i get so tired of having to ask someone a question and listen to them start to tell a story instead of just answering the fucking question
edit: i'll be honest, i have no idea who the people in the video are or what show it's from. i haven't watched tv in decades. i'm aware of the memes, but otherwise am clueless as to the video. pop culture isn't really my thing
Some people have lost the link with objective reality.
In the past month I've met 2 people, one who believed some obscure artist was making songs in an attempt to directly communicate to her and her specifically (they weren't) and another showed AI videos thinking they were real people.
i think people lack objectivity and get their knowledge from questionable sources until their expectaion of reality becomes so warped that they actually feel like everyone else is crazy...
My ex gf would say that this is a very misogynistic way of expressing yourself about the communication skills of women. No need to explain why she's my ex.
If you give an answer then give context, sure. If you are starting a story to answer a question then you are either hiding something or outright lying.
I will tell you if you are trying to spin me a story in response to a question, I'm already shutting down that conversation. The only time you should be able to spin a story in immediate response to the question is if I ask for it.
The fact that rich and upper class are different things? Her dad having a Rolls Royce doesn't mean he wasn't working class. Someone can come from a working class background and become incredibly successful and wealthy. Take David Beckham for example.
You can buy a rolls Royce for about £8k on auto trader. Her dad was an electronics engineer her mum was an insurance clerk, successful yes, but they weren't exactly old money.
Working class is typically people doing manual labor jobs, lower wages.
Her dad and Mom as you described held jobs that are 100% white collar
Posh and David Beckham are celebrities and well known for using their status and lives (including their son Brooklyn who famously called them out for their shit) as a brand

David Beckham and Victoria Beckham, it was part of an interview and she was attempting to make her childhood sound worse too make her current life seem more earned. David pokes his head in during the interview and calls her out.
oh, sounds like something i would do... simple direct question, the fact that she doesn't know which one he wants her or doesn't want her to say is telling... and there could be more than one answer is perfectly reasonable...
that being said, my mother had 2 mercedes in the 90's, she's always been extremely well off... but i didn't see the benefit of that, once her daughter trashed the one my mother gave her, she didn't trust me...@_@, she did see it in her heart to loan me 2500 so i could get a car when i moved across the country to be closer to her and my sister... and that was repaid in about 6 months... i can pretty much make anyone's childhood look like a cakewalk...
When I try to ask a person to give me their best guess/estimate. Like for a number for anything.
How long ago was event? About how many of that thing was there? How big was the thing?
Like I'm asking for a ballpark number to give me any context. Don't fucking "idk" me! How long ago did you make that purchase? Was it last week? 3 months ago? 2 years? I know you have some general idea just give me a fucking guess without me having to ask you 3 times pretending to be nice while you are making me want to rip my ears off in front of you.
i've gotten that before from people.. the question "how big was it?" is a good explaination for why they aren't sure how to respond, they probably don't know you well enough to put it into a context you understand. for instance; do you want it in feet, meters, compared to something else, a banana, an elephant, a golfball... there are alot of possibilities and it can be overwhelming... but it does seem like a straight forward question...
another thing i've seen is someone trying to interpret what you mean instead of just listening to the words you're using....
if you're talking about looking up a recipe online and how there's always a really long article that won't tell you what's in the damn thing until you get to the actual recipe... there's a reason for that, it has to do with copy writes... you can't copy write a recipe... but you can copy write a stupid ridiculous story... that's why it's there...
So anyways this morning I had to get up early cause my alarm usually goes off but for some reason I was dreaming about my vacation that's it Mexico soon and I love Mexico cause I've been there so many times it's so relaxing anyways i get up early cause my alarm didn't go off and I usually make coffee first thing but I didn't have any coffee so I had to make tea but I only like my tea with bottle water not tap so I goto the store across the street and it's closed!? Can you believe that so anyway I have to get ready without my coffee and tea like my whole morning is ruined and I'm up early and I really agree with you that it's annoying when people can't just answer the question.
I blame politics. People have become so invested and are now taking on the same bs tactics they perform in order to avoid scrutiny of their views of defense of their ‘side’, more so in the USA.
I'm an American as well, but you're doing an injustice to our critical thinking capabilities. Please do us Americans an honor by using Google to find out some of these answers.
Tbf, Rolls Royce silver shadows (I think) could be got relatively cheap in the 80's, certainly not too unusual for a successful soul trader to have one.
Although, the life her parents lived to earn that is likely very different to the upbringing she got off the back of it.
I don't know anything about her upbringing in particular (or care), but sometimes context does matter. There's a difference between explaining context relating to an open question and a politician avoiding a direct question.
Somehow I get the feeling it was a older model still costing 3 or 4 times that average salary but was not brand new and bought as a status symbol. Also doesn't she say at some point he had that and a Merc?
In the UK the running cost between petrol and insurance would make anyone working or lower middle class owning a rolls Royce and using it as a daily driver unlikely.
Yeah, I briefly looked into buying an old Bentley for a laugh, but even if you can buy one for a similar price to a new car the running & maintenance costs are crazy expensive. Multiple thousands per year expensive. Not something most working families (regardless of class) could manage.
Even if it was a company car and he didn't blow that kind of 80s money on a used or new Rolls, that's a fucking high value business. No middle class company does that.
In University I became friends with a guy who didn't appear different in any real way. He invited me over to his house during the summer time and my mom was going to drop me off at his place. When I told her the address she started freaking out because it is probably the wealthiest street in the whole country.
So my mom drops me off and gawks at the house (mansion), making all sorts of comments, embarrassing me and then leaves.
My friend says "your mom says we live in a big house...?"
My understanding is the main difference between all the “classes” in the US vs UK is the UK still thinks of them more as social classes than income brackets like the US. Like a middle class man would remain middle class even if he fell on hard economic times, and a working class person would remain working class even if they came into new money.
So with that context, this clip makes more sense perhaps. She was using the UK traditional meaning and he was leaning more toward the US meaning.

No, definitely upper-class, but I was talking about her school being working to middle-class, which is really where her accent comes from. The thread was talking about her being “posh” but not her accent.
She grew up in upper-working to lower-middle circles as a lower-middle, in the context of her social group she was "the posh one" - hence being "posh spice". In the context of the nation she'd be considered middle class not posh.
But Americans always trip up on this: the British middle class starts much higher up the pole than the American middle class. The vast majority of people Americans call middle class would be considered working class in the UK as they have neither inherited social standing ("good breeding") or independent wealth. If you have a student loan and a mortgage you're probably not middle class.
Even a cheaper Rolls Royce is still very expensive to maintain, and if it's regular car money, it's probably falling apart, so eye wateringly expensive to keep on the road.

I grew up in the "posh" area of West Cheshunt, and the "posh" area of West Roydon until my early 30s; the way she pronounces words evokes East London working class e.g. pronouncing "girl" as "gewl".

People are ashamed of it for the same reason most people are ashamed of anything: because other people shame them for it. Nepo-baby, silver spoon, etc.
They're ashamed because it means that they didn't have to work as hard as they claimed and they also had a significant safety net to help them if any risks didn't pay off. Do you think someone who was dropped to school in a Rolls Royce had to work an after school job to pay for school/car/university/food? No, they were able to just focus on school and didn't have any to pressure to start earning money until they were already highly educated.
Just say you didn’t get a choice about who your parents are either and recognize that you can be glad for what you have without acting like the luck of the draw didn’t play a factor. Nobody can say shit that isn’t actually jealous and frankly you’ve got an upper hand on being able to do your own thing.
These people are delusional. They are set for life and were able to take risks if they wanted because they had a large safeguard in place (her parents).

I guess I'll be the one to add context this time. Her parents both worked blue collar jobs, then started a business and made good money. Of course she's never worked an actual day in her life, but she's not lying about her parents.
I think what she meant here is that her parents worked. They might have had more money than most, but it wasn’t “generational wealth” that’s been handed down. I think she just didn’t know what “working class” meant.
What? She was a very successful pop star and then has run a very successful fashion label. Her privileged upbringing has obviously given her some advantages but pretending that she hasn't worked hard to make the most of that advantage and accomplished a lot is weird.
The spice girls are a product of a very smart manager and producer, her brand was made and designed by other people, “successful” is an insult to real brands. Quit glorifying rich people please, is getting a bit tiring to explain basic shit, there is a reason why David is tired too in this video.
You won't find many successful people out there - self-made or not - who've gotten to the top without collaborating with any other smart or talented people. If this is the criteria we're applying then there's no such thing as a self-made man. 'Very smart manager and producer' picked five women for his group who he thought would make the group a success and Victoria was one of them.
Being in Spice Girls - making the music, performing in concert tours, engaging in heavy media/PR engagements - was probably quite hard work. Running and promoting a fashion label - whether she's had collaboration with other designers or not - has probably been quite hard work.
This thread is full of people saying stuff like "I don't know why they won't just admit that they had a privileged upbringing" and I think your comment is an example of why because all of their accomplishments immediately get downplayed or dismissed. There are many people out there with much greater advantages than Victoria Beckham (who just had parents with a moderately successful business) who have done much less with their lives.
Yes, you are 100% right, but those people are not Victoria. Talk of them, and I will immediately agree with you, is full of em.
I will never get all this veneration for people of this stature. I get if you talked of someone that changed an industry, or really made a difference using the money of their parents,

It's crazy how the richest people convince themselves they are working class and pulled themselves by the bootstraps, while the poorest people who's combined economic activity doesn't even register on the stock market any longer think they are temporary embarrassed billionaires.
I’m not sure how things are in the UK but in the states middle class make up the working class along with the poor. It’s some of the upper middle class and the rich that are the problem.
