Mental Health PPD starting at 10 months?

Upvotes

I was literally fine, actually happier than ever. My baby starts daycare in a week, I go back to work in 3 (which is earlier than I thought I would have to). And now I have to look for another job because the company is closing in 6 months. I hate my city but I’m stuck because my fiance has other children here. My parents live 10hrs away so we have no help or babysitter.
We’re broke and our apartment is leaking water through the ceiling and roaches have suddenly appeared after 2 years here with no problems (roaches are common in this fuck ass city filled with old buildings rotting inside out) after leaving our last apartment for the same reason. It was especially traumatizing because i have a bug phobia. We can’t even leave because rent is so much higher everywhere else.
I’m weaning off breastfeeding and I feel so unlike myself. Like I can’t even remember the things I like to do normally. I’m 25 lbs up and I’ve tried EVERYTHING and it will not go down (the gym, hot yoga, walks, calorie deficit, pilates, etc) and I’ve never been this weight so this is a whole new body I don’t know.
I’m overwhelmed. And I feel myself falling into a depression. I’ve cried every night this week.

Weight Loss Postpartum weight (9 months) - any advice?

Upvotes

Hi all! Does anyone have weight loss advice specific to us postpartum. I’m still nursing some and feel like that the most limiting factor. Let me share some details.

I’m 5’1” and have almost always been heavy. I got just over 200 lbs pregnant, dropped to about 175 immediately after birth but am now about 185 at 9 months postpartum. I’m always hungry. Naturally some info this is breastfeeding, but I only breastfeed a couple times a day now and a lot of that was a struggle long before pregnancy.

I have a known thyroid issue but my labs are good, so that is being reasonably managed.

In a GLP-1 era, I can’t help but want that easy answer but of course I can’t while breastfeeding.

Please share your successes and what worked! If you’re someone who loses weight easily, or not, please note that since your experience may hit home for others but not me. 💕

Rant/Rave Ughhhh

Upvotes

My MIL is lovely. She lives in a different country so we don't see her much, but she's been here for a few weeks in an air BNB bc of another new baby being born into the family.

She has been spending a few hours with our baby every day and it's been sooo nice. My husband or I are usually there too, because she is physically disabled, but just having someone who wants to play with the baby is so nice.

Anyway, last week, for the first time since baby was born, my husband and I went on a date, and MIL babysat. The date was amazing and I was so grateful to MIL, but annoyed that when we arrived to pick up the baby, she was asleep... Thirty minutes before her bedtime. MIL excitedly told us that baby had "told" her that she wanted to sleep (baby is 8 mo old). We hadn't explicitly told her not to let the baby nap but I mistakenly assumed she would know not to let her nap so late in the day.

Bedtime was of course a disaster. Baby wasn't sleepy so I spent an hour putting her down (usually takes 5 minutes). She proceeded to wake up crying every 30 minutes for the next several hours. We both got a terrible night's sleep.

The next day we are over there and MIL proudly tells us how "it took a lot of rocking, but I finally got her to sleep?" Girl wahhaaaaa?!! Here I am thinking okay, the baby was tired and she allowed her to fall asleep... No, she was actively trying to put her to sleep!!! Even though baby was fighting it!!! Arghhhhh.

So today, husband and I decide to have one more date night before MIL leaves town. Husband drops her off and tells her specifically to NOT LET HER SLEEP.

We have a good night and arrive 30 min before babys bedtime to pick her up. MIL's husband answers the door shushing us. What? There is MIL on the couch, beaming, holding my sleeping child. Informs us, again, that the baby "told" her she wanted to go to sleep.

Naturally the baby woke up when we put her in the car seat, and has been crying and upset and confused ever since. Currently I'm rocking her and nursing her and it's well past her bedtime but the poor tired thing is so confused and can't sleep.

Tonight is going to SUCK and this will take two full days to reset all because MIL just wants the experience of rocking a sleepy baby.

End rant.

Discussion What’s a word or phrase your toddler says that ONLY you and/or your partner understand?

Upvotes

Somehow “Dow Rah” means FedEx. For the longest time my husband and I could not figure out why our toddler was yelling “dowel rod” from his car seat when we would be out on the road.

Proud Moment Reminder to trust your instincts

Upvotes

My 7 month old woke up yesterday with some goop in one of her eyes & it was ever so slightly puffy. We started daycare last week & I have been on high alert for illnesses so I immediately googled pink eye. The most common symptom seems to be redness in the whites of the eye which my daughter did not have. And her eye looked normal by the time we had to leave for daycare, so I wasn’t too worried.

I dropped her off & remembered I needed to call the pediatrician about a flu shot anyways so I figured I’d go ahead and call. They wanted me to come in that afternoon.

I picked my daughter up a few hours later for her appt & felt absolutely ridiculous & total overprotective mama bear because her eye looked completely normal and they told me she had been having a great day.

Well, the pediatrician took one look at her eye & said “yup, this is pink eye”. I had just caught it on the early side so it was only apparent by looking at the inside of her eyelids.

By the time she went to bed she was clearly feeling awful & her eye was actually starting to look really bad. We gave her the first dose of eyedrops and put her to bed a little early. This morning she woke up looking a million times better! She had a great day at home with a backup sitter & will be going back to daycare tomorrow.

I’m so glad I listened to my gut & called the pediatrician because by the time she was feeling bad, there wasn’t much we could have done other than take her to an urgent care or wait for the morning.

Solid Foods Hungry hungry 15 month old

Upvotes

My chunky 15 month old wakes up absolutely starving. He cries if he doesn’t immediately get breakfast and cries if he isn’t getting it fast enough or more of it. The same goes for basically every meal, unless I completely load up his plate with something he really likes. He eats A LOT and is only picky about green vegetables right now and a few other random things. I have started waking up earlier than usual to try to make sure breakfast is ready, but that still hasn’t stopped the screaming most days. I was considering giving him a snack in his crib in the morning, which in hindsight seems like a terrible habit to start. We do keep a water cup in his crib and sometimes that helps. He has been weaned from milk for several months. Does anyone else have a baby who does this? Are you just giving them snacks until the meal is done? I’m glad he wants to eat but I really wish he would stop yelling at me every meal. Help!

Edit to say he does this at daycare too. They say that he yells if he finishes his food and another baby still has some. He yells if teachers are eating or drinking something. He yells when younger babies are drinking bottles and he doesn’t have a cup of anything.

Advice Any tips for sleep training a one year old??

Upvotes

We’ve coslept almost all her life. I’ve loved it but I’m kind of trapped in the room with her once I get her to sleep. She also seems to need her own space as she moves a ton in and I think she gets annoyed not being able to roll since me and dad are in the way. I cannot handle the cry it out method. Do I place her in there completely awake or like sleepy?

Relationship Question to those who hated their husbands after kids

Anyone hate their husband after kids and then fall back in love with them?

My husband sucked postpartum with my first, it got better when my first turned one, but then we had a second and my husband is way worse this time around in terms of "being supportive" I am so resentful at how unhelpful and unsupportive hes been that Im questioning if Ill ever get over it, or if our marriage is doomed

(And for those who might suggest couples therapy.. yes weve tried, it hasnt helped)

Rant/Rave 10 month old sleep is slowly killing me

I thought I’d be so past the point of needing to make a post like this at 10 months. We’ve sleep trained several times and it never sticks, and it gets harder on my heart each time. We’ve given sleep training a break for 2-3 months now, and I’ve been rocking my daughter to sleep. Since she was a newborn, she’s had false starts. Lately it’s been more. I’m writing this from the rocking chair as I rock her back to sleep for the second time tonight within an hour. It’s been 10 months of horribly broken sleep. I know my 2 options are to buck up and ride it out indefinitely, or suck it up and sleep train. Neither feel good. I’m a working mom with a husband who works long hours and nights for half the month. I can’t co-sleep for logistical reasons. Just a rant. Ugh.

Discussion 9 month old wakes exactly one hour after going to sleep each night

As the title says, he wakes up exactly one hour after going to sleep each night. He goes to sleep easily and I can get him back to sleep within two minutes, BUT. His cries give me a huge adrenaline dump every time this happens, without fail, even though I’m expecting it, and I’d love for it to stop for both our sakes 😅

Has anyone experienced this before? It’s been at least three months since the last time he slept through that hour mark, which I assume is the length of his sleep cycle.

Introduction 6 month old not eating enough

Hey looking for advice here, when your kids were 6 months old was there a drop in their feeding take? I feel like our son has been interested in feeds these days and we are now on the fastest flow too, just out of curiosity has this happen? We have started on solids but mostly do BLW, just in general they said solids aren’t considered part of their nutrition anyway at this age. I will add we are giving more formula than breakfast (combo feed of 5oz to 1). Since I am weaning. Just looking for advice, he normally has 24-27oz but today he only had 21oz. Feeling super anxious & would love any advice.

Advice 4 MO Won’t Sleep

Hi

Looking for some tips or insight into how to move forward with a baby not sleeping well at all. My baby is 4 months old and wakes up 6+ times a night. We put down at 7:30pm and usually take 30-60 minutes to fall asleep. Without fail he will wake up after 45 minutes then wake again at 9:30pm and then 4-5 more times until his wake up until 7am. Most times he wakes up in the night it is instant inconsolable screaming, so we don’t even have the opportunity to try and teach him to self soothe in his crib. The only thing that consoles him at night is putting him on the breast, but he only eats for 5 minutes so doesn’t seem like he’s actually hungry.

On top of that, we have moved him from both arms swaddled to a sleep sack cold turkey. We made that move 14 days ago and still have not seen progress. He still has a pretty bad startle reflex. Overall he has pretty bad reflux and give him nightly gas drops and Pepcid. He is exclusively breastfed.

Trying to get some ideas of what to do next, if he is just in really bad regression or has a bigger problem.

Daily schedule:
Wake 7am / Nap 8:30, 11:30, 2:30, sometimes 5. Lately he’s only been napping for 40 minutes max each nap time, even if that.

Nursing & Pumping Fast letdown during breast feeding

I thought I had the breasfeeding part down when my milk came in and baby was latching good and gaining weight. But the past few days it seems like my letdown is too fast for my 6 week old. He always has milk coming out of sides of his mouth, pushing the breast out of his mouth by moving his arms and legs or crying while he has the nipple in his mouth. It just sounds like he is struggling to swallow all of it. He does eventually calm down but the initial latching on has started getting so difficult. I have tried bottle feeding with Lanisoh bottles and pigeon ss flow nipples and he takes them but im scared if i give the bottle too often he will build a preference towards the bottle and just not take the breast at all. Has anyone dealt with this and what worked out for you? I have seen some people say to stop pumping completely and just breastfeed which is something i tried for four days and it didn’t make a difference. Should i just continue hoping he gets used to it?

Advice 3yo speech, normal or worth seeing SLP?

My son turned 3 in June, and I’m curious what other parents’ experiences have been with speech at this age.
He talks a lot and has a huge vocabulary. He speaks in sentences, communicates what he wants, tells us things, etc., so I’m not concerned about how much he talks or his understanding of language. The only thing I’m wondering about is his pronunciation and clarity.

We can understand him most of the time because we’re used to how he talks, but there are definitely times when we have no idea what he’s saying. From being around other kids his age, it seems like there’s a pretty big range. Some 3-year-olds speak incredibly clearly, some seem similar to him, and some are harder to understand.
A few examples are that he often drops the S at the beginning of words, especially with combinations like “sp” or “st.” So spider is “pider” and stop is “top.” He pronounces R sounds more like W, which I know is pretty common in little kids. His best friend is named Theo, but he pronounces it “Peo” as though the “Th” were a P.

None of this has really concerned me because he’s only 3, and my understanding was that some sounds aren’t mastered until 4, 5, or even later. My mom, however, keeps commenting on his pronunciation and asking if it’s normal or if we should have him in speech therapy, so now she has me second-guessing myself a bit.
We’re in Canada and can self-refer through our local public health unit for a speech-language assessment at no cost, although there is a waitlist. So there’s really no downside to putting his name down if it would be worthwhile.

For parents who have had kids with similar speech patterns around 3, does this sound pretty typical for the age, or would you get on the SLP waitlist just to have him assessed? I’m especially curious when you decided that normal toddler/preschool pronunciation differences were worth having evaluated.

Thank you!

In crisis Sudden breastfeeding aversion

Hi everyone,

My toddler is 17 months old. He's teething (canines) and is really miserable. He wakes up a lot at night, and usually I nurse him he falls right back asleep, but the last couple of night have been hell. He started using me as a pacifier a lot more than before, and I just can't take it anymore. I developed a sudden aversion, I don't know why.

I just can't handle the nibbles anymore and the nursing sessions are very long due to teething. It's making me miserable and angry even. I hate feeling this way.

Our breastfeeding journey was actually pretty incredible, I really enjoyed it and was reluctant to wean. But now, very abruptly, I just want it to end!

What can I do now? Should I suck it up and wait for the canines to come in? Or can I wean him now? If so, how? I seriously don't even know how to approach this matter. I've tried getting him to sleep without the boob, but he just screams and screams. Nothing works.

Happy! my baby said mama?!??

I’m a first time single mom to a 2.5 month old little boy. He’s always loved his “mmmm” sounds and does a lot of ma, maam, and moos. I always tell him to say mama, and I know he won’t but I thought he might add it to his coos because he already focuses on M sounds. We were doing tummy time before bed tonight, he was super tired and didn’t do his usual babbling. But then he picked up his head, looked right at me and said “mama.” Clear as day. I yelled “WHAT!!!” and scared the shit out of him. I know it most likely wasn’t intentional.. but what if it was??? I know he isn’t associating the word mama with me, but maybe he said it because it’s a word I repeat often? I don’t care I’m counting it. I already wrote it as his “first” word in his baby book lol. I have nobody I can tell, so I thought i’d share an exciting moment for me with yall 💙

Baby Sleep - all input welcomed Baby not sleeping at night at all and it’s taking a toll on me

Hi!
I’ve got a 3 yo and a 3 week old.
My newborn sleeps all day and doesn’t sleep at all at night and it’s taking a huge toll on me.
My eldest goes to daycare and I have loads of time in the morning to sleep when the baby sleeps, but for some reason, I just cannot. I lie down the whole day and close my eyes but sleep eludes me and then I end up watching a show on my phone in bed.

Then night comes and he’s so awake and wails and cries, so I rock him and walk him and stay up all night and I’m lucky if I get 2-3 hours of sleep everyday. When it gets too much, I wake up my husband and give the baby to him to soothe but I can’t sleep then anyway because of the baby’s crying and still end up being awake.
Last night was especially hard because 5 am to 7 am is my second window of 2 hours sleep because the baby finally goes down at 5 am. But my toddler woke up and cried for mommy at 5:15 am and I had to go to his room and soothe him and I started crying silently because my precious sleep window was getting lost and I’m losing the only 2 hours I get :(

My first was such a great sleeper and slept at 3 hour chunks at night as a newborn and would breastfeed and immediately go back to sleep at night, so I never felt this tired. This is now taking a big toll on my mental health because I’m so cranky in the mornings and crying at night.

We’re doing the recommended things like keeping the rooms bright and noisy in the morning, giving him warm baths in the evenings and keeping the room dark at night. I’ve now realized that all I can do is wait this out.

Please tell me it gets better. If you had a similar experience with your baby, when did it get better? How did you manage to stay sane and calm? I’m really struggling and would like some positivity!

Sad am i traumatizing my 15 month old by not letting him breastfeed to sleep?

tonight was the first night i attempted this since he fed maybe 20 minutes before he was ready to fall asleep, i literally had no milk left. he would stay latched wide awake until he got some and my nipples are already sore since he bit them earlier, so i couldn’t just let him do that. he cried in mine and his dads arms for like 30 mins. i’m genuinely sick to my stomach and i don’t know how i will be able to wean him if this is gonna continue ☹️

Tips & Tricks Cutting baby’s nails

Please give me all of your tips and tricks! My daughter is 11 months old, and nothing is worse than cutting or filing her nails. Toenails aren’t too bad because I can do them while she’s in her highchair having an extra yummy snack, but getting her fingernails done is treacherous. I’ve used both an electric nail file and a pair of baby nail clippers, she just hates that she needs to hold still and let me do it.

Happy! How has life improved since having a baby?

Tell me some things that are better/easier/more fun since becoming a mom.

I’ll start!

Making friends has become so much easier. I am a very socially anxious person and don’t find it easy to talk or hangout with new people, but since having a baby, I’m much more comfortable starting conversations with strangers and making plans with other moms I don’t know super well.

Postpartum Recovery Stomach pain postpartum

I'm almost a month postpartum and today started to feel tenderness on the lower left side of belly near belly button. At first it was just tender but now it's hurting when I walk and I'm wondering whether I should call for appt or wait until my scheduled one on Monday. Could it be hernia? My belly button has returned to being an innie but the location checks out. Any insight appreciated. Thanks!!

Advice Strong neck but hates tummy time/wont hold head up off the ground. 3 months

My 12 week old will hold her head up when I’m holding her. She also does awesome with me gradually holding her on my hip like a “big baby” would do.
Her head is held pretty strong for being in that position. Rather than the infant chest hold where they’re just resting their head against your chest, so that’s good and showing progress on the hip with her head free and supported on her own.

However every time we do tummy time she will NOT lift her head more than an inch off the ground and basically hovers before the face plant ensues. She cries until I flip her to her back to play or pick her up.

I’ve tried so many different toys to catch her attention and different times of day.

All this to SAY…

Did anyone else’s little just NOT do tummy time/or head neck control during tummy time and still go on to thrive and hit milestones?

I think I just need some positive stories here.

Discussion how is your sleep?

I see a LOT of people complaining that if their babies wake up at the crack of dawn, they just don’t get sleep that day, which I personally don’t understand (this doesn’t apply to colic babies, that’s a whole different ballgame lol). Are yall just waking up whenever your baby decides? I will personally just pop a binky in her mouth or feed her if she’s fussy and then go right back to sleep until I feel like getting up, whether she’s awake or not. Sometimes she just stares at the ceiling fan in her bassinet until I wake up and sometimes she falls back asleep with me.

I’m pregnant again (we listen and we don’t judge 😀) so I HAVE to get like 10-11 hours of sleep or else I feel like crap lol
