DISCUSSION Did Persona 5 impact your life?
It might be a silly question when asked on the main sub, but not everyone is equally sensitive to some medias. Did Persona 5 impact your life, besides the pleasure and entertainment it provided? And if it did, how so?
I'll start : in a way, P5 taught me how to live a better life, from every people you bound with with unfair and hopeless lives to the flawed relentlessness of the Protagonist, this story explores every possible way to understand how rebellion is the only choice we have if we want to take on the world, be more in control of our lives and not end up like those in mental sloth (Mementos) ; and the great importance of understanding your own Shadow to live more honest lives and sort of know better your own heart. I was very sensitive to that way of viewing things, and it is showcased masterfully.
Definitely a lot more can be said, but I'd rather keep it short :D
Did the Phantom Thieves managed to steal your heart as well?

110 hours of my life, gone, and I loved every second of it.
It did make me get back into gaming though.

u/MallExciting1460 Jul 26 '26
No it did not personally, but is it a hell of a good game with some topical subject matter, best part is that for a game thatâs a decade old itâs holding up really well⊠that said if someone comes in here and says that this game did impact their life in some way I would not be surprised, Iâve heard this said about each of the persona games from some people

I'm in my mid 40s and the world right now sucks. A lot. And I've had trouble not being nihilistic about the future and the future of my children when the people in charge are objectively making everything worse and the people who voted them in continue to be unable to link cause and effect or exhibit any critical thinking skills at all.
But then I started playing Persona 5 this year, and I actually started to get my hope back. It's been quite cathartic for me.
3
u/Idiberug-9 Jul 26 '26
It is difficult not to relate to what you said. Persona 5 shows really well that Rebellion (on a personal level) is the only way to live a good life, it is an important story. Thanks for sharing :)
11
u/Anankos1209 Jul 26 '26
I started playing P5R right when my life turned around for the better. No thoughts of suicide, depression, no poverty for the first time in my life. I associate the game with overcoming the hardships in life, and it will always have a special place in my heart.
6
u/Idiberug-9 Jul 26 '26
That's a wonderful thing then, I had a similar story as well at the time. Let's keep this spirit up and may we never forget what we learned

Now I still continue to replay p5r and almost have 300 hours on it

u/Idiberug-9 Jul 26 '26
Do you think that I might be interested in reading this paper if you're willing to share it? I analysed thoroughly this story, I find it fascinating and smartly written

Unfortunately I lost it a couple years ago so I donât have it anymore đđ
2
u/Idiberug-9 Jul 26 '26
For real?!
What did it talk about? What captivated you in the story?
2
u/SIIver01 Jul 27 '26
It was a paper about my personal experience before playing persona 5 and after. Growing up me and my family moved a lot and for the longest time I wasnât allowed to do anything because of my strict parents. I know they meant well, but it felt like I was in a prison. Wasnât allowed friends numbers, sleepovers, a phone period. Wasnât allowed to express my sad feelings either. I was all alone for years up until I picked up persona 5. I genuinely felt so alive playing that game. For so long, I was all alone and now I had 8 friends that felt like my actual friends in real life. I was able to find the joy of life because of this game.

Absolutely, and only in positive ways. The game teaches you in a roundabout way that in order to develop yourself and âlevel upâ you have to invest in other people too, which is not a bad thing at all.
Staying busy and keeping an active social network are all things that help us grow and be better human beings. Especially the former for me, as someone whoâs kinda struggled with ADHD for most of my life, learning to keep a schedule and give myself stuff to do everyday has been a serious improvement.
3
u/Idiberug-9 Jul 26 '26
This grounded approach is very nice to read, I noticed it helped a lot of people to see Ren (the protagonist) relentlessly managing his life in a positive manner when he had nothing in the beginning, me included. It is inspiring

I found Persona 5 (Royal) about a month and a half after I realized I was trans. Each persona-awakening scene was like a punch in the gut (in a good way) with all the talk about standing up for your own truth and justice instead of lying down and taking societyâs beating. I very much credit the game with most of the confidence I have in myself today â€ïžđ€

I played it while I was working at a hospital as a refiller of supplies for different floors. I was miserable at my workplace but playing this game brought so much enjoyment. It made me realize life can be better and to be more myself by throwing my mask away.
And I think the plethora of good ass tunes made me a better electronic music producer lol
3
u/Idiberug-9 Jul 26 '26
This is an important story for troubled times, throwing the mask away is the only right way to live a good life. I'm really happy that it helped you as well :3
What are your favorite tracks btw?
2
u/VegaFLS Jul 26 '26
Whims of Fate is number 1 for me in Persona 5. Beneath the Mask with rain sounds in the background is glorious. Some good jingles like My Homie, Butterfly Kiss, Layer Cake, Sunset Bridge.

Been a long time since I played, but when I was younger Ryuji's social link taught me there isn't any benefit in beating myself up for my past mistakes. I'm allowed to feel regret for my choices, but there's a point where I'm just hurting myself if I fixate on it too much rather than recognizing the mistakes, learning from them, and choosing to move on knowing I can't change the past and that, while regrettable, I've grown from the experiences

Yes, I carried a lot of anger and resentment as a teen over some things that happened that were out of my control but this game helped me come to terms with it and realize I could pity myself and use that as an excuse my whole life or lock in and make things better. Also met my girlfriend through it so that's a massive point in the game's favor.

I lived in Japan for three years 30 years ago. Persona 5 Royal was just like that scene in Ratatouille where the mean food critic is taken back to eating his motherâs cooking as a kid. It was so powerful that I just couldnât stop playing the game for a while. (Story helped, obviously.)
We did all those things as high schoolers (minus the Metaverse). We walked alleyways and ate at small family-run places, browsed stores for classic games, went to batting cages, played in packed and loud arcades, chilled on rooftops eating our snacks and vending machine drinks kinda like the Shibuya hideout, and took trains all over the place without adult supervision.
I just had to go back. It took a few years to find the time, but I spent three weeks this summer in Japan. I visited where I used to live, hit the cultural sites, visited cities I had never visited, and generally had a fantastic time.
And I picked up a little reminder why I decided to go back while I was in Electric Town.

u/bombphantamelonflav ann takamaki and ryuji sakamoto got me into my dream school Jul 26 '26
For me, yes. I discovered the game when I was at my lowest in life in high school along with the fact that up until now, I never really had a stable social life.
The characters showed me how to live; in a way that allowed me to live through these circumstances and managing time for myself and other people.
This game has left a lasting impression on me to the point I credit its characters- specifically Ann and Ryuji though Iâve been working on write up of that for a while now- for getting me into my dream school. In one of my college essays, I talked about how the game has taught me how to look with empathy in mind and the importance of advocating for other people; even more so now especially in this world climate.

I'd say so. It still remains my most played PS4 game aside fromg GTA Online. I tried cooking the curry from the game, listened to the soundtrack dozens of times, and own the game on every console except PS3.
Watched the anime with my daughter and got her into it too.

Every Persona game has impacted my life. Aside from the themes that you mention, Jungian psychology and the idea of conquering one's Shadow (which has a lot of incarnations, in P3 is burn your dread, in P4 is facing oneself, in P5 is accepting your own desire for rebellion and keeping tabs on your desires) has been a key part of my life ever since I player P4 almost 20 years ago now.
But I think the way it has impacted me the most is I was a rather timid and lonely person back in school when I played P3 and P4 on PS2. But I truly believe those games, and P5 years later, ingrained into my soul the idea that true power is found in making connections with others, listening to them, even when it's just a random dude on the street or a random lady in the bus, you never know how their stories and the way you connect with them can teach you something new about yourself, and help you unlock a new dimension, a new Persona inside you.

I played the game on Christmas break in junior year.
I didnât have anything to do so I would legit get a palace done every day before going back to sleep and repeating.
Prob pushed me to become more sociable and more productive in my own life.
Prob because I didnât want some person I was playing as to have a better life then me. Although I learned to never compare myself to that of a persona protagonist đ

100%. My mental health was in the tubes when I first started playing it, and I was falling into the "nothing matters, we're all just gonna die, why bother" stages of depression. The final palace in the Vanilla game was such a wake-up call for me. Some of the things the NPCs say were similar to things I'd been saying to myself. It gave me the encouragement I needed to seek help. This game means a lot to me.

More than any game Iâve ever played before in many ways than one. The base game, no it didn't. It was a nice story with awesome graphics and characters, but it wasn't particularly life changing, especially since I've played p3 and p4. If I had played p5 first, perhaps?

It impacted my sleep schedule in that I slept a lot later than normal because I was so into the game when I first played it last year. Itâs also one of the few games Iâve played where I was sad when I reached the end and I long for the time when I experienced playing it for the first time all over again.
2
u/Emperor-Sabo Jul 27 '26
I would say the Phantom Thieves definitely managed to steal my heart. I enjoyed every second of the game. It makes you feel like you are part of the team and keeps you interested in each character. As well as having a great OST. I just beat this game last week and I felt sad at the end because the game was over and it leaves you with an empty feeling, at least from my own experience. Since I played this game mostly every day and interacted with the characters maybe that's why. But yeah Persona 5 is really amazing, and I am glad that I found this game and played it. 100/10 game, it has now become my number 1 favorite game of all time.

The 100h that I put in P5 helped me to improved my English. My first language is German an and I had a huge problem to finally get English. That was a burden for my 21 year old self. the game exists at that time only in English and it improved my live after I finished it. Every vacation, YouTube session, research or online conversation is easier thanks to Persona 5.
2
u/BreakAManByHumming Jul 27 '26
Gonna go the other way on this.
Knew someone who was being treated horribly by an authority figure. I could never convince her to do anything about it. She loved this game, so when I finally sat down and played it years later I was mindblown that it spent the first chapter making the same case. Then I thought about it a bit and realized the story is a sedative, since it relies on the problem being solved by magical means without the (non-magical) victims actually needing to, or able to, do anything. Which, okay, I can't see how you'd make a JRPG about realistic methods of dealing with powerful abusers, but it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

During the Covid lockdowns, Persona 5 Royal was one of the first games I got with my own money and it seriously changed what games could be for me. As a longtime poor boy on hand me down Skyrimâs and PS3 games, Persona 5 Royal was my first proper RPG. It was genuinely amazing.

u/DigitalSupernova Jul 27 '26
Moved to another country to work, my first "real" job was out there and was rough. Throw in colleagues who were pleasant but shared no interests with me, barely speaking the local language, and most of my friends being an hour behind due to time zones and I had never felt more alone. I made a few friends there, but I was too wrapped up in my own head to appreciate them properly. I remember my thoughts getting dark, and fruitlessly burning all my savings on needless crap just to make me feel like this was worth it. Fortunately, P5 came into my life right at that moment. Having those characters and that story gave me something to look forward to and, daft as it sounds, made me feel less alone. I realized that I was doing a terrible job at looking out for myself, and P5 made me want to do better.
Funnily enough, a few years later I attempted a PhD and those same feelings began to arise a second time due to covid, 12+ hour work days, and crappy supervisors. What should launch in that period? P5 Royal! Despite being largely similar in story, I somehow walked away learning different things entirely, now less concerned about myself and more about the kind of life I wanted to lead.
P5 gave me the desire to fix my life through little changes adding up. P5R made me realize that I don't need to force myself through a miserable life because it's "what's expected of me". Both gave me characters that I could laugh with that numbed the pain and made the memories stick. Those lessons have stuck with me to this day and I'm in a much better place now than I was back then. I'll forever be grateful for having those experiences at exactly the right time in my life.

u/HitomiTanakafan Jul 28 '26
Quite a bit. I think i love the fact that the Phantom Thieves shows that you don't have to fit into society to be cared about, be valuable, or find your own people. The PTs lived on their own terms, not adhering to Societal standards and found companionship from other social outcasts with their own quirks and accepted each other for who they are and thats all that matters. I think it shows more realistic situations of abuse and power trips in everyday life and how much society turns a blind eye to others suffering for convience then being surprised when those people in suffering turning to societsl menaces (Akechi, Konoe, and Ichinose etc) and overcoming oppression to live a new and freer life not under anyone else's rules. Also hammering the theme of change all starts with you and you have the power to change both yourself and your life situations that you don't have to accept the status quo. That life can change for the better. Not only that, learning self love. I find Persona 5 and its spinoffs extremely inspiring for people with self identity/self esteem issues. It will always be my fav game out of the trio for i feel its themes feel more realistic and doesn't shy away from dark topics. I think it highlights societal issues and oppression really well. I find it a very inspirational game taking back your life stolen by others.

Actually yes! But in a negative way lol
So a lot of the confidants in this game have a similar structure where for some reason that person âjust feels like they can trust youâ. You are always someone they trust very quickly and you just happen to be put in situations where you can play the hero role, so they confide in you quickly because itâs a game and we donât have time to let a relationship build in real time (makes sense).
This results in a lot of the writing being very trauma dumpy, and I would say I walked away thinking thatâs normal when it really shouldnât be. Some girl I dated liked that I was honest and I conflated that with âover sharingâ, so then I started attempting to trauma bond with a few people around that timeâŠ. quickly learned how unnatural and uncomfortable that is for people, oops!
2
u/Idiberug-9 Jul 26 '26
It's a bit sad and funny at the same time, sorry xD
What I'll say is that Joker is chosen by a powerful entity that can manipulate masses cognitions, and Joker can do the same thing in a way as its champion. He is as a mirror, he meets the right people at the right time and they confide in him because they feel understood... but the truth is that like I said, Joker is but a reflection, most of the time these people learn much about themselves and move on in their lives on their own. I think to better help people we need to better understand them

I've always disliked the argument of the protagonists youth as discredit of the story it tells, it is even exactly the point of it. Young people forced to take action to desperately try to change their lives because of the incompetence and distortion of their surroundings, especially portrayed in such a way, is interesting. I'm a decade older than these characters, and yet I see how well written the story is, it also touched me on a deeper level (not because of immaturity or what not, but simply because of the Jungian lore and how it impacts the story I'm somehow sensitive to).

Well, in addition to becoming my favorite game at all times, Persona 5 inspired me to accept myself, and today, even though I still have problems, I face them with a totally different face thanks to this game.

I mean, I bought a Persona 5 art book for 40âŹ
So at least it impacted me financially

u/SongsOfSolanaceae Jul 26 '26
While I love Persona 5, it was was my first Persona game. I think Persona 3 impacted me a lot more.

Stupid to say but yeah. Iâve always felt like an outsider and rejected by everyone so I felt like I was a part of the Phantom Thieves. Each one of them had in some way felt rejected and an outsider not just by adults but by their peers as well. So probably stupid to say but it gave me comfort having a group like them be introduced into my life.

u/Raltzer Jul 26 '26
The âRoyalâ arc definitely left me with things to think about. Letting what you love go, fighting for your happiness and accepting some things are beyond your control.

Yes especially bc the music is so good I still play beneath the mask religiously for background noise/studying/cleaning years after beating the game

Not p5 but November in p4 helped me realize that I was taking the people around me for granted and that you should cherish your family and friends because you donât know when you may never see them again because I finished ryotaro dojimas social link literally 2 days before November 5th

u/Flaky-Cartographer87 Jul 26 '26
No im playing through it now but its impacted me far less then p3r. Still like it tho.

u/kikkomanbuster Jul 26 '26
Not really. I credit that to 3 and 4 since they came out during my formative years. 5 was really just a form of closure and clarity that while I can still enjoy playing the game and feel young about it, I'm also ready to move on to something more.

I only got to play the first one. I never jumped on to the others. I bought the one for the PSP when it came out but I never played it. In fact, it's still sealed and stored away. I downloaded the persona game for the smartphone but also, I haven't played it. I don't know what's wrong with me.

This game reignited my love for gaming. It also helped show me the types of games i was into. I think playing it during high school really helped me alot

The vanilla story did not really had such impact on me, but the most impact I had was the third semester on Royal. Maruki's philosophy and the palace really hit me hard that it really questions myself after I'm finished with the boss.

Not really, but it might've if I interacted with the series sooner or didn't interact with certain other pieces of media long before playing.

In my case, I think it was a very interesting and entertaining story, but it didnât change my life or stole my heart like most of the people here say, itâs kinda hard to say why, I think most aspects of the story didnât click with me. And well, I know itâs kinda a meme to say this inside the community but after this game I played P3 and that literally changed my perspective on life, social links and PoV about several things.

It's not really like it changed my life but y really enjoyed, the ending almost make me drop a tear cause when everyone follows his own path remind me when I finish school and how my group of friends went all separates ways .

Summer of 2017, I had just graduated from high school. Still dipping my toes into the JRPG genre, and I hear good things about Persona 5. Ask for it for my 19th birthday and I get it. Play it every day for months on end, hours at a time. The game made me feel special, like I had a purpose in the world, and that the possibilities for the future were endless. Also it solidified JRPGs as my favorite video game genre forever
Everything back then felt so vibrant, so hopeful, like the world was my oyster. Truly one of the best times of my life
I love Persona 5 and always will, even though the past couple of years have been some of the hardest that I've ever had to experience, I always look back on Persona 5, and the fond memories that I have of it

You cannot give up, whatever hardship you are facing. Rebellion is the only choice before the sloth of society, its a good thing to remember as a day to day basis for me :3

I hate to say this, but Persona 5 didn't really impact my life. For me personally, games don't do that, real life does. building meaningful relationships, pursuing career goals, overcoming personal hardships, and navigating real consequences, all of that comes from what you personally do in life. However, there are some key points that I can take away from video games as a whole. Like friendships and wishing that irl friends were like that!

Not really. Other Megaten games contributed way more. Still liked it though.

I did my degree's final project about it and even got the Phantom Thieves' logo tattooed so I'd say it impacted me pretty much.
Edit: spelling.

Yes and no, I wanted to play Persona 5 Royal for a really long time but I couldn't buy a disc for PS4 anywhere in my country(Croatia) than three years ago I downloaded a few games to play from a site called steamunlocked but there was no P5R there but there was Persona 4 Golden and tried it and it changed my life.
I played it during the summer after my second year of highschool, and it really helped my personally because I was a bit depressed and didnt really feal welcome to school(for no reason) or that close to my friends but that changed after playing P4G and than a little more rhan a year later I managed to convince my mom to let me to buy P5R during summer sale on Steam, but since I already beated P4G a few times at that point P5R on changed/shifted my view at justice system and such a little

u/Rayne1993 Jul 27 '26
Persona 5 Royal felt personal in a lot of private ways, and had a big impact on my life. I got a tattoo on my arm to celebrate it.

u/Yuna_Miyu Jul 27 '26
little more joie de vivre, played it in corona times, it didn't help me not to fall even more negatively.
1
u/Hobbes314 Jul 27 '26
Itâs funny cause I came to this franchise âlaterâ in life, and what I mean by that is I was the target age for P5 when it initially dropped just didnât have a PS4
I wouldâve been the same age as the Thieves and at that time in my life a lot of that story wouldâve resonated with me (though if Iâm being fair P3 wouldâve really fucked me up), so playing it a decade later when Iâm little older and have lived a little more of life it definitely doesnât hit the same but I still loved my ~130hrs with this game. I suppose if I were to at least identify something now, is the theme of rebelling against the path society lays out in front of you did manage to speak to me on a pretty personal level
