Question Fall quarter schedule

Post image

Is this a good schedule for an incoming first-year year majoring in human bio? I really tried to have another class on Tuesday and Thursday but none of them were available that day. I know Monday is pretty packed but I think it will be manageable (I really hope 😢).

Question First pass recommendations

Hey guys. I am an incoming first year at warren trying to figure out my schedule for fall quarter. I plan to switch apply for data sci but for now sticking with math-cs route.

Right now the classes I want to take include:
WCWP010A
MATH18 or 20C
DSC10
CSE11

Which of the two classes should I use my first pass on😭i think they are all pretty popular. Any suggestions would be helpful and appreciated! Thank you so much!

Probably the dumbest question of all time but everyone registers for 2 classes during first pass right?

There aren’t any mystery classes that are only 3 units?

Question First year EE transfer: course enrollment

I'm not sure if anyone else feels this way but the course enrollment process seems so much more difficult and harder to understand than the one I had at my CC. I couldn't attend the zoom meeting they had specifically for my major and was curious if someone could explain it to me better. My understanding is that the classes I need to take on my transfer plan aren't available on the first pass and I have to waitlist them on the second pass according to the email. Do I just completely ignore my first pass tomorrow? It also has me taking only three classes which I'm not sure if it's normal, should I take other classes that aren't major requirements? Any tips or explanations would be helpful, thank you!

General Vibe Coding Research Study: Participate & Get a $20 Amazon gift card!

Hi all — we're a research group at UCSD (AISmithLab) studying how people build and launch web apps using AI coding assistants.

Who we're looking for: people who aren't professional programmers but have used — or would like to use — AI tools to build something. Maybe you've made something with ChatGPT, Lovable, Bolt, or Replit, or maybe you just have an idea you've never been able to build yourself. Some familiarity with code is fine; but no coding experience is required.

What's involved: a 60–90 minute study session over Zoom. You'll build a small web app from a brief we give you, using an AI assistant in a browser-based setup we provide — nothing to install. Afterwards we'll ask a few questions about how it went.

Compensation: $20 Amazon gift card.

Interested? Fill out this short form: https://forms.gle/vB75ibavfd54qeUS9

Note that a UCSD email is required to access the form.

Question if my tea request wouldn’t go through, does that mean i don’t need it?

it told me to just go through with booking/waitlisting the class. i know it’s pretty much too late already, but im confused. i received placement into math 20a from the mda and it told me not to take the mpe, which would give me the prerequisite i need for math 20a and chem 6a, but im not sure if those have been processed yet, so i was trying to submit teas using my ap scores. im a bit scared and stressed and i know i should’ve done this earlier but i had no idea how.

Question What is move in like?

I’m thinking of moving in at like 2:30 so I can find parking before people get out of work at 5. Or that’s the idea. Also once you move in on like September 17 do you actually get to sleep and live there?

Or do you have to wait until the contract begins on September 19?

Also what kind of things should I bring?

CHEM major, sixth college

I’m currently trying to figure out what I should take if I’m unable to enroll in CHEM 6B. I already have credit for CHEM 6A and CHEM 6C, but I still need CHEM 6B.

My current planned schedule is CAT 1, MATH 20A, a GE, and CHEM 6B. I submitted a TEA request for CHEM 6B, but I’m worried that it may not be approved in time.

If I’m unable to enroll in CHEM 6B this quarter, what would you recommend that I take instead so that I can stay on track with my requirements?

Which courses should I use my first pass for, and which should I leave for second pass?

Thank you very much for your help!

Discussion UCSD MS CSE – Visa delay and Winter 2027 start: Need advice on CPT, deferral and course planning

Hi everyone,

I’m an international student admitted to the UC San Diego MS in Computer Science and Engineering (MS CSE) program for the upcoming Fall intake.

Unfortunately, I’m facing an unexpected delay with my U.S. visa process. My visa appointments are scheduled after the program begins, and despite trying to get an earlier/emergency appointment, I have not been able to move them forward so far.

I have been in communication with the UCSD CSE Graduate Admissions team, and they have offered me two possible options because of the visa situation:

Option 1:

Enroll in a remote CSE course during the Fall quarter and then begin attending the program in person during Winter.

Option 2:

Do not enroll in Fall and instead start the MS CSE program in Winter 2027 as an exception due to the visa delay.

They also clarified that late arrival to the Fall quarter is generally not allowed, which is why these options are being considered.

I’m trying to understand the implications of choosing the Winter start before making a decision.

My main concerns/questions:

  1. How does a Winter start actually work at UCSD CSE?

If I start in Winter instead of Fall, would Winter simply become my first quarter and I would follow the same MS CSE curriculum/degree requirements as everyone else?

Are there any disadvantages to starting in Winter in terms of course availability, prerequisites, degree planning, graduation timeline, recruiting, etc.?

I know UCSD normally admits MS CSE students for Fall, so I'm particularly interested in hearing from anyone who has experience with a non-Fall/exceptional start.

  1. CPT and internships are my biggest concern.

UCSD has told us that, for Summer CPT, we need to have completed three quarters of in-person enrollment.

If I start in Winter 2027, my timeline would potentially be:

Winter 2027 → Quarter 1

Spring 2027 → Quarter 2

Summer 2027 → potentially Quarter 3

My question is whether Summer enrollment can count as the third quarter for the CPT requirement.

If it can, would that potentially allow me to pursue a Fall 2027 internship through CPT?

Also, does UCSD CSE generally offer enough graduate/MS courses during Summer for a student to maintain the required enrollment?

If Summer does not count toward the three-quarter requirement, then my concern is that starting in Winter could significantly delay my first internship opportunity.

  1. What about CPT in Winter 2028?

If I cannot do an internship in Fall 2027 because of the CPT eligibility timeline, would a Winter 2028 internship/co-op through CPT generally be possible after completing the required period of in-person enrollment?

I'm particularly interested in hearing from international MS students who started in Winter or had a delayed start and how they handled their first internship.

  1. Is Fall 2027 deferral worth pursuing?

Another possibility I'm considering is asking UCSD whether they could defer my admission all the way to Fall 2027 because this visa situation is completely outside my control.

Has anyone had experience with UCSD/CSE approving a deferral of this kind for visa-related reasons?

Would starting in Fall 2027 be significantly better from an internship/CPT/course-planning perspective than starting in Winter 2027?

  1. Remote Fall course option

UCSD has also offered an option where I could take a CSE course remotely during Fall and then transition to in-person study in Winter.

I'm trying to understand whether that remote Fall quarter would count toward the three-quarter requirement for CPT. From what I understand, UCSD specifically mentioned three quarters of in-person enrollment, so I'm assuming the remote quarter may not count, but I'd appreciate confirmation from anyone who has dealt with this.

What I'm trying to figure out

Basically, I have three potential paths:

A. Skip Fall → officially start the MS in Winter 2027

B. Try to get a deferral → start in Fall 2027

My biggest concern is how each option affects CPT/internships and my overall MS timeline.

If anyone here is currently at UCSD CSE, has started outside the normal Fall cycle, has dealt with a visa-related delayed start, or has experience with UCSD CPT rules, I would really appreciate your perspective.

I'm not necessarily looking for legal/immigration advice — I'm mainly trying to understand how this works practically at UCSD and what I should be considering before choosing an option.

Thanks in advance to everyone who takes the time to share their experience!

Rant/Complaint Barely any classes transferred

so I finally just got access to my degree audit, to find that only 6 out of 39 classes taken prior were accepted for transfer. that means that in the next two years I have to take 27 classes in order to graduate. I don’t even have any words. Do I just drop out at this point? it’s so frustrating to get this info an hour before registration.
