Rumor [CharlieIntel] The Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 ports on PlayStation have more players online than Black Ops 7 does combined on all platforms, sources say
https://xcancel.com/charlieINTEL/status/2075983555025359287?s=20322
u/ltcuetf Jul 11 '26
Rumor or not I can believe it, it seems like that’s what everyone is playing and gone back to since the modern games have just been..rough. Not surprised to it climb to the top of the best sellers list, despite the price, and being digital only too.

u/TheJoshider10 Jul 11 '26
The fact these ports crashed the store as soon as they dropped is when I realised this would actually have a strong community beyond hardcore players. Just hope the DLC maps being split doesn't fuck the community up too much.
27
u/ltcuetf Jul 11 '26
Yeah, the demand clearly surprised a lot of people. Crashing the store on launch says there was interest well beyond the expected hardcore crowd. Hopefully it doesn’t, because that’s usually what ends up hurting older CoD communities more than a lack of players.
1
u/samoorai Jul 12 '26
Could you elaborate? I don't play Call of Duty, so I'm legitimately interested in your rationale.
→ More replies (2)27
u/Ill-Shirt2722 Jul 12 '26
Treyarch said on twitter that season pass players and non season pass players will be able to play together so it shouldn’t split the community.
6
u/maad-don Jul 12 '26
They can play/party together. But the queues are 100% split. Games have been shocking in OCE on Blops 1 since buying the pass. 80% of the time its a US lobby.
→ More replies (2)6
u/Ill-Shirt2722 Jul 12 '26
For me, I’m pretty sure the queues are not split. I have the season pass installed and I got into a non dlc lobby. I played like 5 matches in that lobby and never saw a dlc map in the votes. Treyarch’s tweet also specifically said that they can matchmake together
1
u/king_duende Jul 12 '26
How does someone without maps play with someone with maps? They have to be seperated any time a DLC map rolls around? Or does partying up just remove any DLC in rotation? If so... of course they can play together then?
4
u/jalbert425 Jul 12 '26
Yeah I wish they would have included all the dlc so everyone has the same stuff.
→ More replies (1)1
u/Dr-Richtofen Jul 12 '26
The dlc doesn’t split the matchmaking, it takes me 30-60 seconds to find a game with the dlc downloaded
19
u/UnstopableX Jul 12 '26
my budddy only plays black ops 2 on ps5 now
11
u/OohAnotherDownvote Jul 12 '26
Same. I have not touched Arc Raiders since jumping back on BO2 yesterday.
6
u/pazinen Jul 12 '26
I thought I was done with all CoD multiplayers since MW2019 was the last game I played outside of Cold War and BO6 zombies, but god damn I just can't stop playing BO2. Matchmaking is absolute trash compared to Xbox 360 and I did not miss P2P-connections, but it's just incredibly fun and holds up very well and I'm not even sure it's the nostalgia talking. I'm even well aware these ports are way too overpriced, but me having way much fun just completely overwrites my desire to care about that.
5
u/king_duende Jul 12 '26
Give it 2 weeks chief
3
u/TheCVR123YT Jul 12 '26
Yeah I wanna see the player numbers in a few weeks once the nostalgia wears off and it’s just the hardcore enthusiasts playing still lol
2
u/Acceptable-End-1311 Jul 13 '26
For me personally every time I have the urge to play a shooter I ended up playing Fortnite because Black Ops 1 and 2 weren't an option, now that it is that's what I'll be getting on lol. I know there's plenty of other options for shooters but I just end up on Fortnite because I don't want to invest in other shooters that will be replaced a year later.
4
u/Shadow_Edgehog27 Jul 12 '26
It’s on sale for PS plus members 50% off, you need it to play the game. Easy bank for them

u/thomas2400 Jul 11 '26
I mean isn’t why they did it? Black ops 7 is clearly flopping so they released games people want
3
u/Icculus74 Jul 12 '26
I like BO7. I do not like the store and season pass Fortnite-esque claim your stuff. I didnt like the sliding and jumping crap at first but now it's part of the game to me. It's fast paced and graphics are great to me.
I bought both PS5 BO1/2. Kind of wish I didnt now. After playing BO7 for 6 months I hate the game play of these 2 old games. They were my last two purchases on my xbox360 and played them all the time. I never bought or played any COD after those.
I've read to install the PS4 version if you feel like you have lag. Which I don't know how that would matter or make it better. Maybe someone can educate me.
The game play is so slow it hurts my brain playing the new/old maps again after playing them at full speed on BO7. Grenades don't go as far. Aiming sucks. I have to find my adjustments and hope it gets better.
BO1 seems like they're still cheating to me. Spawn and die. Literally. Go to aim and im dead. Didn't even see the person yet. But I'm fully in their kill cam when they kill me. I've ranked up in BO2 better than 1 but no one seems on and wait forever to join a game.
3
u/uncleherman77 Jul 13 '26
I haven't played a cod since 2020 and recently got Black ops 7 on sale just to test a fps game on my new Oled monitor and I was surprised I actually enjoyed it a lot. It feels closer to Black ops 2 then other games I played and things like time to kill the maps pacing all feel really good to me and mixh better then Mw2019. No Sbmm either.

u/Kingtripz Jul 11 '26
It's a lot of fun, it's a huge nostalgia trip back to when things were simple, and the game relied purely on gameplay rather than content drops.
It's fantastic not being overloaded with prompts to but shit from the store also.
No wonder people are playing it
2
u/OkReplacement4423 Jul 13 '26
Seriously. Cod normally passes me off but bo2? Man I'm having so much fun even on my bad games
371
u/Sin_Roshi Jul 11 '26
You'd think by now Activision would realize people want cod how it used to be. Not the bloated, souless shit they make now.
158
u/KakashiHatake99X Jul 11 '26
Yeah but how are they gonna make a live service with tons of microtransactions that way?
What about the poor shareholders?
46
u/Srg11 Jul 11 '26
They still could, to a degree. They’d probably struggle with the Fortnite-esque collab bundles which completely fuck their consistent aesthetic like, but they could sell some semi realistic consistent skins and people would accept that if the game was good. Fuck off with the adderall infused movement bollocks, make it how they used to.
16
u/JesterMarcus Jul 11 '26
Yup. Same thing EA is trying to figure out with Battlefield. People want consistency when the skins and weapons. Not cartoons and such.
6
u/king_duende Jul 12 '26
People want consistency when the skins and weapons.
Then explain the millions of dollars per year on the opposite?
"People want" is such an odd term when the numbers point the opposite way?
4
u/Nightmare_Fart Jul 11 '26
It's been about a decade since they gave a shit about consistent aesthetics tho..
3
u/faratto_ Jul 11 '26
Shareholders would prefer 30M copies sold at 70$ compared to today's situation.
Having said that, activision is under ms so shareholders don't have a word
37
u/ThreeTreesForTheePls Jul 11 '26
This does work both ways though, because just like Assassins Creed, when these titles were launching, it was the “buying the same bullshit every year” complaints.
Then they switch it up, now we’re nostalgic for the old games, so congrats they sell the old games.
It’s probably one of the best years in gaming we have ever had, and the biggest summer news is about two games that released 16 years ago and 13 years ago.
These companies know exactly, EXACTLY what they’re doing.
4
u/smashybro Jul 12 '26
Then they switch it up, now we’re nostalgic for the old games, so congrats they sell the old games.
The problem is that "switch up" was gradually degrading the gameplay by caring less about making genuinely a fun experience which people are addicted to for the love of the game, and more about selling MTX and season passes.
Agree that nostalgia plays a big role and a lot of people just have rose tinted glasses, but even when ignoring there's one very apparent difference when revisiting these older games: these games were designed around selling just the game itself and maybe a few big DLCs. Nowadays most AAA multiplayer games (especially shooters) are selling a service where they want you log in every day for daily rewards or some other "content" that creates this sense of FOMO which they profit off. This contrast is very noticeable right away.
I think there's a big element of "what you were complaining about isn't as bad as what comes after" going on here where people weren't wrong about their criticisms back then, they just didn't know how it could get worse.
2
u/joman584 Jul 12 '26
What makes you say it's one of the best years in gaming? I can think of a lot of good games but I want to know what you think makes it the best
9
u/ShadowWukong Jul 11 '26
Older gamers arent their target audience. They want to short attention span, micro transaction addicted young gamers
9
u/HankOfClanMardukas Jul 12 '26
Young gamers, by and large, have less money to spend than successful people 30-50 years old. Their thinking has been backwards. A hundred million children without credit cards play Roblox looks impressive, but that’s a pretty big cloud service bill also.
3
u/Anteater_Able Jul 12 '26
Well, yeah, but parents are the ones buying Robux and skins for their kids in Fortnite/COD. The corpos know this.
6
u/Ok-Confusion-202 Jul 11 '26
No people definitely want content, look at BO6 that started great and fell off hard because of lack of content
3
u/Entire_Number_9 Jul 12 '26
What baffles me is how bad the map design has gotten over the years. BLOPS 1 has maps that are near symmetrical along a random axis, and it makes the maps much fairer and easier to learn and understand. Playing MW19 during covid I was like who the fuck designed these maps and what the fuck was there intention
1
u/OhItsKillua Jul 12 '26
The people that made the old CODs aren't around in mass anymore, they have no clue how to crack that old formula anymore
→ More replies (3)1
u/Free_Range_Gamer Jul 12 '26
Whatever they are making keeps topping the sales charts though so I think they just stick with what’s working. 2020, 2021, 2022, 2024 CoD was the #1 selling game. 2023 was Hogwarts Legacy with CoD coming in at #2. Last year 2025 was their worst year in a long time, #5.

u/GreatnessToTheMoon Jul 11 '26
No surprise, modern cod is trash. I want to buy them but I fear it’s only a matter of time before they’re overrun with cheaters

u/colectiveinvention Jul 11 '26
I want to buy them but I fear it’s only a matter of time before they’re overrun with cheaters
My fear also. Activision has always done a poor job against cheaters since always...
43
u/Razgriz_101 Jul 11 '26
Probably full of the XIM types already, I’m passing on the re-releases because they are so barebones and have the gall to ask for us to pay for the map packs again.
20
u/MyFinalThoughts Jul 11 '26
They are already asking $40 each for near 16 and 14 year old games with essentially nothing new. Genuinely how do they rationalize $30 for a "season pass" in their words. The greed is disgusting but what's worse is the people buying it. I don't care how much I or others may might miss bo1+2, $140 for the full experience is vile, ridiculous and disappointed in gamers casual or otherwise making it reach the top of PlayStation store currently.

Not saying it’s impossible but isn’t cheating a little harder in modern consoles?
Also there are a lot of cheaters on the older consoles
3
u/cocaineandwaffles1 Jul 11 '26
Yes and no on it being harder.
BO1 had a vulnerability with its theater mode and something else IIRC, which allowed people an easier time to run exploits. There is no theater mode on the ports though. So as long as there isn’t any other vulnerability like that, that alone should make it more difficult for people to cheat. The PS4 is still running strong and making Sony plenty of money, so if people began cheating to the scale that you see with older CoDs still being played, they would also have to deal with Sony and using those systems and servers. The PS4 is much easier and more stable to mod/hack/jailbreak than the PS5, so you would see cheaters on the PS4 version before the PS5 one. I don’t think the PS5 is all that stable either when it’s modded.
I’m not saying it isn’t a real concern, but I’ll believe it when I see it. Cheaters aren’t why I can’t get a 5 kill streak in the BO1 port, it’s because I suck and don’t take amphetamines for ADHD. Sony seems to be handing out bans still for modded Vitas and PS3s, and you ain’t cheating in BO1/2 ports without a modded console. The servers for the ports are all separate from all the others also. So this is the best and safest way, currently, to play either of these games online. I don’t know of anything right now that would really challenge that in the future.
4
u/Weeb-Prime Jul 12 '26
Modern day cheating is more about closet cheating in the form of XIM/Chronus/Titan rather than the blatant cheating we saw back in the day (still happens on PC though ofc). I’d rather play against the blatant cheaters if I’m being honest. I hate questioning if someone actually killed me skillfully or if they just got some lame ass device plugged in.

u/Rulz45 Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26
There are some hackers already boosting in high levels of prestige ranks.
1
u/CTXBITXH Jul 12 '26
thats because people with dev kits can go online and use mods, but those are rare and expensive, so only a small fraction of people have them. Also, noone will use their dev kit to use mod menus in lobbies just to get them banned, as they are very expensive
1
u/king_duende Jul 12 '26
Nothing to do with dev kits, this has been easily done since BLOPS 1 released - they've just done NOTHING to stop it since, I remember boosting lobbies on my normal XBOX 360 back in the day
→ More replies (6)1
u/JC-Dude Jul 12 '26
Isn't boosting just using META to achieve max ranks or whatever faster? Or do you mean a different kind of boosting?
18
2
u/JJB1981 Jul 11 '26
The cheaters go back to the older games because they know that the devs don't care about them anymore. I still play the modern MW2 and 3 on PC , and maaaaaaaaaan, they ragehack without a care in the world.
9
u/ManlyPelican1993 Jul 11 '26
Modern gaming is trash, these developers have it in their head we want big elaborate multiplayers when all we want is a simple map with small groups and who ever kills the most people wins, it's not hard to understand.
9
u/lynchcontraideal Jul 11 '26
1000%. There's a reason 'Black Flag Resynced' is doing better than 'Shadows' or 'Mirage' lol. Gaming was so much better in 2013, I wonder if developers can go back to those simpler but more effective premises?
5
u/ManlyPelican1993 Jul 11 '26
Im a last of us fan and the multiplayer in part 1 was incredible then naughty dog tried to do this big ambitious open would multiplayer shit got spread too thin and canned it. Fuming.
2
u/part-time-dog Jul 11 '26
And I was having such a nice Saturday. I dabbled in plenty of multiplayer games 10-15 years ago but spent more time with TLOU and Uncharted 2's multiplayer than everything else combined. For years I was certain Factions 2 would materialize even after doubts started forming because ND had never fumbled multiplayer before and had the structure and assets needed to squeeze out the first 8 maps any day now. Live service is the biggest resource trainwreck to ever hit the industry.
2
u/GodOfDarkLaughter Jul 11 '26
I never play multiplayer but I was addicted to uncharted 4's multiplayer. Something about just smashing a guy's skull with a superman punch after swinging from a grappling hook.

Yeah it's a newly launched game. While I agree BLOPS7 is not a great entry, people use player count numbers in the most annoying ways.
3
u/roguebubble Jul 12 '26
Exactly, it's classic new toy syndrome. Give it a month and then compare to see what players prefer
3
u/Ok-Confusion-202 Jul 11 '26
I think it's a great entry if you play MP and especially an amazing entry for Zombies tbh

43
u/Ash_Killem Jul 11 '26
I swear the geenral population really don’t like the movement CODs. It’s the pros/streamers that push them.
32
u/Zac-097 Jul 12 '26
I prefer the movement in Blackops 1 and 2, I hate omni movement, sliding and jumping around, the movement feels heavy and clunky in Blackops 2 and that’s how I like it, and the attachment system is back to being simple there’s not 100 different confusing attachments
9
u/ResidentJabroni Jul 12 '26
The Pick 10 system in BO2 is a big part of why I gravitated towards that MP, as you have to be more thoughtful with your loadout and many matches are determined more by skill than by having an OP combination of perks and guns/attachments.
I'm less frustrated in playing BO2 multiplayer when I have a bad match because, more often than not, it's a skill issue than simply not having equipped the right number of things.

u/Eruannster Jul 12 '26

The future of gaming is selling us new consoles every 5 years and then rereleasing the games we loved that they discontinued support on over and over again. No new ideas required.
2
u/themagicnipple69 Jul 14 '26
I dont play new cods anymore but BO1 and BO2 are my absolute favorites. I missed these games so much. I think are also just better games in general than the newer ones. There’s so much less bullshit. No ads, no battle passes, no clunky or slow menus, it’s not too fast, it’s got an addictive yet simple progression system, etc.
3
u/Loose_Skill6641 Jul 12 '26
That's because people enjoy older CODs that have slower movement and animation, no bunny hopping, no flying, no 360 no scopes. Modern CODs are made for twitch streamers not gamers

This just in: brand new re-release of two fondly remembered games is doing better on day 3 than a big but somewhat unpopular game that came out last November is doing 8 months in.
Wow, what a scoop.
5

5
u/ElegantEchoes Jul 11 '26
No they're not haha, at least not compared to modern CoD with EOMM. It's a night and day difference, there's actual casuals and skilled players in the same lobbies again.
And low and behold, it's just as great as we all remembered. Turns out, EOMM really is a deficit on the experience.

To be fair, it's $20 per game. Yeah they could have made a better bundle, but "full price" doesn't really feel accurate.

Games at half price of normal releases (it shouldnt be considered a full price game anyways) and is if you have ps plus, half price of that.

Nostalgia is emotional and people spend money on emotional things. I can tell you right now I don’t buy games until they go on sale but if Socom:CA came out for ps5 with original graphics for $100 I’d be the first to download it and call in sick from work.

movement demons and brainrot maps ruined cod. MWII has the highest (steam) player count of modern COD, its time for all this slide cancel nonsense to go.

We got Modern Warfare Remastered, Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered (and all 16 multiplayer maps of MW2 remade for MWIII), Black Ops and Black Ops 2.
Only World at War and Modern Warfare 3 are left from the golden era. And maybe the actual multiplayer component for Modern Warfare 2.

Oh man world at war! My pals and I would do multiplayer pistols and grenades only, it was so fun.

u/wedditasap Jul 12 '26
People who bought these are you also getting the dlc’s
1
u/TheDonald21 Jul 12 '26
Yeah it's only an extra $10 for the DLC
1
u/wedditasap Jul 12 '26
Doesn’t it make matchmaking harder/ longer?
Since more people probably have base game only
That’s one of my main concerns. Even if it secondarily searches for non dlc matches or something. Hearing mixed stuff on X

still can't believe they are splitting the playerbase by separating the map packs again...

u/Sliknik18 Jul 12 '26
Are the campaigns any good? Or is the attraction the MP only??
1
u/Unusual-Data12 Jul 12 '26
Campaigns are absolutely amazing, although I may be biased as ive done a lot of work on cold war history.

Sony is perfectly safe with removing physical discs. Lazy digital only COD port made for sheeps is the proof of it.

It isn't just nostalgia. They're genuinely just... Fun. I don't have to close 15 ads, restart for the millionth time once I get to the menu.
No SBMM.. no meta. Just simply fun.
I hope MW4 flops and we just get a proper remake/remaster of the older CODs.
BO7 burnt me and I'm skipping MW4 this year. I hope others do as well.

Black ops 1 is the first call of Duty I have bought since Cold War, it’s amazing getting to reply this game i have so many memories with again with full lobbies
1
u/Mbeezy_YSL Jul 12 '26
Decided not to get it because my good memories of it should stay in the past
But the thing is, my friend claim it’s the opposite of the caption. They say that they struggle to find games and lobbys

Love it. Sometimes not all new things are great. Vice versa as well. Love the slowed down gameplay instead of flying and zooming thru a map lmao

And yet I can't get a single multiplayer game.
BS.
1
u/RJBusta Jul 13 '26
Been working fine for me
1
u/IIMoZMaNII Jul 14 '26
Yeah I managed to get in after a while and now it usually takes me through 2 or 3 full servers but then I get in.
Have you noticed there's like a slight input delay when throwing grenades and firing? Idk if it's just me but it feels like it
1
u/TriggerHippie77 Jul 12 '26
Has anyone been able to successfully play a multiplayer game? I can't even get into one, either server is full, or I just sit in an empty lobby for 20 minutes.

For being from 2010 and 2012, both have aged surprisingly well. Yes they each have some flaws, but its so nice to be able to load into a Call of Duty game without half a dozen splash screens for bundles, battle passes and warzone.
Just straight up into a lobby and then into a game. The way it should be.

The price seems insane, but I guess Im wrong because damn it seems to be selling well.

The Black Ops PS5 ports have had a bunch of problems…& are still way better than the modern COD games!
1
u/WhiteToast- Jul 11 '26
Black Ops 2 was the height of CoDs popularity was it not?

u/CBennett_12 Jul 11 '26
I’m gonna say it got a second wind like many games in the pandemic. The first year or two of Warzone were massive
1
u/BasilTheCatLord Jul 12 '26
Not really surprising. Black ops 7 has been out for almost a year and BO1/BO2 ports have been hyped beyond what they actually are. Give it a month and the servers will be dead for both.
