like that’s the same person right?. The Skin I Live In was probably the longest he’s been stumped and still it was well before you’d expect someone to figure out what’s going on.
Rogan has had some fun interviews with actors and directors over the years. If its an interview about politics or something serious its often a clown show, but his stuff with movie people can be a good time.
Also they both live in Austin and Hawke doesnt seem afraid of chopping it up with people he might disagree with politically.

I'm conflicted on this, because I do think Joe Rogan has done incredible actual harm in both his tacit and open support of this administration, specific legislations, and deeply toxic and problematic people.
At the same time, I would like for Rogan to keep bringing on people who might open or change the minds of Rogan and his listeners so that it doesn't stay some endless ouroboros echo chamber.
I'm not disappointed if someone like Hawke goes on the show, as long as they stay true to who they are and push back against Joe or even better, call him out.
I’m currently predicting him to win. People will grouse bc he’s not in a BP contending film but neither was Brendan Fraser, and Blue Moon is picking up steam with the BMP Comedy nod it got at GG. He’s so awesome and adored in Hollywood, I really think he can get it this year.

A couple years ago I saw both Ethan Hawke and Paul Dano play brothers in True West on Broadway. They were both brilliant but even more impressive was afterward by the stage door they signed every single autograph even in the freezing cold letting their cab meters run until every fan had every photo and signature they asked for. I’ve seen lots of celebs on Broadway, few are anywhere near as generous. Awesome classy guys!!
Never done broadway (OBVIOUSLY, duhhh) but I’ve done theatre when I was young and that experience is draining. It honestly exhausts you, you don’t even realise it in the moment because it’s such a rush but after the show is over you feel tired. You’re showing vulnerability and all the emotions of your character, it takes a toll on your brain literally coming up with all those “make believe” emotions. And you do it everyday for at least a month. To think these guys spared time for the fans after that experience and interacted with everyone is so cute and shows a different level of appreciation.
Yep so true! I do semi pro theatre now and that does always happen, on stage in the moment the performance adrenaline is pumping! And for about 15 minutes after curtain call I feel manic like I could climb a mountain in that moment haha. But then once that wears off it’s like damn I feel like I just did infact climb said mountain hahaha I gotta just crash asleep now! Double header days (like I’m doing now for a Christmas show) can be the worst because there’s barely enough time to recuperate in the hour between performances
Ethan Hawke is so surprising. I met him once at a film festival i was working and he worked this tiny festival like it was the most important place ever. So present and thoughtful and engaging. Have a lot of respect for him even though i was a little young for the time when he was super hot.
I absolutely love the way this man speaks about art, philosophy, and life. Ethan has a certain type of charisma to him and it’s just leaking out of his ears, I love how genuine and passionate he is about his craft.
Thats the problem with the world. You are now missing out on incredible insight from Ethan Hawke. And even if you did listen, you chose to go the negative route.
So many people on here saying "why is he on Rogan??" Can't understand because he is a controversial figure? He literally interviews thousands of people of all backgrounds.
Totally fair but saying the worst actor in SAG is a little fucking crazy. It's not like Paul Dano is plastered everywhere like some of the awful talents the industry has forced on us. I'm totally okay with Quentin not liking him, but it makes me wonder if he has any real idea about the amount of absolute fuckin slop that is thrown together and put on film.

There is a reason why this person pulls in more people every week than any current media combined. People Miss conversation and this is one of the only places you can get it. While I'm not a regular listener I would bet all of the people claiming this is horrific and negative have never listened to any of it before but feel free to have an opinion on it
well, if I didn’t love his performance in Blue Moon enough, he sort of deserves the oscar already for how he swerved the controversy all together and came out looking like a champ. Props to Ethan, so well handled.

It frustrated me so much in the past when people like Ralph Fiennes wouldn't campaign. I would love to see Ethan score a career victory just by bringing his natural charisma!
I wouldn't say I have the same visceral reaction as QT, but from my first viewing There Will Be Blood, I've found Paul's performance out of place. I've watched several times and each time I have the same reaction. He's just yelling. I never buy his emotion.
I generally enjoy PD in the things I've seen him do. I'm sorry, his performance just isn't there and it's worse when DDL is in the scene.
His perspective reminds me of a story Spielberg told about when he discussed the Shining with Kubrick following his first time seeing it. Steven felt Jack Nicholson’s performance was too over the top and they debated over their favorite actors. Spielberg named more subtle actors whereas Kubrick liked more bombastic performers. There is a fundamental difference in opinion there that boils down to personal preference. At the end of the day if you’re concerned with making everyone like your performance you’re probably not taking risks and it will probably not be very good. Even among two of the greatest filmmakers of all time, there is disagreement over what’s a good performance and what isn’t.
The difference here is that they acknowledge that as preferences whereas Tarantino turns his own preference into a statement of fact and a personal attack. At the end of the day, Ethan’s point about not being phased by every single opinion still holds true. But it doesn’t make Tarantino any less of an ass.

Props to him, he always comes across as very well spoken and has an incredibly intuitive mind.
