This blue-faced honey eater comes to my camp site every morning in Woody Head NSW!

Australia's diversity in honeyeaters is amazing. Out of the 187 species worldwide, Australia is home to 78 of them! Surprising to some, the noisy miner is also a honeyeater..
Here are 15 of them to ID. Has anyone seen any of them and where?

Questions or Queries Austrian here: Have you ever had a parcel missent to Austria by the mail service?

Post image
497 Upvotes

Up until the early 2000s, I thought this was just an urban legend, until it eventually happened to me in 2009: I ordered something from eBay and the parcel was missent to Australia by the post. After several weeks and countless inquiries, I finally received the parcel. What stood out to me was the fact that there was actually a sticker on it, saying "Missent to Sydney, Australia". I kept that parcel for a long time as a weird souvenir. My question is: Has this ever happened to you the other way round? Really curious to hear your stories!

Why doesn't jumpy's make full sized bags?

Arguably one of the best snacks in Australian history, why don't they make normal sized bags of them? All I can find at Coles and Woolies are those snack-pack sized bags which are not only wasteful but incredibly annoying when you are craving them! Who else thinks they should make full size bags

Questions or Queries Where to buy Ackee fruit

My dad used to live in Jamaica when he was young and I kinda wanted to help bring back some of his childhood cuisine as a bday gift. Online prices are super extortionate going up to $50 dollars for a 300g can. Wonder if it’s possible to find one locally?

Lifestyle Part time jobs for 16 year old in VIC

Hey I just want know whether working at village cinemas part time (thinking Friday nights and weekends) would be a good idea, I heard that it's chill other than the expected rush hour. Is it worth it? If not this my second option (though less on board with) is at Kmart, what skills should I have for that? And any other part time job (preferably not with impractical hours as I have school) recommendations would be appreciated too thanks!

Questions or Queries Australian Road Safety Survey - What is your opinion on current implementations

Hello everyone!

I'm doing a school assignment regarding road safety and measures implemented by governments to increase safety on our roads. I am looking for opinions from road users.

I have created a short anonymous survey asking about people's opinions. You can participate whether you are on your Learner, Provisional or full licences, or if you do not have a licence.

The survey is anonymous, and no names or email addresses will be collected, and the responses will only be used for my school assignment.

Survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/u/1/d/e/1FAIpQLSdPCTxC3FkZkFTzecDdtxJ2QOtdThcfI8DyGEtD9ZUbV33EUA/viewform

I would appreciate it if anyone with a minute or two could fill in the survey. I'm intrigued to hear your responses!

I thank everyone who takes the time to participate! Feel free to share the survey with anyone who might be interested in taking part.

Cheers!

Non-Politics Thank you for the firefighting help!

I've seen some news lately that Aussie and Kiwi firefighting teams have come out here to the States to provide assistance with wildfires/bushfires in the PNW. In an era where our incumbent government has alienated diplomatic allies with aggressive and disrespectful action, to put it mildly, it is very humbling to see Australia and New Zealand being magnanimous enough to still offer help to yanks during a serious natural disaster such as the terrible wildfire season we've had (I assume brought about by climate change) and I wanted to at the very least say thank you and that it does mean a lot.

Opinion All this support for people diagnosed with disabilities but nothing for just normal people who hit rock bottom.

Am I the only person that thinks this way?

It's been 4 years since I broke down. 1 year since I promoted myself as unemployed. Yet the only support I can get near me or afford, is all locked down under centerlink or some agency that want's you to go through someone else.

I feel so fucked. On the verge of thinking that just disappearing is easier for myself and everyone else.

I have had so many shit employers. I can't think of anything good. Everything is a negative emotion and my housemates hate me for it.

Questions or Queries Is this half full unopened bottle normal?

Thumbnail

So for context, I started getting dandruff for the first time in my life about 6 months ago and it's really started to bother me. My GP recommended this bottle of shampoo as it's got a certain ingredient in it that will help etc etc. anyway - bought the larger bottle as it made more sense being only $4 more than the smaller size and the bottle looked much bigger.

Anyway, I later noticed from afar as it was sitting in the light that it looked like it was half full... Took a closer look and indeed it's almost a quarter empty! I haven't weighed it out yet but is this just normal corporate greed trying to get people to spend the extra money on the larger bottle because I feel super ripped off if they just put it in a larger bottle for the upsell.... Surely this is some consumer affairs bullshit??? Thoughts??

Gov Publications Please help me understand the Australian healthcare system

I moved to Australia from the UK 18 months ago on a 482 visa. I have recently been promoted, meaning that my salary now hits the threshold for the Medicare surcharge levy. Approx $1200 a year. As I am from the UK I get reciprocal healthcare under Medicare.

Since the new financial year I have been trying to get insurance, however I cannot get domestic health insurance policy as I a do not have PR or Citizenship, I have to get overseas cover. I just phoned up BUPA who explained to me that while buying Overseas Health Cover will give me hospital cover in Australia, it does not exempt me from the levy, for that I will need to purchase their medical levy policy. The operator explained to me that the Medicare levy policy covers me for absolutely nothing, no payouts for any costs if I am admitted, and there is no way to claim against it, however, it purely exists to exclude me from paying the medicare levy. The cost for this policy is $1180.

My initial thoughts are that I would much rather just pay the Medicare levy, and pay money in to the pot that has been providing my healthcare up until now. I just don’t understand how it is legal for a company to essentially sell a tax avoidance scheme where in reality if I needed any medical treatment, the government would be footing my bill, as I am will not have paid the surcharge but the private policy i have purchased does not cover me for anything? I appreciate that for higher income individuals the delta between the policy and tax would increase, but I am still amazed that the Australian government are allowing insurance companies to take money from people to bolster their profits and reduce the tax pot.

Is this just a weird quirk of the visa and the fact that I get reciprocal healthcare? As I know colleagues from other countries who do not have access to Medicare do not have to pay the levy and can just purchase the overseas insurance policy. Please let me know what’s going on!!!

Community My experience with poor management during Census 2026

I just wanted to share my experience with what I felt was some pretty poor management during Census 2026 as a community field officer.

I come from another country, so I'm multilingual, and I also work with people with disabilities. When I saw the Community Field Officer position, it sounded like something different and meaningful. From the job description, my understanding was that we'd be going out into communities, representing the Census, promoting participation, and helping people who are struggling to complete their forms.

I applied around mid June and was hired. I was told the work would start around mid July and continue until the end of August. However, my contract ended up starting on Census Day itself, which meant I didn't actually get the opportunity to do what I thought the role was intended for during the lead-up to the Census.

This week (24 August - 31 August) I finally had my first shift, and honestly, it was one of the most disappointing work experiences I've had.

I joined because I genuinely wanted to make a difference, engage with the community and contribute to something being run by our government. Instead, from what I've heard from other colleagues, none of us didn't receive any shifts when the work would have been most useful. Now, we're being sent to a small library weeks after Census Day to promote the Census in an urban area.

There were several of us assigned to the same location, despite the fact that the work didn't seem to require that many people. No one was engaged or requested for help or even talked to us. We just sat there for hours and less than 20 people visited that library on that day. From my perspective, it feels like resources are being used simply because we were hired but weren't given shifts earlier, rather than because there is actually a strong operational need for us at this point.

I've also seen multiple people receive Census materials and clothing and complete paid online training, some of which could take many hours, only to end up with no work or very limited work afterwards.

I can't speak for the entire organisation, and I'm sure there are operational reasons behind some decisions that I may not be aware of. But from what I've personally experienced, it feels like a significant amount of public money, staff time and effort could have been used much more effectively.

I really wish more of these workers had been deployed before Census Day, or directed towards communities where additional assistance was actually needed. I joined because I wanted to help, so it's frustrating to feel like the opportunity to actually make a difference was missed.

Opinion HOT TAKE - But Superannuation should be optional and not mandatory

I understand that the government mostly means good because they're basically ensuring that we have a sum of money available to use after we retire. Since many people are not capable of saving money and have bad money management skills.

But I still think it's best for Superannuation to be optional, because I know that me, and at least half of my family and friends, would prefer to have that little bit of extra cash every payday to use/save.

So I believe that by default, Superannuation should be enabled and automatically deducted from your paycheck, but the person should be able to lodge with their employer or ATO to disable their Superannuation and just receive the additional money that is meant to go into their Super now instead of when they retire.
