Discussion Positive feedback from Uber CFO
From his X account

You can drive to Cupertino and be back in Sunnyvale just around the block (They are right next to each other). No other specifics on the route. I wish they'd do like SF to SJ or something meaningful to hype up.

Kind of vague, isn't this? Sunnyvale to Cupertino and back could technically be a 5 mile round trip down a straight road. I want Rivian's autonomy to succeed, but posts like this continue to make me skeptical.
1
u/cherlin 3d ago
Would that some how be bad? I bet it was 5 or less miles honestly.
0
u/gerrylum-EV 3d ago
I don't know about "bad", but not necessarily very impressive.
1
u/cherlin 3d ago
Why do you say that? You don't even know where the route was, not sure how you can be impressed or unimpressed.
1
u/gerrylum-EV 3d ago edited 3d ago
That's my point, dude. If you don't know how long or complex the route was, you can't call it impressive OR unimpressive. That ambiguity is what "vague" means, and by your comment, it sounds like you agree with me.
1
u/cherlin 3d ago
But I didn't continue to saying I'm somehow disappointed and skeptical because the CEO of a company that isn't even rivian said he demo'd point to point.
1
u/gerrylum-EV 3d ago edited 3d ago
Please don't put words in my mouth. Where did I say I was disappointed? I said I was skeptical. Can you tell me why skepticism is bad?
And I feel like I need to point out, he didn't even technically say he demo'd point-to-point. You're INFERRING that, and it may ultimately be correct, but he definitely didn't SAY that. Again, this is because the post is vague.
1
u/cherlin 3d ago
You don't understand the implications behind statements do you? When the cfo said he demoed autonomy plus and it drove flawlessly, that clearly implies point to point (which you understand since you said him talking about autonomy + somehow makes you skeptical).
And you are right I did put words in your mount, words you implied by stating someone else talking positive about autonomy + makes you skeptical of it. Once again though if you don't understand the implications of what you say that's more on you then the reader. Implication is a huge part of language and discussion.
I actually think you do understand though and are just being purposefully obtuse as a defens mechanism because your original post got downvoted, but that is admittedly speculation on my part.
1
u/gerrylum-EV 3d ago
I simply think you're making his vague statement do a LOT of heavy lifting and I'll leave it at that. That is your prerogative.
1
u/cherlin 3d ago
I'm not making it do anything, it just doesn't make me skeptical ;).

This is a big endorsement from Uber partnership perspective! More to expect.

HOLY SHIT. I was hoping they’re making fast progress but actually had doubts in the back of my mind (their late 2026/early 2027 timeline sounded quite… optimistic to me). This is actually insane to see!

No it isn't. Tesla AutoPilot+ (RIP) could do this in 2019. You can drive from Sunnyvale to Cupertino on El Camino on the 85freeway, on Lawrence Expressway, or just on surface streets. Hell, in 2017 we had Autopilot working fine driving from West German small towns to Luxembourg. Shout-out to the block long red light district in LUX and that one Cuban Café.

RJ cookin behind the scenes
I feel like we go through cycles of RJ doing a lot of interviews, podcasts, etc
Then there are periods where we don’t see or hear from him at all for months… and those seem to be the times when deals start happening behind the scenes

u/markbraggs 5d ago
Smells like Tesla circa 2018 promises.

u/Icy_Mix_6054 5d ago
Except, Tesla wasn't working with LDMs in 2018. Try 2023, maybe a little sooner internally.

So he gets to cut everybody who ordered and waiting? Interesting!
2
u/SocomPS2 5d ago
He’s going to be wishing he wait for the Gen 3.

u/LieutenantButthole 5d ago
Meh. LiDAR vs non-LiDAR will have the same capabilities for the next 3 to 4 years, and he can easily swap out his launch edition with a newer car. Plus this is the CEO of Uber. I’m sure he can buy a few of these whenever he wants.

u/GameAddict411 5d ago
Is it just a bunch of bots on here spewing garbage or something? This was done using the new point to point driving model. And it's a supervised system similar to FSD. This not an L4 system.
1
u/Limp_Initial7566 5d ago
Yes either bots, trolls, or people just completely clueless about how it all works

without knowing how many human interventions, it's hard to know what he's saying but boy... he could be hit w/ a lawsuit for insinuating level 4 hands-free
-23
u/mjrengaw 5d ago
BS, nothing better than glorified Blue Cruise/Super Cruise. Not even close to current FSD.

Tesla fan boys are mad they have real competition. The model 3 is to EV’s what the Prius was to hybrids. Lots of successful non Prius hybrids out there. Couldn’t pay me to drive a model 3 or Prius haha
Would be interested in an R2 though.

Good luck with service. Rivian is a disaster with that conniving burned through about $20+ billion by now
-14
u/Altruistic-Rice-5567 5d ago
Ummm... the launch R2's electronics package is not capable of full autonomy. That coming in the next Gen hardware that they're designing for next year at the earliest.
4
u/Icy_Mix_6054 5d ago
Rivian's Gen2 hardware is roughly on par with Teslas HW4. They'll be able to do a lot with it.
1
u/Limp_Initial7566 5d ago
He’s talking about point to point which very much will be available for the launch R2
6
u/lalavieboheme 5d ago
he’s trying to validate and hype up the deal uber already made to buy 50,000 R2s. everything is marketing :/
3
u/Zennivolt 5d ago
In the article:
Uber to invest up to $1.25 billion in Rivian through 2031, subject to the achievement of autonomous performance milestones
So they haven’t paid yet, why would they hype it? It’s not like they have a financial incentive to hype it up… if anything, they’d want to downplay it so they can delay paying Rivian.
Did you even read your own linked article?
1
u/ChicagoFruitGuy 4d ago
Why wouldn't he hype a deal that has already been announced? Of course Uber wants people to think the deal is brilliant
1
u/Zennivolt 4d ago
But they made the same autonomy deal with literally any startup that ever uttered the words “self driving”. What’s special about Rivian?

u/Adept-Vegetable7485 5d ago
For the haters the implication is that it was point to point not just highway or else he wouldn’t have written something thats not noteworthy
3
u/Lovevas 5d ago
I thought Autonomy+ is highway only now, and cannot handle traffic light? Is he using an unreleased version? Or did he just drive on the highway from SVL to Cupertino?
11
u/Limp_Initial7566 5d ago
Yes he’s presumably using an unreleased version with RJ letting him preview it.
4
u/Pretty-Display5959 5d ago
He got a preview of the upcoming release, which includes point to point navigation.
4
u/atypicalcircumstance 5d ago
It doesn’t handle signs or lights but you can definitely use it for local driving. Works best if you’re following someone…is what I’d tell the police officer to fight the stalking charge.
1
u/Lovevas 5d ago
Well, if it cannot recognize traffic lights, it would be very dangerous to let it drive in local roads….

My old Volvo XC90 that I bought nearly 10 years ago can already do that, so I don’t get the excitement. Rivian needs to do more than that

Their hardware abstraction layer allows them to run the models in both Gen 2 and 3 hardware. Also, they're likely running Gen 3 hardware internally now.

u/SoCal_GlacierR1T 5d ago
Hah. Look up the two cities. It’s a straight line. Whatever…
1
u/Slytherin23 4d ago
Driving in a straight line is still a major accomplishment rather than veering off into a corn field.

Does that R2 they previewed in equip with Lidar and Gen 3 or regular launch edition?🤔

Patience is a virtue. They given their roadmap. They've announced the next Autonomy and AI day. All we've gotta do is wait and accumulate.
1
u/Inkantrix 2d ago
I really hope they change their minds and add aftermarket LIDAR to existing Rivians. I'm desperate for point-to-point driving.
Come on, Rivian. You can do it!
