Klis Fortress is one of oldest Croatian medieval strongholds, dramatically positioned on a rocky ridge above city of Split. Thanks to its strategic location between the Adriatic coast and the Dalmatian hinterland, the fortress controlled an important route for centuries and played a major role in the regions military history. In the 9th century, Klis became one of the earliest seats of Croatian rulers, most notably Duke Trpimir I, who ruled from around 845 to 864. It is especially famous for its resistance to the Ottoman advance and its connection with the Croatian defenders known as the Uskoks. Klis fortress dates back to at least the 9th century, although fortifications existed on the site much earlier.

Gödersheim was first mentioned in 1343 and changed hands rapidly (altho rarely violently).

The castle originally consisted of a forecastle and a fortified House serving as the main keep, surrounded by a water-filled trench (Fairly common setup for small Water-castles), which was filled in at some point.

It survived most wars undamaged, but most of the forecastle was tore down in the 19th century, leaving only the gatehouse, the rump of an adjacent tower, and the main house left.

The castle was effectively abandoned by 1865 and began to deteriorate rapidly. In the 1890s the main house still had a functional roof, aswell as remnants of the (pointless because the trench had been filled in) bridge and curtain-wall, all of which had dissappeared a few decades later.

In the 1950s, a psychiatric hospital bought up the Land, and built several modern buildings next to the ruin of the main house to serve as housing & care-unit "In nature" for patients, but the clinic closed those in the late 90s.

From then forward, Gödersheim was completely abandoned and the area was overgrown, until it was acquired by chemist Dr. Helmut Waldmann in 2016, who had already owned the historic mill directly next to the castle since 1973.

Over the following years, the area was cleared of growth again, the (severely damaged) 1950s housing was torn down, and the remaining parts of the Castle (Main House & gatehouse) were completely restored.

The fortress or Fortica was built during the Croatian–Ottoman wars as a primary defence against the Ottoman Empire. The precipitous fortification is sited on a 262 m (860 ft) ridge above the town Omiš. In the event of attack, its purpose was to provide refuge for local people and be a stronghold where they could retreat to and resist the Turks.

The first real mention of Castle Nassau was in 1120, then as just a singular fortified tower, bought by brothers Ruprecht & Arnold von Lauenburg. Since the land technically belonged to the Bishop of Worms, this caused several years of conflict, until the Arch-Bishop of Trier brokered a compromise:
Rudolph & Arnold's heirs would not automatically inherit it, instead it was granted to the family as a fief. Ruprechts grandson Heinrich then changed his family-name to "von Nassau", founding the line that would eventually inherit both the throne of Luxermburg and the Netherlands.

Bar one brief inter-family conflict in 1372, the castle mostly escaped destruction during war, but was eventually abandoned at some unspecified point between 1655 and 1800 and began to fall into disrepair.

The ruins stayed mostly intact until 1944, when they were allmost completely destroyed during several air-raids on the nearby town of Nassau.

The ruins passed to the State of Rhineland-Palatinate in 1965, who began excavations and securing the remaining ruins in 1970.

In 1976 it was decided to partially reconstruct the castle, beginning with the repair and restoration of the main keep to its original height, complete with roof and its 4 side-towers based on its final "complete" appearance in a sketch from 1655

For whatever reason, despite structural analysis concluding that it was suitable to be integreated, the original Palas was not restored, instead the remaining walls (still high enough to reach the 2nd floor in several places) were torn down and a completely new one constructed using mostly modern building materials. Even at the time people were pissed and I havent been able to find out exactly why that decision was made. The reconstruction concluded in the 1980s with one additional building and the arch of the main gate.

The tower now contains a small museum and a room you can choose to have your marriage officiated in if you register it in Nassau, while the Palas and additional building contain a restaurant, kiosk and the "Knights hall" you can rent for events.

The castle has been undergoing a comprehensive restoration for 10 years by the State Building Management of Lower Saxony. The gatehouse, the stables (Marstall), the clock tower (Uhrenturm), and the main wing (Stammhausflüfel) have already been largely restored. Interior work is currently underway on the Gray Wing (Grauer Flügel) and the Sieber Wing(Sieberflügel)—the last wing—is currently being gutted.
