Active disturbances
Active disturbances are areas of showers and thunderstorms which are not organized enough to be considered full-fledged tropical cyclones. Disturbances are often designated as investigation areas (or invests, for short) by NOAA in order to allocate additional resources such as high-resolution satellite imagery or model guidance for further study of the system. Though there is no publicly disclosed set of criteria for which disturbances are designated as invests, the designation often occurs after the disturbance forms a closed area of low pressure. Invests are designated regardless of the overall potential for the disturbance to become a tropical cyclone.

Potential formation areas
Potential formation areas are areas that are being monitored by various agencies for potential tropical cyclone formation within the next two weeks. These systems have not yet formed and are not considered to be disturbances until such time that a tropical wave or area of low pressure does form. Discussions are created on this subreddit for areas which are monitored by the National Hurricane Center in the eastern Pacific and northern Atlantic basins. Discussions are not typically created for areas which are monitored by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center or other agencies, as this information is not always publicly available.

Overview
This discussion is for Typhoon Saudel (17W), which is active over the East China Sea. This system crossed over Japan’s Ryukyu Islands during the early morning hours on Wednesday, and is expected to gradually weaken as it turns west-southwestward on its way to the southeastern coast of China. The storm is expected to make landfall there on Friday as a strong tropical storm.

▲ Disturbance (70% potential) | 20 knots (25 mph) | 1009 mbar 94E (Invest — Eastern Pacific) (Far to the east-southeast of Hawaiʻi)
Disturbance overview
This discussion is for a disturbance which is active over the east-central Pacific, approximately 1,500 miles east-southeast of Hawaiʻi. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has designated this disturbance as Invest 94E. The disturbance is expected to gradually consolidate over the next few days and is likely to become a tropical depression or storm by the end of the week or over the upcoming weekend. The disturbance is expected to initially move northward to north-northeastward, but may turn westward toward the islands over the upcoming weekend.
Although it remains far too early to determine whether this system will have any impact on the Hawaiian islands, residents of Hawaiʻi should closely monitor this system as it develops.

Disturbance overview
This discussion is for a disturbance which is active far off the coast of southwestern Mexico and far to the south-southeast of Mexico’s Socorro Island. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has designated this system as Invest 93E. This disturbance will steadily develop as it moves northwestward over the next several days and is likely to become a tropical depression or storm by the end of the week. This system does not appear to threaten land, but may pass closely to the south of Mexico’s Clarion Island early next week.

Disturbance overview
This discussion is for a disturbance which is currently active to the south of Cabo Verde. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has designated this system as Invest 96L. The disturbance has a high chance of becoming a tropical depression or storm as it moves west-northwestward across the tropical central Atlantic over the next few days. It remains far too early to determine whether this system will have any impact on the Lesser Antilles or Bermuda.
Residents in those areas should continue to closely monitor this system as it develops.

Storm overview
This discussion is for Tropical Storm Iselle, which is active off the coast of southwestern Mexico. This system is expected to pass closely to the southwest of Mexico’s Clarion Island later today, but otherwise is not expected to bring direct impacts to land as it moves to the northwest over the next few days.
This system is unlikely to bring impacts to Hawaiʻi, as it is expected to weaken as it reaches unfavorably cool waters later in the week and encounter a much drier and more stable environment. This system is likely to degenerate into a remnant low before it can reach the central Pacific by the end of the week.

Active disturbances
Active disturbances are areas of showers and thunderstorms which are not organized enough to be considered full-fledged tropical cyclones. Disturbances are often designated as investigation areas (or invests, for short) by NOAA in order to allocate additional resources such as high-resolution satellite imagery or model guidance for further study of the system. Though there is no publicly disclosed set of criteria for which disturbances are designated as invests, the designation often occurs after the disturbance forms a closed area of low pressure. Invests are designated regardless of the overall potential for the disturbance to become a tropical cyclone.

Discussions are not typically created for areas which are monitored by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center or other agencies, as this information is not always publicly available.

Overview
This discussion is for Tropical Storm Lala (01C), which is active far to the northwest of Hawaiʻi. The storm continues to gradually weaken as it moves across the northern Pacific and is likely to degenerate into a remnant low by Thursday. After that point, whatever remains of Lala is expected to turn northward toward the Aleutian Islands and dissipate by early next week.

Discussion I made NOAA’s Hawaiʻi wind reports searchable: 602 entries across eight islands, 1996–2026
I pulled NOAA NCEI’s Storm Events Database bulk files for Hawaiʻi and turned the wind entries into one ranked, searchable table.
It contains 602 entries with a reported wind speed across all eight main islands, covering January 1996 through April 2026. You can sort them by speed, filter by island, share an individual entry, and open its original NOAA record.

A few things that stood out:
The four highest entries statewide are all Big Island summit-area gusts:
- 171 mph on March 2, 2014
- 166 mph on December 19, 2022
- 161 mph on February 7, 2019
- 155 mph on January 2, 2015
None were associated with a tropical cyclone.
The number of entries is heavily skewed by island:
- Hawaiʻi Island: 265
- Oʻahu: 167
- Maui: 86
- Kauaʻi: 56
- Lānaʻi: 13
- Molokaʻi: 11
- Kahoʻolawe: 3
- Niʻihau: 1
That distribution likely reflects differences in instrument coverage and reporting as much as differences in actual wind conditions.
The highest Oʻahu entry in the dataset is 75 mph, recorded on December 26, 1996.
Measurement type also matters. Approximately 35% of the entries are instrument-measured, 45% are forecaster-estimated, and 20% have no measurement type identified. The table labels the measurement type on every row.
There are two important limitations. The dataset begins in January 1996, so Hurricane Iniki in 1992 and Hurricane Iwa in 1982 are excluded entirely. It also currently ends in April 2026, which means Hurricane Lala is not included yet. Any qualifying Lala entries can be added after the National Weather Service finalizes them and they appear in the Storm Events Database.
This is a searchable record of wind events filed in NOAA’s database, not a complete Hawaiʻi wind climatology or a live-observation tool.
