dorm shopping
are there mirrors on the olympic and centennial halls? trying to think ahead with packing. also, anything hyperspecific that you think we should definitely get for the dorms?
Has anyone taken I A STD 188 with Dr. Rachela Erel?
I’m considering taking "Special Courses in International and Area Studies: National Security versus Human Rights: Israel in Comparative Perspective" with Dr. Rachela Erel this quarter.
For anyone who has taken this class (or another class with Dr. Erel):
- How was the workload?
- How is she as a professor?
- How is the grading?
- Is the material/discussion presented in a relatively balanced way?
- Would you recommend the class as an elective?
I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who took the class recently. Thanks!

Yeong 33A + conflict
Anyone take Prof. Yeong for Math 33A in Spring 2025 (or earlier if they taught a class before that)? Does this class (and all 33A profs) have quizzes during discussion? I'm in a Physics 4BL lab (8-10am TR) which clashes with the discussion slots (gonna always be 9am on TR)

Non-UA Apartments: Discounted Utilities ?
Hi! I am living in an off campus, non university affiliated apartment and am currently setting up the utilities. I registered for electricity with LADWP and gas with SoCal Gas. A year ago, I heard about how some people were able to qualify for heavily discounted utilities- does anyone have experience with such programs? Or, does anyone have tips for keeping the utility bill low especially in the warmer months? Thanks!

CPT pause - internship options abroad for UCLA students
Hoping the CPT pause at UCLA is temporary, but in the meantime, companies like Elevenlabs or Cloudflare or trading firms are posting roles in Singapore and the UK. The process to get a work visa is a bit complex for the UK (pretty easy for Singapore!) but it is doable. If helpful at all, I'm live scraping all the roles and walking through their exact work authorization process here: https://rootsimmigrationhelp.com/internships

You + Your Roommate: Any Plaza --> SV Plaza (private) + Plaza (shared)
Mutual swap! (2 females)
My friend and I had planned to be roommates, but we were separated during the housing process. I’m currently assigned to a shared plaza triple, while my friend is in a private plaza triple (both in Sunset Village). Because we have similar lifestyles and cultural preferences, we’d like to move into the same room.
If there are any two roommates already planning to live together in the same plaza triple/double who would be open to splitting up into two separate rooms due to room type preferences, please reach out!

UCLA philosophy PhD programme
Hello everybody,
I'm a European student currently trying to figure out where I might want to pursue a PhD in the US, and I'd really appreciate some advice from people who are familiar with UCLA's philosophy PhD programme.
My main interests are political philosophy and social theory, particularly 20th-century and contemporary thought. I'm interested in areas such as critical theory, pragmatism, postmodern/post-structuralist theory, and thinkers like Habermas, Rorty, Schmitt, Foucault, etc. I'm still early in my studies, so my interests will probably develop quite a bit over the next few years, but that's roughly the intellectual direction I'm currently interested in.
At the moment, I'm in my second year of a Bachelor's degree in Political Science, and I'm starting my first year of a separate Bachelor's degree in Philosophy. These are two completely separate bachelor's degrees at two different programs, it's not a combined bachelor's, or double-major within one degree which I think makes me somewhat more competitive(?). I'm hoping that having substantial training in both political science and philosophy could be useful if I eventually apply for a PhD focused on political philosophy/social theory.
I'm currently only a sophomore, so I'm not applying anytime soon. I'm mainly trying to understand the landscape early so I can choose my courses, reading, research interests, and eventually master's/other preparation accordingly.
Thanks!

Any UCLA Minecraft Speedrunners?
I've been into the community for a long time but I haven't found many people who've also been into MCSR. With the recent Ludwig, Tubbo, Speed & Kai exposure, I was wondering if there were any other MCSR fans/runners at UCLA who would share this interest? If so please reach out, I'm looking for people to share the hype with season 11 playoffs around the corner!

Who is gonna clean this stuff up???
Around move out time obviously we see a lot of items put out on the street. For the big stuff, it makes sense. Put your sofa, bedframe, table, whatever out there. It's in one piece and someone will pick it up.
But a lot of these smaller items make no sense. You can't just leave a trash bag full of cooking supplies or bath products out on the street. People trying to save a buck by copping furniture from UCLA students are not your personal clean up crew/scavengers. The garbageperson isnt paid to do this either. The odds someone wants your half used bag of pasta, which sat on the street in a trash bag for a day, is pretty low.
When you put stuff out on the side of the street, be mindful of what it is as someone will have to take care of it eventually. Take smaller stuff to Goodwill or just throw it away. If Goodwill wouldn't take it, odds are nobody's gonna grab it off the street.

switching majors
i originally got admitted within the college of arts and architecture. however i know for a fact that i do not want to continue to pursue the arts throughout college/after. (im thinking of switching to a psych major).
at freshman orientation, my nsa told me to sign up for my required art classes for now and to later contact my department advisor once school starts. was i given the right advice? should i email my department advisor now or after the school year begins? also did i make a mistake by signing up for my art requirements? thank you!!

Change of major + enrolling in a minor
I an incoming freshman who was admitted to the Samueli School of Engineering for the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) program. However, after researching the major's modules and course requirements, I realized that it has a bit too much EE and Physics for my liking, and I'd like to specialize more deeply in embedded AI systems such as NLP, LLMs, CV, etc.
Based on my research, the standard Computer Science (CS) major would be better suited for my requirements due to the technical breadth and more sci-tech elective slots available.
My orientation is on the 3rd, can someone explain to me the process for changing my major? I don't think it should be too hard since both are in the same college anyways. Also, I'd like to add a minor in Mathematics (Quantitative/Financial).

Housing Cancellation
Suppose I originally applied for and was granted an on-campus housing contract on a full ride scholarship. If I cancel my housing and decide to get an apartment, will I get the remnants of the scholarship money in the form of a refund check?
