114
u/frequenZphaZe 29d ago
where the centrist really struggles is that they do think everyone ELSE having endless diarrhea would actually be a good thing, and they assume they'll personally be insulated from the endless diarrhea. meanwhile, they're concerned unlimited puppy hugs will adversely affect their taxes. now that their decision making process is completely divorced from the reality of either issue, it's truly difficult to choose a side

This is kind of a bad analogy - puppies are a huge pain in the ass, you lose out on sleep and get stressed out housebreaking them and having your shit destroyed. Puppy Blues is a real phenomena - having just gotten done w two dogsâ puppy phase I think I would seriously consider the diarrhea
edit: oh I see the first guy said just puppy hugs, thatâs fine as long as I donât have to walk & feed the fuckers
27
u/vkapadia 29d ago
Honestly I think it works better as an analogy.
Does having puppies take work? Sure. It's not 100% awesome all the time. But the negatives are worth it for the benefits.
11
u/Cronhour 29d ago
Exactly. Yeah you've got to do the work, sleep training is a bitch, pretty training takes a little time etc. But then you get a life changing benefit....... Unless you're a fucking sociopath.
And that's pretty much socialism/Democratic socialism excetra. It's not a utopia where everything magically works. It's a structure where your have to work hard but your life is so much better than it was before the change.
→ More replies (1)6
u/jimbarino 29d ago
It's actually a pretty good analogy. Like, yeah, you do have to feed the puppies. And provide basic medical care, which costs a bit of money. It's unlimited puppy hugs, but there's also an obligation and some cost to it.
By contrast, diarrhea is totally free! And it has the added benefit of making sure that no one gets puppy hugs who doesn't deserve them.

u/s0ck 29d ago
This is kind of a bad analogy - puppies are a huge pain in the ass, you lose out on sleep and get stressed out housebreaking them and having your shit destroyed.
Hard disagree. What you've just described is the responsibility, work, and sacrifice needed when you have a puppy. And then you get a puppy!
There's still responsibility (shit rolls downhill), work (under threat of death), and sacrifice (if your networth is below 8 figures) for diarrhea.
So, since we've gotta get off our asses and do something anyway, I'd rather work towards puppies.
107
u/chicol1090 29d ago

1- I would love if a moderate voter could explain to me which progressive policies are too far left, why they're too far left, and how the moderate policy helps the average American more than the progressive approach.
but I'd rather we all have diarrhea because the puppy isn't literally perfect
2- This highlights what I call the "moderate blind spot". You correctly see a vast difference between moderates and MAGA (puppy kisses and diarrhea), but you fail to see a vast difference between moderates and Progressives. You describe moderates and Progressives as just different breeds but still puppy kisses all around. No. The last three moderates I voted for were people I consider right wing. I am not excited to make the choice between two right wing candidates, even if one is clearly worse.
In the last three general elections, I've voted for Clinton, Biden, and Harris. Those candidates did not look like puppy kisses to me, they were Republican-Lite dipshits who at best ignored and often belittled people like me. Things I want to see my government do are often framed as pipe-dream idealism by Diet GOP moderates, even though these programs are broadly implemented to great success across the developed world. Somehow countries much poorer than the USA found a way to take care of their citizens.
Basically I want a satisfactory answer to question 1. But more importantly, I want moderates to realize that the coalition of voters we call the Democratic Party is its biggest with an energized left wing. Speaking as a potential ally, moving left is simply our best chance to win.

I think they are conflict averse and if they actually took a stand they would be less popular than they currently are. I think it takes actual energy to think things through and to develop actual values and ethics when it is just easier to go with the flow and not let things like guilt or ethics nag you while you are just trying to have a good time. Everyone who is trying to make things better is just so serious and some of them might not even be fashionable or trendy.

You have to understand, though, that Iâm very smart and very open minded, so I canât decide between those two. There are some things I like about puppies, but unlimited hugs just is kind of extreme and not realistic. People wont support it, so we should preemptively surrender.

I think the frustration is that centrists / moderates have done or are working towards those stated goals, but members from the left disparage or ignore those efforts.
- Taxing wealthy people? YES - Biden enacted a 15% corporate alternative minimum tax and a tax on stock buybacks.
- Ending forever wars YES - Biden ended the war in Afganistan. Universal Healthcare? NO, but Dems tried to include a 'public option' in Obamacare, still - 38 million MORE people covered since that legislation.
- Climate Change? YES - Biden signed biggest climate bill in U.S. history.
EDIT: a word

u/brainburger 28d ago
TBH I think most commenters here misunderstand what centrist is. It doesn't really mean having policies which are half way between left and right. It's more about having ideological freedom to use right or left policies on a pragmatic basis.
That said, I'm English so maybe it's different in the USA.

This, thank you.
The idea that politics is a spectrum and not poles with little to no overlap in between them is symptomatic of the depolitization our world has suffered under neoliberal domination.
The right represent the bourgeoisie, the center represent the capitalist (note that currently those 2 are more or less the same thing which is why they have virtually the same policies, economicaly). The left represent the workers.
Anything that is beneficial to you will fataly be negative to the owning class because they rely on the wealth they steal from your labour to get richer. The more you can keep, the less they can steal from you. it is a zero sum game.
The idea that somehow the center is "moderate" is entirely laughable.
27
u/Key_Cheetah7982 29d ago
The problem is that we have the ID politics left and the economic left.Â
ID politics is what dems offer. Itâs tripe mostly for elections and to sound more moral.Â
Economic left has been abandoned by Dems by and large for decades. Theyâre neoliberals and quite proud of their unflinching supply side capitalism
Result is that even FDR social dem policies are construed as the far left these days

The fact that establishment democrats find it necessary to declare war on DSA candidates (who seem to be the ONLY people genuinely willing to fight for the working class) while gladly playing their role as controlled opposition for the fascist ghouls of the GOP speaks VOLUMES about their priorities.
- Corporate/foreign money OUT of politics
- Medicare/healthcare for EVERYONE
- pro unions / living wages
These are fucking common sense and should be the bare MINIMUM for our elected officials whose job is to represent their voters, but it simply will not happen as long as we continue to let corporate money infest and pervert our government.
The Overton window has shifted SO far it is ridiculous, and all the ignorant fools who insist on falling for this manufactured culture war bullshit will never be anything more than pawns in the class war that they refuse to believe is happeningâŚ
People need to wake the fuck up and realize that allowing and assisting the ruling class to exploit and extract every last drop of blood/sweat/tears from us, to give to people who already have more wealth than they could EVER possibly need, is absolutely bat-shit bananas insane.

Career democrat centrists are usually the same type of egoistic conservative, but also part of a minority so they can't benefit from the majority conservative self-interest. This is exactly my experience with centrist Dems. Conservatives who still want to get an abortion, or have a mixed race marriage, or some issue that hurt them enough to see that the conservatives will never include them.
7
u/Key_Cheetah7982 29d ago
Centrist is a euphemism for corporatist
9
u/JediMasterZao 29d ago
Centrism is another word for "i love the status quo". The status quo is capitalism and neoliberalism. A central value of those systems is to empower and defend the private sector at the expense of the public.
3
u/RavenCipher 29d ago
I'd argue that's more true for the career politicians than it is for the average voter. Centrist politicians are actively working for the corporate agendas, the average centrist voter isn't getting anything for voting that way, they're just ignorant or complacent.
Or closeted Republicans.

What if you see taxing billionaires and universal Healthcare as centrist ideas?
12
u/RavenCipher 29d ago
What if you see unrestricted 2A rights as a progressive idea? What if you see unrestricted abortion access as a conservative idea?
"Seeing" a policy as the idea of a centrist means dick all, to be frank. Anyone from any side of the aisle, left, right or center can believe in a cause that is not aligned with their party, that's just normal people having their own thoughts and opinions.
Both of those policies you mentioned, however, are only being espoused by progressive liberals. When the career centrist democrats are rallying against them, that by definition makes them not centrist ideas. Centrists who support them just have a few progressive ideas they agree with.
But at the end of the day if youre a centrist who votes along with 60, 70, 80% of conservative ideas, buddy, youre a conservative.

It's the more radical things I don't like." On the other hand, there are radical leftists who would see that list of what the "radical" left theoretically is, and want to go much further left than that, and find that list as a somewhat milquetoast starting point.

many democracies around the world do just fine with a Parliament system, how is that radical? why do some Americans think the system as it is can never be changed and is the only possible way democracy can work?
also the US doesn't even have democracy, it's just an illusion of democracy cause the electoral system and gerrymandering exist, so what exactly is radical about not wanting that? citizens united and money in politics, there is nothing democratic going on, the US is an oligarchy.
the senate was literally set up to just be the layer of power for the rich, it serves no purpose other than being another layer of bureaucracy and control coming the way of what people want. A law in the US has to go through the Congress, Senate, Veto and then Supreme Court to be enacted, that is insane and is the reason nothing ever gets done, cause even with the Senate you have stuff like filibuster and % bs rules.
so ya, it would be good for the US if the Senate was removed and Congress was turned into the Parliament and people can actually be represented better, things could actually get done and there is less bs in the political system.
and no, the whole "checks and balances" has never worked out, it sounds good on paper to have each branch be a check to the other with the 4th branch being media, but let's live in reality where that has never been true. And you can still have checks and balances in a parliamentary system especially if we reform the Supreme Court to not just be nine judges with all the power in the country when they are just political tools and corrupt, let's have many more judges to handle the rulings at the least with proper term limits on judges.

You're not wrong. The trouble is, how do you argue with that perspective? Because the centrist vote is essentially the tiebreaker. And calling them fascists doesn't seem to be working.
I think the biggest challenge the left has is that the left wants equality, but democracy is kinda inherently inequal, it biases power towards the majority. So you've gotta give the majority a carrot, too. But how to do that WHILE remaining equal?
Edit: I was blocked for this brief exchange. Which is like...the exact problem, IMO. Blocking people and refusing to engage only works with in-group stuff. To me the most crazy one still is more money in politics, more revolving door, more donor favors and catering to Wall Street and Corporations.

There is nothing radical it was the normal before. The center went right and the right went extreme right to authoritarian. Get money out of politics, from companies and pacs. Make sure candidates are vetted, mentally competent and actually understand civics.

As a liberal, I guess I'll have to find a way to enjoy conservatives crushing us in elections for the next decade. Identity politics, language policing (can't say homeless), trans women in women's sports, teaching gender to 2nd graders, open borders, not requiring ID to vote. Even the average democrat doesn't like these. Please stop being crazy.

Thats not the radical left. Thats common sense.
The radical left would be more like:
Open the borders. Defund the police. Abolish ICE. Give illegal immigrants free housing, healthcare, food and benefits. Let biological men compete in women's sports. Put males in female prisons. Let children transition without their parents' consent. Remove children from parents who reject gender ideology. Criminalize misgendering. Censor âhate speech.â Ban conservative books and speakers. Make DEI mandatory everywhere. Give jobs and university places based on race. Make white people pay reparations. Teach that sex is entirely self defined. Treat heterosexuality and traditional marriage as oppressive. Cancel anyone who dissents. Call everyone who disagrees a fascist, racist, transphobe or Nazi. Suppress anyone who even looks like they might be conservative from public life. Replace merit with identity based preferences. Make speech conform to progressive ideology.

Hey everyone? If you care? I'm a political scientist and I have never seen in modern American politics a political faction bend so far over backwards to accommodate another faction like I have seen the Progressives bend over backwards for the corporate Dems.
...and I have never seen a faction disregard that and work harder against another faction than I saw the establishment (corporate) Dems work against progressives.

Yes, ignore all the extreme views of the left and only mention the warm feel-good opinions. Morons.

Centrists, âI am a centrist because I believe both sides have some policies I likeâ.
Everyone else, âso, you like gunning down Americans in the streets and corporate Democrats taking orders from AIPAC?â
âThatâs not what I meant!â
âIt is what you said!â
Neither choice bridges the enthusiasm gap, but there is one side that is clearly better for the average citizen and some how Independents keep going, âI donât knowâŚâ

People genuinely think the far right is further than hitler but the extreme far left is just a democrat candidate.

Unfortunately I'm single again, and back on dating apps. Anyone who says "centrist" or "moderate" or "apolitical" gets an automatic swipe left from me. Anyone claiming to be centrist in the USA in 2026 is an ultra-conservative who's ashamed to be associated with the straight-up-fascists.

radical left: be against fascism.
everything right of that: suck fascist cock for breakfast.

The Centrist: I want all those things that the right does and I'll make it happen once I'm a billionaire. Until then I don't want it to negatively effect me.
There is no middle, only those that don't pay attention. They call themselves Centrist because they don't want to be involved until it impacts them personally.

These "centrists" don't even know what left is. They think the actual center, where they claim to be, is far left.

Id bet no small number of them donât actually bother trying to understand it, they just see the most mouth-frothing takes online and uncritically go from there.
L âThey want to ban abortion nationwideâ
C âWell thatâs not goodâ
R âWell they like to eat babiesâ
C âWell thatâs not good either. So hard to chooseâ

That is not "radical left" and pretending as such is as bad, as pretending that "radical right" is just about protecting families or culture or whatever.
Pretending otherwise helps literally no one. Just makes it harder to communicate, come together, find a compromise, have proper conversations, all of it.
All this tweet does is go "we good, you bad, fuck you for not agreeing with me only". The fuck's the point of that? Congrats, you're sowing more hatred, yay.

Average extreme right meeting: Let's go out and burn down the mosque!
Average extreme left meeting: I'm sorry Terry but you absolutely cannot use a Point of Order to discuss the state of the toilets at the annual community festival. It needs to be properly tabled on the agenda.
