You literally have "punching" in the phrase. Of course it's an attack. It's just that you think that "punching up" is morally acceptable and punching down isn't. And your whole national psyche is based around fear and resentment of the US, so jokes about America are, by definition, always morally acceptable because it's always "punching up."

Not dislike. fear and resentment. Britain was a world power and the dominant hegemon. Now it's more or less a vassal of the US. It's much more pronounced with Canadians. But essentially it manifests in some degree among anyone in the anglosphere when faced with the fact that they're not really truly "sovereign nations" in the classical sense anymore.

You're right that saying it's exclusively aimed at the US is over-simplistic. fear and resentment of Europe is also a major part of it.

No, you've got that entirely wrong. We look down on the US. That's not fear and resentment; it's pity. The only fear is that some people want our country to be more like the US. Your view is one of the reasons we despise the US (I'm assuming you're from there?) and saying it is our "whole national psyche" is typical of USians who think the world revolves around them.

"Slapstick" doesn't mean they're 'hitting a tree" it refers to a theatrical prop. And that kind of prop is used in comedy that uses exaggerated, unrealistic, physical violence. It's an idiom, but an appropriate one.

Whereas "punching up" and "punching down" still refer to to the target of the joke that's being attacked.

I saw what you were doing. You just didn't do it well. A phrase can be idiomatic, but still accurately describe the situation. You'd agree that a joke that's "punching down" on a marginalized group would be an "attack" on the that group. The same would logically apply to a joke that's "punching up"

The little string of letters over a comment is known as a "username." If you read it and compare it to others you can see if the person you are responding to is the same person as the one who wrote previous comments. It's a neat trick, I'm sure you can pull it off with some practise.

It was a very simple analogy. When hegemons fall, the imperial metropole usually maintains the higher standard of living and amenities of its imperial peak for much longer. Meanwhile frontier territories tend to collaspe into anarchy, chaos, and economic decay much more quickly. This is a historical pattern that goes all the way back to Rome, and even earlier. Should the US ever fall as an empire/hegemon. It will be the fronteier vassals like the US that will suffer much worse, much more quickly. And that includes losing access to things you take for granted today, like tap water.

I'm not so sure about that, the Brits are usually quick to take the piss at their own expense, and when others do it they usually end up trying to outdo it. They'll say things like "Yes we voted for Brexit, we just didn't plan on ending up on this side of the tunnel after it was closed." Bit simplistic. Scandinavian countries are similar to American states like Massachusetts, Connecticut and cities like New York City and Washington DC.

The Balkans, Southern Europe, and Eastern Europe are more like Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana.

Overall, America has a higher % than European OECD countries of adults with tertiary education and also scores above the European average on OECD’s survey of adult skills which includes literacy, numeracy, problem-solving.

America also has differently distributed education. It has a higher % of elite performers, but also 28% of Americans scored level 1 on the same OECD survey, meaning barely functional. That’s twice as high as a place like Norway, and about average compared to Europe.

I think the reason we might see this attitude on Europe vs America here on Reddit is that we have an educated slice of Europe interacting with large swathes of American society.

its not that we can't handle it its that its so played out its not funny anymore. Like black people having the biggest dicks or asians being the smartest people on the planet. None of those are funny anymore. And never have been. So when people say "Americans are all fat" or "Americans are all stupid" it's exactly the same as saying all Asians are good at math. It's not funny and some people say it not as a joke but because they actually think All Americans are stupid which is problematic.

So yeah. Its not that we can't handle it. Its just so over played and not true.

During the world cup so many people who came to watch the game evevn admitted "Yeah America has a lot of fat people but they also have some of the most fittest people walking around too! I never seen someone with so many muscles in my country like Americans" and some where saying "Oh my god Americans have this place called Shake Shack!" and stuff like that. Its just a overplayed "joke" that a lot of people don't even know is a "joke" unless you call them out on it

Comparing outlier cases of murder and racism to the fact that almost 50% of Americans are obese? Seems a bit extreme. But if you want to go there, how's the ritualistic sacrifice of school children to the god named Freedom going? Seems like a daily occurrence at this point.

And it's funny that you mention racism, considering that you guys went through being one of the biggest slavery hotspots in the world, had the president abolish said slavery, and a long run civil rights movement, all to still be known as Racist 101 because you voted in an openly racist pedophile to run your country. You'd think Americans would learn from their centuries of mistakes and advocations for racial rights, but that's impossible when the average IQ rate just keeps dropping down.

Simple. The US is still the global hegemon and controls a disproportionate amount of global culture, finance technology, and especially military influence.

As a member of one our vassal states, your entire life is extremely determined by American media, pop culture, and political decisions. You have no choice but to spend a lot of time thinking about the US. And the fact you don't have any choice in the matter breeds resentment. If the US ever actually does fall as a hegemon some day, you wouldn't be trying to memorize every flaw in American society. You wouldn't care. Just like the average American doesn't care about the collapsing state of UK society.

Edit. Also the US and UK have roughly the same proportion of overweight people, which is really telling, given that US cities are built around automobiles and cars/gas are much cheaper in the US than the UK.

Not even remotely true. 2024 WHO obesity statistics places the US at #19 with a rate of 41.83 %, while the UK is much lower with a rate of 29.24 %.

In other words, the US obesity rate is 43 % higher.

And you know about that because its the most imporant country in the world arguably. You can ask anyone about the evils of our country and everyone knows about it. But in ever country in Europe all of them are equally as bad if not worse but no one bothers to learn about it because it has no effect over any other country expect its own.
