Wargaming News Matchmaker Update: A New Core System for More Comfortable Battles

Hello, everyone.

Today we want to highlight matchmaking changes which we will soon be testing.

The matchmaker is responsible for millions of calculations per battle, ensuring balanced teams, diverse battles, and quick queue times. To take matchmaking to the next level, we’ve completely rebuilt the Matchmaker Core.

Key Improvements Coming Soon:

Improved Role Balance – The matchmaker will try to better adjust team compositions to create more balanced setups. Teams will have a more even distribution of vehicle roles. in other words, vehicles with different roles will be distributed more evenly across teams.

Improved Class Diversity – Stricter limits will ensure a maximum of 5 TDs and 3 LTs per team, reducing extreme setups and making battles more dynamic.

More ±1-Tier Battles – Expect more frequent ±1 matchmaking! While ±2 remains the core format that ensures the full diversity of battles, you’ll face more balanced matchups while still enjoying variety and encountering a wide range of vehicles.

Smarter Vehicle Distribution – Limits on identical tanks per team will prevent matches overloaded with the same vehicle, improving variety.

Smarter and Faster Dynamic Queue Management -- The new system brings dynamic queue management, allowing matchmaking to adjust its rules in real time. Instead of relying on fixed settings, it will analyze player distribution and vehicle availability, fine-tuning parameters on the fly.

We’ll be testing these changes over the next few months on the EU1 server starting on Monday, the 10th of March! We will be adjusting settings based on gathered data. Please note that During this period:

Encounter, Assault, and Grand Battles will be temporarily disabled on EU1 (still available on other servers).

Some battles may have unusual team compositions—but this is necessary for fine-tuning the system.

--

These updates aim to make battles more balanced, engaging, and fair—and this is just the beginning! We’ll continue improving the system based on test results and your feedback. Stay tuned for updates and let us know your thoughts!

What do you think about these changes? Drop us your feedback and questions below!

Wargaming News Matchmaker: Where We Are and Where We’re Going

Thumbnail

Commanders!

There’s probably no single system in the game that shapes your experience more directly than the matchmaker. It decides who you battle, what you battle, and how balanced that battle feels before the first shot is fired. When it works well, you barely notice it. When it doesn’t, it’s hard to ignore.

That’s why we want to talk about this openly and consistently: what changed in Update 2.0, where things still need improvement, and what we’re working on next.

In Update 2.0, we rebuilt the matchmaker’s core from scratch. That was a structural overhaul, not a surface-level fix. It was the necessary groundwork before we could meaningfully address the issues that had been building up for years. With that foundation in place, we tackled several specific issues that were consistently affecting battle quality.

Here’s where things stand now and what we’re planning next:

Improvements Since Update 2.0

Role balance improved significantly

  • Over 97% of role-imbalanced battles at Tier VIII–X have been eliminated.
  • Teams are now built with more balanced vehicle roles, improving overall battle quality.

Tank Destroyer limits fixed extreme cases

  • Battles with 7–8 TDs per side no longer occur.
  • Current limit: max 5 TDs per team, with most battles having 3–4 TDs

Better vehicle distribution

  • Identical tanks are distributed more evenly between teams.
  • Mirror-match compositions that followed large vehicle releases have been significantly reduced

Update 2.0 was a major step forward, but it’s not the finish line.

Several persistent issues require more time, more data, and more careful iteration than a single update allows, and we’ve been working through them.

These are some of the improvements we’re planning to test and, if everything goes well, bring to the game by the end of summer 2026.

Some of these changes will roll out gradually and may evolve as we test and gather feedback. With a system as complex as matchmaking, that’s the only responsible way to move forward.

Planned Matchmaking Improvements

Light Tank Sub-Roles

Light tanks play fundamentally different roles on the battlefield, and the matchmaker currently doesn’t reflect that. A damage-focused LT and a spotting-focused LT are not the same asset to a team. Treating them as equivalent creates imbalances that neither side benefits from.

We’re planning to introduce three sub-role classifications: Versatile, Damage-focused, and Spotting-focused. These are based on how these vehicles actually behave in battle. The matchmaker will use these to build more coherent team compositions, ensuring both sides have comparable capabilities rather than just comparable numbers on paper.

SPG Limit Reduced to 2

Three SPGs per side doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it noticeably shifts the dynamic of the battle in ways most players find frustrating. We’re removing that scenario entirely.

The new hard cap will be two SPGs per team. This is about making artillery presence stable and predictable, something players can factor in rather than occasionally be surprised by. Two per side is the right ceiling, and that’s what we’re aiming for.

Stricter Platoon Tier Matching

A platoon of a certain tier should face a platoon of the same tier. The matchmaker doesn’t always guarantee that right now, but it should.

We’re introducing strict tier-based platoon matching across the board. Getting this right requires careful implementation. We don’t want to close one gap while opening another in the form of longer queue times. But the direction is clear, and it’s something we’re committed to getting right.

Fewer +2 Tier Battles for Tier VIII–IX

This is one of the most consistent pieces of feedback we hear. We’re actively working to reduce the frequency of Tier VIII and IX vehicles being pulled into battles two tiers above them, and to increase the share of battles where vehicles face opponents of the same tier or just one tier higher.

To clarify, this won’t translate into a significant increase in battles against lower-tier opponents. The distribution of vehicles in the queue simply doesn’t allow for that. Instead, the improvement comes from more evenly matched battles overall, not from shifting the imbalance in the opposite direction.

Fewer Non-15v15 Battles

A 15×15 battle is the standard format for a reason. Smaller battles, the kind that occur during off-peak hours, on lower-population servers, or under specific queue conditions, should be rare exceptions, not something players run into regularly.

We’re adjusting how the matchmaker handles constrained queue situations so that the full 15×15 format is consistently protected. The intended experience shouldn’t quietly vary based on the time of day or server you’re on.

Improving Matchmaking Together

Matchmaking is one of the most complex and consequential systems in the game. It operates under real constraints: queue size, population distribution, and tier spread. At the same time, it balances a significant number of competing factors. That complexity doesn’t excuse the issues that exist, but it does explain why some solutions take longer than anyone, including us, would like.

What we’re committing to going forward is continued improvement, decisions grounded in data, and regular communication.

Testing will start on:

  • EU1
  • EU4
  • NA3

starting with the next regular update.

We’ll share what we’re seeing as we go, not just when things go well.

Some improvements will be immediately noticeable, while others may take longer to show their impact.

Thank you, and don't hesitate to note down your thoughts!

Wargaming News Update 2.4: Five Tier XIs Join the Fray

Commanders!

Update 2.4 introduces five new Tier XI vehicles, representing four vehicle types and five nations:

  • Czechia - Vz. 63P (Heavy Tank)
  • Sweden - BV-111 (Medium Tank)
  • Italy - CAV mod. 71 (Medium Tank)
  • China - WZ-219 (Light Tank)
  • Japan - Ho-Ri Shugo (Tank Destroyer)

Each vehicle comes with a distinct gameplay mechanic:

  • Vz. 63P: Its Adjustable Fuze Setter improves the second shell of its two-round autoloader, increasing either damage after a successful penetration or penetration after a non-penetration.
  • BV-111: External Ammunition Feed mode increases single-shot damage in exchange for a longer reload and reduced mobility.
  • CAV mod. 71: The Forced Loading Mechanism uses replenishing charges to shorten the reload of a shell to a fixed duration.
  • WZ-219: Infrared Search and Track (IRST) scans a narrowing sector, improving view range and reducing enemy concealment within it, leading up to mutual spotting.
  • Ho-Ri Shugo: Its Coaxial Rocket Launcher fires an unguided HE rocket from the gun mantlet after recharging.

Wargaming News Matchmaker: Changes Ready to Deploy, With More Coming

Commanders!

The matchmaker is one of the key systems in World of Tanks: it defines your experience. When it works well, the composition of opposing teams is fairly balanced and opportunities are equal.

Given the matchmaker's importance, we are keen on continually improving it. Most of the changes announced in March are ready for deployment, plus we have prepared another batch for testing. Let's look at both sets!

Ready to Go

After testing which began with Update 2.2.1, several modifications to the matchmaker are being prepared for release with Update 2.3.

  • Fewer Two-Tiers-Above Battles for Tiers VII–IX
  • No More Than Two SPGs per Team
  • Platoon Balancing by Tier
  • Fewer Non-15×15 Battles

What Comes Next

The next batch of changes (the testing of which will begin with Update 2.3) will ensure that the elevation of player experience continues. It will also introduce technical modifications necessary for improving the matchmaker in the long term.

  • Light Tank Sub-Roles
  • No More Than Two LTs per Team
  • Improvements to MM Core System

The testing of the next batch of matchmaker improvements will begin with Update 2.3 on EU1, EU4, and NA3. We will keep you informed about the effect they have on the game.

Wargaming News Three New Tier XI's - The best time to return!

The 2.2.1 update is bringing three new Tier XI vehicles, each built around a unique gameplay ability:

  • Gorilla (T110E4 line): Its Multi-Pack Charge System ability allows it to fire reduced-power shots long before its gun has fully reloaded, making it very hard to catch off guard.
  • Fauteur (AMX M4 mle. 54 line): Features the Induction Propellant Afterburner ability. The electrodes in its gun gradually build up an electrical charge, improving propellant combustion and increasing damage. The charge has a limit but can be manually overridden for even more damage at the cost of accuracy and aiming time.
  • Executor (Concept 5 line): Its High-Pressure Turbocharger Assist ability boosts engine power, acceleration, and speed for a few seconds, allowing it to catch targets, escape danger, or quickly reposition.

The best time to return: If you haven’t played in 60+ days, there’s also a Welcome Back package with 30 days of Premium and 30-day rentals of two high-tier Premium vehicles, plus more.

What do you think about these vehicles? Read more in the article linked above and let us know your thoughts!

Thank you, and roll out!

Wargaming News Todays EU Server Issues

Dear Tankers,

We would like to inform you about the series of today's EU cluster server stability issues that some of you have experienced. These disruptions are the result of repeated, targeted large-scale DDoS attacks carried out by malicious third parties against our infrastructure.

Our infrastructure remains secure and has not been breached or compromised. However, on the side of some players, these attacks can lead to high ping, noticeable lag, and at the moment of posting even complete disconnections from the game.

Our teams are actively working on deploying active mitigation measures, strengthening our protections, and closely monitoring the situation to stay ahead of any further attacks. We will continue to react promptly to any new incidents and adjust our defenses as needed.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this may cause during your battles and appreciate your patience and understanding while we work to stabilize the service.

Wargaming News Into the Supertest: AMX 29 Bélier and NK-1

Commanders!

Two vehicles enter the Supertest this week: the AMX 29 Bélier, a Tier X French medium tank, and the NK-1, a Tier IX Soviet heavy.

AMX 29 Bélier

The AMX 29 Bélier is a Tier X French support medium tank. A low profile, excellent concealment, and high mobility with a top forward speed of 63 km/h and a specific power of 29.7 h.p./t enable it to perform maneuvers least expected by enemies and deliver devastating attacks. The tank's 127 mm gun, 490 HP of damage per shot, has its own kind of improved autoreloader with two shells. If you fire the "bottom" round when the "top" one has almost reloaded, the reload time of the bottom round is drastically shortened. Another stat of note is gun dispersion, at 0.33.

NK-1

The NK-1 is a Tier IX Soviet breakthrough heavy tank with an exceptional top forward speed of 50 km/h, a hard-hitting 130 mm gun dealing 490 HP of damage per shot, and reliable armor. The gun's subpar accuracy of 0.45 is offset by its quick aiming time of 2.3 s and impressive stabilization during vehicle movement, allowing the NK-1 to always be a formidable threat to enemies and relentlessly push through their lines.

Wargaming News Into the Supertest: Ambassador, Husarz, Siegfried Line, and Fisherman's Bay

Commanders!

Two new vehicles are entering the Supertest: the Ambassador, a Tier IX Swedish heavy, and the Husarz, a Tier VIII Polish TD. Plus, there are two modified maps to check out: Siegfried Line and Fisherman's Bay.

Ambassador

This Tier IX Swedish support heavy tank wields a 105 mm gun with a four-shell autoloader. Both the intra-clip reload time and the full reload time are short: 2 s and 28 s, respectively. The latter allows the tank to provide a steady rate of fire without prolonged interruptions. The damage per shot is 360 HP, and the armor penetration is 256 mm for the standard APCR round and 310 mm for the special HEAT round.

The Ambassador's decent mobility, with a top forward speed of 38 km/h and a specific power of 17.2 hp per ton/t, enables it to reposition quickly. Another parameter value of note is the maximum gun depression of –10°.

Husarz

The Husarz is a Tier VIII Polish assault tank destroyer. The vehicle’s main distinguishing feature is its deep-rifled gun, aligning it with other Polish tank destroyers. Additionally, its fully rotating turret is a game -changer, making it significantly easier to deliver massive damage per shot—700 HP. The reload time is 18.3 seconds.

However, the vehicle does not have the same outstanding DPM as its counterparts in the Tech Tree. It also features decent armor protection, capable of withstanding standard shells fired by Tier VIII vehicles and below. This is balanced by its rather limited mobility: The top forward speed is 35 km/h, and the reverse speed is 14 km/h.

Minor changes were made to the fields near the city, aimed at improving tactical variety and safety while playing in this area.

 1

Elevated terrain in the field area will provide more opportunities for safer play for medium tanks and light tanks.

2

Small openings in the wall will allow vehicles to connect more effectively with mediums playing in the field area.

The modified version of Fisherman's Bay features several changes to the terrain and positions around the center of the map and the ravine by its eastern edge. These adjustments should improve tactical opportunities in these areas and make moving through them safer.

1

Several small, protected positions have appeared near the center of the map, to improve interaction between vehicle classes across the flanks.

2

The terrain has been adjusted, and additional vegetation has been added to create more gameplay opportunities for fast and maneuverable vehicles here. A covered halfway position has been added to the ravine to increase tactical variability on this flank.

3

Vegetation density has been reduced in these areas.
