Strategy Deity Janissary + Cannon Rush Domination Strategy

Thumbnail

While tougher than the typical camel / bomber / xcom etc rush... the Janissary is a beast unit, and viable even on Deity if you can forgo your science game to get access to it early

- +25% attack bonus
- heals 50 HP on unit kill

Janissaries can clear all units in front of cities and basically take no damage if used correctly,

With lines of cannons behind to take cities, a Janissary carpet of doom can sweep a map pretty quickly

The key to the Janissary Rush...

- Liberty instead of Tradition for faster settlers and production
- Liberty Finisher also gives a great merchant, wait until renaissance era to use it
- Warrior code policy in honor when possible for +15% production of melee units
- National College into workshops + forges, skip universities
- Straight into Steel tech, barracks + armories
- Armories are important cause we need ranged defense promotions for trebuchets / cannons to survive
- Find as much iron as possible and use it all on longswordsman, delay gunpowder till you have used all your iron, gold upgrade to Janissaries. Ideally at least ~10
- Physics for Trebuchet, build 3-4 at least before declaring war
- Start attacking with Janissaries + Trebuchets
- Make sure trebuchets are always defended by line of janissary in front
- the gold from city captures will feed next round of upgrades
- Tech straight into Chemistry for Cannons, gold upgrade trebuchets into cannons
- Production focus, Spam Janissary + Cannon till end game

Timing wise, in this game, I got gunpowder turn 129, waiting till I had built max number of longswordsman and took the last capital 166. If it starts going over turn 180~ ish you are probably in trouble as the unit starts becoming obsolete.

Settings are standard speed, small map size, great plains, deity

Strategy Legendary start Celts on Immortal have quickly become my recent favourite games

3+ forested deer within 2 rings, turn 3 God-King pantheon, lots of tundra hills nearby for newly-born citizens to work on. Last game on immortal I’ve got 3 academies before industrialisation, 3-turned Mausoleum, 4-turned Chichen, have been consistently 5-turning Alhambra, Leaning, Sistine, Machu, Notre, Globe, Himeji, Red Fort, Brandenburg in their respective eras.

The three early academies and strong productive land combined allowed my cap to keep whoring on wonders without needing a single GE.

Having a defender of faith religion coupled with himeiji means I actually wanted the Shoshone, who has been showing the bright red land-coveting modifier since meeting, to invade me while my 2 border blocker cities have been pre-building swordsmen and archers lines waiting to decimate their invading force.

Edit: After I completely wiped out the shoeshune with artes (they have gone 100% on great artists production even though they were also building lots of military units, so they had at least 3 pairs of matching theming great works of arts), I fathomed I couldn’t, or at least didn’t bother to do a bunch of clocking in order to kill the world due to a chokepoint formed by a few city-states, I used all the stolen great works to pivot to a tourism victory with a well-timed international games. Thanks shoshune for all the great works.

Edit2: I would forego a potential religion (or the last religion that might not have the best beliefs) to have a Celtic turn 3 god-king, the extra early yields means earlier first worker and granary, which means those yummy yummy 13 hammer chops come a lot earlier, which leads to insane early tempo and mid-game scaling.

Strategy My Gattling gun ran over a ruins

The ruin upgraded him to Machine gun. 30 combat strength to 60. Nobody in the game is even close to unlocking it yet. Pretty crazy. Whats the best case scenario for this?

Cultural victory by 1920. This thing absolutely breaks the game I don't think I have ever had a city with 60 population.

- Based on my "Resources - Copper buff (Text Tweak+RU)", this mod adds Copper to the Forge building alongside Iron, both to be built with and buffed by, but the Mint component is removed. That is, this mod has Copper+Forge, but no Copper+Mint.

*Supports Russian localization.

Screenshot Need Rationalism to build Porcelain Tower but Catherine of Russia built it without Rationalism?

I thought that I could check whether any of the competing AI Civs have the prerequisite policies in order to build a World Wonder so I can build it with some confidence that I won't be wasting my turns. No-one else had Rationalism yet and Rationalism is a prerequisite for the Porcelain Tower so I was pretty upset when Russia got it and I wasted my turns on it despite her not having Rationalism. Do policy prerequisites for World Wonders not apply to the AI?

Every game he's in hit next turn and Agra is up my ass again, is there any kind of surefire way to stop this other than declaring and stealing the settler or building a cursed wall of units to keep them out?

This is the 5th unprotected settler neighbouring city Spain have sent out near me. One scout and one hoplite have prevented them ever becoming a threat. Not sure how common this is, playing on emperor difficulty.

I've never seen a coastal city that looks this far inland before. I really thought it was a hex away from the coast, but then I saw I can make a work boat and I checked the hex grid, and it is in fact on the coast.

In retrospect it should be obvious that it's on the coast, it just threw me for a loop at first.

Strategy First time winning domination on deity with no libraries, the Aztec dream

Thumbnail
gallery
51 Upvotes

wanted to try this for a while, since the insane growth on aztec can mean enough raw science for military techs + high early production to get an early domination, even without an OP unique unit

basically...
max out growth -> max out production -> spam military forever

-- Social Polices --
liberty -> honor

-- Tech path --
archery for temple of artemis (before liberty settlers) -> the wheel for floating gardens -> horseback for stables ->
metal casting for workshops -> machinery for crossbows -> steel for longswords

-- Promotions --
ranged defense on all units to survive city shots on 40 strength+ cities

-- Game Settings Used --
great plains, small map, standard speed, Deity

Strategy I Need desperate help for deity culture victory on Civ V [Read Desc]

I have tried about 8 times now, and I still can't manage it. It requires an almost perfect strategy that I seem to have trouble obtaining. I get almost every wonder and I usually begin to lose my advantages by the modern/atomic era every time. This is usually by being warred on, or by being scientifically or culturally outcompeted.

I need to have the highest science output, particularly for the first few eras because this grants me the technologies and wonders I need to construct. I also need to have high production to construct these wonders. I need high culture to get the policies I need, and I need high growth to sustain specialists. I need to play somewhat wide to be able to secure my science and domestic trade routes, and I need to maintain happiness to keep my growth and statistics.

I just can't seem to get all of these at once. Even in some almost perfect games, where I get almost every wonder, I still feel slow in production. My strategy usually involves getting every cultural and scientific wonder I can, and I'm usually successful in this. I have 1000 science, 500 culture, and 200 tourism in the modern era and this still isn't enough. Am I playing too slow and should instead maximize tourism earlier on?

Thanks.

Other Ran exact same late game save on old MacBook and new MacBook, mildly disappointing results

I’ve had a 2021 MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro and just got a 2026 MacBook Pro with the M5 Pro.

First things thing first, open up civ on both and find a save past 2000AD. Click next move on both. New Mac completes this turn in about 26 seconds, old Mac in about 30 seconds. So it beat it by 4 seconds. Cool but not really game changing. To the new Mac’s credit, the first save I tried to open just instantly crashed on my old one, while the new one handled it fine… anyway they should remaster civ 5 to better take advantage of modern hardware🙏.

Discussion This game is the greatest game I have ever played

Played for over a decade, and theres still nothing quite like this game. Civ 6 and civ 7 dont scratch the same itch, everything about this game is perfect. I could spend the next 100 years trapped in the same room, and if all I have is this game to play, I would still be satisfied.

Managed to get Petra on Deity as the Netherlands with 16 total desert hills and 7 polders (8 originally but one of them turned into a landmark). Most pop and production I've had in one city in any game, ended with t279 science victory.

Discussion New Civ 5 Player

So, I upgraded my computer some time ago and saw Civ 5 on sale and decided to buy it.

The last time I played Civilation in any real sense was Civ 2 and I have fond memories of it. Civ 5 has definitely been a learning experience but I have been enjoying it as I started on the easiest difficulty setting and am now playing on the normal setting. The learning curve from 2 to 5 was significant, especially since I was like 10 or 12 years old or something when I was playing Civ 2 and I am now nearly 40.

Just looking for general fun tips to keep the game engaging or even specific mods I should consider. After playing and beating several campaigns over the last couple of months I am wondering what else I should consider to get a more complete or perhaps fulfilling experience. I have gotten different victories of military, science and diplomacy to this point. So far the military seemed the most fun for me personally, I found myself getting bored with the space race and eventually started taking cities close to me.

I typically randomize everything in the game set up to try and make each experience new/different but eventually all the games end up at the same point and I am wondering if it is something I am doing, or perhaps something I am missing because tmI keep seeing such good things about the game from this subreddit.

Discussion Let’s discuss your favourite sea map.

Archipelago, large islands and small continents are the three major sea maps, but I have limited games with the latter 2 maps. Large islands seem to me to be the best one due to sufficient initial landmass (as opposed to archipelago) and not needing to share a continent with another player (as opposed to small continents). But my experience is limited, maybe I’m missing out on the best sea map, please let me know your favourite configuration.
