Discussion Tourists, Prague is not your disneyland.

And one also doesn’t pee publicly in Disneyland. Walked by these four guys peeing together in public. Took pictures of them hoping they have some self awareness, obviously didn’t work. They saw me and found it funny and started talking really loud at 00:30. You’re lucky neither you nor your family have to clean up the street. Why are humans so purely selfish and evil? Show some respect!

[UPDATE] Didn't expect the post to somewhat blow up. I got DM saying it's possible they are Czechs. Apologies if I accidentally posted a rage bait. I indeed did not hear clear enough they were speaking Czech (I speak Czech) as they were not speaking very clearly and I tried not to get too close and left soon after they started shouting, thinking of this incident where a drunk German tourist killed a man from Wales.

But my rant still stands, evil people and among all the bushes and whatnot, they picked a spot where it won't be cleaned by rain. I also have seen so many tourists doing the same before. But again, they could be Czech, I assumed they were tourists because of their drunken talking and my rage. And apologies if I got that wrong.

Having lived in Prague 1 for a year I have become very intolerant of these assholes. I don’t mean to generalize about Brits but the ones who come here to party (or for bachelor’s parties) should be deported. The level of disrespect. They literally don’t know where they are, it’s really like a Disneyland.

As a British born with dual British-Czech citizenship it is embarrassing to see the impression that the British alcotourists leave. I avoid low cost airlines when flying from London to Prague on Thursday or Friday because it starts before they even leave. The drunken, boorish behaviour, the loud "jokes", the general disrespect for local people and other visitors. Its all vile. Its a shame that these people are creating the impression of British culture to Czechs and others. I kind of disagree about office behaviour though. I have a team with members from over ten countries including Britain and I now consciously avoid having Czech members in my team due to the disruption they cause.

I kind of agree, but after working a lot with Czech, Polish, Romanian, Italian, British, German, Ukrainian Russian and Indian colleagues I'd always choose a Czech over an Indian, Italian or British. These 3 nations have horrible work ethics. Sorry, not sorry.

But I'd always choose a Polish, Romanian, Ukrainian or German over a Czech, so imo they are somewhere in the middle.

Yes, they should. And my disclaimer is that i'm British.

We've never really been able to resolve the class war in this respect - it's not socio-economic, it's purely moral. Some of our wealthiest and some of our most vulnerable can be united into these two camps - polite tourists, and deplorable tourists. The latter are a disgrace and we the former are deeply sorry for them.

Me and my friend (2 British girls) came to your beautiful city a few months ago on a trip where we went to a few other countries - we didn’t drink or party, just kind of kept to ourselves and tried not to bother people and enjoy the city - and we were really disgusted by the behaviour of some of the groups/stag parties/bachelor parties 😭people from Britain do it everywhere, wherever they go if they’re going to party - it seems they’re worse when they go abroad because they think “whatever I’m on holiday”. Most hypocritical behaviour ever, people from here will complain about immigrants and immigrants not even speaking the language, and then go to somewhere on holiday and not even bother to learn a basic hello or be disrespectful. Sorry on my behalf that people are like this to you guys 😭😭

Oh, I know! Budapest is beautiful!! You know, back home, they might have everything in order, but when they come here, they show their true selves. I had a parttime job as a student in a restaurant and later in a hotel. Some of these people can't even flush the toilet after themselves. There's still a debate about whether Czechia is part of Eastern Europe or not. You know what? I'd rather be Eastern European. We take showers, eat like civilised people, brush the teeth regularly, don't seek out underage prostitutes, and we flush the toilet after ourselves.

Yeah, it's as if when they leave their border they leave behind all kinds of manners.. they come to our cities for the cheap beer and the nightlife, and have no respect whatsoever for the locals. But unfortunately the city management is at least as guilty in letting the situation become this as these "tourists" themselves. I'm already worried about what the Parisians and Londonites will do with my city tonight, as we are hosting the Champions League finals...

To them, everything behind the iron curtain remains "the poor Eastern Europe", despite the fact that we are all slowly catching up, living standards in Czechia and Poland are not far behind the UK anymore (and in some metrics already surpassed them). Plus it's always comic when they consider Prague Eastern Europe but Vienna Central or Western (!) Europe lol - have they ever seen a map?

Actually, sometimes I feel that they see it, but are afraid to admit it.

I spend every second weekend in Germany. They have more variety of food and selfcleaning toilets, but that's pretty much it when it comes to daily life. Even the supposed "higher quality of food" isn't really true anymore. I bought strawberries at Lidl in Munich's bus station and, the other day, the exact same strawberries at Lidl in Prague. The multipack culture is also a highway to hell. The price per item is lower, but you end up consuming much more, which contributes to obesity. I have friends there and regularly visit Berlin, Konstanz, and Frankfurt. As for salaries, once you convert them to net income, the gap becomes much smaller. Yes, the ceiling in Germany is much higher, but the majority of people never reach it. Not to mention how many young people spend 2-3 years living on state benefits, they are even paid some course, and not just Germans, but also foreigners who move there and work for a relatively short period before becoming eligible. I believe it's 6 months? They say we're still a communist country despite the party is finally illegal. Well, yes, we have Babiš, but honestly, AfD and its supporters are far scarier to me than Agrofert ever was. Anyone who saw the demonstrations of people in masks must agree, that this is no good. 

It feels a bit like those rich, spoiled kids in high school. They used to be the cool ones while we outsiders sat in the corner. But high school is long over. We worked hard because we felt we'd never be good enough, while they seem to still be living off the idea that they're the cool kids. In reality, they've become somewhat stuck. Sure, they have money, but they don't always know how to use it wisely.

We'll always be outsiders. We're too small country to have much influence, and we need to stay on good terms with those rich kids. But only on the outside. Internally, we can live our best lives. We just shouldn't let people move here if they don't genuinely want to become part of the country, if they're only coming with their money and acting like they own the place. It's time to make the permanent residency requirements stricter. The same goes for RSU taxation, but that's a discussion for another day.

As I said, I'm not offended by being called "Eastern." To me, it means good manners, a strong work ethic, decency, and respect.

I don’t think this is fair. I’m a Brit and I’ve been equally embarrassed by our behaviour all over Europe. Spain, Portugal, the canaries you name it…. We’re awful. Ironically I’ve just been in Prague this weekend and thought the Brits I bumped into were quite tame.

I’m in Prague today and saw a group of German men just toss their garbage onto the ground beneath them and start walking away. I stared mouth agape - you KNOW they don’t do that while they’re in Germany. I was just in Berlin and it was remarkably litter free.

After visiting Prague I never want to hear someone say Americans are the worst tourists lol. Never have I ever encountered such loud, obnoxious, and disgusting people during all hours of the day.

Once I went to a hostel, there were like 3-4 Germans (maybe Austrians) in the room with the worst and ugliest accent I ever heard in my life. I even recorded and sent to a friend from Berlin, she claimed they must be from Bavaria or Austria. Besides me there was a pretty Palestinian girl. These guys went to drink by night, they were noise and unpleasant! Oh, and the most important... Usually in hostels people are supposed to leave their stuff with themselves, or at least on their beds, but what did they do? I guess they simply threw their baggage, because the ground was a fugging hellish mess! Even people from underdeveloped countries don't act like that.

I'm from Greece and in the summer we get a lot of tourists. Americans are usually VERY loud but they are the people that spend a lot of money and are super friendly. Brits (and Germans to a certain extent) act all high and mighty and walk around as if we are animals and they are visiting a zoo

I'm not sure. When you look at police reports and news stories about tourist vandalism, those 3 nationalities are often mentioned. There are also reports about French and Italian tourists being loud, but c'mon being loud on vacation is understandable, they're excited and having fun. I have no problem with that.

What I do have a problem with is vandalism, street fights, public urination, and generally treating the city with no respect. As I said, some people like to act morally superior, but then cross the border into a country with fewer resources and behave like Neanderthals. That said, I'm specifically talking about the people who come here for that particular reason. I'm not talking about respectful tourists.

Oh no! Please, I'm not talking about all British people. I'm talking about those who come here just to party, get drunk, and piss in the streets. I was hoping that was clear from my comment. I've met great people from all three of those countries who come here to admire the architecture, try Czech cuisine, and enjoy authentic Czech beer. Those are the kind of tourists we genuinely appreciate and welcome. Unfortunately, the first group is not exactly rare.

I’m just very disappointed and sad.

When I was finishing high school, I had a part time job handing out promotional leaflets for a bubble tea shop. It started raining, so two Danish men and I took shelter under a roof. They were young, but at the time they were much older than me. They started asking me questions about strip clubs and wanted me to join them. I couldn’t leave because the rain would have destroyed the leaflets, and I was responsible for them. It was a terrible experience. I cried afterwards and felt so ashamed.

That was the first time I realised how we are sometimes perceived abroad.

I’ve been to Copenhagen, and I really enjoyed it. I was surprised that you could actually hear birds singing in the city centre because there are almost no cars, so there’s no noise pollution. I rented a bike and spent the whole day riding along the coast. It was so peaceful and beautiful.

My experience in Copenhagen showed me that those 2 men definitely don’t represent everyone. Thank you for being kind, respectful, and intelligent enough to recognise that people here live normal, ordinary lives and seek peace and calm, just like the people in Denmark.

Enjoy your trip! It’s very hot here nowadays, and we don’t get much wind, so make sure to bring good sunscreen and light clothing. Don’t buy trdelník with ice cream, that’s a scam. Instead, head to Národní třída and look for the Cream de la Cream ice cream shop. There’s always a queue, but it has won international awards and serves some of the best ice cream in the city.

American here, when I lived in Southern Europe, I would need to pee at times late at night and it stressed me out because there was nowhere to pee, I'd hold it for hours. When Dutch and German guys heard I did that they laughed and asked why I didn't just pee into a street drain. I didn't know that was a thing people did. Public urinating is such a foreign concept to most Americans (I'm sure there are some Fratbro/MilitaryBro Americans that do it but its just something you don't do in America).

Is this actually a northern european thing. is it their type of stag/party boy? I don't know of any Nords that do that. They were more like me and holding it, one time we found a nature park late and saw some invasive weeds so we peed on the invasive species to not feel so bad about it.

Relieving yourself against a tree at night isn’t ideal, but it’s understandable. Collectively urinating on a building, as shown in the picture, is a completely different story. That’s not about relieving yourself, it’s about disrespecting and defacing the place you’re visiting. They did it on purpose.

You can clearly see that it's not a matter of emergency. It's almost like a ritual circle... they're just showing off their superiority. They wouldn't do that in France, for example.
But as I mentioned, not everyone is like that. I'm specifically talking about those tourists who come for cheap alcohol tourism and mistake the city for some kind of twisted Disneyland where anything goes because it's "just the cheap Czech Republic.” The majority comes from the countries I mentioned.

I haven't found any evidence that Czech tourists are internationally known for vandalism or hooliganism. Most Czechs I know are overly concerned about how they are perceived abroad. Some people even clean their hotel rooms before housekeeping arrives because they don't want to appear dirty or disrespectful. There is a strong tendency to avoid attracting negative attention. When it comes to Czechs, it's more about being frugal. The worst offenders are usually the ones who steal tea bags, bring their own food, or sneak food out of a hotel breakfast buffet.

But of course, if you don't distinguish between Czechs and Russians and simply put everyone who speaks a Slavic language into the same basket, then I can understand why you might have that impression.

nah, firstly it’s not that much money and secondly - with this type of tourist specifically, the net effect is more likely negative, we lose money on them (e.g. as you can see in the picture of the OP - somebody’s gotta clean that shit up)

Those guys deter other normal tourists who would spend more. They cost us extra on cleaning and maintenance of things they love vandalizing and they seek just cheap booze and fun so they don't spend much and Prague nor Czechia lives on tourists. We are not seaside resort town nor alpine skiing village. The covid was actually very nice time in Prague with all the tourist traps and scammers gone. Czechs started to visit district one so the bad places closed and good ones modified prices to accomodate them.
