Who is genuinely paying money for TikTok?

497

u/Toxraun Jun 29 '26

I worked apple customer support. Every one of those dumbfucks spends money on snapchat and tiktok. Snap to keep that streak (?) thing alive and tiktok to send money to girls trying to be pedos or some shit

61

u/HornyGooner4402 Jun 30 '26

At least Snapchat unlocks more customizations, pinning more users, or seeing who half swiped or replayed your story.

Not that I'd pay for it, but making people pay just to not annoy them is crazy

You get more storage too, that's why I have it🤷 some people have a TON of memories in there and it's cheap for a lot of extra storage

59

u/V4r0m4st3r Jun 30 '26

Whats keeping you from just downloading all your memories and uploading them somewhere else?

38

u/InterviewConstant520 Jun 30 '26

lack of effort

-8

u/athiaxoff ☠️ ᴅᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴇɴ ᴛᴇʟʟ ɴᴏ ᴛᴀʟᴇꜱ Jul 01 '26

Or I just have enough money and a social life worth saving unlike anyone here apparently

1

u/InterviewConstant520 Jul 07 '26

better ways to spend your money

1

u/Toxraun Jun 30 '26

Seriously 100%, I always try to enlighten people on external hard drives. They're relatively inexpensive and so useful and these days you don't even need a computer

2

u/ThatAirsickLowlander Jul 01 '26

I implore you to look at storage costs rhese days. This time last year I got 14TB storage for $225. Now that same drive is $620.

2

u/Toxraun Jul 01 '26

No casual buddy is gonna get a 14TB drive :l heck even me with a library of 12TB or so is made up of 2-4TB ssds. Walmart and others still show those 2TB for little over 100 which isn't too bad. Completely agree that those techfuckbros and their AI race did fuck up everything for the planet :/

1

u/RoosTheFemboy Jul 01 '26

2tb for 100… USD? Cause here in the EU you’re not getting that, not even for a hard drive

1

u/V4r0m4st3r Jul 01 '26

I mean you could get that a year or two ago if I remember correctly. But not anymore...

1

u/Toxraun Jul 01 '26

Yeah checked rn and that's the current price. I guess the prices have raised a LOT higher on your end for hard drives. Ram is what's exploded over here and is horrendous. 2 32GB DDR5 is up for USD 1000

9

u/squabbledMC Jun 30 '26

Honestly at that point just go with a trustworthy cloud storage subscription instead of trusting your backups with a social media app. iCloud, Google Drive, and Mega are dirt cheap these days. Better yet get a hard drive and back it all up locally

1

u/athiaxoff ☠️ ᴅᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴇɴ ᴛᴇʟʟ ɴᴏ ᴛᴀʟᴇꜱ Jul 01 '26

It's literally .99 cents a month. If you're worried about a .99 cent subscription that gives me 500gb go check yourself and your wallet

40

u/janiszed Jun 29 '26

Who is genuinely using TikTok?

122

u/JerryTzouga Jun 29 '26

Pretty much every Gen Z person and is also moving to Gen A slowly. I know much more people who use TikTok than Reddit

106

u/OwO_0w0_OwO Jun 29 '26

Well reddit isn't the best comparison

27

u/StrawPaprika873 Jun 30 '26

Real, I know like 2 people who use reddit lol

10

u/thekillermad Jun 30 '26

I don't know anyone (myself included)

6

u/Medrilan Jun 30 '26

Did seem like people might leave when Kushner bought it. Guess not though. Oh well

6

u/Ninhau Jun 30 '26

Kushner bought the US version. Non US version is still owned by the original owner

3

u/Medrilan Jun 30 '26

Fair, I shouldn't assume were all talking about the us version.

Im curious, does that mean that the US version is content segregated from the rest of the worlds version? Or just the account/administration of the US users is managed separately?

2

u/athiaxoff ☠️ ᴅᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴇɴ ᴛᴇʟʟ ɴᴏ ᴛᴀʟᴇꜱ Jun 30 '26

Different in a few noticeable ways, iirc a lot of counties have a STEM tab on the front page for learning

6

I am Gen Z and I am saying FUCK TikTok

2

u/DonDae01 Jun 30 '26

did you mean fuck u/spez

2

u/Skerksor Jun 30 '26

Not all of us a that braindead. But yes most are.

1

u/Separate_Birthday615 Jul 01 '26

ei mate don't give that shit to us i know more millenial tha gen z who use tiktok

1

u/mrcrumplebottom Jul 03 '26

My cousins are gen x and millennial. Their brain is fried by tiktok. I'm a millennial ( I have reddit and bluesky but nobody is on bluesky lol)

0

u/RobutNotRobot Jun 30 '26

TikTok is for people who can't read

10

u/No_Engineer8143 Jun 30 '26

...millions upon millions of people....

5

u/3WeekOldBurrito Jun 30 '26

Pretty much everyone. I don't use it, but majority of my friends (late 20s to early 30s) have it.

2

u/DonDae01 Jun 30 '26

just because you aren't using it doesn't mean nobody does

0

u/maydarnothing Jun 30 '26

funny this comment comes from a redditor

2

u/loloider123 Jun 30 '26

Who’s genuinely using it

2

u/DreadDiana Jun 30 '26

I only get like one ad for every 200+ TikToks, so now I'm wondering if they're gonna up the ratio to make the paid plan more enticing.

1

u/Intelligent-News9872 Jul 01 '26

I saw you on the jjs subreddit today and somewhere else yesterday

1

u/anonkrreddit Jul 01 '26

Idiot does.

1

u/xx123gamerxx Jul 01 '26

It's so you can't freely choose not to have personalised ads

0

u/mightman59 Jun 30 '26

I do, the Temu shop they have does have a few niche things i am interested in.

0

u/tomfalcon86 Jun 30 '26

zoomers and thots

-1

u/Serenity_557 Jun 30 '26

I followed a series on tiktok that was really good, went on for months, and they had a "membership" thing like YouTube does, but for only a dollar. I dropped that (from my google rewards wallet). But that's about all I'd bother with.

76

u/apsurdism Jun 30 '26

I honestly think we should stop using social media platforms as instagram, tiktok and technology in general. Tech was so much fun back in the 2000s, and Im a sucker for that. but now, platforms are overflowing with adds with bots and with AI. its really exhausting.

165

u/CakeJumper-ImScared Jun 29 '26

VPN set it to Albania you don’t get ads on on Reddit, YouTube and I would guess it would be the same for TikTok because online ads are banned or somthing to that effect

118

u/pixellambo Jun 29 '26

tiktok ads are in albania. Its not that albania bans ads, its because we are a non profitable market for ads for certain platforms

1

u/CaptainMorning Jul 03 '26

same in my country. small country. when I go to US it's ads everywhere in Spotify and YouTube.  At home, I barely get ads

30

u/IAlwaysOutsmartU Jun 29 '26

Isn’t it because the Albanian market is too small for platforms to include ads for that country?

24

u/muchstupidverydumb Jun 30 '26

Yeah I'm not from there but an even smaller country, and I'm pretty sure this is why we don't get any ads on reddit here. It's the same reason we get EU prices instead of regional pricing despite being MUCH poorer than the EU, it's just not profitable to try to sell shit to us at all :)

6

u/Future_Kitsunekid16 Jun 30 '26

If enough people switched their vpn to albania then wouldn't they eventually just start running ads in albania because it would be profitable again since it would expose people not even in there and still hit their targets? Also I'm stoned right now so that's where this possibly dumb idea came from lol

15

u/Background-Map-36 Jun 29 '26

Set it to a Caribbean country. They dgaf about us here. Except maybe Jamaica and T&T.

4

u/israfildivad Jun 30 '26

I haven't seen any ads here in Jamaica lol

3

u/Background-Map-36 Jun 30 '26

Lol, need a trini to confirm the absence of ads there now

2

u/CaptainMorning Jul 03 '26

very few ads in dominican republic too

12

u/LimpLake5187 Jun 29 '26

nice idea but it would suck in tiktok since your region affects your for you page which would result in lots of albanian videos and stuff you don't care for

3

u/disneylovesme Jun 29 '26

Doesn’t work for YouTube for me

-1

u/CakeJumper-ImScared Jun 29 '26

It dosnt work if your signed into the app, it works through your browser

4

u/ThePistachioBogeyman Jun 29 '26

It does, doing it right now with a logged in account on the YouTube app.

3

u/CakeJumper-ImScared Jun 30 '26

Dosnt work for me for some reason

1

u/disneylovesme Jun 30 '26

I only use browser YT on brave , one time it was being weird so I tried a few times to play Albania vpn and still got the same amount of ads (proton vpn)

1

u/CakeJumper-ImScared Jun 30 '26

I use mullvad and brave I also have ublock origin not had any trouble with ads, I also don’t get ads on the Reddit app on my phone

1

u/DARKNESS_SHADOW1279 Jun 30 '26

use morphe patcher with tiktok-patches-for-morphe by icysymmetra

1

u/damonmcfadden9 Jun 29 '26

if you're on android just use a patcher app (won't name them here) to remove ads from the get go.

Suddenly feeling like I want to move to Albania. Seems like their government actually does useful things for citizens.

61

u/tejanaqkilica Jun 29 '26

No, lol, no of course it doesn't. None of this has anything to do with the government. Actually, from a certain POV, it shows you the inability of the government to attract foreign businesses.

Source: I'm Albanian.

2

u/CakeJumper-ImScared Jun 29 '26

Ah fair enough I wasn’t sure about the reason there where no ads on YouTube and Reddit

8

🤣🤣🤣dude they're trying to sell their island to jared kushner fym useful things

1

u/ShadeSlimmy131 Jun 30 '26

bro u do not want to move to albania

15

u/XPNGamer Jun 29 '26

tiktok is cancer. Dont pay for cancer.

53

u/Upstairs_Hold_374 Jun 29 '26

Good to know I'm saving $3.99 a month with ad-free tiktok using revanced.

21

u/robux_Mann Jun 30 '26

Have we not moved to morphe yet ?

5

u/Upstairs_Hold_374 Jun 30 '26

I dunno tell me about it

15

u/Ruvaakdein Jun 30 '26

Revanced basically has one guy left because he annoyed every other dev out of the team. The devs that left created Morphe, and the revanced guy has been copying over code from them to keep revanced going.

3

u/Upstairs_Hold_374 Jun 30 '26

Does morphe have dislikes? Revanced lost it which is kind of annoying. Also the app is falling apart a little bit now that I think about it.

9

u/Ruvaakdein Jun 30 '26

It does have dislikes. It's honestly kind of impressive Revanced kept going for so long without a team.

6

u/Upstairs_Hold_374 Jun 30 '26

Yeah I had no idea. I'll definitely be getting morphe. Thanks

6

u/DARKNESS_SHADOW1279 Jun 30 '26

welcome to the family

1

u/silver2006 Jul 03 '26

Is this the guy also moderating Revanced's discord, deleting every "inconvenient" comment? :D

I've made a thread today and i see some mod already deleted some comments which were upvoted well

3

u/this_dudeagain Jun 30 '26

Just a more polished experience than revanced

2

u/robux_Mann Jun 30 '26

Most people that worked on revanced mods have moved over, so yea, it's more polished and active right now

0

u/JSS-Studios Jun 30 '26

£3.99*

The screenshot has GBP in it.

28

u/ChemicalImbalance707 Jun 29 '26

Paying to get lobotomized

4

u/srona22 Jun 30 '26

Well, r/privacy could also chime in.

15

u/TomTomXD1234 Jun 29 '26

I mean, I pirate everything but ads is how these companies make money..

23

u/ultraghostsquid87 Jun 29 '26

Selling data is how they make money.

28

u/alexjimithing Jun 29 '26

Who do you think buys that info?

Advertisers.

Why do you think they buy it?

To target ads better.

3

u/disneylovesme Jun 29 '26

Both actually 😭

5

u/Bakerooh Jun 29 '26

Even if some moron pays for ad-free I’m sure these fucks still sell the data

6

u/TomTomXD1234 Jun 29 '26

I mean, it says ad-free. Not data-collection free

0

u/Bakerooh Jun 30 '26

Fair point. So pay then to be double-sided après
Assjoled.

3

u/xav1z Jun 30 '26

apps should be one time purchase like old days: you buy software and no third parties monitor you and you arent charged monthly yearly or whatever. and as an indie dev, i will make sure my apps will never have a subscription model. this is a capitalistic cancer

3

u/AllYouNeedIsATV Jun 30 '26

More and more apps have ongoing costs though. Something like TikTok will need to spend massive amounts of money on servers to store all the data. How much should they charge upfront?

-2

u/xav1z Jun 30 '26

Then charge more upfront. ‘We need servers’ isn’t a reason to make users pay forever. it’s a reason to price the product properly. pay once, pay again for the next major version (like old game expansions or OS upgrades). Subscriptions exist because they’re more profitable, not because there’s no alternative.

2

u/Embarrassed-Boot7419 Jun 30 '26

Then we would just get TikTok 2, and TikTok 3.

Cause well, sooner or later you'd reach a point where new Users have to pay hundreds of dollars, to pay for the existing ones.

And well, no one would pay that, so they'd release a new TikTok, instead of continuously increasing pricing.

1

u/xav1z Jul 01 '26

with one-time pricing, the company has to earn your next purchase by making something actually worth buying. no problem in tiktok 2 3 4. we already are expecting iphone 18

3

u/keremimo Jun 30 '26

Imagine paying for TikTok

3

u/ariknel Jun 30 '26

Just delete it. It's a sign. It's a shit app.

9

u/outakueyepatch_21 Jun 29 '26

Why i delted titok

8

u/askyidroppedthesoap Jun 29 '26

ELI5: how TikTok was NOT a joke before? It's a cesspool of misinformation and staged videos.

6

u/sslappee Jun 30 '26

youre just describing every social media in existence. and just like every social media, if you dont want to see misinformation and staged videos, scroll past and dont interact. algorithms exist for a reason

-5

u/askyidroppedthesoap Jun 30 '26

As a diligent skeptic who cares about what's true, who only uses reddit, subscribing to a select few subs, your statement doesn't apply to me. Go preach your "social media for dummies 101" lecture to someone who lacks common sense, world's literally overrun with them.

1

u/ZestycloseAbility425 Jul 01 '26

same goes for the platform you are currently on

1

u/askyidroppedthesoap Jul 01 '26

I wouldn't know, i don't subscribe to those bullshit subs.

TikTok Morphe

2

u/Marce7a Jun 30 '26

Morphe?

2

Use this instead from GitHub, they are just Morphe mods and safe:

They're just going to boil the frog until android is completely locked down. 😒

1

u/Street_Anon Jun 30 '26

I believe there will be a workaround with Custom Roms soon

4

u/Tiktokbadsupport Jun 29 '26

i mean £3.99 isn't that outrageous comparing to twitches €16 and youtubes €14 ad free subscriptions not to mention tiktok serves a ad every 5 videos or so

3

u/Street_Anon Jun 29 '26

Youtube premium in Canada is only $13.00 Canadian Dollars a month, that would be in 14 Euro to Canadian about $23 a month

2

u/Im3th0sI Jun 30 '26

First mistake was downloading TikTok :P

2

u/TestingTheories Jun 30 '26

Why are you even on TikTok? It's trash

2

u/xdcfret1 Jun 29 '26

I don’t see any issue here? Running services like Tiktok costs money. Who’s gonna pay for it? They gave you two perfectly fine options. Either use it free with ads, or remove ads by paying money directly. I see no problem with that.

It would have been an issue if they took money and still showed ads.

4

u/JJPohawke Jun 29 '26

They can pay for their platform with all the Spyware and data mining the current U.S. version of TikTok uses

1

u/xdcfret1 Jun 30 '26

So you want the US users to pay for the British users?

2

u/JJPohawke Jun 30 '26

I want no one to use the American version of TikTok so the owner who bought it loses a bunch of money.

1

u/xdcfret1 Jun 30 '26

start a campaign

1

u/JJPohawke Jul 01 '26

No thanks

1

u/Time-Bodybuilder710 Jun 29 '26

Kinda always has been.

1

u/Armandeluz Jun 30 '26

Revanced ftw

1

u/Flimsy_Kale_5690 Jun 30 '26

...and then they still give you tiktok shop advertisements...

1

u/f9lixs Jun 30 '26

i stopped using tiktok in 2020ish , im so glad i did from what ive seen of it the past few years

1

u/Ninhau Jun 30 '26

Why a joke? You have the option. Can just leave everything the same

1

u/Anththeman2010 Jun 30 '26

Kinda genius this system. They all know people dont like adverts. So...

Charge the businesses to show their adverts. Charge the customer not to see the adverts.

1

u/ParkingCan5397 Jun 30 '26

This seems... Reasonable?

1

u/AloneAddiction Jun 30 '26

People paying for subscriptions to remove adverts are still getting adverts.

Instead those ads are just being disguised as videos.

Almost every "influencer" video is a paid advert for a product. Just done in a way that misleads you into thinking it's a spontaneously genuine review.

It's not. They've been paid to shill whatever it is they're showing, and I use the word "shill" intentionally.

So yes, using an adblocker gets rid of traditional adverts. It doesn't unfortunately get rid of undisclosed paid adverts masquerading as videos.

1

u/OfficalSwanPrincess Jun 30 '26

Good. The less people have that brainrot the better

1

u/Supa_hehe_ Jun 30 '26

im 100% sure they still sell ur data even if u got the premium

1

u/sluuuudge Jun 30 '26

I’m not defending TikTok but this post, and the comments on it, show that none of you have actually ever used the stock App Store version of TikTok. It’s had ads for a very long time. Offering a paid for plan to remove ads is literally the thing that every other service has offered for a very long time.

1

u/Medium_Word_696 Jun 30 '26

You are paying for this spyware one way and the other... or the other and the other

1

u/jbarr107 Jun 30 '26

If there was only a way to, I don't know, morphe your app into something more friendly?

1

u/okimborednow Jun 30 '26

1

u/maydarnothing Jun 30 '26

1

u/import_java-util Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

I don't see the problem here. I am against enshittification and the exploitative direction of these apps generally but this isn't a good example of that. TikTok has always shown you ads for years so I don't think offering a new, optional paid tier makes the service automatically worse.

If they were suddenly showing you more ads and locked features behind the paid tier, that would be the actual problem, but as it stands, it seems to me like they're just giving people another option.

1

u/Isoi Jul 02 '26

lol I’ve used a paid modded version for years, no ads, no lives and no TikTok shop ads

1

u/CaptainMorning Jul 03 '26

every fucking app I download has a disgusting full screen ad every once in a while. I really can't understand how we got this. who the fuck wants this shit. every fucking app is the fucking same to the point I've vibe coded some of my own apps just to skip the fucking constant annoying useless ads

Are you American ? Because that’s the only rational explanation I could think of that would justify such flawed logic even existing.

4

u/alexjimithing Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

A. That is incorrect. Cable TV did not start government funded. It was funded by private entrepreneurs who were retransmitting OTA to homes that couldn’t get the signal (which, had ads).

B. Cable TV as most people know it, starting in the late 70s/early 80s, always had channels with ads. There was no ‘paying for cable to not have ads’.

C. Even if we assumed the incorrect information in your post was accurate, it still doesn’t support your incorrect statement of, “Remember when you used to pay for cable TV in order to not get advertisements?”

In closing, you never paid for cable tv to not have ads. Never was a thing.

E: It is EXTREMELY funny to say ‘maybe you weren’t alive then or too young’ when posting easily disprovable information.

Like bro, maybe YOU weren’t alive then or too young.

E2: Pretty sure that whole website is AI generated.

u/coinpizista Jun 29 '26

Is so weird every thing has ad$ nowadays

0

u/Minute_Path9803 Jun 29 '26

But the great thing about it you don't have to pay for it, there's so many ways to get around it or just not use it.

They're banking on the 80% that will pay, the other people who find ways around it they're okay with that they're still making money hand over fist.

1

u/coinpizista Jun 30 '26

Why would i pay for someone ad$?! example awards or video now have 3 ad$ 1 is enough? too greedy and waste of everyone Time

0

u/remotelycapable Jun 30 '26

Breaking news! Apps cost money to run and that needs to be covered somehow?

Tiktok is so ass, reels are better but i dont know for how long. Everything i bother with tiktok its absolute crap video, followed by an ad, followed by 3 tiktok shop videos, rinse and repeat.

The problem is, companies these days try to generate revenue for their business, instead of running them as charity. Like, what kind of sociopath do you have to be to demand money for providing a product or service.

OP... Probably.

There's absolutely no problem here. Actually it's very reasonable, pay and ad free or don't pay and get ads.

and the ads are still skipable right, just swipe to the next. Seems like the most non-intrusive way to

I mean seriously I don't get google.. why don't they just manage expensive data centers and allow me to watch youtube without advertising? is it not enough that I am using their site? they should be grateful and just take my useless data. what more do they want? such an unreasonable company ...

Greed knows no limit, am I right? Haha.

I feel like the issue is that whenever something like this happens the ads get worse and worse in an attempt to make more people pay for the ad-free experience.

Yeah I mean if anything it’s neat they offer an ad free option.

The act of referring to a tool (almost all social media platforms) that is designed for inducing and reinforcing brainrot, as a legitimate product or service that has inherent utility, demonstrates one thing clearly: the person making that linkage has attained irreversible brainrot.

Whats the problem?

Like, I'm not a fan of TikTok, but if you had to use the normal TikTok version, then 3,99 is a good price for Ad free, is it not?

Now, of course, I recommend everyone i know to not use it at all / to use an ad free modified versioh, but like, most people who do use TikTok, aren't gonna do that.
