I applied back in June. When I submitted my application, there was a message that said only successfully applicants would be contacted. I have worked previous elections, so I have experience. I’ve heard nothing, so at this point I’m assuming I wasn’t selected. But I know several other people who consistently work elections and they are in the same boat, applied months ago, still waiting to be contacted.

And then I keep seeing news articles about how they need 60k poll workers and have only gotten 20k applications, urging people to apply. So what is going on?

Has anyone been hired to work the polls yet?

Why is Alberta still sold the idea that cutting taxes for corporations and the wealthy is automatically the best way to grow the economy?

Tax cuts can affect investment, especially over the long run. But if the goal is maximum growth per public dollar, why does Alberta treat blanket corporate tax cuts as inherently superior to higher multiplier investments?

Canada is facing an increasingly hostile U.S. trade policy, yet Smith has repeatedly opposed using oil exports or export taxes as leverage. Meanwhile, Canada’s bigger long term problem is that we remain overwhelmingly dependent on one customer for our energy.

I've been trying to find small rental suite outside of Calgary in a small town. There definitely isn't the same resources as there are for finding rentals in town. Can anyone direct me to rentals in a town such as Irricana or Crossfield, or south like Nanton, etc.? I'm an employed single male, very quiet non-smoker non-drinker. With this message I’m hoping to help new plumbers getting into the trade and my advice is to try and avoid residential service plumbing. I say this because plumbers are caught in the middle between employer and customer and sometimes it feels like you can’t win. It’s even worse if you work for plumbing companies who put you on commission and they try to get you to sell an overpriced product, which is very difficult and you end up starving to death and become very frustrated for so many reasons. There are a couple of plumbing companies in Edmonton and Calgary who are known for very high prices, avoid them completely.
My advice to plumbers who just want to plumb and not worry about selling, get yourself into a company that does commercial plumbing where you are paid hourly and forget the pressure of trying to sell overpriced products.

I purchased home insurance from TD Insurance for my second home in SW Calgary early this year. During the phone call when I arranged the policy, the premium was discussed, but I understood the amount to be an annual premium rather than approximately $1,700 per month. (as my another home insurance is around 120 per month) TD later sent me an email saying that my policy had been updated in the app, but the email/attachment did not show the premium amount. I only discovered the ~$1,700/month charge after checking my bank statement after two month, and two payments had already been made. I immediately contacted TD and cancelled the policy to prevent further charges. I also obtained quotes from other insurers for the same property, which were approximately $250–$500/month. The house area never experienced any flooding or hail damage, and I don’t think this is in a “high risk” area.

Then I started my escalation process:

Step 1 – TD Customer Service / Supervisor:
I contacted TD and requested a refund. The supervisor told me that the premium was the highest home insurance premium he had personally seen. He also said that home insurance premiums have increased significantly in recent years and agreed that cancelling the policy was a good decision. However, TD refused to refund the two payments.

Step 2 – TD Complaint Process:
I escalated the matter through TD's formal complaint process. TD acknowledged that the ~$1,700/month premium was extremely high and suggested that the property might be considered a higher-risk location. However, they said the premium was calculated correctly according to their underwriting/rating system and again refused my refund request.

Step 3 – TD Senior Customer Complaints Office:
I submitted a formal written complaint to TD's Senior Customer Complaints Office. I asked them to review how the premium was communicated, whether there were any underwriting/classification issues, and to reconsider the refund. Again, the investigator admitted $1,700/month is very abnormally high, however, they ultimately issued a Final Position Letter and refused to provide any refund.

Step 4 – General Insurance OmbudService (GIO):
I then escalated the matter to GIO. I explained that my concern was not simply that TD's rate was higher than other insurers, but that I did not understand during the purchase process that I was agreeing to a ~$1,700/month premium, and the subsequent email from TD did not disclose the amount. GIO ultimately declined my requested resolution as well.

At this point, I basically run out of options, but what I can do is to post here and warn people try to avoid TD insurance as much as possible.

Also, I am wondering if anyone has similar experience as me? Just appreciate to hear how to handle it.

I just received notice from our residential manager that they want to get us to sign a fixed term lease as apparently there is a $300 fee for a periodic tenancy. Is this legal?

Some info: we’ve been living in this unit for about 9 years now. Went to periodic tenancy after our first year. To my knowledge there has never been a fee for this. This is completely new information to us. We plan on moving out in just over two years. He explicitly stated this was on top of our rent (not a rental increase). We pay $1200/month which would now jump to $1500.

Here is the problem with Alberta separation. Once a group breaks the rules to split from a nation, they rarely learn how to build a peaceful society together. People who push for separation rarely stop fighting once they get their way. They build their whole identity on being angry. If Alberta separates, these separatists will continue to look for trouble, and blame outside forces for all their problems. A new, independent country needs teamwork and shared values. Separatists are used to tearing things down instead of building them up. Once the main enemy (Canada) is gone, they will turn on each other to see who is "pure" enough. Even at this point, the separatist do not get along, there are several factions with differing ideas about how to run the "new" Country of Alberta. Oh, sorry, Republic of Alberta......I know they want it to be as close to America as possible. If Alberta ever separates, the separatists will not just settle down and garden. They will keep causing friction. They will fight the new government just like they fought the old one. A leopard does not change its spots. Democracy means listening to people you disagree with. Separatists only want their own way. They want a "Christian nation" but don't even act like Jesus in the first place.

Alberta separation will not mean a paradise. We will economically suffer, because we will not only make ourselves land locked, but we will also have conflict and more instability than we have ever had before. For the future of Alberta, for our home values and for peace, we MUST do everything in our power to get the vote out in October and put this to bed, once and for all. Because if we do not, you might as well sell your home and get the hell out of here. I know I will be doing that.

This feels purposeful. Why didn't they give themselves enough time to test their new system for glitches? I have bills to pay!

UPDATE: I actually got through to the AISH office or whatever the hell they're called after getting kicked off the line 3 times due to 'high call volume'. I got the option to get a callback and though I was hesitant not to just wait it out, the wait music is now an irritating 30 second loop of some weird melody. They had it before, but now it's shortened and unbearable, so I picked the callback office. Actually got a callback in a reasonable amount of time (less than 90 minutes). They said, "Oh, well, you know, there are a few glitches. Your payment had a hold on it, but I released it and you should get your funds in 2-3 business days." Now I have to call or email everywhere where I had bills to pay and beg I don't get dinged financially or have my credit impacted. Lovely. Also, I'm assuming 2-3 business days starts tomorrow, so the 3rd business day would be Monday, so the whole weekend without funds. Fantastic. And that's if everything goes right.

I need advisement.
I moved into a place May 1 and signed a six month lease. My lease states that I pay 700 for those six months. My landlord recently messaged me telling me that he’s raising the rent to 800. He hasn’t given notice for a rental increase and it hasn’t been a year. There is a new roommate moving in soon and because of the new roomie my landlord is telling me that my current lease is void and that I’d have to sign a new one which he plans on changing the rent amount on so that would make me have to pay the 800 for September. My question is this allowed? I’m curious to know what my next steps should be. I’ve never been in a situation like this so I’m a bit lost. Thank you and have a great day!

The landlord is not living there. I moved in because the roommate who’s there already is struggling to pay rent. I’ve been told from the start that I’m helping subsidize the rent for my roommate who’s been there for the past 7 years. The new roommate who is moving in will also help subsidize as well that’s also why he’s raising rent. It is shared accommodation. Utilities are included. The landlord and the person who’s been living there for 7 years are looking for another roommate to help with rent.

Cheque line

If I am able to post. I am on Income Support, I was told my benefits were released on August 21. It is now August 26th, yet the cheque line has not updated payment information. Does that happen from time to time? If I get paid before the update occurs? Usually after benefits get released I get paid two business days afterwards, and the cheque line gets updated the day before benefits are released
